the papal plane about that explosive accusations leveled by an arch bishop. no mention today of the archbishop's call for him to resign. instead he spoke at length about his trip to ireland and spoke in particular about sitting down with survivors of sexual abuse. he said it wounded him deeply. he said he asked for the lord's forgiveness for the sins, the scandal and the betrayal. cecilia. >> david, exactly. no mention of that or those calls for his resignation. >> reporter: that's right, not personally but close associates of the pope have told the italian news agency he has no plans to resign. they describe him as 'embittered by these allegations. there is no provision here for a special counsel, no process of impeachment. under cannon law, the pope is the supreme judge. the only higher authority is god. cecilia.

had to forfeit their games because of the temperature. a startling update on the death toll from hurricane maria. that hit puerto rico so hard a year ago, nearly a year ago. the puerto rican government said at the time 64 people were killed. now the official estimate has skyrocketed. 2,975 killed by that hurricane. the island's governor called the announcement painful, and so many there still need help this morning. and we're coming up on labor day weekend with travel estimates in. airlines for america estimate that 16.5 million americans will fly over the long weekend. that's a half a million more than last year. friday expected to be the busiest travel day of the holiday. >> i'm bracing for having to go back to d.c. on friday. that will not be fun. the fierce backlash against louis ck after nine months out of the spotlight, the disgraced comedian returned to stand-up for the first time since admitting to sexual misconduct allegations by several women. abc's whit johnson is here. whit, no mention of that during the show. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. surprise and plenty of outrage

following the show. louis ck made a name for himself telling jokes about male hypocrisy, taking shots at his own sexual missteps. but in his comeback routine the comedian reportedly ignored the elephant in the room, bypassing the allegations that toppled his career. >> i'm the guy that women see and they go, eh. >> reporter: known for his raunchy standup routines, this morning, louis ck's controversial comeback is prompting a social media firestorm. the disgraced comedian performing stand-up over the weekend for the first time since admitting to exposing and touching himself in front of several women, but made no mention about those allegations on stage. >> on stage he didn't make any real reference to it. i'm not sure why. he just went on and pretended it was any other set. >> reporter: the internet exploding. comedian michael ian black, initially defending him in one post, writing, we'll take heat for this but people have to be allowed to serve their time and move on with their lives. others firing back.

one tweeting, it seems i missed the part when louis ck served time. i just remember him living quietly as a millionaire for less than a year. hollywood director judd apatow writing, the obvious thing you do when you hurt people and disappear for awhile is to return and talk about what you learned and tell people how you're going to help victims and others going forward. that hasn't happened here or with anyone who has been accused. last year, rebecca cory, one of the women who spoke out publicly about ck's behavior shared her story with abc news and believes the idea of him ever making a comeback is disturbing. >> it was just actually sort of common knowledge in the comedy world. people made jokes about it all the time. >> reporter: she said ck made a lewd suggestion to her on a pilot they worked on. the executive producers of the show, courtney cox and david arquette, offered to shut down production. cory refused. a decision she later regretted. >> i wanted to pretend like it never happened.

i wanted to do my job. those opportunities are few and far between. i most certainly didn't want to be the person that was responsible for shutting down a production or even being part of the narrative. >> reporter: the audience at the cellar now joining that narrative. the club saying they've received mixed reviews, some applauding the show. others complaining that they should have been warned and given the choice to attend. >> obviously, we learned some things from this episode, and the main thing is that people who don't want to see him, we need to make sure that they're not ambushed. >> reporter: now, immediately following the allegations, fx, hbo and netflix all dropped louis ck from upcoming projects. the comedy cellar's owner said ck received a standing ovation for his 15-minute performance but that club taking a lot of heat for even allowing him onto that stage. >> sure are. okay, whit, thanks very much. we're going to turn now to oklahoma where a course for police officers about how to

handle anti-police protests is sparking protests of its own. it's about its officer, officer betty jo shelby, who was acquitted of manslaughter for killing an unarmed black man and steve osunsami has the story. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. this is a big case caught on camera. betty jo shelby is now a sheriff's deputy with another police agency, but she says she has been teaching this class since october, and people are just now beginning to notice. she says she is teaching officers how to react when they are, quote, victimized by anti-police groups. >> that looks like a bad dude. >> reporter: call it a second act. >> shots fired. >> reporter: this former tulsa police officer seen here in a police surveillance video shooting an unarmed black man to death made national headlines doing so and now she says she's teaching other officers how to get through the aftermath of racially charged police shootings. >> when i was told that i would possibly never be in law enforcement again, i needed to find a purpose. so i made a commitment to help my brothers and sisters.

>> reporter: betty jo shelby was the woman behind the trigger when 40-year-old terrance crutcher was killed in september of 2016. it became another example of an unarmed black man shot and killed on camera by a white police officer. he was high on pcp, had left his suv in the middle of the road and the officers who surrounded him say he wasn't listening when they told him to stop. shelby was tried for manslaughter and acquitted. protesters cursed her name in the streets. >> i had to physically deal with leaving my home unexpectedly due to threats. i had to come up with a solution as to how to financially survive because i was put on administrative leave. [ chanting ] >> reporter: her new four-hour course trains officers to deal with what she calls the ferguson effect, referencing the shooting of michael brown in 2014. groups protesting the police

found their voice. >> officers, they are scared of the media tormenting them. they're scared of activist groups tormenting them. >> reporter: the course has people marching against the police again. >> who is concerned about the aftermath that the crutchers are having to deal with? >> reporter: the course is taught in different police offices and one of them is the tulsa county sheriff's department. the sheriff in a statement says he stands behind the class, says that the instructor is qualified to teach it and, george, he points out that this is all free, that no one is getting paid. >> is the crutcher family weighing in? >> reporter: absolutely. the sister of the victim, the man shot dead, in a statement says when she first heard about this class it made her sick to her stomach. she says she and her family asked the sheriff to cancel the class or replace the instructor, and he's agreed to do neither. >> steve osunsami. thanks very much. michael. all right. thank you, george.

we are back now with an exclusive first look at the new technology designed to keep you and first responders safe if your ambulance crashes. the feature could possibly save lives and it's being rolled out this week. abc's david kerley is in arlington, virginia with more. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, owit ry a ler first responders,

ramedics, when they are in the back of an ambulance and working on a patient. do they stay buckled up or work on that patient? there is new technology you mentioned that is coming out that could help keep them safer. watch this 14,000-pound ambulance violently roll over. >> a complete just at 25 miles an hour. >> reporter: "gma" is there for this demonstration, showing the importance of seat belts in the back of an ambulance. every year, there are an estimated 4,500 ambulance accidents on the road, and in the majority, 84% of those accidents, the emts or paramedics were not using seat belts, including this crash earlier this year outside of cincinnati. and this 2014 accident involving a head-on collision. brian nagel was in the back of that ambulance working on a patient and was severely injured. >> i was sitting on a bench seat.

wearing seatbelts it could look like this. a simulation test also conducted by immi showing how the dummies go flying. this side-by-side view showing hoimportans for emts to buckle up for the safety of themselves and their patients. >> without being restrained, it's an opportunity for a lot of things to go wrong. >> reporter: for brian nagel, now a safety advocate, putting these seat belts in ambulances is the step in the right direction. >> we can't save patients if we're not safe ourselves. >> reporter: nagel suffered severe head injuries. he is no longer working in the back of an ambulance. the laws around the states are different as to whether emts and paramedics are required to have these belts on but the new technology could help make it a little easier. as i mentioned, when you have that impact, the belt gives. now, i'll give it a shot so the idea is all of a sudden we're in a crash and i get a little more give to slow you down if you're in the crash, guys. new techlo jt hitting the market. >> that demonstration was shocking. so thank you for that. got to keep everyone safe. >> definitely.

boston goes from 97 today to friday at 71. nearly 30 degrees in that dropoff. new york city is going to do the same thing. folks from texas to mississippi are saying, it's so hot here all the time. here a lot of the schools don't have air conditioning. that's one of the big factors. we'll be watching these advisories for at least the next 24 hours. >> wow, that's definitely a difference. we move on to politics right now and the results are coming in from key primaries, setting up a history-making race to run the state of florida, a key senate race in arizona and we want to go back to terry moran in phoenix. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning. a big night last night, voters here in arizona making history, this state will almost certainly have its first woman senator. republican martha mcsally facing off against democrat kyrsten sinema and that race is expected to be the democrats' best chance perhaps to pick up a seat, but mcsally was seen as the strongest republican.

if you're a centrist in florida, you're out of luck. >> are y'all ready to flip florida blue? >> reporter: overnight, a major upset in florida's governor's race setting the stage for a bruising battle in november. on the left, tallahassee mayor andrew gillum, a bernie sanders-backed progressive coming out on top over a favorite of the democratic establishment. >> i got to tell you all, i am overwhelmed. there were just a few people, just a few people who said that this moment would not be possible. >> reporter: gillum, the first black nominee for florida governor for either party now set to face off against president trump's candidate of choice, ron desantis. that high-profile endorsement from the president ultimately put him over the top. >> i'm not always the most popular guy in d.c., but i did have support from someone in washington. if you walk down pennsylvania avenue he lives in the white house with the pillars in front it. >> reporter: the president already predicting a win in the

general election, tweeting, ron will be a fantastic governor. on to november. the president is gearing up for a tough battle too, painting a dark, even violent picture of what losing the midterms would mean for his agenda, telling evangelical leaders at an event at the white house monday night, they will end everything immediately, he said, according to "the new york times." adding, when you look at antifa and these groups, they are violent people. president trump there showing that he understands the key to success in this election is not moving to the center as traditionally the case in general elections, but in getting your base, getting your voters to the polls. >> thanks very much. >> the president just tweeted that he's backing ron desantis and attacked his opponent. >> those races are coming up. all right. let's get to an update on a story we told you before. high cost of online dating. ladies, take a look at this picture. paul gonzalez of california has been arrested, suspected of being the so-called dine and dasher.

dazzling audiences at her world tour with husband carey hart, daughter willow and son, jameson along for the journey posting on social media along the way. the family of four is currently making their way through australia. ♪ over now >> reporter: and that's where hart posted this to instagram on tuesday saying, want to know thousand glamorous tour can be, jameson has hand, foot and mouth. hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a common virus known as coxsackie. it occurs most often in the summer and fall, and children can get this virus at day care, summer camps and schools. hart revealed that when he took his young son out for breakfast a woman kept, quote, staring at him and while his post was met with mostly supportive comments some criticized the motocross star for taking his son out. one user saying, you expose children and adults to hf and m, i would be giving you looks too. >> hand, foot and mouth can look really scary because of the blisters in and around the mouth and the hands and feet, but it's important to remember this is a virus like any other virus. >> reporter: doctors around the country are currently reporting an uptick in cases of the virus.

it is seen mostly in children but adults can get it too, and recently major league baseball players noah syndergaard and jay happ were benched when they came down with hand, foot and mouth. >> the key for parents, there's no true treatment for hand, foot and mouth. what we do is support kids through it by giving them hydration. and also by keeping the fever under control and keeping pain under control. >> reporter: the virus is transmitted when you come into contact with someone who has it, either through the air or by touch. doctors suggest people should wash their hands with soap and water, avoid sharing drinks or utensils and clean all surfaces that someone with the virus may have touched to stop the spread. doctors say symptoms of hand, foot and mouth usually clear up in just a few days. that's good news for the hart family om pin12 more tour dates in australia ahead. now, parents are told to keep their children home when they have this particular virus, which usually manifests itself

moving on now to our series "supermarket savvy." this morning we're taking a look at all kinds of st wwn jackson.e to to welcome back. >> thank you. >> let's get definitions down. describe whole grains. >> whole grains has three parts, but white grains are processed to remove two of those parts so white grains are a lot less nutritious. >> that gets to the different -- we were just talking about this. brown rice and white rice. >> let's talk about rice. so in general when you're looking at white or brown rice they're 200 calories for a cup. same calories but where the difference comes is brown rice has a lot more fiber, six times more fiber than white rice. yes, and minerals. i love this. >> i've never seen people so excited.>>in by. >> yeah, and they really are more nutritious in minerals, too. they have more magnesium, more zinc. and it's something to think about. white grains are empty calories, right? you get a lot more nutrition with the whole grain. >> let's talk about bread. all kinds of different varieties. >> here we go. white, we have whole wheat and we have whole grain. so whole wheat and whole grain are in the same family. again, look at this. they're about 80 calories a slice so similar in calories but really the nutrition is so different. in these whole grain versions you'll get like three times the fiber, double the protein. >> again. >> again and so when you get more fiber and protein, the cool thing is you get more full so -- >> it's helping on a diet. >> absolutely. so a lot of people avoid this, but as long as you get to whole grains you're going to get more full. now, there's a big thing i want to teach everybody. when you are reading labels, it has to say 100% whole wheat or 100% whole grain because if it

just says wheat -- >> what does that mean? >> wheat means there's just wheat in there. it doesn't mean whole grain. you really have to look even at the ingredient list and see. >> just because it's brown doesn't mean it's whole wheat. >> exactly. you have got to look for the word whole, whole, whole. >> got it. we all got that, right? >> thank you. >> we'll talk about pasta. >> pasta, here's what we have here. we have white pasta, we have whole wheat pasta, and then we have a bean-based pasta, and just like all the others, this white pasta will be the least nutritious. the whole grain will have three times more fiber. we've learned this before. here's the big a-ha, is this bean-based pasta not only has more fiber but it has two times the protein. so it is protein packed, right? that's great news, great news. >> her nickname is nail gun diva. >> a bedazzled nail gun i would imagine. how many houses are you working on out there? >> 20 something houses today -- this week. and they've just purchased some land for hopefully about 40 more in the next couple of years as soon as they get the money raised. we're working on one at a time. working on one together with a big crew and it's awesome. >> we've all known about president carter's work with it. how did you get hooked up? >> we got hooked up through karen hitcocks and the teammate all-star game was down in dallas and saw her work with those athletes down there, athletes we were fortunate enough to have on the foundation at the time and just the marriage got started. then trisha and i went down to swing a hammer. and just -- >> new orleans after katrina.

about ten years ago so building with the carters ever since. >> a lot of houses. that's great work. >> awesome work from you too. garth, you made a big announcement that you're doing something in south bend, indiana, that's never been done before. what is that? >> well, they opened up the house that rockne built for concerts. we were lucky enough to be the inaugural concert there so we'll try to rock the house that rockne built so this is going to be a lot of fun. >> think about it. you never try, you actually always do it, man. so we know it's going to be a great show for those fans out there without a doubt. [ applause ] you also, garth, you also surprised your fans with a new triple live album and, trisha, you said it's the best album she's ever heard or best sounding record you've ever heard, is that true? >> yeah, i have to say, i mean, a live album is -- if it does its job well it makes you feel like you were at the show.

we are back now with more of our "gma" goes country. mat paula faris sat down with luke bryan. as he takes on a new project and reveals the secrets behind his biggest hits and you got to talk to him right after being nominated for a cma entertainer of the year. >> going for his third. we spoke with him after that and in his new restaurant call luke's 32 bridge named after a bridge in his hometown and got a glimpse of what has made him who it is and where it starred on his father's peanut farm in rural georgia. whether he's shaking it on the stadium stage or sitting at the american idol judges' table he is one of the busiest men in country music and fresh off his cma entertainer of the year nomination.
