home inspectors charge a pretty penny to check 0 home before you buy it. can they do a good job? we're going check that out. kevin is here. thanks for being here. you set up a sting, is that what you did? >> i wouldn't say a sting. we set up a house and had 12 inspectors come and paid each of them. they missed a lot of things. we identified 28 problems we thought were way too obvious to miss. as a group, they missed about half of those, a lot, more than we thought really. what disturbed us is not that they missed stuff. i miss stuff. a lot of them didn't do much work for the money. some were in and out in 90 minutes. one guy handed us a 10 page

report, didn't have pictures in it. you do want to use a lot of care finding a home inspector. >> how do you find a good inspector? >> the best way is ask them to send you sample reports, to see how much length they do for you. they should be lengthy reports with pictures and narrative of the problem, i think, is the best way to screen them. >> here's what i say, as far as there are no gorn tees. what did i buy? >> as an industry the standards are somewhat low that you would expect as a buyer. no guarantees. most exclude chimneys and one wouldn't shine a flashlight up it. and don't inspect for pests. don't use a ladder for a roof and especially at this house where the roof was in really bad shape.
