president is asked to explain his warning that violence could break out if republicans lose in november. abc's janai norman has the story. good morning, janai. >> reporter: guys, good morning. midterms are often seen as a key test for how the president is doing and months out things are already getting ugly, in particular in florida where the race for governor is already plagued with those accusations of racism. the president's pick for florida governor, republican ron desantis, is coming under fire. >> the last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state. >> reporter: those comments on fox news attacking his opponent, tallahassee mayor andrew gillum, the first black man to win the democratic nominee for florida governor. the backlash to the comment monkey this up was fierce and swift and the head of the democratic party saying it's disgusting that ron desantis is launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles. team desantis calling that claim of racism

elections. we'll be watching, janai, thank you. president trump announced that don mcgahn is stepping down this fall. the departure follows reports that mcgahn has been cooperating extensively with robert mueller's russia investigation, but the president insists he's not concerned about what mcgahn might tell investigators. the president saying his administration does everything by the book. and breaking overnight, a jury has sentenced a former police officer in the dallas area to 15 years in prison for the murder of an unarmed black teenager. roy oliver fired his weapon into a car full of teens as they were leaving a party last year and killed 15-year-old jordan edwards. oliver claimed he was protecting his partner, but video of the incident contradicted his statements, and even his partner testified that he never felt threatened. look at the reaction. jordan's family calling the sentence too short but said it will help them find closure. oliver's lawyers plan to appeal the sentence. there's growing outrage in

new mexico over the release of three people linked to a desert compound where a boy was found dead and nearly a dozen other children were living in filth. prosecutors say the suspects are muslim extremists who were training the kids to carry out school shootings. but child neglect charges have now been dropped because prosecutors missed a deadline to hold a hearing that was required by state law. two of the suspects including the father of the boy found dead are now still in jail for the time being. we turn now to the emotional farewell for john mccain continuing today with a memorial service where former vice president joe biden is expected to speak. it comes as we get word that mccain's running mate from 2008 sarah palin has not been invited to his funeral. abc's marci gonzalez is in phoenix where mccain's family has been joined by thousands of people saying their final farewell. >> reporter: a first day of emotional services honoring an american icon. john mccain's sons in their

well, someone may be sleepless in seattle after this pickup was pulled over in nearby tacoma. state troopers did not like what they called the leaning tower of mattresses driving around on the interstate. now, count them up right there. they counted 11 mattresses. the driver got a ticket for not securing the load, and the troopers tweeted out now everyone can sleep soundly tonight. >> good to know. the woman in shackles who was ringing doorbells in a houston suburb has now been found. this video from a neighbor's home security system went viral online leading to an outpouring of concern. police now confirm she is safe after a shooting that involved her boyfriend and a case of domestic violence. dozens of prison workers in two states have required treatment after being exposed to potentially tainted drugs. the workers reported feeling dizzy, lightheaded and nauseous. in pennsylvania ten facilities were affected prompting a statewide lockdown.

and in ohio officers believe the guards, nurses and one inmate at the facility south of columbus were exposed to fentanyl, an opioid that's often smuggled into prisons. federal health officials are warning people not to eat empire kosher chicken products because of a salmonella out break in four states. more than a dozen people have gotten sick in new york, maryland, pennsylvania and virginia. one person has died. if you're looking for work construction may be the field to consider. a new report finds construction companies are now boosting salaries because of a shortage of qualified workers. and in the past year, more than 60% of firms raised pay for hourly workers. some positions can earn as much as six figures including welders and crane operators. so, this headline may not surprise many working parents. the cost of child care is skyrocketing. the average monthly cost of day care in the united states is now $1,385 per child.

police are sharing is from the dashboard of the uber driver. 38-year-old robert westlake who is in the middle of a fare and happens to be a recent police academy graduate legally carrying a sidearm. for reasons he doesn't understand, the driver of this pickup truck who's been tailing him suddenly pulls in front of him. out jumps 34-year-old jason boke who just left this bar in dundee after a fight with his girlfriend. he thinks she's the one getting the ride. but police say she's still at the bar and the young woman in the backseat is a stranger. >> i say something? >> you know i got a pistol. >> reporter: when he threatens the driver with a gun that police never found, the driver shoots the man and he dies. >> he came towards me shouting he's got a pistol. >> this is a justifiable homicide all day long. >> reporter: police sharing these texts to the girlfriend where he promises to find her and beat up her driver. >> here's a message for the hotheads. don't do that stuff.

good people carry guns, and they will shoot you. >> reporter: this stand your ground law has some people in florida outraged. but police say that this case is textbook. prosecutors are reviewing it. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. authorities have charged a georgia woman with pretending to be a dentist for several years, drilling and pulling teeth and even performing surgery despite having no training. krista szewczyk is facing felony charges including practicing without a license, insurance fraud and forging prescriptions. she denies performing the procedures and says that she's a victim of a personal vendetta from the district attorney's office. prosecutors say she's been practicing for at least seven years. >> each one of the victims has different operations that were performed on their mouths. these including teeth extraction, including crowns placed on, and when those are done incorrectly, they obviously will end with infections and more like having to remove the

tooth completely. >> one of her former patients says he ended up in the emergency room from the swelling after he had two teeth pulled. szewczyk was first accused in 2012. reports say that case was determined to be too much of a conflict of interest to pursue charges because her husband was a sheriff's deputy. in sports the latest edition of tennis' sister act is all set. venus and serena williams will meet tomorrow in the third round of the u.s. open. both took their second round matches in straight sets. this is their first meeting since last year's australian open, when, remember, a pregnant serena beat venus. the u.s. open officials have now apologized for what is being called a sexist decision. this week alize cornet realized her shirt was on backwards after a heat break tuesday, so you see she took it off and turned around on the court and put it back on. for that she got a code violation. a number of men had their shirts off in the heat but they were not disciplined. cornet says she's ready to move

something in the south bay with chp. a couple moments ago a sig alert issued for 680 and al laan rock. we are working on getting this confirmed. it was there and then disappeared from the board. i'm hoping abc 7 news reporter mccann so mccann -- matt keller can sort this out for us. >> good morning. you can see behind us the chp has blocked off the on ramps to 680 at alan rock avenue. they have the whole freeway closed to berryessa road. that is a big deal for people driving this morning. they are looking for evidence on the freeway as we speak. there was a shooting earlier. an officer told me they first got the call fromt 30 a.m. a man told investigators he was driving in his honda accord between mckey and berryessa when someone shot at him.

the man was hit and able to drof off 680 to the 7-eleven parking lot. multiple bullet holes were found. the man was taken to the hospital to be treated. no word on his condition but he was talking. the chp expects northbound 680 to be closed from alan rock to berryessa road for about 30 to 40 minutes. hopefully by 5:00 a.m. it will all be reopened. reporting live here in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. and more problems for bart this morning, officers found a young man dead inside a bathroom surrounded by drug paraphernalia at the bay fair station in san leandro. the discovery was made just tr not stion pic activity. few details are known about the man although they think he's likely in his 20s or 30s. bart has been dealing with ongoing problem of people using drugs at stations on trains and
