in wisconsin, a washout. nearly a foot of rain falling in just a few hours, leading to catastrophic flooding. the governor declaring a state of emergency. more than 100 people evacuated from homes in coon valley, wisconsin. neighborhoods underwater. portions of highway 35 forced to shut down, cars and even this truck unable to navigate through the high water. this bridge in lavalle washed away. roads buckling from saturation. a tree in kansas city crashing through this roof. >> the wind was blowing really hard and the visibility was like zero. >> reporter: lightning taking out this tree, leaving several trapped inside. >> the very strong storm came through. >> reporter: a home under construction knocked right off its foundation. and in iowa, winds clocked up to 82 miles per hour, and reports of a tornado. so we'll go from 90s along the east coast today to 70s by friday. in the meantime, it is a cold front that brings in that cool air but also significantly strong storms you can see from

house with the pillars in front of it. >> reporter: the president's already predicting a win in the general election tweeting, ron will be a fantastic governor. on to november. the battle over who could be the strongest ally of the president came to a head in arizona's republican senate primary too. former fighter pilot, martha mcsammy toppling hard line conservatives including sheriff joe arpaio to become her party's nominee. >> i'm humbled and honored to now stand before you for the very first time as your republican nominee for the united states senate. >> reporter: the president's gearing up for a tough battle too, painting a dark, even violent picture of what losing the midterms would mean for his agenda telling evangelical leaders at an event at the white house monday night, they will end everything immediately he said according to "the new york times" adding, when you look at antifa and some of these groups these are violent people. president trump trying to stoke

in sedona, you get the sense that john mccain's legacy is very much alive in their hearts. and today arizonaens will begin to say good-bye here at the state capitol at 10:00 a.m. this morning local time. john mccain will be brought here, he'll lie in state in the rotunda of the state capitol. his family will accompany him. there will be some private services and then this building will open and thousands of people in this 104-degree heat are expected to line up and say farewell to one of the great arizonaens. george. >> then again in the u.s. capitol on friday, of course, the funeral on saturday. terry moran, thanks very much. cecilia. okay, george. let's turn to the trump administration waging a battle with google. a new threat to regulate the search engine have both republicans and democrats sounding the alarm about free speech. the president claims search results are, quote, rigged with conservatives being shut out. he's even suggesting there's something illegal going on. the president is also taking on other social media giants. >> i think that google and

twitter and facebook, they're really treading on very, very troubled territory and they have to be careful. it's not fair to large portions of the population. >> and google responded with a forceful denial saying, we continually work to improve google search, and we never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment. george. >> thank you, cecilia. the latest on the nuclear standoff with north korea. tensions on the rise again as the pentagon considers restarting military exercises in the region just days after the president canceled secretary of state mike pompeo's mission in north korea. our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz is tracking it all. we've come a long way from president trump's declaration in singapore that the nuclear threat from north korea is over. >> reporter: boy, have we, george. one thing is clear this morning, however, despite what the president said right after that historic summit, the nuclear threat from north korea remains. president trump was convinced that kim jong-un would give up his nuclear weapons after his

meeting in june, and fast. >> starting that process very quickly. very, very quickly. absolutely. >> reporter: but that deal now seems in doubt. >> are they wishing or maybe changing their mind on de-nuclearization? it's possible. but we're not going to change our mind on the sanctions. we're not going to change our mind on de-nuclearization. >> reporter: last friday trump abruptly cancelling a planned meeting with secretary of state mike pompeo in north korea, saying we are not making sufficient progress. the north korean state news responding over the weekend by accusing the u.s. of hatching a criminal plot to unleash war while conducting diplomacy with a smile on its face. secretary of defense jim mattis yesterday making no guarantees about further suspensions of military exercises on the korean peninsula. >> we took the step to suspend several of the largest exercises as a good faith measure coming

out of the singapore summit. we have no plans at this time to suspend any more exercises. >> reporter: the secretary of state did issue a statement saying that america stands ready to engage with north korea once again, but only when chairman kim is ready to deliver on his commitment to completely de-nuclearize and it is unclear george, when or if that will happen. >> which is why the president canceled that trip. >> reporter: exactly. >> martha raddatz, thanks very much. cecilia? let's turn to that breaking news. pope francis speaking publicly at the vatican for the first time since he was accused of turning a blind eye to those sexual abuse allegations against an american cardinal. abc's david wright is at the vatican and, david, once again, no mention of these claims when the pope spoke just now. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. this is the first time we have seen pope francis since he refused to answer questions on

the papal plane about that explosive accusations leveled by an arch bishop. no mention today of the archbishop's call for him to resign. instead he spoke at length about his trip to ireland and spoke in particular about sitting down with survivors of sexual abuse. he said it wounded him deeply. he said he asked for the lord's forgiveness for the sins, the scandal and the betrayal. cecilia. >> david, exactly. no mention of that or those calls for his resignation. >> reporter: that's right, not personally but close associates of the pope have told the italian news agency he has no plans to resign. they describe him as 'embittered by these allegations. there is no provision here for a special counsel, no process of impeachment. under cannon law, the pope is the supreme judge. the only higher authority is god. cecilia.

>> david wright at the vatican, thank you. now we turn to breaking news overnight, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake rocked los angeles yesterday followed by more than a dozen aftershocks. the shaking was caught on this home surveillance video. there were no reports of injuries or damage but officials say last fight's quake was the biggest to hit the region in three years. glad no one's hurt. >> thank goodness for that. >> absolutely. we move on now to a dramatic rescue caught on camera. you'll see a police officer jump into action to save a family from a burning house, a family of seven, even though he had no special gear tore training. diane macedo with the story. good morning, diane. >> reporter: george, good morning. it's one of those videos that gives you goosebumps. the officer's body cam footage shows flames and smoke shooting from this home and you can hear him call for back-up. then he realizes he has no time to wait. >> fully engulfed. there are people inside. i need help. >> reporter: watch the daring moment a texas police officer

quickly sprints right into danger. >> is everybody out? >> mother-in-law and sister-in-law. >> where are they at? >> inside. >> they're inside? >> yeah. >> i got people inside that are trapped. >> reporter: officer sam click is behind the body camera. he says he was on patrol just before 2:00 a.m. saturday when he could hear the screams and see the flames from a burning home. >> cody, open the door! >> break that glass. >> there are kids in there. >> break this glass. >> cody. the house is on fire! >> reporter: click moves room to room before discovering a father and two babies -- >> hey, come on, boys. boys wake up. >> reporter: in another room the other children sound asleep, unaware of the danger around them. >> we got kids out here! come on, man. >> i woke them up and told them we all had to get up. they all followed me. i picked up the ones that i could, and then the ones that could walk all walked. >> reporter: racing against the flames, he gets the family to safety. >> get up, get up, come on.

>> reporter: the police department says officer click had no fire training or protective gear, but this morning, he says he had no choice but to help. >> our main duty is to preserve life. it was something i felt like i had to do. >> reporter: and that family is grateful. >> this just takes it to a whole new level of respect and thankfulness for what they do. >> reporter: the officer was reunited with the family where they got to thank him in person. while he may say he was just doing his job, george, the children's father says he went above and beyond. >> and i think we can all agree. diane, thanks very much. now to the u.s. open outrage. a french player punished for flipping her shirt around on the court while the men face no penalty for changing their shirts in the heat. abc's adrienne bankert is here, and people are saying this is a serious double standard. >> yeah, i can see cecilia's face right now as i'm looking at you and looking at the whole team here. >> i had nothing to do with it. don't look at me. >> it was hot outside for regular folk, and arthur ashe stadium in this kind of heat.

day two of the open, five players forced to withdraw. cornet was not one of them. she soldiered on after a ten-minute heat break and she did something a lot of guys have been doing all day. she quickly changed her shirt on court. she turned away from the cameras to do that. the reason, in the locker room she put her shirt on backwards and she noticed. she got a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct for changing her shirt. men are allowed to do that. women cannot. reaction on twitter, very swift. andy murray posted a picture with her son saying, where's his code violation? andy's mom tweeting about the sex violation, and federer, and djokovic both did this. she tweeted this is not fair and not right. alice warren speaking for many when she tweeted out, the whole situation is not fair, not right, tell your daughters. i have to say this, and i'm just making sure that i confirm all of this correctly.

had to forfeit their games because of the temperature. a startling update on the death toll from hurricane maria. that hit puerto rico so hard a year ago, nearly a year ago. the puerto rican government said at the time 64 people were killed. now the official estimate has skyrocketed. 2,975 killed by that hurricane. the island's governor called the announcement painful, and so many there still need help this morning. and we're coming up on labor day weekend with travel estimates in. airlines for america estimate that 16.5 million americans will fly over the long weekend. that's a half a million more than last year. friday expected to be the busiest travel day of the holiday. >> i'm bracing for having to go back to d.c. on friday. that will not be fun. the fierce backlash against louis ck after nine months out of the spotlight, the disgraced comedian returned to stand-up for the first time since admitting to sexual misconduct allegations by several women. abc's whit johnson is here. whit, no mention of that during the show. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. surprise and plenty of outrage

following the show. louis ck made a name for himself telling jokes about male hypocrisy, taking shots at his own sexual missteps. but in his comeback routine the comedian reportedly ignored the elephant in the room, bypassing the allegations that toppled his career. >> i'm the guy that women see and they go, eh. >> reporter: known for his raunchy standup routines, this morning, louis ck's controversial comeback is prompting a social media firestorm. the disgraced comedian performing stand-up over the weekend for the first time since admitting to exposing and touching himself in front of several women, but made no mention about those allegations on stage. >> on stage he didn't make any real reference to it. i'm not sure why. he just went on and pretended it was any other set. >> reporter: the internet exploding. comedian michael ian black, initially defending him in one post, writing, we'll take heat for this but people have to be allowed to serve their time and move on with their lives. others firing back.

one tweeting, it seems i missed the part when louis ck served time. i just remember him living quietly as a millionaire for less than a year. hollywood director judd apatow writing, the obvious thing you do when you hurt people and disappear for awhile is to return and talk about what you learned and tell people how you're going to help victims and others going forward. that hasn't happened here or with anyone who has been accused. last year, rebecca cory, one of the women who spoke out publicly about ck's behavior shared her story with abc news and believes the idea of him ever making a comeback is disturbing. >> it was just actually sort of common knowledge in the comedy world. people made jokes about it all the time. >> reporter: she said ck made a lewd suggestion to her on a pilot they worked on. the executive producers of the show, courtney cox and david arquette, offered to shut down production. cory refused. a decision she later regretted. >> i wanted to pretend like it never happened.

handle anti-police protests is sparking protests of its own. it's about its officer, officer betty jo shelby, who was acquitted of manslaughter for killing an unarmed black man and steve osunsami has the story. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. this is a big case caught on camera. betty jo shelby is now a sheriff's deputy with another police agency, but she says she has been teaching this class since october, and people are just now beginning to notice. she says she is teaching officers how to react when they are, quote, victimized by anti-police groups. >> that looks like a bad dude. >> reporter: call it a second act. >> shots fired. >> reporter: this former tulsa police officer seen here in a police surveillance video shooting an unarmed black man to death made national headlines doing so and now she says she's teaching other officers how to get through the aftermath of racially charged police shootings. >> when i was told that i would possibly never be in law enforcement again, i needed to find a purpose. so i made a commitment to help my brothers and sisters.

>> reporter: betty jo shelby was the woman behind the trigger when 40-year-old terrance crutcher was killed in september of 2016. it became another example of an unarmed black man shot and killed on camera by a white police officer. he was high on pcp, had left his suv in the middle of the road and the officers who surrounded him say he wasn't listening when they told him to stop. shelby was tried for manslaughter and acquitted. protesters cursed her name in the streets. >> i had to physically deal with leaving my home unexpectedly due to threats. i had to come up with a solution as to how to financially survive because i was put on administrative leave. [ chanting ] >> reporter: her new four-hour course trains officers to deal with what she calls the ferguson effect, referencing the shooting of michael brown in 2014. groups protesting the police

found their voice. >> officers, they are scared of the media tormenting them. they're scared of activist groups tormenting them. >> reporter: the course has people marching against the police again. >> who is concerned about the aftermath that the crutchers are having to deal with? >> reporter: the course is taught in different police offices and one of them is the tulsa county sheriff's department. the sheriff in a statement says he stands behind the class, says that the instructor is qualified to teach it and, george, he points out that this is all free, that no one is getting paid. >> is the crutcher family weighing in? >> reporter: absolutely. the sister of the victim, the man shot dead, in a statement says when she first heard about this class it made her sick to her stomach. she says she and her family asked the sheriff to cancel the class or replace the instructor, and he's agreed to do neither. >> steve osunsami. thanks very much. michael. all right. thank you, george.

ramedics, when they are in the back of an ambulance and working on a patient. do they stay buckled up or work on that patient? there is new technology you mentioned that is coming out that could help keep them safer. watch this 14,000-pound ambulance violently roll over. >> a complete just at 25 miles an hour. >> reporter: "gma" is there for this demonstration, showing the importance of seat belts in the back of an ambulance. every year, there are an estimated 4,500 ambulance accidents on the road, and in the majority, 84% of those accidents, the emts or paramedics were not using seat belts, including this crash earlier this year outside of cincinnati. and this 2014 accident involving a head-on collision. brian nagel was in the back of that ambulance working on a patient and was severely injured. >> i was sitting on a bench seat.

moving on now to our series "supermarket savvy." this morning we're taking a look at all kinds of st wwn jackson.e to to welcome back. >> thank you. >> let's get definitions down. describe whole grains. >> whole grains has three parts, but white grains are processed to remove two of those parts so white grains are a lot less nutritious. >> that gets to the different -- we were just talking about this. brown rice and white rice. >> let's talk about rice. so in general when you're looking at white or brown rice they're 200 calories for a cup. same calories but where the difference comes is brown rice has a lot more fiber, six times more fiber than white rice. yes, and minerals. i love this. >> i've never seen people so excited.>>in by. >> yeah, and they really are more nutritious in minerals, too. they have more magnesium, more zinc. and it's something to think about. white grains are empty calories, right? you get a lot more nutrition with the whole grain. >> let's talk about bread. all kinds of different varieties. >> here we go. white, we have whole wheat and we have whole grain. so whole wheat and whole grain are in the same family. again, look at this. they're about 80 calories a slice so similar in calories but really the nutrition is so different. in these whole grain versions you'll get like three times the fiber, double the protein. >> again. >> again and so when you get more fiber and protein, the cool thing is you get more full so -- >> it's helping on a diet. >> absolutely. so a lot of people avoid this, but as long as you get to whole grains you're going to get more full. now, there's a big thing i want to teach everybody. when you are reading labels, it has to say 100% whole wheat or 100% whole grain because if it

just says wheat -- >> what does that mean? >> wheat means there's just wheat in there. it doesn't mean whole grain. you really have to look even at the ingredient list and see. >> just because it's brown doesn't mean it's whole wheat. >> exactly. you have got to look for the word whole, whole, whole. >> got it. we all got that, right? >> thank you. >> we'll talk about pasta. >> pasta, here's what we have here. we have white pasta, we have whole wheat pasta, and then we have a bean-based pasta, and just like all the others, this white pasta will be the least nutritious. the whole grain will have three times more fiber. we've learned this before. here's the big a-ha, is this bean-based pasta not only has more fiber but it has two times the protein. so it is protein packed, right? that's great news, great news. we are back now with more of our "gma" goes country. mat paula faris sat down with luke bryan. as he takes on a new project and reveals the secrets behind his biggest hits and you got to talk to him right after being nominated for a cma entertainer of the year. >> going for his third. we spoke with him after that and in his new restaurant call luke's 32 bridge named after a bridge in his hometown and got a glimpse of what has made him who it is and where it starred on his father's peanut farm in rural georgia. whether he's shaking it on the stadium stage or sitting at the american idol judges' table he is one of the busiest men in country music and fresh off his cma entertainer of the year nomination.
