>> announcer: good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, september 2nd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, carolyn, good morning to you. hi, everyone. here's a look at live doppler 7. no absence of fog along the shoreline. we're socked in even in santa cruz. temperatures in the 50s. a sunny day on the way there with a high of 70. it's in the mid-50s downtown, low to mid-60s the has a quality throughout the atmosphere today will be with us due to a north wind. as you look outside here from our exploratorium camera, it's sunny. we've got upper 60s on the way downtown with upper 70s around the bay to near 90 today inland,

carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. developing news out of the south bay. the santa clara county sheriff's office is looking for the person who stabbed a man in his 20s, killing him. it happened just after 1:30 this morning near raymond avenue and west san carlo street in san jose. medics transported the victim but he later died at the hospital. also in the south bay, two suspects have been arrested after santa clara county sheriff's deputies said he led them on a chase, than crashed a stolen u-haul van. [ sirens ] deputies say that van was on stevens creek boulevard in cupertino. it appeared suspicious when they tried to stop. the driver drove off, colliding with a car, trapping the two suspects. both are injured but expected to be okay. the driver of the car does not have serious injuries. deputies believe the suspects

had robbed a gamestop store. they are being treated and will be booked into santa clara county's main jail. along the california/arizona border, at least one person is missing after two private boats collided on the colorado river. officials now say 13 people are injured. here is abc news reporter marci gonzalez. >> reporter: witnesses say one of the boats was speeding on the wrong side of the river and hit that other boat head-on. he describes seeing people thrown into the water as both boats flipped. one boat quickly sank as first responders rushed to the scene. >> two boats hit head on at about 50 miles per hour in the river near the topock restaurant, 12 people in the waerpt, 12 people in the water near pirate cove resort. >> reporter: that search for the injured people was especially challenging because this happened just after sunset, around 8:00 last night, on the colorado river in the mohav mohv

regional park near the border with arizona. the current so strong, rescuers say, they found survivors as much as five miles from the crash scene. one person was airlifted to the hospital with what first responders describe as life-threatening injuries. the san bernardino fire department says the search for the one or two people still missing was suspended overnight but search teams are getting back out there this morning. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. did you feel it? it was moderate, a 3.3 earthquake. it happened in crockett just before 5:30 last night. abc 7 news reporter lilliian ki has the story. >> reporter: in the tiny town of crockett and beyond, just aut everyone tells the same thing. but no one was quite sure what it was. >> i live in a four-plex.

i thought maybe somebody did in. >> we were sitting, having a beverage, we thought that a diesel or something had ran into the building. >> reporter: turned out it was an earthquake, magnitude 3.3. residents say what set this tremblor apart was there was no rumbling, just one big jolt. >> it sounded like a big bang. i didn't think it was an earthquake, because it didn't really roll, it banged. >> reporter: the u.s. geological survey says this was on the southern end of the napa fault. unlike 2014, this latest event was quite small. >> the motion itself was rather short-lived. so it moved briefly and stopped, so it generated more of a pulse. >> reporter: there were no reports of injuries in a j&l market. only a few items got knocked off

a robbery. the collision happened at hyde and ellis streets last night. a jeep struck another car. you can see it landed upside down. no word if anyone was hurt. we have new video this morning of a fire that forced ten people from their homes. san francisco's outer richmond district. this is video from the fire at 48th and cabrillo. some of the residents returned yeterday but only to collect their valuables. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo has the details. >> reporter: this apartment building is far from the home nori and his wife karu have known for the last 45 years. karu was seriously injured and remains hospitalized after she jumped from the third floor to save her own life from the fire. >> she jumped from there, my goodness. >> reporter: he says his wife broke her legs and back and

suffered other injuries. >> i don't know what happened. the fire started here, something r: san francisco fire confirms the cause was accidental, citing an electrical issue. in total, three people were injured and the two officers first on scene suffered smoke inhalation. >> both the officers ran into the building. they were able to kick down doors, rescue at least one person from the building. at that point they got overcome by smoke. >> reporter: the officers also returned saturday, making sure neighbors were okay. a family dog was killed in friday's fire. >> i'm really glad that none of them were home. i mean, it really sucks that the door was there. he meant a lot to them. all they can do is be there for him and his family. >> reporter: there was no timeline for when the ten displaced residents will b amanda del castillo, abc 7 news.

welcome back, everyone, on this sunday morning. the first sunday in september. it's september 2nd. this is a live look from our abc 7 news exploratorium camera at pier 15. upper 60s in san francisco today. hazy sunshine just about everywhere, moderate air quality. warm temps today and tomorrow, labor day. but getting cooler during the week. lisa is along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. some scary moments for passengers on a roller coaster in illinois. the ride at six flags great america was making its initial ascent when it suddenly stopped moving yesterday afternoon. the amusement park saying the coaster's safety sensors halted the ride. everyone was safely evacuated. no one was hurt. park officials say it's unclear

exactly why the ride malfunctioned. it is now closed so they can inspect. berkeley police officers will soon be equipped with narcan to help treat opioid overdoses. officers are receiving training on just how to properly use narcan, which can be administered nasally. the cdc reports 115 americans die every single day from opioid overdoses. narcan can reduce the life-threatening effects of an overdose. the department is expected to start carrying narcan soon. san francisco police already have it. well, if you are a pg&e customer, you may have to pay up if the utility company is found liable in a wildfire. it's all spelled out in a bill that's now on thegovernor's desk. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley looks at what's at stake. >> reporter: the bill passed

both houses friday night. the controversial part of the bill addresses the 2017 california wildfires, including those that burned in the north bay. cal fire investigators determined that 11 of the fires were caused by pg&e. they've turned those cases over to the corresponding d.a.'s offices. pg&e could be on the hook for millions, even billions, of damages. >> we voted to allow pg&e if they're negligent, and if they can't afford today to pay that liability, would pass that cost on to rate payers. before we know what pg&e's liability is, we've already given them a bailout. and that's wrong. >> reporter: after the vote, pg&e issued a statement calling the bill a common sense solution that puts the needs of wildfire victims first and ultimately protects electric customers. the bipartisan bill was designed to keep pg&e from going bankrupt over payouts to fire victims. it puts the california public

utilities commission in charge of deciding when rate payers kick in money. >> they're going to have to do a complete fiscal analysis independent of pg&e, and no money comes from rate payers until pg&e pays the maximum amount they can pay and still remain in business. >> reporter: s.b. 901 also puts money towards streamlining forestry management to expedite the removal of dead trees. the rate payer liability in s.b. 901 only applies applies applies wildfires. 2018 and beyond, liability reverts to pg&e shareholders. i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. a crew on a mission to save the environment is now docked in san francisco bay. abc 7 news was at pier 19 in san francisco where greenpeace's "arctic sun rise" is docked, for jerry brown's global climate

warm up. 57 in san francisco, low 60s in oakland. 62 in san jose. cool 50s from morgan hill and half moon bay. you can see the sun trying to come out at the airport. low 60s in novato where it's kind of smoky. you have the north wind. santa rosa towards cloverdale, lakeport, you have the hazy skies. livermore at 62. the air quality is moderate today and tomorrow. a slight warm-up and that slight shift of our wind allowing for just a little bit more in the way of haze moving into the bay. as we look outside from our roof camera, you can see just a little bit of a breeze there. so some patchy coastal stratus and fog. hazy afternoon sunshine north. warm inland, feeling like summer in parts of the bay again tomorrow for labor day. there's the fog, the absence of it, tonight. and then as we get into your labor day, it is along the coast. we'll call it partly cloudy for

perhaps a beach day tomorrows for -- tomorrow for the holiday. ouds and fog with us each and a sunny afternoon, and the beaches in the mid-60s from half moon bay, pacifica, ocean beach. a little warmer around santa cruz. it's been on the cool side, just 70 there. this afternoon, temperatures up a few degrees in oakland, low to mid-70s for the afternoon game with the mariners, should be a nice day. and the rest of the bay area enjoying temperatures fairly similar to what you've had, 81 in san jose. upper 70s in sunnyvale. peninsula numbers with that sea breeze, low to mid-70s from millbrae to palo alto and los altos. partly to mostly sunny here. 63 in daly city. this is where we get into sort of murky skies from santa rosa

kindness by raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for withheld much of the money. he says he's now back living on the street. abc news reporter adrian banker has the story. >> reporter: it's a story that made you believe in humanity. a homeless veteran stopping to help a stranded motorist on i-95 in philadelphia, using the only men he had left ga gas. the woman, kate mcclure, and her boyfriend set up a gofundme account for johnny bobbitt, raising over $400,000 in donations. >> $1,764. >> that changes my life. >> reporter: i talked to mcclure and bobbitt last year when the story went viral. you're going from zero literally to 300 and some-odd thousand dollars. >> it's like winning the

lottery. >> reporter: but on thursday bobbitt took mcclure and d'amico to court. >> the defendant needed to transfer all the money within 24 hours, by about 3:00 p.m. on friday afternoon. >> reporter: according to bobbitt's attorneys, the funds have still not been transferred. bobbitt spoke exclusively to our philadelphia station. >> i didn't want to get a lawyer or anything because i didn't want to appear ungrateful. >> reporter: bobbitt's attorneys say he received some money. the couple let bobbitt live on their property. kate mcclure and mark d'amico did at various times give johnny some cash. >> certainly nowhere near the $403,000 that was raised for him. >> reporter: mcclure and d'amico's attorney argues they gave him closer to $200,000. the couple says they held on to the rest out of fear he would spend the money on drugs.

in an interview with "the philadelphia inquirer," bobbitt did admit to struggling with drug addiction in the past. if you're riding b.a.r.t. in the east bay today, you could be facing possible delays. track repair work continues. abc 7 news was at 19th street station in oakland where a long line of commuters waited for a bus bridge yesterday. track repairs are happening between that b.a.r.t. station and the west oakland station. riders say it's as busy as the last two weekend closures. >> there's a university of north carolina versus cal football game. so that's going to, wow, put -- and then the mets are in town. i don't know. i guess there's no good time to do it. >> b.a.r.t. has set aside another weekend, september 22nd, in case more work is necessary. right now police are looking for a man who attacked an agent at the macarthur b.a.r.t.

station late friday. we're told the suspect sucker punched the agent in the face. b.a.r.t. police are going through surveillance video looking for leads. >> he was north on telegraph. ethiopian, all dark clothing, 5'8", medium build. >> copy. what's the weapon? >> unknown. >> and that attack is coming just after we learned b.a.r.. police are cutting back their patrols. officers had been putting in overtime and working six days a week, 12 hours a day, this following the stabbing death of nia wilson. a peaceful end to a potentially dangerous situation in san mateo. abc 7 news was at first avenue near south clairemont street where police were responding to a domestic disturbance call yesterday. police located a man with a gun

barricaded in a vehicle. you see the heavily armed officers closing off the area as members of the crisis negotiation team contacted him. it took about an hour and a half. officials eventually calmed the man down and took him into custody. mollie tibbetts' mother has written an op-ed asking people to live her out of the immigration debate. the man accused of killing mollie is an undocumented immigrant. her father says she would not approve of using her death to advance racist views. he appeals for decency saying, at her eulogy i said mollie is nobody's victim nor is she a pawn in others' debate. she may not be able to speak for herself but i can and will. please leave us out of your debate. allow us to grieve in privacy and with dignity.

a warning this morning about dui checkpoints this holiday weekend. at least three drivers have been arrested in novato. one checkpoint on san marin drive saw 2,000 cars friday night. chp officers arrested three people on suspicion of dui. nine drivers were arrested for not having a license or driving on a revoked license. some bay area teenagers got a firsthand lesson on the dangers of drinking and driving. chp, the insurance industry, and ford teamed up for a hands-on demonstration. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas has the story. >> reporter: schuyler and julia, both seniors at north gate high school, aren't used to driving with movement-restricting braces on theires a vision-blurring goggles over their eyes. >> i feel like every step i take, i could fall. it's crazy. >> reporter: it's designed to show teenagers how drugs and

alcohol affect perception and fine motor skills. >> these are the hundred deadliest days, the days between memorial day and labor day, when we have more teen drivers on the road and as a result see more accidents and fatalities. >> reporter: like this accident in walnut creek in which two antioch teens died. the 18-year-old driver was arrested for dui. here the teens got behind the wheel with simulated impairment and plenty of adult supervision and attempted to avoid the cones on an an obstacle course. it did not go well. >> the vision was the worst part, definitely. i had a headache after putting these on just for that drive, it's nauseating because your vision is completely shifted. your perception is totally off. >> reporter: to see if that was true, we put a more experienced driver behind the wheel. >> here we go. this is embarrassing. >> reporter: i probably hit more cones than anyone. it was a sobering experience and a valuable experience about the

emeryville camera. upper 80s today in the east bay. what about tomorrow, labor day? well, lisa has the answer in ju let's check out sports. big news for both bay area nfl teams. the 49ers lost starting running back jerick mckinnon. that's because he suffered a torn acl on the last play of practice yesterday. and the raiders traded defensive player of the year, khalil mack, to the chicago bears. abc 7 sports anchor, mindi bach, has the details in this morning's sports. >> good sunday morning, everyone. khalil mack held out from raiders' training camp as he wanted to be the highest-paid defensive player in the league. and he will be. but not by oakland. the chicago bears in the 2016 defensive player of the year agreed to a six-year, $141 million contract extension with $90 million in guaranteed money. thbears and mack were able to come to that agreement after oakland traded him a second round and fifth round pick to chicago. in return, the bears gave the raiders first and sixth round picks in 2019 and first and third round picks in 2020. the raiders also free up $13.5 million in salary. defense led the bears to a fifth straight win in the home opener, but cal does not have a starting quarterback. head coach justin willcock said he will address the situation when it's right but now is not the time. three different players for cal as they took on unc. but patrick lair provided most of the offense. this is a three-yard plunge for the score. he had 99 rushing yards in this one. the defense held unc to just 38 yards in the first half. cameron goode put the bears up chase garbe half. pksda

this vantage point showing has a skies here downtown. the coastal fog is with us. it's patchy. that marine layer is shallower. that wind shift bringing the haze and moderate air quality back into the bay for today and tomorrow, the holiday. but it's going to be warmer. so it is feeling more like summer. the microclimate is in full swing today and tomorrow. if you're spending time in the east bay, we'll be in the 90s for the next several days. a cooldown, a modest one, takes you through the end of the week. if you thought the warm weather was here to stick around, no, we'll be near average for much of the week. today it looks pretty nice. on the peninsula, the winds will pick up. the sea breeze will help the air quality numbers. climbing through the 60s, mid- and upper 70s from san mateo to mountain view, and a pretty comfortable evening. if you're going to the art festival this afternoon, it will be around 70 degrees at 2:00. temperatures will be very comfortable. the skies will have that sort of milkqupper

60s for the giants game. hopefully they can turn this one around with the mets and highs today around the bay ranging from those 60s at the shoreline. so we're going to scour out the fog. and it will be has an at times. 67 in san francisco. we haven't reached the 70 degrees that would be average for this time of year. temperatures in the low 70s over in oakland and emeryville. upper 80s, that's the warm-up for you inland with 81 in san jose, about 70 in santa cruz. mid-80s but the haze continues for lakeport and windsor this afternoon. so overnight tonight, the fog not too expansive. it's going to be around the marin county coastline, patchy at the san mateo coast. otherwise that means nice quick burnoff and a sunny day for labor day. remember the moderate air quality through the holiday. download our accuweather app. a little change on tuesday, the temperature slides about two, three, maybe four degrees the rest of the week. we're kind of following up on august trends, which have been cooler and really nothing too

average commute nationally across 1,000 cities is just over 52 minutes. in the east bay, commuters from oakland, berkeley, and hayward are in gridlock for 67 minutes per day which translates into 523 lost days. luis flores is one of those drivers. he commutes from hayward to jobs on the peninsula. that means crossing the bridges. >> i remember maybe five, six years ago, by 3:00 you could still make it within an hour or so. right now, after 2:00, it's maybe an hour and a half or so just to cross the bridge. >> reporter: it may surprise you that the silicon valley commute is closer to the national average, clocking in at 54.5 minutes per day or 27 lost days in traffic, 12 1/2 minutes shorter than east bay commuters. the ceo of the bay area council. >> we're trying to make an investment to get people out of their cars and into transit.

is part of a bigger picture. that bigger picture is statewide mutual aid. california years ago realized the need to work together. teamwork is important to protect the community, but we have to do it the right way. we have a working knowledge and we can reduce the impacts of a small disaster, but we need the help of experts. pg&e is an integral part of our emergency response team. they are the industry expert with utilities. whether it is a gas leak or a wire down, just having someone there that deals with this every day is pretty comforting.
