>> abc 7 news confirmed new details about a gun that went off inside a classroom at balboa high school. >> the student who brought the gun ran away and that no students were shot. >> sky 7 was overhead as police prepared to enter that school. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs is live at balboa high school with the information we have just confirmed. katie? >> reporter: dion, within the last hour we've learned the student that was injured today is going to be okay. she was not shot. we've also learned more about the student who brought that gun to school. he's said to be a 14-year-old freshman, and that the gun may have accidentally discharged from his backpack. >> we hear a loud bang, look over, there's a whole in a chair, something on the ground, then the teacher gets up, comes over. she then calls security and everyone comes in, and then we just go into our next class tlockdown. >> reporter: per police sources, the student ran out of the classroom, showing him handing

something over to students. police detained those students and they're the ones seen in sky 7 and ground video from outside the school. they then handed the gun over to police. the student who brought the gun to school managed the run away from campus. sources say his mother took him to the bay view station this afternoon to turn himself in. the lockdown lasted less than two hours. during that time police scoured the area and parents urgently texted and called students to get information. >> i'm among the ranks of parents outside my child's school not knowing what's happening or what's happening to these kids or whether they're safe. it's pretty crappy. >> some panicked moments for many parents out here tonight. the students were given the all clear around 1:00, and that's when they were reunited with parents. the lockdown clear at balboa high school and those other nearby schools. live in san francisco, katie utehs, abc 7 news.

is live for us with more on this story. chris? >> reporter: dion, school administrators spent much of the day meeting with parents about the alleged incident that caught so many people off guard. the teacher has posted bail, but will not be returning to the classroom. community members were stunned learning about the allegations against the teacher, charles sew was taken into custody wednesday afternoon at the school by the san jose police merge unit in connection with a road rage incident that turned into a strong arm robbery. when officers went to his classroom, they found a loaded handgun in his bag. >> at this time i can tell you we don't have any indication that the teacher was planning any type of an assault on studentsdent happened at this parking garage in downtown san jose back in february. police say sew followed a driver into the structure, got out of

his car, battered the victim and stole his cell phone. investigators investigated the case for months. up until the arrest, it would have made sense for him to pass a standard background and fingerprints check, assuming he previously had a clear record. district officials say sew was cleared on august 17th, prior to starting his new teaching job. >> a lot of parents have questions. and so any chance that we have to answer those questions, or assuage their concerns, we will do that. >> reporter: last year sew was a substitute teacher in palo alto and spent time as a student teacher in the san jose unified school district before that. according to his linkedin profile he was a public affairs officer for the army reserves. >> this is an open, ongoing investigation. if anyone has any information about this crime or any other crime, we want to hear from you. >> reporter: the district attorney's office is now reviewing the case. sew is expected to make his first court appearance in late

let's go back now to the breaking news we told you about at the top of the hour, a big rig crashed this afternoon on adobe road in petaluma starting a fire. wayne freedman is live near the

scene with the latest. >> reporter: it looks like a big fire for a quite a while. i'm going to step out of the frame as we show you the scene now on adobe road. this is unincorporated sonoma county, east of petaluma. let's begin with video from sky 7 shot about one hour ago when this happened. it shows the remains of a semi tractor trailer, the melted remains, to be more accurate, for reasons unknown the driver lost control, it plunged down a steep embankment, he hit telephone poles which brought down power lines. the crews were on it in a hurry. as it turns out, luckily, cal fire crews were working just down the road. at one point there were 20-foot flames coming off the big rig. they were climbing the power poles making it even more complicated. it took several minutes for pg&e to cut the power for those lines. did the wind change direction? because this is blowing this way.

>> there wasn't a lot of wind on it so it started burning directly down this way and it hit the foliage and the gully here. that slowed it down on that side of the fire. >> reporter: if this happened another day when it was drier? >> yeah, would have been a different factor. >> reporter: to put it another way, lucky all around. adobe round where i'm standing right now just opened again a few moments ago. the best news of all, the driver in this accident who was behind the wheel of that big rig, not injured. he didn't need medical attention. but he did not say what happened or what went wrong. all things considered, it could have been a lot worse here. live in sonoma county, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> miracle the driver is okay, wayne, thank you. unansh rdots two years since a were fired in downtown oakland. two men were killed. one was trying to defend his girlfriend. the other was hit by a stray bullet.

and they deserve closure. >> but the suspects were amongst this group. >> reporter: this video released by oakland police captures the panic in the crowd as gunshots are fired, investigators believe from multiple gunmen on the night of august 14th, 2016. it happened during a party outside prime development gallery on 15th street. when the gunfire stopped, 20-year-old craig fletcher cook and 22-year-old artist junior were both dead. >> these two individuals come off the block. >> reporter: now police are asking for the public's help in identifying two men captured on surveillance footage seconds after the shooting. a sketch artist came up with likenesses of the two men, the one on the left in the video is believed to be this man. the one on the right, this man. >> there were a lot of people there, there are a lot of rumors going around. >> reporter: fletcher cook's foster mother made a public plea for someone in a very large crowd to come forward. >> his picture was taken two weeks before he died at a

"7 on your side's" michael finney is here with that. >> it's really tough. you've got to make rent and save for retirement. wow. we talked with several people here, some say they have very specific goals about retirement. others saving is something they plan and hope to do, but just haven't done much about it yet. however, more people across the country are making it a priority. . are you adding more money to your retirement account? >> not as much as i should be. there's been a little bit here and there, but not at the moment. >> the answer is yes, you're part of a trend. according to a new bank rate survey, more people are saving more money this year than in 2017. in fact, this is a highest rate of increased retirement savings in the survey's history, 28% of employed americans who were surveyed say they're saving more now than last year. >> pretty much since i started working, i've been putting money away into a roth ira and then
