giving the all clear. the name of the suspected student is written and his clothing description given as a red hoodie. >> i work here too. so it was okay. the staff was great. >> the student ran off campus, but police sources say his mother turned him in at the bayview station. now he faces eight felony charges. >> including possession of a firearm on campus, possession of live ammunition and negligent discharge. >> the atf is helping san francisco police determine where the gun came from. the other three students detained appear to have been involved only after the gunshot happened. >> now the other three students who were involved were released to their parents pending further investigation. >> we asked san francisco unified school district what discipline the student might be facing. they sent me the district's policy. let me read to it you directly. immediate suspension and expulsion are mandatory for possession of a gun. katie utehs, abc 7 news.

>> thank you. a california couple accused of starving, shackling and beating their 13 children plead got knot guilty in court today. david and louise turpin face 88 charges, including torture and false imprisonment. deputies raided their riverside county home in january after their 17-year-old daughter escaped and called for help. david turpin is also accused of perjury. the d.a. says he signed paperwork to home school his children but failed to do. so turpin's attorney asked for the perjury charge to be tried simply. >> going to trial on 41 counts is difficult enough. going to trial on 49 counts is more difficult and more prejudicial. so we attempted to limit the prejudice to our client by asking that those be severed out. >> the judge rejected the request. the couple's next court date is in october. protesters blocked traffic today in front of san francisco's hall of justice. some even stood right in front of a muni bus trying to drive

down bryant street. the bus then reversed down the one-way street. protesters gathered at the hall of justice every friday to protest police shootings. some were carrying wanted signs with district attorney george gascon's face on them. firefighters have contained a 25-acre grass fire near the tesoro refinery in martinez. sky seven was over the fire after it was reported around 2:15. it took about two hours to put the fire out. no one was hurt, and work at the refinery was not interrupted. taking a live look outside across the bay area now, we're in the first of a string of days with an air quality advisory. conditions are not quite bad enough to issue a spare the air alert, as you can probably tell, but nearby wildfires are blowing enough smoke into our skies to warrant advisory from monday. let's find out more about this, abc 7 news weather anchor spencer christian joins us with a look at your weekend forecast. >> okay, kristen, i'm happy to say we don't expect air quality to be poor, but it will be in

some state of decline. so here's a look. you can see the haze in the air flight. for tomorrow, we expect moderate air quality in the north bay, central, bay and coast. inland east bay, good quality tomorrow in the south central and in santa clara valley. then for remaining two days of four-day period covered by this air quality advisory, we'll have only moderate air quality. what is helping, though, the brisk wind. the ground wind is so strong right now, it's helping to mix out some of the smoke so it doesn't accumulate to the point where we'll have to have a spare the air alert. at least that's the way it looks right now. dan? >> spencer, thanks very much. the toughest net neutrality laws in the nation are headed for governor brown's desk. a bill that got final passage today in the state senate would prevent internet service providers from blocking or slowing down websites or charging for faster speeds. but unlike previous laws, this bill would limit data plans and allow companies breaking the rules to be prosecuted. if the bill passes, it would

likely face legal challenges after the fcc rolled back federal net neutrality laws next year. we'll see what the governor does with this legislation. a nonprofit that runs six california hospitals has filed for bankruptcy. verity health has four hospitals in the bay area, and now many are wondering how much longer they'll stay open. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen son the story. >> outrage tonight over the announcement that verity health has declared bankruptcy. >> you can't help but be nervous. we went down this road once before. >> the company operates four hospitals in the bay, including seton medical center, in moss beach, o'connor hospital in south bay and st. louis hospital in gilroy. >> we figure now we got bailout, we got this billionaire and he is turning things around. >> the hospitals were originally part of the not for profit daughters of charity health system which was taken over by blue mountain capital in 2015 before billionaire patrick sun

in terms of what do you want to do to turn these into cancer centers and really be on the forefront of innovation and to be a leader. it's really a slap in the face. >> the future of verity now in question. chris nguyen, abc 7 news. to developing news, the death toll from yesterday's devastating head-on crash between a greyhound bus and a big rig in new mexico stands at eight. investigators say the truck traveling on interstate 40 blew a tire, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the bus. at least 40 people were transported to nearby hospitals. today we've learned a pregnant woman on the bus delivered twins at a hospital just after the accident. mom is okay, but the twins are in the neonatal intensive unit at the university of new mexico hospital. police arrested a man suspected of stabbing another bart rider. they took jamar coleman into custody. he is accused of stabbing the other rider on the train while it sat at the macarthur station saturday.

bart police say it was collaborative effort tracking him down, based on the surveillance video we were able to catch an image of the suspect. well put that out to the media and over police departments and the oakland police department took the suspect into custody just yesterday. >> the victim was slashed on the thumb, creating a one-inch gash on his hand. no one else was hurt. u-haul thieves have struck again. this time an oakland music teacher moving to take a new job had the truck and all her belongings stolen from right in front of her business. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas has her story. >> jennifer trobridge has a ph.d in music from northwestern. she taught in a small studio near lake merritt. but a month ago she landed a new gig lecturing at humbolt university. on august 10th, she rented a u-haul like this one to move the next day. >> so i loaded up 11 musical instruments, my bed, bedding, sofa, lamps. >> she left it parked out front, but the next morning it was

gone. thieves got away with several guitars, a couple of banjos, a bass, clothes and textbooks. >> the instruments are completely irreplaceable. i mean, three of them were 100 years old. they were from my family. >> about ten days after the theft, the truck was found here near the intersection of oc and edloe in hayward. all of her belongings were gone, but the thieves left behind the tools they used to steal the truck. including a cake decorating tool jennifer was told could be used to defeat the ignition and allow the truck to start. we contacted u-haul to see how common these thefts are. it says it does not talk publicly about vehicle thefts. we do employee a robust investigations unit that works closely with law enforcement. they further advise renters to park in well-lit areas within view of security cameras, lock doors to the cab and place secure lox on rear doors and trailers.

a maui-bound flight was brought back to the gate. there was nothing wrong with the plane, it was all because of a picture. 15 passengers received a photo on their phones that they thought was a threat. let me warn you, the photo in question here is disturbing, but it turns out what it shows is not real. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow explains. >> reporter: this mock crime scene photo caused a scare friday. hawaiian airlines flight 23 was supposed to take off at 7:00 a.m., but was delayed nearly an hour and a half after 15 passengers accidentally received this photo while the plane was tax kpig. >> the passengers reviewed that picture, believed that picture was threatening, alerted the flight crew, who in turn notified the pilot. >> it turns out a 15-year-old girl was attempting to air drop the photo of a mannequin and mock crime scene to her mother who was also on the plane. >> this was mom's first day with

an iphone. >> the 15-year-old was using air drop via bluetooth. based on her phone settings, people within range had the option of viewing and accepting as well. >> the young girl was very embarrassed. she actually was upset. we explained to her she was not in trouble there was no crime that was committed here. >> it was ultimately the pilot's decision to return to the gate after the plane had begun taxiing. >> it doesn't look real. but certainly i understand why people alerted the folks on the plane. >> i think it's important to look objectively and try to figure things out before jumping to conclusions. >> hawaiian airlines tells abc 7 news, in order to resume the flight and minimize the inconvenience to our guests, the teenager and the family were rebooked on a later flight while the incident was investigated. the other passengers went on to hawaii following the nearly hour and a half delay. the sheriff's office spokesperson says the mom and daughter will fly to hawaii on saturday. at oakland international airport, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. more aviation news.

first jetblue, now united. checked baggage fees are going up by $5. the first checked bag will cost $30. united announced the increase today. jetblue announced its higher prices earlier this week. package thefts have unfortunately become all too common in parts of the bay area. but the way the crimes are being committed, well, that's changing. abc 7 news anchor dion lim shows us the new way you may not have thought of. >> obviously, there is a pattern, and maybe even a network of people doing this. >> at first glance, what you see in these surveillance images isn't anything we haven't seen before. suspected thieves in san francisco appear to take packages that aren't theirs. >> it happens more often than say in suburbs. >> what's difference this time, how the suspected crooks entered the building. >> the man was nice enough to deliver the food before he came back and took the packages. >> at least two residents say they have ordered food through delivery app caviar. surveillance images show who they believe is the male driver

it is quite windy, looking down at ocean beach. mid level and low level clouds beginning to gather along the coastline. it is still mainly sunny. we'll see some fog near the coast and bay overnight. mild to warm pattern will be with us through labor day weekend with the warming peaking on sunday and monday. we'll have warmest temperatures. certainly in our inland areas. forecast animation starting at 7:00 this evening shows a few more patches of low clouds developing along the coastline, maybe a patch or two will push out over the bay during the overnight hours. generally clear inland and over the bay. at the start of the day tomorrow, 7:00 tomorrow morning, we'll see lingering low clouds near the coast. and they'll mainly burn away, except for a few lingering ones in the afternoon. look for a sunny start to the labor day weekend. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid- to upper 50s. tomorrow's highs will range from mid 60s a the coast. maybe even a couple of upper 60s. we'll see upper 80s in most of our warmer inland locations. and remember, a year ago

in the east bay, the port of oakland has set a new record. july saw the highest percentage of ever using shore power that means they turn off their diesel engines when dock and rely on electricity resulting of course in fewer emissions. 105 of the 135 ships that berthed at the port decided to plug in. that's 78%. state regulators required at least 70% of ships at a port plug. in starting in 2020, that requirement rises to 80%, all in the name of improving air quality. but things are moving in the right direction there. oakland's airport is prepared for a busy weekend. officials anticipate nearly 200,000 passengers from today through monday to move through the terminals. that's an increase of more than 8% from labor day weekend last year. and here is a live look at san francisco international airport. no delays tonight there. around 16.5 million people are expected to fly somewhere. that is a 4% spike from last

now sports from abc 7 news. >> the preseason has come and gaughan, and khalil mack is still not in a raiders uniform as he continues the hold out for a contract extension. but will $135 million over six years jump-start negotiations? that's how much the rams agreed to pay their star defensive end aaron donald. it's the richest deal ever for a defensive player. donald's contract includes an annual salary of $22.5 million and $87 million in guaranteed money. that sets the standard for the league's top defensive players. donald also held out this preseason, but he'll suit up for the ram's season opener, which happens to be against the raiders. mack and his agent have remained mostly quiet in regard to the holdout. but a three-word tweet by mack last night has drawn lots of

attention. mack wrote, quote, i miss it under a highlight of him in a game against miami. quarterback derek carr answered with i miss you. no doubt that's the sentiment of raider nation. well, the giants may have traded andrew mccutchen to the yankees, but the team brass made it clear today they have no issues bringing him back. the giants announced the trade this morning, and they received two prospects in return from new york. but the with the giants lagging in the play-off picture and mccutchen available to become a free agent, it made sense to get something for him now. but team executive vice president brian sabean said he liked what mccutchen brought on and off the field and wouldn't rule out signing him in free agency. mccutchen and the yankees will be across the bay starting monday for a three-game set against the a's. and the a's are bringing cory gearrin back. they sent two relievers to texas for the right-hander. earlier this month with the rangers, he chris davis in the back. yeah, that didn't go over too
