>>ood morning, south bay. >> this is "abc 7 mornings." >> it is quiet in the city on this labor day. a live look at the embarcadero in san francisco. light traffic today so you have to get to work, you're in luck. you'll get there fast. good morning on this monday, september 3rd. >> that's right. if you're at work we are right there with you. you want to be careful if you're firing up the grill today. meteorologist mike nicco has more on a spare the air in effect today. >> the 11th one. hi, everybody. it's for poor air quality likely to develop in the south bay. we'll all be under that umbrella. let's take a look at what's going on. faster sea breeze. you can see it's 25 mile per

hour wind in fairfield. overlay the winds on doppler 7. the cloud cover is increasing as we speak. not hearing of any drizzle out there. let's take a look at what's going to happen today. pretty cloudy through the morning, mid to upper 50s. we'll have sunshine by noon except for the coast. cloudy than the last couple days. you're in the low 60s, 68 to 75 around bait from noon to 4:00. 78 to 89. back in the 50s, 60s and 70s by 7:00. a check of that morning commute. what are you tracking? >> you can hardly call it a commute today. we are holiday light as you would expect. looking at san jose, 101 and 880, very light inbound traffic. south of here around mckey reports of a vehicle fire. sounds like a semi might have a fire but they made it off to the shoulder. that's not a blocking situation. i will keep an eye on that. the one place you could have trouble if you're planning on taking bart. we have the major track repairs

between west oakland stations. a free bus bridge will be provided but no trains are running. they will have to get on a bus instead. normal service is scheduled to resume tomorrow. if you are going to be heading to any labor day festivities or to work via bart plan on that being part of your commute today. next traffic update in ten minutes. >> the bus bridge is a real drag. thank you. this weekend another bay area apple store was robbed, this is the fifth robbery in the past three weeks. >> look at this map where the stores were targeted in core de madeira and emeryville and walnut creek. this week's took place in burlingame and that's where reporter matt keller is live this morning with more on this latest crime. matt? >> good morning. this one happened here at this apple store in burlingame at 11:30 on sunday morning. they were only open an hour and a half when opened by this group. they grbabbed items from the

display tables. it appears they took about everything on one of the tables near the front door. no one was hurt. this is a trend we've been seeing in the bay area in recent weeks. five thefts since august 22nd including the one in burlingame. surveillance video from walnut creek, emeryville and santa rosa shows the thieves acted in similar ways. they call it a grab and run where they grab the electronics from the display tables and take off to a getaway car outside. these are expensive crimes. police estimate the thieves have gotten away with the electronics worth from 19,000 to more than $36,000. emeryville police say they believe some of the cases are connected and are working with other police departments. i reached out to apple about the thefts and they have yet to get back with me. reporting live in burlingame, matt keller, abc 7 news. now a live desk update. >> from abc 7 mornings. >> from our live desk a fire at brazil's 200-year-old national museum is under control this morning. this is such a huge loss.

i'm not just saying that because i'm from brazil. there were millions of artifacts destroyed. there were towering flames. the fire started last night a couple hours after the museum closed for date. firefighters had trouble fighting the blaze because the two hydrants closest to the museum were not working. there were some 20 million artifacts inside, including the oldest human remains ever found in the americas. officials say they were able to rescue some pieces but most were destroyed. the good news here is no one was hurt. and the cause of that fire is still under investigation. new this morning a body found in the south bay. the chp is investigating a possible drug overdose near the capitol expressway interchange in san jose. an officer says the body was found along the northbound side of 87 around 9:45 last night. chp has not yet identified that body. happening today, more than a thousand health care workers will march in oakland to protest

plans by kaiser that they say would undermine patients and caregivers. workers will meet at moss wood park at 11:30 and march across the street to kaiser medical center. the workers union says kaiser is laying off employees, outsourcing jobs and won't engage in negotiations. a bill that would prevent middle and high school students from starting classes before 8:30 a.m. is now on governor brown's desk. the state legislature passed the bill late friday night. supporters say a later start time is better for students' health. opponents say it should be left to school control and starting later could make it difficult for working parents to drop off their kids. a moving tribute for a bay area music teacher killed during a fishing trip. kate larson was in santa clara where the community is raising money for the teacher's wife and children.

♪ >> he brought us together with the common interest of the flute and loving music. >> reporter: he died when swept out to sea on a fishing trip in monterey in may. the 34-year-old teacher taught young musicians all over the bay area, the chinese bamboo flute. may was his student for six years. she and dozens of families spent the summer organizing this benefit at santa clara university. >> he taught us a lot and brought us all together and we're a huge, big family and we're going to support his wife and children even though he won't be here. physically he's still with us, spiritually and mentally. >> reporter: his widow and two young sons showed up during the concert to accept a book that students filled with letters and photos. >> he is only for his family. >> reporter: this is his father. before he died he wanted to hold

a recital for all his students. the california youth chinese symphony, pluck schools and private lessons. the concert was held to honor his work and raise money to help his wife. >> hopefully she will be strong enough to raise his two kids and, you know, life has to be more forward. >> reporter: his students will move forward by continuing their musical education. the family says they are looking for a new teacher, not to replace him but to keep his music alive. ♪ in santa clara, kate larson, abc 7 news. >> certain lay beautiful act of kindness by the students. happening today, some of california's best cyclists will spend the day racing around the streets of san francisco. the 44th annual giro de san francisco gets under way in a few hours and will close down streets around levy parkway and the embarcadero. it includes ten races and the

as far as san francisco goes we're going to wake up cloudy this morning, about 55 degrees. we will see breaks in the clouds by 10:00. 56. sunshine and a few high clouds and low to mid 60s during the afternoon hours. up in the north bay we're waking up with partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions, 55, by 10:00 at 64 degrees, noon in the mid 70s and top out for a couple hours in the low to mid 80s, back down to about 68 by 8:00. nothing too extreme in these two micro climates. over to alexis. extreme traffic this morning for sure. >> yeah. we've got some really light volumeses as y volumeses as you expect. a couple incidents that popped up a few minutes ago. state route 37 just before lakeville highway, a solo vehicle crash blocking one lane. a little delay if you are coming in towards the sears point area. keeping an eye on that. emergency crews are on the scene. that was one vehicle. between one and two vehicles involved in this one, southbound 101 before state route 92, a

janay norman has the latest developments. >> in the "gma" first look the father of mollie tibbetts, the iowa college student found dead weeks after going out for a jog is putting partisan politics on blast. in a scathing op-ed in the "des moines register" rob asked the death of his daughter allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant not be used to promote various political agendas or advance a caution cause she vehemently opposed writing at her eulogy i said mollie was nobody's victim or a pawn in other's debate. he comments a rebuttal to donald trump jr.'s own opinion piece in the same publication arguing democrats have a heartless and despicable response to mollie's murder, writing they are more concerned with protecting their radical open borders agenda than the lives of innocent americans. more on rob tibbetts' response at 7:00 a.m. with your "gma" first look, i'm janay norman, abc news, new

york. texas law enforcement show a high-speed chase involving a woman and her baby. chopper video with audio from state troopers. >> at least 100 miles an hour. the highway patrol. went off road. she's about to wreck. still got it. hold here. 1050. she's got the baby and running. >> female wit a baby is running southbound from the crash. >> we're getting in a white nissan. troops in front of it. hold it here. doors are open. troops trying to get her out now. the baby is safe. >> that is unbelievable video. county officials where this happened say the woman had an outstanding warrant. the baby is now with social services. >> oh, my goodness. google executives will not testify on capitol hill this week over russia's meddling in the 2016 election. top execs from twitter and facebook will attend wednesday's hearing with a senate

intelligence committee. google's ceo declined the invitation. instead he's going to send a lawyer. the hearing comes a week after president trump accused google of being biased against conserve tivgs. in the north bay, a push for an initiative to protect the san geronimo golf course has half the nurse needed to get it on the ballot until the deadline according to the marine independent journal. the initialtive would require the properties continued use as a golf course unless voters approve a change. the marin county board of supervisors voted last year to buy the golf course and convert it into public open space. a citizens group has filed a lawsuit to block the purchase. students at the city college of san francisco are reportedly contemplating legal action due to class cuts. according to the san franciscoing examiner the college canceled classes because of low enrollment. a recent policy change established a minimum class size of 20 students.

a student told the examiner that some won't be able to graduate on time and their only recourse is to pursue a lawsuit. uc santa cruz is asking faculty and staff to offer housing to students. the director of housing services says several hundred are on the wait list. the university has a community rental page but there are only 172 listings. a letter sent to faculty and staff says offering a room to student would be a support to their success at ucsc. when you think of nestle you may think of twix bars or kit-cats. according to bloomberg the company is starting a program focused on health and wellness, happening in japan. about 100,000 people are participating in the ambassador program. they sent pictures of their food to an app which recommends a personalized supplement plan. they're sent nutrient teas, smooth this and snacks. the program includes a home dna kit that tests for common health

risk likes high cholesterol and diabetes. my favorite story of the morning, thousands of people on social media are sharing a photo, a heartwarmingon beeen a neonatal intensive care nurse and one of her former patients. lucille pack card children's hospital shared the photo on the facebook page. that is nurse vilma wong. she discovered that her new colleague is the premature baby she carried for 28 years ago. he is healthy and a second year pediatric resident. during his morning rounds at the nicu, vilma recognized his name, asked him some questions, and then realized yep, you're the boy. >> wow. >> now the man. >> that's so special. >> isn't that amazing? >> oh, yeah. that's beautiful. that's awesome. >> what are the odds? >> yeah. >> what are the odds that she would remember his name all those years later?

>> right. that shows how much compassion she has for the, you know, the children and the baby she's caring for. >> that's a great nurse. >> amazing. let's talk about some pretty nice weather today. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. here's a look at walnut creek where let's becoming cloudy and about 56 degrees right now. we'll see sunshine everywhere, pockets of it at the coast. temperatures will be close to average. becoming cloudy, a little drizzle near the coast tonight and the heat will ease a little bit as we head through the rest of the week. a look at the cloud cover. makes its deepest penetration by about 7:00, reaching the south bay. but notice by noon it's just about clearing out everywhere except for the coast and even at the coast you can see blue show up every once in a while. it's there. by 7:00 starts to make the march back towards the east. temperatures in the south bay not nearly as hot as yesterday in san jose. 98 degrees. is that amazing. 77 in milpitas, 87 los gatos and about 91 in gilroy. temperatures comfortable on the

peninsula, low to mid 70s, 78 in redwood city, the warm spot. low to mid 60s along the coast, mid to upper 60s in downtown and south san francisco where it's going to be breezier than it was yesterday. same thing in the north bay. see how it keeps vallejo and sausalito in the 70s. we have 80s through the valleys. up into the 90s almost 100 around lakeport and ukiah. 70 in berkeley to 79 in fremont where it won't be as breezy and how about upper 80s to low 90s in our east bay valleys. my accuweather, seven-day forecast. temperatures drop about i would say four to six degrees by thursday and hold steady through the weekend. >> nice and quiet on the roads as you would expect on a delay here. no bay bridge metering lights. in fact, i would be really surprised if they even have to turn those on today. typically it is starting to fils see those on between 5:20 and 5:30. not yet today. very little company if you are heading through the toll plaza into san francisco. mass transit we have a lot of

point that should thin out quickly with the extremely light holiday volumes. a rollover crash, southbound 101 on the peninsula in san mateo just before state route 92. sounds like that is fully contained to the right shoulder. never did see a backup with that one. new issue incident issue either one in the south bay. i will talk about that next. bart passengers aren't the only people afraid of becoming a target of violence. now bart employees say they have reason to fear. >> an unprovoked attack at a station agent happened just as bart cut back on police staffing. abc 7 news reporter amy sicaers ld is live in walnutam want to hear about as they start a new work week. this time it was the station agent that was attacked. he was sucker punched from behind in the face while trying to help two female passengers who were being harassed. he is said to be recovering.

bart riders say this is upsetting to hear about. >> i feel like this is like really like getting out of control. i just feel like it just keeps happening like very often and like it just doesn't feel safe to come to bart no more, i guess. >> reporter: macarthur bart is where 18-year-old nia wilson was murdered. there is still a large memorial to her. she was stabbed in what police called a random attack. bart responded by forcing officers to work mandatory overtimes to patrol the trains. that order has come to an end. officials are saying that the police need rest. they can still volunteer to work overtime if they want to. police have not made any arrests in the attack on the station agent. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> we're following breaking news in southern california where ten people were shot at an apartment

complex in san bernardino. i want to show you the scene from overnight that happened before 11:00 last night and this is new video. police say a group got together to play a game in a common area and the shooting happened when someone new showed up. ten people were hurt. at least three of those are in critical condition. it's unclear if police have arrested anyone. we will stay on top of the breaking news and let you know more as soon as we get it. four people are still missing this morning after two boats this happened on the colorado river near the california/arizona border. crews have been searching since that crash happened at 8:00 saturday night. ten people were hurt. two others came away unscathed. it was between two popular marinas and the river is busy because of the holiday weekend. investigators say everyone from both boats were thrown into the water and both boats sank. >> unfortunately in this case the prime example no one was wearing life jackets. it's not mandated they do so, but we encourage folks to do

that because of the situation just like this. >> investigators say it is too early to say what may have caused the boats to collide. sheriff's deputies shot a man outside the delmar racetrack near san diego right before an ice cube concert last night. investigators say he wanted to get a ticket and was told that none were available. there was an argument and the man pulled out a gun and started firing into the air when deputies took action. he was taken to the hospital and his condition is not known and no one else was hurt. also developing the search on for the robbers who hit yet another apple store. this is video from the store in burlingame. we're told a group came in just after 11:00 yesterday morning, started grabbing items from the display tables and in our video it does appear they took just about everything on those tables right near the front door. this is not a one-time thing. this is video from robberies in corte madeira, emeryville and

santa rosa and they have all happ pt do think that these crimes are now related. berkeley police are on the hunt for the person who attacked and robbed an eighth grader while biking hope from school. last week yuz kassiopeia's first week at willow middle school riding her bike home on russell street when police say a man jumped out of a car and stole her backpack from the basket on her bike and then pushed her down. she has some scrapes and bruises, but she's okay. >> like i still can't really get that image out of my head of like that happening. >> she's scared now, you know. it's one of those things like it takes time to get over. >> neighbors sent surveillance video to police and the community pitched in to an amazon registry. they replaced everything, including her bike. for now her family will drive her to school until the new bike arriving and she feels up to riding again.

crews plan to inspect a dam in the south bay again today. they are -- there are some concerns about the dam following a 3.4 magnitude earthquake. it happened at the calaveras reservoir five and a half miles from milpitas. officials are concerned how the dam can stand up against an earthquake. crews will look at it again today. back in 2001 the state ordered the water level be reduced by 60% just as a precaution. there is a new dam already in the works. the project is expected to be done next year. be mindful, a spare the air alert in effect through the bay area. officials say the millions of cars on bay area roads combined with hot temperatures and the wildfires smoke expected to cause some poor air quality. residents are encouraged not to drive and outdoor activities should be done in the early morning. this is the 11th spare the air alert for smog this year. let's talk about what's going on with your forecast. you are never more than seven minutes away. what really sticks out is san

jose's 12 degrees warmer than thrday. still holding on around 70 degrees. it's much more comfortable everywhere else. 55 in orenda, 57 in san leandro. for some of the cooler spots, 60 in hayward, 59 in san carlos. look at that, 70 in san jose. 61 antioch, pleasanton around 55 and a trifecta around santa rosa and napa and novato at 55. san francisco 65 and pacifica 52. a look at san rafael where it's 49 with increasing clouds. if you're driving, maybe a little fog near the coast. otherwise it's pretty quiet out there. ferry ride north of the bay bridge this afternoon small craft advisory and for mass transit cool this morning, but it's going to be a little warm this afternoon. places like the south bay we'll start at 61 for most neighborhoods, near 70 at 10:00. look at the sunshine, 77 at noon and hang out in the low to mid 80s from 1:00 through 6:00. down to 72 at 8:00. the east bay and we start off cloudy and about 60 in the

morning. we'll start to see some sunshine around 10:00. we really won't see the temperatures respond until around 1:00 or 2:00 when we crack the low to mid 70s. that will hang until 6:00 and by 8:00 might need a light jacket and 64 degrees under stars. we will bring alexis in here and see if she can find a hot spot or two. >> we actually have a couple this morning. >> you do? >> yeah. we'll head to the south bay where we have a semi fire on the southbound side of 101. they have updated the location. originally reported around mckey road. sounds like it's closer to oakland road. i believe we are looking at flares due to that at the 880 interchange. that ramp from 880 to southbound 101 is blocked right now as are the two right lanes just beyond this overpass for that vehicle fire. the actual semi that did catch fire is on the right shoulder and that should clear any minute now. it's not causing any delays, but we can zoom in on our traffic maps and show you where that is. really having a tough time

a small tornado now that hit kalamazoo, michigan. it was on the ground for just a couple minutes. nobody was hurt there thank goodness. at least one other tornado was reported in the state. on the east coast it is rain. flooding has turned deadly in maryland where one man died and a woman is missing after getting swept away and there's a new threat with a tropical storm watch for the gulf coast. a south carolina woman is facing murder charges after police say she slowly poisoned her husband with over the counter eye drops. prosecutors allege she spiked his glasses of water three days in a row in july, eventually killing her husband. the arrest warrant says he died after ingesting toxic levels of tetrahydrozoline. the active ingredient found in eye drops. when swallowed in large doses i seizures and even a coma. >> she revealed she used the

donated. the museum opened ten years ago and now closing to make way for new condos. items will be auctioned off in a few weeks on september 15th. a dry labor day at a popular fountain in the south bay. abc 7 news visited the fountain at the plaza in san jose and as you can see, no water. our media partner the mercury news reports the fountain ran for a day after being out of cmmission since last winter. crews fixed the a bad valve and a problem with the electrical system. now apparently there's a problem with a filter. no word on when it's going to be repaired. it's a shame because the kids love that fountain in the heat. >> it was so hot yesterday in san jose. a surprise, a very welcomed guest at a bay area couple's wedding. >> so cool. actor keanu reeves was there. leslie walker and jared kamara got married in santa cruz. on the way to the ceremony at the dream inn who was there but

like it's going to clear any minute. chp did issue a sig alert northbound 880 off ramp to 101 was blocked as of a few moments ago. although looking at our live shot here, this southbound side on our right, i did see some flares coming from 880. it looks like those have burned out. that leads me to believe this is most likely clear. i'm working on confirming that. in the meantime you've got really light volumes, basically around all of the bay area right now. next traffic update coming up at 6:00. let's check in with mike nicco. >> all right. thank you very much. hi, everybody. let's take a look at the traffic, especially the pacific. two formidable storms there. we continue to watch norman, hurricane category 3. let's focus on that one more than olivia. it's going to barrel it ways towards the hawaiian islands and weaken to a category 1 as it moves north. looks like it's going to kick off surf and squalls like we're seeing from this tropical low moving across the florida keys right now.
