our mike nicco there's drizzle while you drive to work. because he's at our parent company at abc 7. >> that makes me chuckle. bridge. expected to be a somewhat soggy commute for most of us. good morning. it is tuesday, august 28th. thanks for joining us. >> as long as you're entertained, jessica, i'm entertained. i'm glad you're enjoying it. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. here's mike nicco. >> what's going on? yes, let's talk about some of that drizzle because it is more widespread. especially along the coast. it's been measurable in point reyes, half moon bay, close to measurable in san francisco and up around the caldecott tunnel. that gives you an idea where you might find slick spots. let's talk about what's going to happen weather wise. mid to upper 50s. no difference there. slower sunshine means most of us in the 60s away from the coast at noon. into the 70s by 4:00, then 50s and 60s and a very comfortable evening on the way. how about the commute? >> yeah, still pretty

comfortable there, too. we haven't had any major issues and we're looking at decent volumes. here's richmond, the richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge. westbound 580, a little belay if you're not using the carpool lanes just before the toll plaza, but no major issues. we had very few incidents. mass transit looking good, too. 49 b.a.r.t. trains in service with no delays. ace 1 and 3 out on time. ace 3 is having some gps tracking issues so if you look on their website, it looks like it's gnaw running but it's out on time. and capital corridor, normal service and no delays. >> speaking of transportation, b.a.r.t. is getting almost $7 million from washington to try to make our ride safer. >> it comes amid major safety crimes on b.a.r.t. trains and stations. amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with details on where this money is going to go. amy. >> hi, jessica. we have been talking to b.a.r.t. riders this morning who tell us they do feel nervous on b.a.r.t.

they would like to see more done to keep them safe. b.a.r.t. officials say help is on the way. that fema is going to be giving b.a.r.t. a $6.8 million grant. and they will use it to pay for more officers to patrol the trains. they will also update some of their cameras and radio systems. commuters we spoke with this morning say they think b.a.r.t. does need more police officers on the trains. >> i actually think we do. you know, because it's been a lot of tragedy on the b.a.r.t. and i think that would help out a lot. i really do. i think it would help out a lot. >> safety has become a top concern for b.a.r.t. after a string of stabbings on the trains and in the stations. the most recent one happened on saturday. b.a.r.t.'s general manager says this money is much needed and will be a boost to their safety plan. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you.

san jose police are working to track down the person who shot a 15-year-old boy. >> this happened near lucretia avenue and walnut woods drive after 4:00 yesterday. and that is only two blocks from john f. kennedy elementary school. it's not clear what led up to the shooting. and we're told the boy is expected to recover. a sobering experience for out of state tourists in healdsburg after their tour bus driver was arrested for dui. the chp says eight tourists from minnesota and ohio found their driver passed out behind the wheel friday night. still, the driver tried to take them southbound on 101. the tourists eventually forced him off the freeway at old red highway and called rideshares to pick them up. >> he was having trouble maintaining his vehicle within the lane, and at one point, he almost hit a big rig. >> chp has identified the driver as 60-year-old eugene kremin, working for napa valley wine country tours. investigators are looking into his role in the company, and chp

says he has a prior dui conviction. abc 7 news reached out to his employer for comment but we have not heard back. >> we have new defails on a crash involving a chp motorcycle officer in el cerrito. sky 7 will show you the scene. this was breaking in the abc 7 news at 6:00 yesterday. now we know the officer along with another driver involved in that crash were not hurt. this happened during a pursuit on i-80. the chp says the officer was chasing a hyundai sonata when it cut off a jeep. that driver lost control and crashed right in front of the motorcycle officer. the sonata got away. >> in the north bay, a fire destroyed a townhouse and threatened to spread into a wooded hillside. according to the marin ij, it broke out around 6:00 last night on east court. crews rushed to contain the fire before it spread, but it did damage two other homes. a preliminary report says the fire started in a kitchen. undeinvestigation. police and fire crews in

napa responded to reports of a possible crash landing of a helicopter. it turned out to be a gyrocopter, or experimental helicopter that had to make an emergency landing yesterday afternoon. the chp shared this video of the incident. they report the pilot was trying to take off from the field near the meadows of napa valley. the pilot wasn't hurt and it's unclear what caused the emergency landing. >> in the east bay, girls are getting back in the game. oakland unified has reinstated three sports programs. golf, lacrosse, and tennis. the decision comes days after the district said it would cut a totalf of ten high school sports. oakland unified faced criticism for potentially violating title ix, a federal law that includes requiring girls having equal access to sports in public schools. female student athletes applaud te reversal. >> you can meet a lot of new people, build a lot of different skills throughout these sports so i think it's important theye ngt io saved the

it. the pineapples ended up at a fruit and vegetable market before the drugs were discovered. investigators track down and arrested three people in madrid and four people in barcelona. >> new this morning, the bay area to the rescue in hawaii. a search and rescue task force from menlo park released these photos of the group hard at work in hilo. they're on the lookout for people stuck in remote areas. members have covered more than 50 square miles in the past two days. hawaii has been dealing with record rainfall and because of all the rain from the hurricane, now the tropic kical storm lane. >> sfo officials are adding security patrols to its taxi parking lots. >> no nice way to put this. these drivers are using the bathroom but not at the bathroom. so according to the examiner, the airport sent an e-mail on friday to cabbies calling the unsanitary condition a health hazard. drivers are reminded the the

restrooms are open 24/7 and they can leave their car in the parking lot when they theed to. violators can be suspended, fined, or arrested. okay, check your medicine cabinet. pfizer is recalling this children's advil in the bubble gum flavor. the company says the instructions are marked in milliliters but the dosage cup is marked in teaspoons. the recall impacts bottles with a november 20th, 2020 expiration date. you can return it for a refund, and we have much more information about the recall on our website, abc7news.com. >> berkeley wants property owners to become urban farmers. new zoning and rule changes that encourage the initiative throughout the city are now in effect. that means owners of smaller properties who want to grow fruits and vegetables or teach their skills can now do that and not have a permit. reducing berkeley's carbon footprint was a big reason for this proposal. the new rules do not cover cannabis cultivation. that is regulated by the state. >> new this morning, air pollution doesn't just hurt your lungs. also impacts your brain.

morning. westbound 84 before little valley road, a multicar crash is do not take 84. crawling at about 4 miles per hour. major delays there. just continue on and take 680 in the southbound direction. and a sixth car crash before auto mall park way blocking the far right lane. next traffic update coming up at 6:40. >> thanks. in the south bay, a dishonor for our heroes. >> someone defaced a memorial dedicated to those who were killed while serving our country. matt keller is live in san jose. matt. >> good morning. a lot of people are upset about this. this memorial was unveiled about five years ago honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. check out what was done. this is sin the park next to the s.a.p. center in downtown san jose. san jose vietnam memorial foundation erected this memorial in remembrance of the 142 sons of san jose who lost their lives

during the vietnam war. group said it wanted to give the city and its residents a quiet place to remember and reflect on the memories of their lived ones and give people a place to pay their respects and gratitude. some time on saturday, somebody vandalized the memorial. the vietnam memorial foundation posted on their facebook page, thank you to all who commented on the recent vandalism that occurred this past saturday. we're in the process of trying to repair the memorial. thank you again for your support. the organization holds a remembrance ceremony at the memorial every year on march 30th. reporting live in san jose, matt kell keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. >> now to the latest on the mass shooting in jacksonville. abc news has learned the shooting suspect was hospitalized twice for mental illness. divorce filings from the parents of 24-year-old david katz say that he was on antipsychotics and antidepression medication at a younger age. and the filings also say he played video games obsessively as a young boy, refusing to go

to school or even bathe. police say sunday's shooting left two people dead and 12 with bullet wounds. the family of 22-year-old elijah clayton is now remembering the former high school football player. >> family has been forever changed. nothing will replace the love that we have for elijah. there is a hole that will never be filled. >> meanwhile, ea sports has canceled the next flea qualifying tournaments to review safety protocols. those were set for santa ana in southern california, dulles, virginia, and carrollton, texas. other gaming conventions are also taking a look at security. in a statement to the gaming website, polygon, they said, quote, we will be reviewing our policy plans and updating them accordingly. twitchcon is set to take place in october in san jose. and police have not yet given a motive, so we don't know exactly why david katz shot fellow

gamers before killing himself. one witness said that katz lost a game the day before the shooting and refused to shake hands afterward with his competitor. a psychiatrist and founder of the center of internet technology and addiction says for gamers playing at a very high level, it's easy to get lost in cyberspace. >> we are terrible at predicting violence. but you can't really predict who's going to become violent or not, even if they have a mental health issue. the truth is lots of people have mental health issues and they never commit violence. >> and we have much more information on our website, abc7news.com with links to resources about technology addiction and a video addiction screening test. >> counselors will be at serr ahigh school to help students grieve for a student killed in a car crash. blake was headed to school early yesterday afternoon when his car went off skyline boulevard in redwood city. first responders found him dead inside the vehicle 45 feet down

a cliffside. investigators are still trying to determine what happened there. serra high school will have counselors and staff available on campus for anyone who needs support. he's survived by his parents and twin brother. >> happening today, a critical deadline in sacramento that could end with pg&e customers paying more on their monthly bills. sacramento lawmakers are debating whether to allow utilities to pass along some wildfire costs customers. pg&e expects to pay billions of dollars related to lawsuits due to the north bay wildfires last year. current california law says utilities are responsible for damage from fires ignited by their equipment. >> ten months after the north bay wildfires, rebuilding in santa rosa is far from over. 2700 homes were destroyed in the fires last year. as of last week, only nine homes have been rebuilt. another 520 are under construction. city officials say many homeowners dicovered their insurance policies did not cover

the cost to rebuild, leading to delays in claim settlements and construction. a bay area catholic leader will speak at senator john mccain's memorial service thursday in phoenix. . >> father edward a. reese will take part in the wreath laying and address those in attendance. father reese knew mccain when he worked in phoenix and was the head of the high school where mccain's two sons attended. he spoke to abc 7 news about a side of mccain rarely seen, his love for nature. years ago when a flash flood hit near his sedona ranch, mccain was concerned about the displacement of the animals, in particular, his favorite hawk. >> i was there when this bird came back. there was a grin on his face from ear to ear, just his hawk had come back. and that's the kind of man he was. >> president trump is finally speaking about senator mccain's passing, after initially only sending out a short tweet over the weekend. so here's what he said last

drizzle. ferry ride, a little damp this morning. quiet this afternoon. and mass transit, we have cleaner air and air that's going to be on the cool side of average. look at the south bay. we should be in the low 80s. we're starting at 62 with cloudy conditions at 8:00. 69 at noon, and then some mid 70s during the afternoon hours but light jacket weather by evening. 8:00, 66 and stars. how about the peninsula? start out 62 at 8:00, and then we jump up to 67 with more sunshine at noon. most of our sunshine is during the afternoon hours. that's why we're in the low 70s, and also back into the mid 60s under stars by 8:00. the clock is ticking on when we're going to get the summer heat. it's coming. and i'll show it to you coming up. first y want to get alexis in here. we had drizzle but you haven't seen an effect on the roads? >> not really. only had a couple incidents. overall, it has been very quiet. we're looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza where things are stacked up. we had metering lights on since 5:27 this morning.

so a little over an hour, unless you're using the carpool lanes, you'll have a wait. not terrible, just the typical backups into the maze. i have been watching a lot of our traffic cameras closely, just seeing the mist and drizzle, seeing if it is having an impact. it's really settling in at golden gate bridge and i have seen a lot of vehicles here with their wipers on. just be aware. it could be part of your commute this morning. and it's been a while since we have had any measurable precipitation, so when that happens, the oils really rise to the surface and we could have some slick roadways out there today. heads-up for this weekend. nothing going on right now with b.a.r.t., but major track repairs once again between 19th street and west oakland stations so that means that free bus bridge and likely long delays. that's all day this saturday, sunday, and monday. jessica. >> alexis, thank you. a new report des a the home of a missing man in san francisco. >> according to the chronicle, a headless corpse was found in a fix tank at the home on clara street near fifth in the soma neighborhood. now investigators are trying to

determine if the remains belong to brian aig. the 65-year-old was reported missing by a neighbor earlier this month. that neighbor says he grew suspicious when two strangers started answering his door, saying the homeowner was on vacation. this morning, egg remains missing and police are trying to determine if the body is his. >> safety remains a major concern in football, especially at the youth level. how a program in the south bay is working on new injury prevention techniques. >> a live look at the big board at the new york stock exchange. another update coming up. >> imagine using your phone on a plane in airplane mode and you get a $13,000 bill.

>> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with how b.a.r.t. plans to use this money. amy. >> hi, jessica. well, the b.a.r.t. general manager says this money is much needed and will give a boost to their safety plan. maybe you have noticed more police officers patrolling b.a.r.t. trains recently. well, this grant money will pay to keep them on the trains. this team is made up of seven officers and one sergeant. they will also use the money to update some of their cameras and improve their radio systems. b.a.r.t. passengers we talked to this morning say they would like to see more done to keep them safe. >> i have been riding b.a.r.t. since 2003. and in the last couple years, it's gotten really bad. i see a little bit more police presence, which i'm very happy about. but again, it's not enough. we just had a stabbing the other day. i just heard. and i'm nervous.

>> safety on b.a.r.t. has been a key issue for officials to address after several stabbings on the trains and in the stations. the most recent one on saturday. the board is considering a proposed safety plan that includes controversial ideas like banning panhandling. the board will listen to the public's comments about the plan next month. this $6.8 million grant is coming from fema, and b.a.r.t. says representative eric swalwell helped secure the money out of washington. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening now, people are lining up to pay their final respects to aretha franklin. the queen of soul died on august 16th of pancreatic cancer. i want to show you a live look outside the charles h. wright museum of african-american history in detroit. you see a public viewing is being held today and tomorrow, and a lot of people are already lining up to pay their respects. franklin's funeral, meanwhile, is set for friday.

featured speakers include stevie wonder, smokey robinson, jennifer hudson, and former president bill clinton. new details this morning about a ground beef recall, they say the meat in question was sold at safeway, albertson's, pack and safe, and von's stores in california. >> we told you about this yesterday during the morning show. 12 tons of ground beef may be contaminated with e. coli. the recalled meat was packed on august 16th and has a use or freeze by date of september 5th. shoppers can return it for a full refund. if you want to check out the link to the full list of recalled products, it's on our website, abc7news.com. and the app. >> the attorney for one of the ghostship fire suspects accuses the judge who reflected a plea deal of a conflict of interest. derrick almena and max harris agreed to plead no contest to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. that's in exchange for prison sentences that many victims' families said were too lenient.

the judge rejected the deal saying almena showed no remorse. almena's attorney now wants the agreement restored because the judge failed to disclose he had lost a child. the attorney says that made him biased in favor of the families. a south bay football program has adopted a unique injury prevention technique aimed at c proper way to play the game. they're working with shadow man sports. it incorporates the first movable and detachable tackling systems to promote the correct approach. the company believes eliminating player on player contact during practice reduces the risk of injury. >> between football and rugby, we don't care pads and helmets, so there's more of an emphasis, i feel anyway growing up playing rugby, on technique. what we're doing with the equipment and education is putting an emphasis back into tackling. >> usa football, football canada, and texas youth football association have all adopted this system.
