has done for our country. >> reporter: for the president it was a rare reversal. he avoided any comment on mccain's legacy. but he finally bowed to public pressure and issued a statement. despite our differences on policy and politics, i respect senator john mccain's service to our country. earlier on monday i tried to get the president to say something, anything, about mccain and his legacy. >> mr. president, do you have any thoughts on john mccain? do you have any thoughts at all about john mccain? do you believe john mccain was a hero, sir? >> thank you. nothing at all about john mccain? >> reporter: after mccain died the president nixed the idea of putting out a statement honoring his legacy. the white house flag was lowered to half-staff saturday, but raised again 24 hours later. >> it is such pettiness, such pettiness in reaction to a real american hero. >> reporter: the american legion

and vfw both representing millions of american veterans appealed directly to the president to once again lower the flags to half-staff and amid building pressure late monday, he did just that. a mccain family spokesman said mccain would have wanted to focus on his final message to the country, a farewell letter written by the senator and read aloud by his friend and former campaign manager rick davis. >> we weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries. we weaken it when we hide behind walls rather than tear them down. do not despair of our present difficulties. we believe always in the promise and greatness of america. because nothing is inevitable here. >> reporter: mccain's office released a list of 15 pallbearers for his service saturday at national cathedral. it is a who's who of mccain's friends and allies across the political spectrum including vice president joe

biden, former new york city mayor michael bloomberg and even warren beatty. the president will not attend the services. he was not invited by the mccain family but the white house will be represented by chief of staff john kelly, defense secretary jim mattis and by security adviser john bolton. he will lie in state at the capitol. the president made news on trade, announcing a new trade deal. canada wasn't part of it and it's not clear you can have a nafta deal without canada. >> you can't necessarily have one without canada or without congressional approval, george. whatever is ultimately done will likely have to be approved by congress. the canadian foreign minister is coming to washington to meet with members of the administration. they are going to try to get canada involved in this, part of this, by the end of the week. >> the president said many times mexico was going to pay for the border wall as part of this revised trade deal. no mention of that. >> absolutely no mention of that

whatsoever, george. >> jon karl, thanks very much. cecelia. >> george, thank you. we want to turn to the new crisis of faith inside the catholic church. this morning pope francis is facing explosive allegations, a former vatican official is accusing him of ignoring allegations of sex abuse by a cardinal. david, some say this has the potential to sink this papacy. >> that's right, cecelia. several top u.s. church officials are calling for some sort of investigation. the catholic church now finds itself in the position of so many institutions in the me too era. its top official accused of criminal misconduct. the accuser is this man, archbishop carlo vigano, the former papal nuncio, ambassador appointed by pope benedict, removed by pope francis. he may have an ax to grind but he claims that pope francis has known for five years that former washington, d.c. cardinal

theodore mccarrick was a serial predator, a known abuser of priests and seminarians but claims francis turned a blind eye on this until this summer. what's not clear is this credible or is it an attempt by a hostile faction within the church to weaponize the larger scandal and bring down the pope? >> yeah, david, the timing is remarkable. it came while the pope was in the middle of that heart-wrenching trip to ireland but so far pope francis is refusing to address these allegations. >> that's right, the pope was asked about this on the flight home from ireland. he refused to say a single word about it and said basically read it for yourselves and judge for yourselves. the arch diocese of washington d.c. has issued a statement saying those allegations are categorically untrue. a lot of people here and around the world need some clarity on this. at this very moment it undermines his moral authority

and does pose a threat to his papacy. >> certainly rocking the faithful. david wright at the vatican, thank you. michael. now to new details on that deadly shooting at a video game competition. this morning we're learning more about the two victims who lost their lives and the suspect's troubled past. victor oquendo is in jacksonville, florida with more. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the sheriff's office now says they've reviewed surveillance video from inside the pizza restaurant at the jacksonville landing which is where the shooting took place that they say shows the suspect specifically targeting other gamers, but still no word on a motive. >> reporter: this morning we're learning more about the suspected shooter who killed two people during a video game competition in jacksonville. streaming live for the world to see and hear. >> oh, [ bleep ]. what'd he shoot me with? >> reporter: the sheriff's office saying 24-year-old david katz walked right past bystanders specifically targeting other gamers in his

rampage, armed with two handguns legally purchased in maryland and plenty of ammunition. one of the guns equipped with a laser sight. in this image a red dot can be seen on 22-year-old elijah clayton's chest. >> he was a good man. he did not believe in violence. he never even had a fistfight. my cousin has to bury her first born. it is just as terrible as that sounds. >> reporter: both clayton, who decided to attend the competition at the last minute, and fellow gamer taylor robertson, a father of a young son, were killed. this as we're learning new details about the shooter's past. court records obtained by abc news show katz was treated for psychiatric issues at least twice in the past. >> man, david katz keeps to himself. he's not here to make friends. >> reporter: the suspect who went by the nickname bread was a well-known madden gamer regularly competing in big money tournaments like this one last year. >> i don't think of myself as a seven seed. i think personally i'm one of the better players. >> reporter: he shot ten others before taking his own life at

>> 5 to 12 inches of rain and now those training thunderstorms from milwaukee to kalamazoo, the pictures coming from wisconsin, stunning, the water rescues and evacuation in coon valley, wisconsin overnight as all of that rain fell very quickly. now you have to watch it drain. it also came along with damaging winds in parts of minnesota. goodhue county, 82-mile-per-hour winds and could do it again today. the damaging wind threat is number one. you could see an isolated tornado but in flint, michigan, or saginaw back through rockford, cedar rapids all in the damaging wind threat this afternoon and this evening. >> could be a rough day in the middle of the country, ginger. thanks very much. cecelia. there is a growing mystery outside houston. a woman seen on surveillance camera ringing a doorbell in the middle of the night. she is barefoot, apparently in distress, and then she just disappears. gio benitez has more and, gio, this is just the latest troubling incident caught on a doorbell camera. >> it is, cecelia. good morning. the mysterious video is just seven seconds long. police don't know who the woman

is. she appears to be wearing restraints and now this morning they're desperately trying to figure out who she is and if she's in trouble. >> reporter: this morning what police are calling a mystery caught on a doorbell cam. police are concerned after seeing this woman appear on video and then seemingly disappear. they say they believe she looks in distress, without shoes and with what they think may have been restraints around her wrists. >> we still don't know who the girl is. if she's local or from somewhere else. does she come from within the neighborhood? >> just the look on her face but she was being very, very quiet when you see the video, she was being very quiet and looked just distressed. >> reporter: it was just past 3:30 a.m. friday when the homeowner says he was awoken by the doorbell ringing contacting police after viewing that video. police say they have no idea who she is. the incident eerily similar to this one in toronto early thursday morning.

a 28-year-old woman captured ringing a doorbell and activating that doorbell cam. nobody home but, watch, a man grabs her by the hair. >> get in the [ bleep ] car. >> i think i'm gonna die. >> good. [ bleep ] >> reporter: the homeowner said he was shocked when he finally saw it. >> i kept playing it over and over again because i couldn't believe my eyes. >> reporter: police say the woman said to have been abducted has now been found safe but the alleged abductor is still on the run. as for that mystery in texas, police say they're reviewing other surveillance videos from the area. they've been looking at reports also of missing people. so far no match. they're hoping someone watching this on tv can help identify her right now. >> so strange. >> yeah. >> thanks, gio. we move to that great news about sofia. she is the 11-year-old girl who had two wishes. she wanted to meet drake. she did that. she also wanted a new heart and yesterday that happened as well. i want to bring in t.j. holmes for an update. all did go well? >> it did. i want everybody to give me the next 90 seconds of your time.

your day is going to be brighter for hearing this story. a little girl with an often fatal heart condition gets the attention of one of the biggest stars in music. even he can't give her what she so desperately needs, a new heart. this morning, she got it. >> reporter: no one wants to spend their birthday in the hospital, but 11-year-old sofia sanchez made the most of it making two birthday wishes. first, a visit from drake. after she posted this video of herself doing, what else, the kiki challenge. ♪ 'cause i want you and i need you ♪ >> oh, my god. >> you asked me to come. i'm here. >> i didn't talk for a minute. i was like, is this -- is this real or fake? he's like, it's me, drake. >> reporter: then she wished for the thing that would save her life. >> my other wish is to get a heart. >> yeah? >> which is going to happen soon. >> well, guess what? >> what? >> it happened today. you're getting a heart. congratulations. >> i'm getting a heart, mom.

>> yes. >> reporter: this morning, both her birthday wishes have come true. the heart arrived at the lurie children's hospital yesterday around noon. six hours later the heart transplant was complete. doctors say the next 24 to 48 hours are critical but the surgery was successful. the heart seems happy it's in a new home. so, great ending to this story. she does have a couple of months, as you were just saying, of recovery and doctors will monitor her closely. important to keep in mind, i've dealt with other families on the other side. when someone has their wish, their dream come true like this another family had to go through heartache and this is why donors and the importance of donors is something to keep in mind, another family had to go through heartache for her to have this happy ending. >> that's true. >> a blessing for her. >> yes. >> thinking of that family as well. >> great story. now we go to the u.s. open, serena williams getting a big win here in new york last night as the new mom tries to take

allegedly informed rain dove she had been receiving unsolicited nude photos of bennett since he was 12 but had not informed the authorities or told him to stop sending the photos. in a statement acknowledging the new information she writes, it's sad to lose a friend connection but what's even more sad is what happened to jimmy bennett. many people believe that because we have been close in each other's lives over the year that perhaps i am affiliated with this incident or being complicit. i am not. mcgowan said she was the one who urged argento to turn over texts to the police. mcgowan goes on to say i've been humbled by this. there absolutely should be no leeway or tolerance for sexual assault. hard stop, none. however, as allies to the victim and voyeurs of an event we should find a better way to balance support of the victim with due process of the accused. this is a sharp turn for mcgowan who has often publicly advocated a swift and harsh penalty for anyone accused of that. in the fall of 2017, argento was one of the first women to publicly accuse harvey weinstein of sexual assault. mcgowan also became one of

landing. there is still no word on mo e eriff's office saying 24-year-old david katz walked right past bystanders, specifically targeting other gamers in his rampage. he was armed with two handguns legally purchased in maryland along with plenty of ammunition. one of those guns was equipped with a laser sight. police say he killed two gamers, 28-year-old taylor robertson and 22-year-old elijah clayton, before turning the gun on hims ten others were also shot. the suspect was a well-known madden gamer regularly competing in big money tournaments and authorities gathering evidence at his baltimore home. his parents are cooperating with police. court records obtained by abc news show he was treated for psychiatric issues at least twice in the past and now this community trying to get back to normal. later the jacksonville landing will re-open to the public. cecilia. >> thank you, victor. michael. >> thank you, cecilia. we have so many great stories about kids this morning so how about one more, you guys.

as your kids head back to school we have ways to help them stay stress-free. i had a chance to sit down with author mallika chopra to talk about her new book called "just breathe: meditation, mindfulness, movement and more." we tried out some of her strategies with a group of children. take a look. >> reporter: for some kids there's nothing worse than saying good-bye to summer and hello to a new school year. >> who knows what it feels like to be stressed out? >> reporter: helping them beat back to school stress may be easier than you think. in her new book "just breathe: meditation, mindfulness, movement and more", mallika chopra, the daughter of legendary meditation guru deepak chopra, says kids can calm their anxiety by tap nothing their there with you so you can slow down and find your breath. >> reporter: as mindfulness makes its way into more and more classrooms across the country,

nutrition in cow milk. that's like protein, calcium and vitamin d, potassium, b12. so that's what you'll get in that and there's natural sugar in milk but there is no added sugar in milk. >> oh. >> that's right. >> isn't that interesting to know? >> what about looking at three here? one's whole milk, one's 2% and one's got no fat. >> i love the 2%. like a nice compromise. a little bit of fat is good. in terms of cons, this is a top eight allergen and for some it's hard to digest. it might be more expensive. a lot of pros, ltle t of cons and great for a family like yours. >> again, if you're going to grab one of the cow milks you say 2%. >> i like 2. it's a nice compromise. >> we'll talk to sara now. hi, sara. she's 30 years old and trying to watch her calorie intake, right? >> of course.

>> so what kind of milk do you recommend for that? >> okay, so watching calorie, you would go into this nuts and plants milk and here's why.s, you would go into this nuts and plants milk and here's why. i like -- the audience is great, right. they're like, whoo, love it. [applause] here's why. if you choose the unsweetened version, it can be three times fewer calories than skim milk which is great. oftentimes it has calcium and vitamin d added. >> unsweetened is like -- >> three times less calories. >> than skim milk. a great statistic to remember. >> it is. but, da, da, da, if you do get sweetened it becomes very high in sugar and more calories so really the unsweetened is the key. when it's sweetened, it just ou that ite sugar that gives you no nutrition. the other sort of con here, you just got to keep in mind compared to cow milk it is a lot less protein and a lot less like potassium and b12. >> that's again, something to

take into consideration. finally tehira, aspiring vegetarian, age 37. >> i like that. [ applause ] i understand. >> she's worried about not getting enough protein which we just talked about so there's a milk for you as well. >> being more of an aspiring vegetarian, soy milk is a great option because just like cow milk it has a lot of protein and they usually fortify it with calcium, vitamin d, b12, potassium. that's a good option because it will get you that protein. in terms of cons it could be a top eight allergen for people and could be more expensive than milk and if you get the sweetened again here, too much sugar. >> i'm glad you just mentioned that. we want to drive it home. we've given you three different choices. hopefully you guys found the milk for you but just to remind everybody a lot of added sugar l. the soy and nut-based milks.e i look at the ingredients to
