there's outrage in the meantime in new mexico over the release of three people linked to that desert compound where a little boy was found dead and several other children were seen living in filth. the abuse charges against three suspects were dropped because prosecutors missed a deadline to hold a hearing required by state law. prosecutors say the suspects were muslim extremists who were training the kids to carry out school shootings. two of them, including the father of the boy who was found dead are still in jail for now. the defense attorney spoke to reporters. >> it's the cause of death of a 4-year-old boy rather than the inflammatory issues about these people's religion or race or whether they're jihadists. >> it's not clear how the young boy died but his father is accused of denying him improper health care.

they performed cpr, reviving her before emergency crews arrived. they've now been reunited and picked up a special honor from the state police for their heroic actions that day. >> fascinating video there. the mysterious woman seen ringing a doorbell has now been located. security video caught her on camera, and the images quickly went viral leading to an outpouring of concern. police have confirmed she is safe after a shooting that involved her boyfriend and a case of domestic violence. even more strange. jury selection begins next week in the murder trial of a chicago police officer charged with shooting a black teenager. the death of laquan mcdonald prompted national protest. >> and now jason van dyke is speaking out in his own defense saying he was doing the job he was trained to do.

here is pierre thomas. >> reporter: the shooting that shook chicago, 17-year-old laquan mcdonald shot down in the street, this 2014 death sparking protests across the city amid allegations of a coverup. officer jason van dyke claimed that mcdonald tried to attack him, raising the knife over his head. none of that is caught on tape. van dyke is facing murder charges, and three of his fellow officers are accused of falsifying police reports. now on the eve of his trial, the officer is speaking to the local fox affiliate saying he once contemplated suicide. >> i had lots of thoughts going through my head. i thought about driving at a high speed into an embankment. >> reporter: he says he fired his weapon because he feared for

officer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager. >> prosecutors called oliver killer in blue. he says he fired into the car to protect his partner. but video of the incident contradicts his statements. and his partner also testified that he never felt threatened. >> the conviction is a rarity for an on-duty police officer and the first for a dallas county officer in 45 years. an uber driver is the focus of a new stand your ground case in florida. he says it was self-defense when he shot and killed an angry driver who had been tailing his car and cut him off. for now local authorities agree. steve osunsami explains why. >> reporter: the video shared by the dashboard of the uber

driver, robert westlake who's in the middle of a fair and legally carries a side arm. for reasons he doesn't understand, the driver of this pickup truck who has been tailing him suddenly pulls in front of him. jason jumps out who had just had a fight with his girlfriend. he thinks she is getting the ride, but she's still back at the bar. in the back seat is a stranger. >> i see something. >> [ bleep ]. >> reporter: when he threatens the driver with a gun that police never found, the driver shoots the man and he dies. >> came towards me, shouting he's got a pistol. >> this is a justifiable homicide all day long. >> reporter: police sharing these texts. >> here's a message for the hot heads. don't do that stuff. good people carry guns, and they will shoot you. >> reporter: the stand your ground law has some people in florida outraged.

but police say this case is textbook. prosecutors are reviewing it. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. turning to washington now and white house advisers and allies are reportedly concerned that the president is unprepared for a potential legal storm in the event of a blue wave this november. sources tell the washington post there's no action plan in place to deal with the likelihood of subpoenas or impeachment. now if democrats win control of the house in the midterm elections, these are all possibilities, we're told. the president's current legal team is not equipped. and there's talk of bringing in more lawyers familiar with white collar crime and scandals. we turn to the stalled talks with north korea. the president tweeted that joint military exercises with south korea have been suspended. he cited the high cost and blaming china. but he says the drills could be

in ohio are recovering after exposure to what's called an unknown substance. most were guards. this is south of columbus. police believe that it was the white powder fentanyl. and prisoners were locked down after employees at ten facilities needed treatment after exposure to a liquid synthetic drug. one person has died after a salmonella outbreak tied to kosher chicken. at least 17 people in other states have been sickened. the cases were reported between last september and this past june. but the cdc is recommending consumers avoid empire kosher chicken. this morning empire says it has no data connecting the outbreak with its products. drinking water is being shut

off at public schools in detroit after the water at more than a dozen schools tested positive for high levels of copper and lead. old pipes and fixtures are to blame. the superintendent is acting out of caution. now to an annual battle that has everyone seeing red in eastern spain. >> the clothes-washing nightmare known at tomatina. they spent an hour firing tomatoes at each other. >> 160 tons of the fruit flew across the town. and the tradition dates back to the 1940s. they don't know what started it, if it was an angry fight. if they were throwing tomatoes h among friends. >> it was stopped under a spanish dictator, but now the
