folks are on vacation and don't know it's happening. >> meantime, on the east coast, more rain. up to 5 inches in maryland led to multiple water rescues. outside baltimore crews suspended the search overnight for a missing woman, 34-year-old melissa lehew and her boyfriend were helping a stranded driver when rushing water swept her away. >> it pushed her legs under the guardrail a little bit and her head was below the water. i was trying to pull her up and she was gone within a second. >> the body of the driver the couple was trying to help was discovered. rescuers say the conditions are too dangerous to continue the search for lehew. >> she was very religious and always wanted to help anyone she could, even perfect strangers. she was just the nicest girl in the world, and that was who she was. >> in the heartland relentless heavy rains and high winds. this ominous supercell thunderstorm spotted rotating along the horizon in kalamazoo,

michigan. in kansas, dangerous driving conditions as high winds gusting up to 65 miles an hour kick up dust and nearly blind this driver. the storms wreaking havoc on college football's opening week delaying games across the country. a fan sharing these dramatic imagines of the sky lighting up above the stadium in nebraska forcing the huskers to cancel their first game of the season and flood watches have been posted in south florida because of that tropical storm threat. we're going to have the latest track from accuweather in just a few minutes. breaking overnight shots rang out at a racetrack in southern california before a concert featuring rapper ice cube. sheriff's deputies shot a suspected gunman at dell mar racetrack in san diego. investigators say the man fired into the crowd moments after learning that concert tickets were sold out. shooting caused chaos outside the track. it also unnerved the announcers inside who heard the gunfire during a horse race. >> there's gunfire at the track.

there's gunfire at the track. >> the gunman was taken to the hospital. there was no immediate word on his condition. nobody else was hurt. confirmation hearings are set to get under way tomorrow for supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh despite a call by some democrats for a delay. they're outraged the trump administration is withholding 100,000 documents on kavanaugh citing constitutional privilege. abc's emily rau has the latest from washington, d.c. where it will be a busy week ahead. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis. senate democrats first tried to protest this nomination of kavanaugh and then delay the hearings, but his confirmation could come well before the november midterms. judge brett kavanaugh will go before the senate judiciary committee starting on tuesday answering a wide range of questions about abortion, executive power, and his time in the george w. bush white house. >> this is not normal. >> reporter: satmy klobuchar appearing on nbc's "meet the press"

kavanaugh has done intense mock hearings to prepare for this week, and sources tell abc news he is not expected to offeany sort of commitment to recuse himself from cases involving investigations of the president. kendis and janai. >> well, that should create some heated moments, no doubt, from some senators there. emily rau, thank you. after a week of emotional eulogies and remembrances, john mccain has been laid to rest. the senator's horse drawn casket was closely followed by his wife and children at the naval academy in annapolis. he was buried in a private ceremony next to an admiral who was a lifelong friend and he was honored with a military flyover. president trump was not invited to any of the softs but his daughter ivanka and her husband jared kushner attended saturday's memorial. a source close to mccain's daughter meghan tells abc news the couple wasn't personally invited but mccain's wife gave her blessings after senator lindsey graham asked if she would object to their presence. anger over the child sex abuse scandal in the catholic church boiled over as

washington, d.c. cardinal donald wuerl spoke. a heckler interrupted wuerl who was accused of mishamming abuse allegations while he was the bishop in pittsburgh. the disruption came as wuerl asked churchgoers to remain loyal to the pope. >> shame on you. >> at each mass we -- yes, my brothers and sisters, shame. i wish -- i wish i could redo everything over these 30 years as a bishop. >> did you hear what the protester said? he said, shame on you, and then you see him there walking out. he says he wants wuerl to spend less time defending himself and more time talking about what he did wrong. another protester in a different part of the church called on wuerl to resign. many others have done so as well. time now for a look at your weather forecast for this labor day.

we're back with new video of a museum going up in flames overnight. this is the brazilian national museum in rio de janeiro. the 200-year-old building housed millions of historical artifacts including a collection from ancient egypt. now, officials say nearby fire hydrants just were not working and there's concern this morning that most of the 20 million artifacts in the building may have been destroyed. the fire broke out after the museum had closed, so there were no injuries. but still this morning they're trying to figure out what caused the fire. and back in this country four people are missing and presumed dead after two boats collided on the colorado river in southern california. authorities say both boats sank throwing everyone into the water. nine people were injured. passing boaters helped pull victims from the water. authorities say nobody was wearing a fe jket. llg her lear if alcohol or speed

husband by poisoning him with eye drops. officials say lana clayton confessed to putting eye drops in her husband's food and water for several days. the 64-year-old was found dead in their home. his autopsy showed high levels of a chemical commonly found in the over-the-counter eye drops. >> she revealed that she used the liquid which is normally like eye drops, put it in his food and she did it without his knowledge. >> wow. so stephen clayton's funeral was weld in their backyard before his wife's arrest. investigators have not released details on a motive. some bad news for travelers. it now costs more to check your bags on united. the airline has decided to follow jetblue in raising its baggage fees by $5 to 30 bucks for the first bag, $40 for the second. the nation's two biggest airlin are expected to follow suit. united's higher fees apply to all domestic and some international flights. izing fog

police even laid down spike strips in the road, but that di she eventually rammed into the back of that truck like you see. that's when she gets out, watch this, grabs her baby in the car seat and started running. she then tried to carjack another woman who had her own child with her. a trooper arrived and you'll see in just a second there. the trooper takes her down. she's facing a number of charges including child endangerment. thankfully amazingly her baby wasn't hurt. the father of murdered iowa college student mollie tibbetts has a message for anyone using his daughter's death to further their political agenda. he's asking them to show some decency. he is responding to comments about the immigration status of mollie's alleged killer. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: a plea from the grieving father of mollie tibbetts, rob tibbetts writing this op-ed in "the des moines register" with this request in bold, don't distort her death to advance racist views. >> mr. rivera, did you kill mollie tibbetts?

>> reporter: officials say the man charged with killing the 20-year-old, cristhian rivera, is an undocumented immigrant from mexico. the case immediately drawn into the center of the national conversation on immigration. >> mollie tibbetts, an incredible young woman, is now permanently separated from her family. a person came in from mexico illegally and killed her. we need the wall. we need our immigration laws changed. >> reporter: tibbetts writing, please leave us out of your debate. responding to this op-ed in the same paper written by donald trump jr. in which the president's son writes, democrats are seemingly more concerned with protecting their radical open borders agenda than the lives of innocent americans. tibbetts writing, i encourage the debate on immigration, but do not appropriate mollie's soul in advancing views she believed were profoundly racist. the act grievously extends the crime that stole mollie from our family and is to quote donald

trump jr., heartless and despicable. and the suspect accused of murdering mollie tibbetts is being held on $5 million bond. he has not yet entered a plea. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> authorities in amsterdam say terrorism was the motive in the stabbing of two american tourists in the city's train station. authorities say the suspect, a 19-year-old afghan citizen, targeted the americans. he was shot and wounded by police, and he is due this court today. police say he had a german residency permit. the americans are now recovering from friday's attack. now to a jailhouse interview with the man at the center of a stand your ground case in clearwater, florida. michael drejka is speaking out for the first time since he shot and killed markeis mcglockton outside a convenience store. drejka had confronted mcglockton's girlfriend for parking in a handicapped spot. he opened fire after mcglockton pushed him to the ground.

going to stay on top of this breaking news and bring you much more as soon as we get it. >> sheriff's deputies shot a man outside the racetrack near san diego right before an ice cube concert last night. this is video of the man on the ground. investigators say he twoontsds get a ticket and -- wanted to get a ticket and was told none there was an argument, the man pulled out a gun and started firing into the air and deputies took action. we don't know his condition right now. nobody else was hurt. four people are still missing after two boats collided. this happened on the colorado river near the california/arizona border. crews have been searching since that crash happened at 8:00 saturday night. ten people were hurt. two others came away unscathed. the spot where the crash happened is between two popular marinas and the river is busy because of the holiday weekend. investigators say everyone from both boats were thrown into the water and both boats sank. >> unfortunately in this case the prime example no one was
