prison for impersonating a doctor. >> he may be trading in the fake lab coat of his for prison scrubs. will carr has the details. >> reporter: this 23-year-old pretending to be a doctor fooled security at the children's hospital orange county, telling them he lost his i.d., even gaining access to restricted floors. he snuck in at least seven times between april and june and alledgedly gave advice to a patient with a growth growing on his neck. he claims he did not interact with patients but after he tried to get access to the mental health unit doctors called police. >> he was wearing a stethoscope. >> reporter: he looked like a doctor. >> absolutely. >> reporter: this eerily similar to a case in 2011, matthew shy. he posed as a physician's assistant for a month. >> even had the terminology.

>> reporter: he faces 11 years behind bars if convicted. it's possible he could have interacted with other patients. they're asking for anybody who had contact with him to come forward. will carr, abc news. now we're going to talk about a couple that we mentioned from suburban philadelphia that had until this afternoon to turn over what's left of the money they collected for a homeless man. >> this is out of the philadelphia area. you may recall john bobbitt. he filed a lawsuit claiming he has yet to receive most of the $400,000 that the couple raised through a gofundme campaign. mark demeco and katie mcclure made headlines after they vowed to help bobbitt after he gave her $20 after she ran out of gas. >> but he claims they spent more

than half of the money they raised for him on themselves. their attorney denies that accusation. >> they have said they'll open up the books. what more can they do? >> bobbitt claims he's received only $75,000 of the $400,000. the couple claims he used some of the money on drugs and stole from them. but a judge thursday ordered the couple to hand over the rest of the cash. when we come back, a record-setting video on youtube. and elton john bursts out a tune like never before. trump's secret weapon. publishing mogul, david pecker, whose supermarket tabloids like the national enquirer. tore into stories. >> this was a magazine that frankly, in many respects should be very respected. >> reporter: sources say pecker told investigators he also worked with michael cohen to buy and bury the stories of women claiming affairs with the billionaire and that trump knew about it. one of those women, former playboy playmate karen mcdougal. >> there were real feelings between the two of us. >> reporter: trump has denied the affair. but there is news the enquirer had a lot more dirt on him than just the mcdougal story. the tabloid had been collecting information on the president since the '80s and during the campaign trump and cohen wanted to buy it all themselves.

just weeks before the election cohen secretly recorded a conversation with trump and the two men seemed to discuss buying the inquirer's trump files from david pecker. >> i need to open up a company for the transfer of all that info regarding our friend david. >> reporter: they sound worried the information could fall into the wrong hands if pecker were to leave the enquirer or worse. >> it's all that stuff. you never know where -- >> reporter: the deal never went through. cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations. >> pecker has been granted immunity and president trump continues to insist he's done nothing wrong. kyra still lphillips, abc news. president trump's canceling next year's pay raises for civilian federal workers unless congress reaches a budget deal he accepts.

he's invoked his emergency authority, saying he needs to hold down the growth in federal spending. more than 2 million government workers are supposed to receive a 2.1% pay increase on january 1st. summer vacation has been extended for more than 75,000 students in washington state. teachers in seven school districts in the southern part of the state are on strike demanding higher pay and even more may walk out soon. in seattle, teachers have authorized their union to call a strike unless they get a new contract. the final weekend of summer kicks off today and tens of millions of people have big travel plans. >> let's check in with julia weiden for the forecast. >> we're keeping an eye across missouri for potential for thunderstorms that could cause flash flooding. meanwhile in the tropics, watching a wave that's bringing soaking downpours.

this is the aftermath of a roof collapse at a 16th century church in the heart of rome. it's located on the edge of the roman forum, one of their top tourist sites. thankfully, it was closed at the time, but they sent in sniffer dogs to make sure no one was trapped beneath the rubble. the church has only been used to celebrate weddings. get this, it was built in 1598. >> it does appear it was a beautiful church. heather locklear faces new charges stemming from her alleged attacks on police officers. she's accused of hitting officers who arrived at her home for a disturbance in june. she was already facing charges for allegedly kicking police at her home in february. she faces eight years in prison if convicted on all of those counts. and brad pitt is getting personally involved in problems his foundation built. homes built by the foundation

have major electrical and plumbing problems. some residents have complained of headaches and other illnesses. and now we turn to a landmark case. it centers on the issue of race and admissions. >> it pits asian-american students against harvard university. the justice department is weighing in and so is brad mielke. >> we've seen several recent cases where white students say they're not getting into colleges because of reverse discrimination. we're not used to seeing that argument from minority groups, and right now the justice department is siding with a group of asian-american students who are saying that the reason they didn't get into harvard is because there were too many qualified asian students. an editor with inside higher education says race was definitely factored in here. the question is how much. >> the students are saying they were denied admission because they're asian-american, that

harvard favors other students over asian students, like black and latino americans. harvard says that it isn't on a formula of grades and test scores, but on the basis of what they call holistic admissions where everyone is looked at for a range of qualities. the students have since found out that on average they have higher s.a.t. scores and grades than do some of the students who are admitted. but then harvard says it's not because you're asian, it's because they have, in fact, favored alumni children and athletes. >> this could go all the way to the supreme court. and a lot of colleges are backing up harvard here. this case could affect a lot of schools around the country. you can hear more about race and admissions on "start here" later this morning. check it out on apple podcast or your favorite podcasting app. >> definitely is an unusual

all of that. >> reporter: a horrific accident triggering a desperate race against time on a new mexico highway to save the injured. officials say a bus with 48 people on board and a tractor-trailer appear to have collided along interstate 40. >> a semi truck was traveling eastbound on i-40 when it blew out a tire. the semi truck lost control, crossed over the center median. the truck and the bus collided head on. >> reporter: the front of that bus completely sheared off, parts of it in pieces. next to it the tractor-trailer also torn apart. its cab upside down. a former volunteer firefighter driving by the scene jumping into action. >> i saw a lot of people lying on the ground and saw how crushed the bus was and just saw a lot of chaos and devastation. >> reporter: rescue workers using ladders to get inside the bus looking for any injured passengers. more than 40 people rushed to nearby hospitals. the ntsb launching a go team to

investigate. the interstate temporarily shut down. traffic backed up as far as the eye can see. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> a ntsb team is expected there later on this morning. turning now to neighboring arizona. where there were some tributes for john mccain, and they do continue today after he was eulogized as a true hero. the casket arriving at joint base andrews last night this suburban d.c. the defense secretary, several senators, mccain's staff were all there as the military plane touched down and today mccain will lie in state at the u.s. capitol where he served more than 35 years, giving the public another opportunity to say good-bye to him. here's elizabeth hur. >> reporter: senator mccain

they were about to interview a woman with a credible rape allegation when he was told to stand down. he says those orders came from the highest levels of nbc. it was unethical and a massive breach of journalistic integrity. in response, nbc news says at the time the story wasn't ready for broadcast because none of the alleged victims were ready to go on the record. the allegation that it tried to outright kill the story, they say is a lie. a system could grow into a hurricane by monday. >> for more on the weather, let's go to accuweather's julia weiden. >> we are watching for severe storms across the north central region as a cold front drops its

way through. we're watching potential for high gusting winds and heavy downpours, possibly even producing tornados. now meanwhile, in the tropics, we see a wave here that's bringing intense rain to the region. this will press on into the southwestern u.s. as we head into early next week. for labor day we are watching storms across florida and the gulf coastal region. a look elsewhere around the country, and we are expecting hot and humid conditions for the northeast on labor day. maggie, kendis? >> well, julia, thank you. labor day is around the corner. many are wondering about gas prices. the news headline is that they're ticking up in time for millions to hit the road this weekend. the national average is $2.84 a gallon, 48 cents more than this time last year. it's also the most expensive price on labor day weekend in four years. analysts don't expect prices to drop significantly anytime soon.

there's another big controversy at the u.s. open. this time involving an alleged pep talk. >> it happened during the second round. the australian was trailing when he appeared to get a little cheering from the umpire. he got a pat on the back. he told him this is not you and urged him to try harder. >> he went on to win the match, sparking accusations that the umpire gave him an unfair advantage. that's weird. >> he said he liked me. i don't know if that's encouragement. but he's telling me, this isn't a good look. i know what i was doing out there wasn't good. >> actually, what he was doing, if you saw that sound bite right there, he was telling him, i don't know about the eyebrows and that little shave in the middle. >> you just don't look good

things that i assume he believed in, but with that being said, i respect his service to the country. >> in that interview, the president went on to deny that he missed an opportunity to unite the country after mccain's death. he also refused to comment when asked if mccain would have made a better president than barack obama. at least seven people have now died after a bus crash on a busy highway in new mexico. authorities believe a tractor-trailer lost control after blowing a tire and slamming into the bus head on. many of the injured passengers remain in critical condition. the bus was heading from albuquerque to phoenix. we turn to a devastating explosion at a water plant in chicago. ten workers were injured when the concrete roof came crashing down. firefighters had to go to extraordinary lengths to rescue them from the rubble.alex u >> reporter: just before 11:00 a.m., an explosion reported at this water purification plant in chicago. a huge portion of the roof

collapsing. ten employees buried in the rubble. >> we got a total collapse of the structure. >> reporter: the collapse, authorities suspect, triggered by a buildup of methane gas, a massive response from emergency teams working to free those inside. teams quickly able to rescue eight employees. 20 minutes after arriving, crews rescue another employee. on a stretcher, he's rushed to medics. but one man remains trapped. his leg fractured and dangerously pinned underneath all that debris, unable to move. >> concrete roof, concrete i-beams. >> reporter: some 75 rescuers working, some with their ears pressed to the rubble until

finally they are able to reach the remaining employee. >> we tunneled in about 40 six feet below the collapse. we had to remove some concrete, cut some concrete. we sent two paramedics down. >> reporter: at one point, first responders fearing they may have to amputate his leg, but after two stressful hours, that man finally brought out alive. authorities were actually able to get two medics inside that space where the employee was trapped and able to give him an iv and prevent him from going into shock. alex perez, abc news, chicago. a california man is charged with threatening to kill reporters at the "boston globe" because of their criticism of president trump. 68-year-old robert jayne is accused of calling the newsroom more than a dozen times all just in august. allegedly calling the paper the enemy of the people. president trump has often used that phrase to describe journalists. federal agents seized more than 20 guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from his home. he could face up to five years

>> he may be trading in the fake lab coat of his for prison scrubs. will carr has the details. >> reporter: this 23-year-old pretending to be a doctor fooled security at the children's hospital orange county, telling them he lost his i.d., even gaining access to restricted floors. he snuck in at least seven times between april and june and alledgedly gave advice to a patient with a growth growing on his neck. he claims he did not interact with patients but after he tried to get access to the mental health unit doctors called police. >> he was wearing a stethoscope. >> reporter: he looked like a doctor. >> absolutely. >> reporter: this eerily similar to a case in 2011, matthew shide. he posed as a physician's assistant for a month. >> even had the terminology.

>> reporter: he faces 11 years behind bars if convicted. it's possible he could have interacted with other patients. they're asking for anybody who had contact with him to come forward. will carr, abc news. now we're going to talk about a couple that we mentioned from suburban philadelphia that had until this afternoon to turn over what's left of the money they collected for a homeless man. >> this is out of the philadelphia area. you may recall john bobbitt. he filed a lawsuit claiming he has yet to receive most of the $400,000 that the couple raised through a gofundme campaign. mark demeco and katie mcclure made headlines after they vowed to help bobbitt after he gave her $20 after she ran out of gas.
