charges. the third person has not been found. someone jogging on the ace train track in san jose was hit and killed today. the transit agency says the person was hit near guadalupe river trail in the elviso neighborhood. passengers on the train were put on shuttle buses. another ace train was delayed for around two hours because shuttles could not reach the area where the train had been stopped. next month federal officials will meet to determine what likely caused a scarry near miss at sfo last year. it will be held on the 25th in washington. the air canada jet nearly landed on several other jets in july of 2017. it's coming for the landing, it was right on top of that plane. investigators believe it came within ten feet of that plane there. officials said the air canada flight was clear to the land on a runway but instead lined up on a taxiway. the flight aborted after being

classrooms today about what happened yesterday and supporting the kids in any way that they can. in san francisco, abc news ab. a vote will provide more than $1 billion to reduce wildfire risks across the state. the proposal would fund grants to fire departments, cities, counties, and nonprofit organizations to thin brush and cut fuel breaks. if a plan is approved, cal fire, the state's primary fire-fighting agency, stands to receive $200 million which will be distributed over the next six years. the money comes from the state's gas-reduction fund that oil companies and factories pay into in order to release greenhouse gases. in addition to northern california, there are hundreds of fires burning in british columbia. and that is bringing smoke to the bay area. here's a live look. >> haze there. the bay area air-quality management district has issued a smoke advisory through monday. let's get over to spencer

vehicle into a sign post after running over a spike strip. he was trying to avoid arrest during a sting. he thought he was communicating with a 15-year-old girl over the internet. instead he was communicating with a vacaville police officer. an oakland woman relocating to take a new job is going through quite the nightmare. a u-haul truck containing most of her belongings was stolen from in front of her business the night before the move. later the truck was found, but her stuff is gone. abc7 has more near the u-haul dealer with more. >> reporter: we hear about these, what, every few weeks, somebody moving in or out of the bay area, has belongings stolen out of a u-haul or other type of moving van. in this case, it wasn't only her furniture, it was the tools of her trade.

jennifer teaches guitar in a studio near lake merit. a month ago she landed a gig lecturing at humboldt state university. august 10th she rented a u-haul like this to move the next day. >> i loaded up 11 instrument e tthe -- instruments, bed, bedding, l.a. >> reporter: the next day it was gone. thieves got away with i gotors, banjos, a bass, clothes, and textbooks. >> the instruments are irreplaceable. three of them were 100 years old. they were from my family. they don't have a high monetary value, but they had an enormous sentimental value. >> reporter: when police found the truck, they found something left behind. a toolbox filled with kitchen tools. including a cake decorating tool jennifer was told could be used to defeat the ignition system and allow the truck to start. we contacted u-haul to see how common these sorts of thefts are. in a written response, the company said it does not talk

publicly about vehicle theft and went on to say "we do employ a robust investigations unit that works closely with law enforcement." they further advised renter ee park in well-lit areas within view of security cameras, lock doors and place secure locks on the rear doors of trucks and trailers. jennifer says she did take precautions, and she will continue to bug u-haul about putting alarms and better anti-theft devices on their trucks. >> yes, i suffered this huge loss, but if i could just save one person or even hundreds from experiencing what i experienced, then i could be helping them. >> reporter: police don't have any suspects yet in this theft case. but if there's one silver lining that comes out of this, a couple of local guitar makers have offered to make jennifer a custom guitar to take to her new job. live in oakland, eric thomas ing a sious head-on trash

in tuolumne county on a man in new zealand driving on the wrong side of the worldwide. 48-year-old james sayer was driving on highway 120 in sonora when he collided with a driver. according to a report in "the chronicle," sayer told officers that he mistakenly entered the wrong lane because he is used to driving on the other side of the road in his country. four people were involved in the crash. all had to be airlift to the hospital. a world-renowned south bay restaurant damaged by fire is set it -- set to reopen. "the san jose mercury news" reports that manresa will reopen on the 19th. it's been closed since july 16th when an overnight fire damaged the attic and exterior wall. it was the second fire in four years at the restaurant, one of just 13 in the country with three michelin stars. university of california researchers thinks they may have found a way to make cattle more climate friendly, feed them

here are the stories making headlines -- b.a.r.t. has scaled back its police presence that started after several violent incidents including a murder. for the last three weeks, b.a.r.t. has had 10 to 20 officers riding trains all working overtime. now there are just four to ten officers. b.a.r.t. is looking to hire but having a hard time filling the vacancies. we reported that a san francisco high school student who discharged a gun at school faces eight felonies. coming up at 5:00, the next step in the investigation that requires help from federal agents. abc7 tweeted about san francisco residents who believe two people are using the caviar food delivery app as cover to

get inside buildings and steal packages. coming up at 5:00, we talk with the fed-up residents and get a response from caviar. a flight from oakland initial was turned around -- oakland international was turned around because of a mistaken photo share. 15 passengers got a photo that they thought was a threat. let me warn you, this contains a disturbing photo. it turns out it wasn't real. abc7's melanie woodrow is live at oakland national airport with the story and the picture. >> reporter: a 15-year-old on the flight was attempting to show her mom how toize hurt me to iphone. in the process she -- to use her new iphone. in the process she airdropped a mock crime photo from her science class, and 15 others got it alerting the crew. hawaiian airlines flight 23 was supposed to take off at 7:00 a.m. but was delayed nearly an hour and a half after 15 passengers received this picture

of a mob crime scene with a nylon beanbag-type mannequin. >> passengers viewed the picture, believed it was threatening. alerted the pilot. >> reporter: the airline called the couple in to investigate the potential threat. >> we quickly deciphered that this incident was a 15-year-old girl that was trying to airdrop a mock crime scene photo to her mother. >> reporter: the 15-year-old was using airdrop via bluetooth. sergeant ray kelly says based on her phone settings, people within range of her phone had the option of accepting and viewing the photo, as well. >> the young girl was very embarrassed. she actually was upset. we explained she was not in trouble. there was no crime committed. >> reporter: it was the pilot's decision to return to the gate after the plane had begun taxiing. >> it doesn't look real, but certainly i understand the concern on the plane. >> i think it's good to look objectively and try to figure things out before jumping to

conclusions. >> reporter: hawaiian airlines tells abc7 in order to resume the flight and minimize inconvenience, the teenager and family were rebooked on a later flight while the incident was investigated. the other passengers went on to hawaii following the nearly hour and a half delay. the sheriff's office says the mom and daughter will fly to hawaii saturday. >> she has a good heart and didn't want to inconvenience all those people. very remorseful. >> reporter: the sheriff's spoek spokesperson said this was a learning experience for everyone involved, and the system worked as it should -- with passengers playing their part, alerting the flight staff when they were concerned. live at oakland international airport, abc7 news. the death toll is rising after that horrifying crash between a greyhound bus and a tractor-trailer in new mexico. investigators say the truck crossed the median, crashing head on into the bus packed with passengers. state police now say at least eight people were killed.

abc's marci gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: as many as 30 victims from that bus cameras were still hospitalized overnight -- bus crash were still hospitalized overnight, airlifted to the hospital from the devastating scene. the greyhound bus was traveling from here in albuquerque phoenix. it was on senate 40 when a semi-truck blew a tire, we're told, and then swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting that bus head on. the front of the greyhound just sheared off. we're told some of the passengers, some of the 48 people who were on board, were thrown from that bus. people who happened to be driving past pulled over, immediately rushing over to the scene trying to help as much as they could before first responders arrived. the ntsb is at the scene investigating. we're told greyhound is investigating, as well. they say they are fully cooperating with the investigation. marci gonzalez, abc news,

albuquerque. seeing a police chase through the streets of los angeles is not unusual. but it is when the chase is on foot and the suspect is naked. the pursuit began after the man abandoned a suspected stolen truck on a freeway in boyle heights. that was about dawn today. he sprinted along dirt foot paths through a homeless encampment and scaled the fence without a stitch on. he disappeared into a hilly wooded area behind houses. officers did finally catch up with him. it is not clear yet why in guy didn't have any clothes on. a woman shot and killed by los angeles sheriff's deputies yesterday has been identified as 49-year-old vanessa marquez. a former actress known for her roles on the show "e.r." and the film "stand and deliver." the shooting happened after officers went to her south pasadena home to perform a welfare check. investigators say first responders were at the home for an hour and a half when marquez became uncooperative and pulled a gun, prompting an officer to open fire in response. >> she was suffering from some

streets. abc7 has more on this month's abc7 star. >> reporter: if you've walked through the tenderloin in san francisco, you know about the homelessness and the open drug use that at times can make your heart break. >> how was school? >> reporter: every afternoon during the school year, there's a temporary transformation led by kate robinson of the tenderloin community benefit district. >> we meet people, we talk to people. we involve everybody in this process. and just that alone makes everyone feel safer. >> reporter: ten years ago, a group of moms in the neighborhood came together with the goal of making the streets safer for kidsalo and from school robinson got wind of the effort that would eventually become known as safe passage and decided to help out. recently, we walked the tenderloin together where she explained how volunteers sweep the streets before hundreds of students walk through. >> the solutions for the tenderloin are going to come from the tenderloin. and this program is proof of that. >> reporter: the program, funded entirely by grants and private
