camera. a truck fire has cleared and all lanes are back open as well. definitely good news. and pretty much we're looking at wide open roadways. the bay bridge toll plaza no metering lights yet. going to be surprised if they have to turn those on. drive times looking great. to walnut creek another 8, walnut creek to highway 13 love that, 580 tracy to dublin, green wide open at just 26 minutes. >> thank you. developing news as thieves hit another bay area apple store. you're looking at video of four robberies in the past week and a half. >> add the apple store in burlingame to the list. "abc 7 mornings" reporter matt keller is there with that story. >> good morning, jessica and reggie. this happened late yesterday morning. this apple store was open when the group of thieves came in and hit it. they came in and they started taking items off of those display tables. surveillance video has not been

released yet but you can see from our video it appears they took just about everything on one of the tables near the front door. no one was hurt. this is a trend we've been seeing in the bay area in recent weeks. five thefts at apple stores since august 22nd including the one in burlingame. surveillance video from corte madeira and santa rosa shows the thieves acted in similar way where they grab the electronics from the display tables, take tof a getaway cars outside. these are expensive crimes. thieves have gotten away with electronics from 19,000 to $36,000. emeryville police say they believe some of the cases are connected and working with other police departments. i reached out to apple and they have yet to get back with me. live in burlingame, matt keller, abc 7 news. new this morning, a body found in the south bay. a possible drug overdose. on state highway near san jose an officer says the body was

found along the northbound side of 87 around 9:45 last night and chp has not yet identified the body. now a live desk update. >> from abc 7 mornings. a fire at brazil's 200-year-old national museum is under control this morning, but millions of artifacts have been destroyed. i want to show you these flames. this is happening in rio. the fire started last night a couple hours after the museum closed for the day. firefighters had trouble fighting the blaze because the two hydrants closest to the museum were not working. there were some 20 million artifacts inside including the oldest human remains ever found in the americas. officials say they were able to rescue a few pieces, but most of the artifacts were destroyed. it is a huge loss. not just for brazil, for the entire world. no one was hurt and the cause of the fire is still under investigation this morning. a moving tribute for a bay

area music teacher killed this year. his former students held a benefit concert four months >> he taught young musicians all over the bay area the art of the traditional bamboo flute. his students decided to put the concert together to honor his work and raise money for his wife and two young sons. >> we're all a huge big family and we're going to support his wife and children even though he won't be here physically, he's with us spiritually and mentally and we love him. >> his wife and sons attended part of the concert and accepted a book his students filled with letters and photos. today bart riders in the east bay may face delays as track repairs continue. abc 7 was at the 19th street station in oakland where a long line of ridersing with waited fw bridge. crews are repairing the station

between the west station. transit is providing free bus service between the stations and bart has set aside a fourth weekend, september 22nd, in case more work is needed. bart trains are running on a modified schedule this labor day holiday and there will be extra trains in service for people headed to the oakland a's game this afternoon. you can expect traffic to pick up later in the day as some people return home from their labor day weekend vacation. aaa estimated more than 35 million people would drive somewhere more than 50 miles away. experts suggest you get in the car by noon today to get to wherever you're going. the rush is expected to peak about 3:00 p.m. 16.5 million people were expected to fly somewhere this weekend, also an increase of more than 3% from last year. happening today, more than 1,000 health care workers will march in oakland protesting plans by kaiser that they say would undermine patients and caregivers. workers will meet at moss wood park at 11:30 and march across the street

or lake, take the sunscreen, strong sunshine. beaches will have clouds and sunshine, kind of cool in the low to mid 60s and out playing on the bay, north of the bay bridge that's where we've got the small craft advisory from 3:00 this afternoon to 9:00 this evening. quick look at our east bay valley temperatures that's where it's going to be warmest today, mid to upper 80s. >> checking out the roads, heading back to the south bay, that's where we had one of our only issues here this morning. that was a truck that caught fire on southbound 101 near oakland road that closed the northbound 880 off ramp to southbound 101. i knew it looked like those flares were burning out and we did confirm that with chp. that has fully cleared. oh, my gosh. you got to check the pollen count. i feel like i'm going to sneeze. i've been sneezing all morning. okay. i think i made it through. sunday's schedule for bart and the track work in oakland. no service for ace and muni operating on a sunday schedule. >> hang in there. thank you. mollie tibbetts' father is pleading for people to leave her out of the immigration debate.

troops in front of it. hold here. doors are open. troops trying to geter now. the baby is safe. >> that is truly stunning video and officials say the woman had an outstanding warrant. the baby is with social services. new details on the bizarre incidents involving u.s. diplomats in cuba and starting. starting in 2016 we were telling you how three dozen fell ill. scientists now say it could have been caused by some kind of microwave weapon. these are devices that send a beam of energy. the state department says its investigation hasn't identified the cause of the source. in students at city college of san francisco are reportedly contemplating legal action due to class cuts. according to the san francisco examiner the college canceled 177 classes for the semester, many because of low enrollment. a recent policy change established a minimum class size

of 20 students. a student told "the examiner" some won't be able to graduate now on time and their only recourse is to pursue a lawsuit. >> this story is really amazing. a sweet photo being shared by thousands on social media. it shows the heartwarming reunion between a neonatal intensive care units nurse one of her patients. they're calling this a chance encounter. see on the left nurse vilma wong and again on the right 28 years later. that little boy she's holding in her lap is now that man. brandon. he is healthy, he is currently a second-year pediatric neurology resident at packer childrens. during his morning rounds last month vilma recognized his name, asked him a few questions and then confirmed that, in fact, it's a match. >> i love this story. so sweet.

looking back towards the east bay valleys. clouds to sun and seasonal weather. cloudy and drizzle and the heat will ease the rest of the week. the cloud cover covering all of our neighborhoods this morning. pulling back mainly to the coast by noon and just some holes developing there during the afternoon hours while the rest of us will be dealing with high cloud and sunshine. temperatures not as hot in the south bay. 77 in milpitas, 85 san jose, gilroy 91. we'll be in the low to upper 70s. low to mid 60s along the coast and downtown in south san francisco mid to upper 60s. through the north bay valleys, the closer to the water breezy. look at the low to upper 90s in cloverdale and lakeport and ukiah. breezy the cool spot at 76 at san leandro, nearly 80s fremont and then one last stop our east bay valleys, upper 80s to low 90s. my accuweather seven-day forecast, morning clouds, afternoon sunshine, mist near the coast all wait through

today is our 11th spare the air alert for the summer season. mixture of, you know, we've got the smoke coming in from the north and also the potential of smog from, you know, burning fossil fuels. the best chance will be in the south bay but all of us under the spare the air alert this labor day. happening today, the new york yankees come to town to play the oakland a's who continue to make a strong push for the playoffs. but the big story will happen before the game because a's outfielder steven piscoti lost his mom to als this year and made headlines when the cardinals traded him to oakland so that he could be closer to his mother. she lives in pleasanton and

before today's game, the team will actually present a check for $150,000 to the als therapy development institute. he raised that money through a gofundme page in memory of his mom. super sweet story. >> very nice. a bill to prevent middle and high schools from starting classes before 8:30 a.m. is on the governor's desk. the legislature pasted the bill friday night. supporters say a later start time is better for student health. opponents say class schedules should be left to local control and starting later could make it difficult for working parents to drop off their kids. uc santa cruz has a housing crunch and asking faculty and staff to offer housing. the executive director of housing services says several hundreds students are on the on campus housing list. the university does have a community rental page only about 172 spots. a letter sent to facultyafin a t

main street. so honestly i'm having a tough time finding any slow spots. delays later today with bart once again. those major track repairs continue between 19th street and west oakland station to get off and get on a bus. normal service should resume tomorrow. speaking of bart, this morning bart passengers are not the only people afraid of becoming a target of violence. bart employees say they have reason to fear. >> that's because an unprovoked attack on a station agent happened just as bart cut back on police staffing. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek. amy? >> jessica, not what bart riders want to hear as they start the week. a station agent at the macarthur bart station was sucker punched in the face friday night. he is said to be recovering at home. the man who hit him was -- had been harassing two female passengers and the agent was

trying to help them when he was hit. passengers say this is upsetting. >> does not surprise me anymore. i'm concerned. i have friends who are concerned. coming here late at night is really kind of scary. i love the city of oakland, but i hope something is done about it and i hope soon. >> there is still a huge reminder at the macarthur bart station as nia wilson's murder, there is a big memorial there to her. she was stabbed to death on the bart platform in what police called a random attack. her death made national news. bart responded by forcing police to work overtime so they could have a presence patrolling the train so that mandatory overtime has come to an end saying officers need a break but they can still volunteer and do overtime patrols if they want to. police have not made any arrests in the attack on the station agent. live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. a 3.4 magnitude earthquake

struck the south bay at the calaveras reservoir around 7:000 last night. crews inspected the dam because there are concerns how it can stand up to an earthquake. no problems were found but officials will continue to monitor it. back in 2001, the state ordered the water level to be reduced by 60% as a precaution. a new dam is already in the works. that project expected to be done next year. now breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. that breaking news is in southern california, where ten people were shot at at an apartment complex in san bernardino. i want to show you the scene here from overnight. this is new video. it paused here for me. we're having trouble with that. but it happened before 11:00 last night and police say it was a group that was getting together to play a game in the common area of the apartment complex. the shooting happened when someone new showed up. ten people were hurt. at least three are now said to be in critical condition and

it's still unclear if police have been able to arrest anyone. we will let you know as soon as we get updates. >> thank you. speaking of southern californias and shootings, deputies shot a man outside the delmar racetrack before san diego before an ice cube concert last night. investigators say he wanted to get a ticket and and and and and was sold out. there was an argument, the man pulled out a gun and started firing into the air and deputies took action. he was taken to the hospital. we don't know his condition right now. nobody else was hurt. berkeley police are on the hunt for a person who attacked and robbed an eighth grader while she was biking home from school. last week was kassiopeia's first week at willow middle school and she was riding her bike home on russell street when police say a man jumped out of a car and stole her backpack from the basket on her bike and then pushed her down. she had some scrapes and bruises but she's otherwise okay. >> still can't really get that image out of my head, that's why

that is happening. >> she's scared now, you know, and it's one of those things it's like it takes time to get over. >> neighbors sent videos to police and the community has pitched in to an amazon registry and they've been able to replace everything including her bike. for now her family is going to drive her to school until the new bike arriving and she feels up to riding again. four people are still missing after two boats collided. it happened on the colorado river near the california/arizona border. crews have been searching since the crash happened at 8:00 saturday night. ten people were hurt. two others came away unscathed. the spot where the crash happened is between two popular marinas. the river is really busy because of the holiday weekend as you can imagine. investigators say everyone from both boats were thrown into the water and both boats sank. >> in this case a prime example no one was wearing life jackets. it's not mandated they do so,

but we certainly encourage folks to do that. because of situations just like this. >> it's too early to say what might have caused the boats to collide. >> severe weather is making for a stormy labor day weekend from the upper midwest to the south. here's a small tornado that hit near kalamazoo, michigan. it was on the ground a couple minutes and nobody was hurt there. at least one other tornado was reported in that state. now to the east coast where rain is the problem. flooding has turned deadly in maryland where one man died and a woman is missing after getting swept away. there is a new threat looming with a tropical storm for parts of the gulf coast. and here in the bay area, a spare the air alert is in effect. officials say the millions of cars on bay area roads combined with hot temperatures and wildfire smoke are expected to cause some poor air quality. you're encouraged not to drive and outdoor activity should be done in the early morning. this is by the way an 11th spare

the air alert for smog this year. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. wanted to show you what the clouds are doing. they're keeping our temperatures up in most neighborhoods. they haven't quite made it over the east bay valleys. that's why you're a couple degrees cooler than yesterday. down to the south where 69 in san jose right now, at least at the airport, really sticks out, doesn't it. the only other temperatures in the 60s los gatos at 63, everybody else in the mid to upper 50s. also the high yesterday, san jose was about 98 degrees. i'll show you that coming up. temperatures pretty much in the mid to upper 50s everywhere. let's jump into the forecast. if you're going to be commuting today, i'll have your weather forecast. spotty fog, especially near the coast. ferry ride is going to be breezy north of the bay bridge this afternoon. cool to warm if you're taking mass transit. one of the nice areas, east bay look at this, 61, cloudy this morning. we're seeing sunshine by noon, near0. hanging on to mid 70s and 64 by 8:00. in the north bay it's going to be a touch warmer after starting off in the mid 60s.

we'll see sunshine by noon and about 73. hanging around the 80s all the way up until about 5:00 and drop into the upper 70s on our way to upper 60s by 8:00. that sounds like a nice comfortable day other than the fact that it's a spare the air day. how are you? >> hey, i'm doing all right. it's been an extremely light day in the traffic center as you would hope on the holiday. i want to look ahead to something later on today. this is a bicycle race in san francisco. the giro di san francisco bicycle race in san francisco. quite a few closures around battery street and front street and around the plaza there. you could see some delays. i would stick to the embarcadero if you want to get around that. everyone else, boy, we are looking at record-setting light volume umes right now. here is the emeryville heading the bay bridge toll plaza where there are no metering lights and i just checked out this drive time, from highway 4 in hercules to the freemont street one of t few who does have to work today.

a look at some extremely light drive times coming up next. >> thank you. a final farewell for senator john mccain. he was laid to rest in a private ceremony yesterday. the navy released these photos and it was at the u.s. naval academy in annapolis, maryland. mccain was buried next to one of his closest friends. admiral chuck larson. the two graduated together in 1958. confirmation hearings begin this week for president trump's supreme court pick brett kavanaugh. >> judge kavanaugh will be before the senate judiciary committee starting tomorrow. democrats are demanding the release of 100,000 documents from kavanaugh's time in the george w. bush white house. the trump administration is withholding those documents. democrats are expected to press kavanaugh to recuse himself from any cases that involve investigations against president trump. executive power, campaign finance reform and gun violencec senators will ask. google executives will not testify on capitol hill this week over russia's meddling in the 2016 election.

appearance. in the east bay, martinez city officials are set to discuss lifting a moratorium on recreational cannabis sales. at wednesday's meeting members will consider a staff report that recommends the city allow two retail sales licenses and one each for manufacturing, distribution, and lab testing and delivery. the moratorium expires november 1st. the city council could decide to extend it another year. >> it's a dry labor day at a popular fountain in the south bay. abc 7 news visited the fountain in san jose and you can see here, there is simply no water. our media partner the mercury news reports the fountain ran for a day after being out of commission since last winter and that's what it looks like there. crews fixed a bad valve and a problem with the electrical system, but now a park spokesperson says a filter just isn't working right. no word yet on when it will be fully repaired. a new study shows a spike in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder known

today. the museum in el cerrito features memorabilia like pinball machines and a miniature circus. the owner started the collection and many of the items were donated. the museum opened ten years ago but closing to make way for new condos. items will be auctioned off in the next few weeks on september 15th. a new way to get rid of used batteries. some neighbors can put them on top of the black garbage bins. rethink waste shared this post. used batteries and cell phones can go in clear bags. put it out for pick-up on garbage day. this helps prevent hazardous materials from hurting the environment and also free dropoff locations within san mateo county. a father and daughter are heading back to southern california from san francisco after an epic summer trip. >> they visited 30 major league baseball stadiums and abc 7 news was at at&t park yesterday and that is where danny thompson and his daughter emi ended their baseball road trip.
