that's not a big difference, but those fires have burned more than five times the average acreage. >> now this map shows you where wildfires are burning right now, including the largest fire ever in california, the mendocino complex. it's almost fully contained. 93% at current check. now we're not even a year past the north bay wildfires which rank among the most destructive and deadliest in state history. >> and of course wildfires can have a lasting impact, enduring for decades after those fires are extinguished. we have team coverage tonight with two examples. >> abc 7 news report laura anthony will join us from the oakland hills. let's begin with wayne freedman in the wine country in healdsburg. wayne? >> good evening, kristen. this is an economics story. the numbers aren't in yet, but the talk on the street is. we're seeing a drop in tourism in north bay, in healdsburg, especially to the wildfires. you can blame perception. empty glasses, waiting tables. they're a strange sight in

healdsburg during tourist season. >> it's never this quiet at noon. >> and the blame? >> the misperception that the wine country is on fire, and we're not. >> hotels and restaurants, tasting rooms all report a drop in business, down as much as 30%, maybe more. >> we're about a third of what we should be getting in a normal august-september time frame. >> if anyone would be doing well, look at bill williamson who runs and owns the only free tasting rooms in home. he and others had hoped for more with harvest. tourists are coming, but not as expected. >> we had fires, and then we had fires and mud slides in southern cal. and then recently a little fire up here. and people just contribute now california equals fire country, don't go. >> we're definitely starting to feel the effects of the fire. especially with summer, we didn't have a lot of tourists in town. i believe that they canceled a element of their reservations coming out to wine country. >> some, but not everyone.

before she left for this vacation, sue from michigan imagined all of the state in flames. what a surprise, she says, when she arrived. >> i thought i might see a lot of devastation. but they had to drive me to it. >> they had to drive her to it. it's worth noting that after the wildfires in october, sales taxes here in healdsburg, revenues from sales taxes dropped 11%. and then they recovered. we don't have the numbers yet from this season. they're hoping those numbers are better. live in healdsburg, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> wayne, thank you. last october's tubbs fire in the north bay ranks as the third deadliest wildfire in state history, blamed for 22 deaths. >> the second deadliest fire in california is the oakland hills fire in october 1991. 25 people died. 2900 buildings also burned down. more than a quarter century later, it's not just the people who live here who are worried about what would happen if fires sparked there again. >> abc 7 news reporter laura

anthony is live now with that story. laura? >> well, hi, dan. many companies are so afraid of fire losses that they won't even sell insurance to new buyers here in the hills. others have taken it a step further. they're telling their old customers, people who have been with them for decades, to go get their insurance somewhere else. >> that roof is going to explode! >> it's an they're did suffer a devastating fire. nearly three decades ago. but oakland's hiller highlands hasn't seen anything like it since. >> i was disappointed. they should ensure us. >> still, hiller residents fred perkins received a letter from his insurance carrier saying his 15-year-old homeowners policy was not being renewed. the reason? >> the property listed poses an unacceptable risk for wildfire. >> perkins has since learned about a half dozen of his neighbors received similar notices. >> they told me what a great customer i was and how they really appreciate my business.

and then told me there was no alternative at this point. >> according to the california insurance department, nonrenewals in areas with potentially high fire danger have increased in recent years. but the vast majority of homeowners can still find insurance. thinking is a growing problem in california. in alameda county, in particular, about 8.9% of the homes have been rated by the insurers as high or very high risk. that compares to tuolumne county where 89% of the homes have been rated high or very high risk. >> oakland broker told us while some companies are running from the hills, many others are sticking around, though often for a price. >> there are options through brokers where brokers have maybe six or eight different options or possible options for a property, depending on the risks. there is a scale to the risk. >> brokers say there are options, and in some cases

out you. also reach michael on his facebook page and through abc7news.com. a person involved in the case of a missing san francisco man was in court today, but not on charges related to that case. lance silva is a person of interest in the disappearance of brian egg. a headless and handless corporation was found in egg's home earlier this month. abc 7 reporter vic lee is live in dublin now with what we're learning about silva. vic? >> well, kristen, the san francisco medical examiner still has to identify that body. that body so mutilated and decomposed that reportedly the m.e. has to use dna to do that. now, there are two poempbs interest in this case. one of them was released from custody. the other one appeared here in court in dublin. lance silva, person of interest in the case of missing brian egg. alameda county prosecutors say he violated his probation on a grand theft conviction seven

years ago. this after san francisco police arrested him two weeks ago for financial crimes, id theft and homicide. these charges related to the disappearance of the 65-year-old man who lived in the south of market home. police found a body without a head or hands in a fish tank. but san francisco prosecutors declined to file formal charges, saying the investigation continues. abc 7 news obtained this court document which gives an insight into silva's case. egg's neighbors say he disappeared some time in june, and that they would see strangers coming and going from his house. silva and another man were arrested in mid-august after police responded to neighbors' calls that a crime scene cleaning crew was in front of this t home. after a search of silva's belongings, police found egg's credit card and cash, which investigators believe silva withdrew from egg's bank account. on june 1, silva reportedly bought a bmw here at the auto

sales lot in newark. he paid $5500. dealership owner remembers the sale. what name did he use? >> brian egg. >> everything looked legit. >> he paid part cash, part card. >> and the credit card said it belonged to whom? >> his name, brian egg. . >> when police showed up here august 16th, the day of his arrest, they showed him lance silva's picture. >> yeah, it was a picture of the guy that purchased the car from me. >> well, according to the court document we obtained, silva admitted to police he drove the bmw, but said that he found the car in front of egg's home. now police also say that silva paid for the crime scene cleaning crew using egg's credit card. the judge continued the arraignment for two more weeks. silva is being held without bail. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> all right, vic, thank you. this is an absolutely just

frightening case, macabre case. we have put together a timeline of the clues and how the investigation unfold on abc7news.com. now along the peninsula, palo alto police are still searching for a woman who went missing almost two week association. 66-year-old lamatha miller disappeared friday, august 17th. she was last seen driving her silver 2002 mercedes-benz away from the country time market on university avenue in east palo alto. the investigation has so far not revealed signs of foul play, but police are asking the public for some help. the oakland raiders may be moving to las vegas, but they stepped up to help save sports in the oakland unified school district. district officials had planned to drop several sports because of budget issues. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas spoke with the raiders owner marc davis about this very kind and timely donation, eric.

get this thing going, and it's all based on, you know, the raiders are born in oakland and it's always going to be part of our dna. >> that earlier donation helped save sports including girls golf and girls lacrosse, but several other sports were left on the bubble until the silver and black stepped in, including wrestling, swimming, boys golf, boys tennis, boys volleyball and girls badminton. several girls sports were in jeopardy. so did davis. >> i think the fact that there were such a dispreportion nat amount of women sports cut really stood out the me in this situation. and felt that it was great thing to help, help with them. >> even this girl's golf coach was impressed. >> speaking as a 49er fan, i had to kind of take a deep breath and give thanks to the oakland raiders for making that donation. because of them, these girls are at the course right now. >> so the sports teams are set for this year. but what about future years? well, the unified school district has set up a gofundme

new at 6:00, a san jose teacher was arrested in his classroom today. police say he had a loaded gun with him. 35-year-old charles soe is a suspect in a road rage incident in february. police say he attacked a man and took his cell phone. after an investigation, an arrest warrant is issued. he was arrested at middle school and will be booked into the santa clara county jail on charges of robbery, possession of a firearm at a school. the school's website lists him as an eighth grade language arts teacher. san francisco is testing out the idea of a safe injection site, a place specifically designed for people to inject illegal drugs. there is nothing like it in this country.

>> other cities around the world do have places like this. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow gives us a look at what san francisco's site would look like. >> the site opens following the passage of a they'll be would allow san francisco to open safe injection sites under a three-year pilot program. the legislation will now be sent to governor jerry brown for his signature. mayor london breed touring safer inside today, the first model of an overdose prevention program in the united states. the mayor says the safe injection site like this one would provide an alternative for people who inject themselves on city sidewalks and leave used needles behind. >> part of a solution to addressing those particular challenges would be to bring this indoors. >> still, the mayor recognizes there are legal concerns for providers who could be charged federally. >> we want to open one as soon as possible, but i do think that it's going to be important that we protect the people who are going to be working at these facilities.

>> the injection site will provide supplies, education and resources. it will not supply drugs. >> at the existing sites that are open demonstrate clearly that not one overdose has occurred in any of these sites around the world. >> this is the time in history to give this a chance. it's been proven in other countries. >> alex crawl agrees. the principle scientist at rti international, an independent nonprofit institute says he questions the findings of a new review of research that found safe consumption sites don't have a significant effect on overdose mortality. >> there is definitely the possibility of biases in terms of the small number of studies they actually chose to include in that study. >> laura thomas is the deputy state director in california for the drug policy alliance. >> this is not about enabling drug use. this is about providing people with some dignity and respect so that they can take that next step to get into treatment, if that's what they want. >> the safer inside demonstration is open through friday at glide in the tenderloin neighborhood.

there will be no consumption of drugs at this demonstration silent. it's not clear when an actual site could open. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> okay, melanie, thanks. as we said, san francisco's safe injection site initiative is modelled after a program in canada that started in vancouver. we spoke with people there about how that program is working. >> we found that in the first four years the facility was open, there were over one thousand overdose events within the facility itself. >> dr. mj malloy is with the british columbia center on substance use. he's been studying the impacts of safe injection sites like this one in vancouver called incite. it opened in 2003. >> the primary objectives of insight are to reduce the risk of disease transmission, and in particular hiv and hepatitis c, to reduce deaths from overdose, and to increase uptake of medical care. >> this video shows an addict coming to a center with heroin

he bought on the streets, then shooting up with a nurse watching. he then relaxes in the chill-out room where he can talk with caseworkers who may convince him to go into rehab. researcher says the safe injection sites work. there are roughly two dozen similar centers across canada. >> rates of fatal overdos in the areas around insight declined 35% after the facility opened versus only 9% in the rest of the city of vancouver. >> there was also a 30% increase in people getting into detox and new hiv infections have declined 96%. but it isn't just addicts who experienced a significant change. neighbors were concerned safe injection sites would lead to an increase in problems in the neighborhood. it didn't happen. >> which makes sense. instead of people injecting in back alleys they were injecting at insight. so they were out of the public's way. >> public opinion polls in vancouver show support for the safe injection sites at about 80%. >> around the world, there are

the final day of viewing for aretha franklin just ended. the queen of soul passed away almost two weeks ago from cancer. fans lined up for hours today in detroit to pay their respects to the 76-year-old legend. franklin's funeral is on friday and limited to family, friends, and special guests. an all-star lineup of speakers and performers include former president clinton, reverend al sharpton and reverend jesse jackson, tyler perry, smokey robinson, jennifer hudson, and stevie wonder. we'll stream the service through our app and on abc7news.com. it is expected to begin friday at 6:30 a.m. our time and last about six hours. well, tonight veterinarians at the lindsey wildlife hospital in walnut creek are fighting to get an injured eagle back up in the air. the struggle is even more frustrating because investigators say that majestic bird was shot.

for this injured golden eagle, the flight to the examination room was in the arms of veterinarians. they were examining the progress of the bird's injured right wing. the 6 1/2 pound female was discovered last week in pittsburgh, but vets at the lindsey wildlife hospital were stunned when they x-rayed the injured bone. >> notice the pellet right there. >> a lot of nuisance animals will sometimes get shot. it's hard to see why would somebody shoot an eveningle? >> fortunately, they say the pellet missed the joint area. but after removing it, the amount of damage was severe enough to require surgically implanted pins. >> and i secured them all together. so it's sort of holding that fracture securely. >> regular medication helps fight infection and inflammation, of course. but they say the bandage wrap will likely remain on for several weeks. if all goes well, the vets will then begin physical therapy, stretching the joints and wing muscles in the hopes that the golden evening occasional return
