the prime example no one was wearing life jackets. it's not mandated they do so, but we encourage folks to do that because of the situation just like this. >> investigators say it is too early to say what may have caused the boats to collide. it's 4:30. just joining us, let's get a quick update on your weather and traffic. hi there, mike. >> good morning, hi, everybody. let me throw together the big story for the day, a spare the air day. everybody wants to be outside. the greatest amount of caution should be taken in the south bay where you have the best chance of dealing with poor air quality during the entire day today. all right. let's take a look at what's going on as far as our planning. you can see the clouds are arriving late and keeping temperatures in the mid 50s to upper 50s. now we'll be around 60 to 70 for the coast and bay to near 80 inland by noon. look at this, 60s, 70s, nearly 90s by 4:00 and back into the 50s and 60s by 7:00. >> not many folks on the roads

as you would imagine. light volumes, southbound 680 around north main street we are looking at a few vehicles. really, really light commute if you are heading out or one of the few who does have to work today. mass transit, we've got a sunday schedule in effect for bart due to the labor day holiday and we still have the oakland track work. i'll talk more about that coming up in a few. a bus bridge is in place. no service for ace rail for the holiday. you have to drive getting out of the central valley and muni on a sunday schedule for labor day. limited service today. next traffic update coming up around 4:40. this morning, bart passengers aren't the only people afraid of becoming a target of violence. now bart employees say they have reason to fear. >> an unprovoked attack on a station agent happened as bart cut back on police staffing. amy hollyfield is live for us in walnut creek. amy? >> reporter: hi. this is not what bart passengers

want to hear as they start the new week. a station agent was suckerpunched in the face friday night. he is said to be recovering. the man who hit him had been harassing two female passengers and the agent was trying to help them when he was hit. bart riders say this is upsetting. >> it does not surprise me anymore. and i'm concerned. i have friends who are concerned. coming here late at night is really kind of scary and i love the city of oakland, but i hope something is done about it. i hope soon. >> reporter: there's still a huge reminder at the macarthur bart station of nia wilson's murder. there's this memorial to her still there. she was stabbed to death in juld bart responded by forcing their police officers to work overtime so they would all be patrolling the trains. the mandatory overtime has come to an end with officials saying

the officers need a break. they can still volunteer to do the overtime patrols if they want to. reporting live at walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. also developing this morning, the search is on for the robbers who hit yet another apple store. this is video from the store in burlingame. we're told a group came in just after 11:00 yesterday morning and started grabbing items from the display tables. you can see here from our video appears they took just about everything on one of those tables near the front door. this is not a one-time thing. this is video from robberies in corte madeira, walnut creek, emeryville and santa rosa. all have happened within just the past two weeks. emeryville police tell us they do think those crimes are all related. berkeley police want to find the person who attacked and robbed an eighth grader. >> this happened while she was biking home from school. reporter leslie brinkley has that. >> it's been so exciting to see

kassiopeia be excited to go and ride her bike to school and be in charge and like have all the confidence. >> reporter: kassiopeia has always been home schooled. last week was her first week in willard middle school. she drove home on russell street at 5:10 friday afternoon, a popular bike route because of the barriers in the road and less traffic. but she sensed a car following her. police say a man jumped out and stole her backpack from the basket of the bike and pushed her down. >> like i still can't really get that image out of my head of like that happening. >> reporter: she's scraped and bruised but otherwise is okay. >> she's scared now. >> reporter: the family says neighbors gave surveillance video to police. >> they had the foresight to not have license plates on their car or, you know, those kinds of things. that's just so intentionally -- to do that, it just seems -- >> to stalk a kid on a bike. >> yeah. >> and take their backpack. >> yeah. i mean what is -- you know,

someone of her age going to have in her backpack that there is going to be of value. that's a desperate sort of mentality i guess. >> gray in color, contents include an ipod. little items. >> reporter: kassiopeia was worried about her lost homework. the community pitched in to an amazon registry and everything was replaced including her bike. >> i was really surprised so quickly all of my things were replaced and so many people care. >> it's both sides of humanity in the same story, right. the worst and the best of it. >> reporter: for now kassiopeia's family will be giving her a ride to school until her new bike comes and she feelsup to riding it. in berkeley, leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> what a tough way to start. a woman who fell 40 feet into marin county creek is recovering. video shows the rescue. you can see crews airlifting her out. the woman in her 40s was walking near the cataract falls when she

fell. officials called in a chopper so they could get to her faster and she was hurt but she is expected to be okay. crews plan to inspect a dam in the south bay concerned about it following a 3.4 magnitude earthquake that happened at the reservoir around 7:00 last night. that's about five and a half miles from milpitas. officials are concerned how the dam can stand up to an earthquake. crews inspected it last night and will look at it again today. in 2001 the state ordered the water level be reduced by 60% as a precaution. a new dam is in the works and the project expected to be done next year. severe weather is making for a stormy labor day weekend from the upper midwest to the south. a small torna zoo, michigan, on the ground for a couple minutes. no one was killed or injured in the storm. at least one other tornado was reported in the state. we'll take you to the east coast where it's rain that is the issue. flooding has turned deadly in

maryland where one man died and a woman is missing after getting swept away. there is a new threat looming with a tropical storm for parts of the gulf coast. a spare the air alert is in effect throughout the bay area today. the millions of cars on bay area roads combined with hot temperatures and wildfire smoke are expected to cause poor air quality. residents are encouraged not to drive and outdoor activities should be done in the early morning. this is the 11th spare the air alert for smog this year. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's take a look and i did double check that temperature in san jose. it is 71 down there. that's 13 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. most of us a little warmer because of the clouds coming over and trapping the heat. we're in the mid to upper 50s across san francisco, sunnyside 54. how about 58 coming through the ferry building today maybe. probably not. here's a look at what's going on from south beach.

it's quiet on the roads and in the sky above us. if you're on the water north of the bay bridge there is a small craft advisory and cool to warm for mass transit today. all right. let's take a look at what's going on temperature wise. head down to the south bay. we're going to drop back into the 60s in most neighborhoods. back to 77 at noon and low to mid 80s for the afternoon hours. down to 72 during the evening hours. for the east bay shoreline, mostly cloudy and 60, near 70 with sunshine by noon. hanging out in the low to mid 70s during the afternoon hours, down to 64, jacket weather at 8:00. as we look at our east bay valley some of our warmest temperatures will start at 62 but will jump into the upper 70s but will jump into the upper 70s by noon with on sunshine and near 90s. >> i'm here so for me, hopefull.

we're looking at very empty roadways. no vehicles heading southbound across the golden gate bridg are on of the few wor today. i want to talk about mass transit. you could run into trouble here if you're planning on taking bart. they still have the major track repairs going between 19th and west oakland stations. that means you'll have to use free bus bridge instead that could add significant delays to your commute if you're traveling through the oakland area. normal service should resume tomorrow and if they finish early they will wrap that up if they can. it is scheduled all day today. next traffic update in about ten minutes. >> thank you. a final farewell for senator john mccain. he was laid to rest yesterday. the navy released these photos at the u.s. naval academy in annapolis, maryland. mccain was buried next to one of his friends admiral chuck larson. the two graduated together in

1958. confirmation hearings begin this week for president trump's supreme court pick brett kavanaugh. >> judge kavanaugh will go before the judiciary committee starting tomorrow. senate democrats are demanding the release of 100,000 documents from kavanaugh's time in the george w. bush white house. the trump administration is withholding those documents. democrats are expected to press kavanaugh to recuse himself from any cases that involve investigations against president trump. >> should he recuse himself? >> totally depends on the case. >> cases involving president trump? >> i'm sure judge kavanaugh will follow the guidelines and recuse himself in cases where he should. >> executive power, campaign finance reform, gun violence among the many topics senators will ask kavanaugh. coming up your final chance to visit a very quirky bay area museum. why it's closing for good today and when all the stuff goes up for auction. have you been experiencing a problem with your iphone? you are not alone.

and gilroy and 70 in santa cruz with afternoon sunshine. most of the peninsula about 78 in redwood city, low to mid 60s along the coast and mid 60s in downtown, upper 60s south san francisco to sausalito at 72. mid to upper 70s around san rafael and vallejo and the deeper into the valleys you start to hit the mid 80s around lakeport. mid to upper 70s for the east bay shore. as you move inland we'll flirt around 90s degrees about everywhere. tonight's temperatures low to upper 50s except in san jose and antioch. 60s. here's my accuweather seven-day forecast. we will let the heat out a little bit as we head through the middle parts of the week and go average all the way foot weekend. here's alexis. >> good morning. we are much lighter than average on the roads this morning as you would expect on a holiday here. so checking out the central valley, yep, we're in the green, one of the few days we can enjoy

the i-680 off ramp at mission boulevard north. the east bay times reports in less than three years there have been five major big rig rollovers. a month ago a truck rolled and landed on a car. fortunately everyone survived. last year a big rig spilled 75 tons of dirt. possible solutions including more signs, installing rumble strips or changing the slopes of the ramp. your last chance to visit play land at the beach is closing for good today. the museum features pinball machines and a miniature circus. the many items were donated. it opened ten years ago but closing to make way for condos. items will be auctioned off in a few week on september 15th. >> i would love to have a skiball machine. in my house. never leave. >> that would be fun.

>> it's a dry labor day at a popular fountain in the south bay. >> abc 7 news visited the fountain in san jose and as you can see in water. our media partner the mercury news the fountain ran for a day since last winter. crews fixed a bad valve and problems with the electrical system but now a parks person says a filter isn't working right. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. with the cooler conditions coming at us or at least not as hot. the air quality will improve through the week. take a look at a couple tropical storms that are churning in the pacific once again. the one that really concerns me more is hurricane norman's major hurricane and it is going to weaken as it heads towards hawaii and skirt the islands to the north. looks like some dangerous surf and bad weather like in florida will make its way to hawaii. this is possibly a hurricane
