minutes away from your accuweather forecast. let's kick things off with mike nicco. >> good morning. hi, everybody. look at the gray, the cloud cover out there. notice the breeze is light until you get on 80, especially up towards fairfield where it's 29-mile-per-hour wind if you're coming to the west. here's a look at my 12-hour planner. temperatures pretty much the same as yesterday. mid to upper 50s. faster sunshino a little warmer in the noon hour. a little haze also. in the 60s except for inland in the upper 70s. we'll stay in the 60s at the coast. mid 70s around the bay, and upper 80s to low 90s, so warmer at 4:00. pretty nice evening on the way. jacket weather at the coast, 58. the rest of us, 58 to 76. how about the commute? >> other than things filling in much more quickly than yesterday ad really all the summer months, we're pretty quiet. we don't have any major issues to talk about. let's check out some of the speeds getting out of the tracy area, all the way down to 10 miles per hour, westbound 205, and 16 miles per hour on westbound 580. so yes, much, much heavier than

the 60 or 70 miles per hour you were cruising along with yesterday. and here's a live look at one of our busier spots, the san mateo bridge. westbound 92 slowly filling in, but no major delays for you. we'll look at mass transit coming up next. >> thanks. how could you hit a couple of kids on bikes and just keep on driving? that's what people in one south san jose neighborhood are wondering as we get a look at the surveillance video of the incident. one person even tried stopping the driver himself. but it didn't work. this morning, that driver still hasn't been caught. abc 7 news reporter matt keller live for us at san jose police headquarters. matt. >> reggie, thankfully there were no serious injuries but this video is certainly disturbing. two kids down in the street, and the driver just took off. take a look at the video of the hit-and-run. this is from the afternoon of monday, august 27th. you can see a 13-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl on their bikes, approaching the crosswalk of cotyl road and elmalino way in san jose.

a white four-door honda civic rolls through the stop sign and hits them, they go down. he takes off. neighbors say it's common for drivers to roll through the stop sign when turning on to the road. >> people just don't pay attention. with all the cars parked along here, you can't see when you're coming ouft the side streets, so it's really not surprising. it's unfortunate, though. i hope the kids are okay. >> the family of the young boy says he has a broken rist, sprained fingers and bumps and bruises. they say the girl suffered a concussion. both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. police say three people were inside the car. witnesses say they looked like teenagers. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. a recently released pennsylvania grand jury record on wide-spread sex abuse by catholic priests revealed a secret bay area case. according to our media partner, the mercury news, the abuse allegedly happened 18 years ago

at a retreat in los gatos. he was part of the traditionalist prese society at the time. in the year 2000, he was accused of molesting a teenage girl and trying to abuse another. the society sent him to their headquarters in europe and reported him to the vatican. the man did not respond to attempts to reach him. developing news in plaster county where a 650-acre fire is burning in the tahoe national forest. officials say the north fire is spreading aggressively, and evacuations are in place around immigrant gap, that's about 30 miles west of truckee. it's recommended that you don't travel on interstate 80 if you're in that area if you can avoid it. this is a live picture of the fire from bald mountain in eldorado county. the fire was reported late yesterday afternoon and it surprised people enjoying their labor day at the area's campgrounds. >> they were screaming everybody get out, everybody has to pack. leave. i started freaking out. i said can we go back, our baby's there.

>> additional aircraft to help fight the fire will arrive today. friends are mourning a former bay area man who was killed in a helicopter crash in sfaeg over the weekend. >> mohammed czar moved to escape the taliban in 2015. his letter pleading for asylum in the u.s., when the court issued him a death penalty for refusing to join the taliban. he had to hide his family as a result. after his immigration hearing was postponed he moved back to afghanistan last year to be with his wife and four children who were in danger. >> it was a suicide mission for him. >> i told him that he shouldn't go back because i knew that he was receiving a lot of threats. >> he died after the helicopter he was in crashed and caught fire shortly after taking off from an afghan military base. friends say they don't believe reports that the crash was because of a mechanical failure. they fear a bomb was planted in the helicopter. they say he would still be alive

if the rest of his family had been granted asylum to come to the u.s. the ceo of usa gymnastics plans to resign after months of criticism. our sister network espn reports carey perry is expected to make a formal announcement about her resignation today. she took over the organization last year after the previous ceo resigned in light of the larry nassar sexual abuse scandal. former olympians and current national team members have criticized perry for not communicating what changes are being made to make the sport safer. police made at least 75 arrests at a protest outside the san francisco marriott yesterday. union workers from unite here local 2 staged the protest. they're upset over the lack of progress in contract talks. their deal expired august 15th. local 2 represents employees at seven san francisco marriott owned hotels. we reached out to marriott, but

we have not yet heard back. a palo alto man who was recently released from prison in nepal is looking forward to a fresh start back in the bay area. >> wolf price founded the organization within the four walls which educates and shelters young women and girls. the 31-year-old filmmaker was also working on a documentary. his humanitarian work got short in april when police arrested him on marijuana charges. price says the drugs were planted. his mom flew to kathmandu and spent six weeks working to get her son released. they returned to the u.s. sunday night. >> if i want to do social work, which i do want to keep doing, i should do it here. i should help the housing and or different types of problems that are aecting had to dissolve hs organization in nepal, but he plans to build something more successful in the bay area. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's start with east bay temperatures. oakland, 60. hayward, 61.

union city, 60. everybody else around 57 to about 59 degrees. a little cooler in arinda at 56. across san pablo bay, napa at 55. novato, 57. same in san francisco and livermore. 72 in san jose. we have to check that thermometer after it spiked at 98 on sunday and it's been in the 70s the last couple mornings while everything around it has been in the 50s. kind of sticks out. let's talk about what's going on with the roof camera from san francisco. a lot of people like to get out on the embarcadero and exercise. there's a smoke advisory, not a spare the air alert, bought smoke advisory. beaches, light breezes, a little sunshine. if you're on the bay, no small craft advisory like yesterday. it will be calmer and brighter. in the east bay, we start off cloudy and 60. we'll head to 69 degrees with increasing sunshine by noon. full on sunshine in the afternoon hours and mid 70s. grab a coat if you're out around 8:00 as temperatures will be around 64 degrees. all right, let's stop at the peninsula. this is our last one for this

time. 59 and cloudy conditions. that's at 8:00, and becoming partly cloudy, 62 at 10:00. near 70 at noon. very comfortable, and mid 70s for the afternoon hours. you'll also drop back to about 65 degrees under the stars at 8:00. we'll take a look at a slight cooler trend in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's alexis with that ever-increasing morning commute. >> oh, yeah. definitely, mike. a big difference from yesterday, and of course, everyone back at work and school today. so taking you into the tri-valley, sort of trying to get to the bottom of this problem. we have a crash reported on the eastbound side of 84. east of 680. to me, it looks like we have a delay on the westbound side. perhaps the drivers are slowing down to take a look at this. sounds like a box truck may have gone off the roadway, and they're working on getting a tow truck hooked up right now. i don't believe we have any lanes blocked but definitely a little red if you want to stick to 580 and take 680 south. i'm not seeing delays there yet. so far, we have some light volumes on the richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge.

things are filling in as you approach the toll plaza, but no significant backup there. give it another our, i'm sure things will look different. i mentioned a check of mass transit. we'll do that in ten minutes. >> thank you. in today's gma first look, actors are coming to the defense of jeffrey owe ns, best known for his work on the cosby show as elvin. lindsey davis explains why. >> in this morning's gma first look, he played the ever optimistic elvin. cliff and claire hux tuables son-in-law on the cosby show. infamous for wearing his emotions on his sleeve. but this morning, 26 years after the cosby show went off the air, jeffrey owens is back in the news all because a woman shopping at trader joe's snapped photos of him working in a new jersey grocery store. many on social media are seeing it as a form of job shaming and coming to owens' defense. athlete turned actor terry crews saying i swept floors after the nfl, and i would do it again.

you're never more than seven minute away from your accuweather forecast. >> just receiving some terrifying video. it's coming out of japan. it's getting walloped with a typhoon. look at that box truck flip on to the edge and just peels it like a can. just like a toy there. and another car flipped over also. first responders eventually got to the scene. but we unfortunately have not received word on the condition of the driver or if anyone was in that other car. the typhoon is the strongest to hit japan since 1993. 25 years. all right, let's take a look as you are never more than seven minutes away from the accuweather forecast. here's a look at walnut creek. i want to hone in on you guys because you're the warmest with temperatures in the 90s. now, it seems like our highs are confused. san jose and concord, well above average. santa rosa at average. but oakland and san francisco, the closer to the bay and coast,

in palo alto has been under construction for 11 years. these images from google street view show the slow progress on a mariposa street between 2008 and 2017. according to the palo alto daily post, the city just made a deal with the homeowner. he's promised to finish construction by the end of next july to avoid more than a $79,000 fine. he's also agreed to renew his building permit and hide the construction behind a fence. >> if you're thinking about buying a new iphone, you may want to wait a little bit. >> apple is expected to introduce new additions of the phone later this month. after the new models are revealed, analysts say apple will put current models on sale the last week of september. again, you shouldway wait to b new phone, but if you're thinking of selling your old iphone, do it now. used phones will flood the market in a couple weeks driving down prices.

bay except for that fog rolling across the golden gate. that will be a mainstay in the afternoon and evening hours when the entire bank of clouds starts to follow suit. 78 in milpitas. 84 at san jose to 94 in gilroy. what a range in the south bay today. mid 70s to upper 70s on the peninsula. for most of us, millbrae a little cooler as the breeze comes through the san bruno gap. it won't be a strong one compared to yesterday. low to mid 60s along the peninsula coast. mid to upper 60s in downtown and south san francisco. mid 60s along the north bay coast. as you move to the valleys, low to mid 80s. very nice on the east bay shoreline from 73 to 78, and possible air conditioning weather as you move into the east bay valleys with low to mid 90s. my accuweather seven-day forecast, a couple degrees cooler for wednesday and thursday and then we'll see a few 90s for friday and saturday as we hit 8 around the bay and mid 60s at the coast. here's alexis. >> good morning. we have one new issue to talk about on the roads. sounds like a couple large chunks of concrete on northbound

680 in the east bay, just before you get to pacheco boulevard. just north of the highway 4 interchange. so far, not much of a delay and chp on the way to pick it up. hopefully no one is going to hit it with their vehicle before they get there. mass transit off to a great start this morning. b.a.r.t. back to normal service. we had the long weekend of that track work. they did wrap that up. 44 trains in service this morning. you will not have to use the bus bridge. ace back in service today. no delays. ace 1 out on time and ac transit also looking great. normal service, no delays. uber-owned jump bikes is making its way to san francisco's presidio. it will be the first national park in the west coast to offer electric bike sharing. there are some ground rules, including a requirement that e-bikes be parked at bike racks. it also bans them from park trails since technically they're considered motorized vehicles. all of this starts on friday. >> happening today, officials at sfo will talk about the possibility of dedicating part of the airport after the late

mayor ed lee, and you're looking live at a picture of sfo. this would be the first step in the reming ocess. rlr th s mical professionals from the bay area could face prison time and fines after being accused of providing and receiving kickbacks for referring medicare patients. three doctors and three employees of milpitas based medics choice home health were indicted by a federal grand jury. one of the suspects is also accused of threatening former medics choice employees who were voluntarily interviewed by fbi agents. >> a museum housing bay area traditions shut its doors for the last time. playland not at the beach in el cerrito featured memorabilia from the beach arcade that closed in the '70s. the museum opened in 2008, it featured pinball machines, boardwalk games and other relics from bay area lore. rising rents forced the owner to close shop. customers and volunteers said it was a truly unique place to take

begin this morning for the supreme court nominee. they will get under way in just about one hour at 6:30 our time. >> number two, the search continues for the hit and run rr driver caught on camera running over two kids in san jose and then taking off. the victim, a boy and a girl, are recovering. police say the suspect vehicle is a newer four-door white honda civic. >> number three, former 49er colin kaepernick is at the center of nike's new campaign commemorating the 30th anniversary of the slogan just do it. some on social media say they will boycott the company because of it. >> number four, tropical storm gordon picking up speed and could hit louisiana and mississippi as a category-1 hurricane today. they're warning of a life-threatening storm surge up to five feet in some areas. >> we'll take a greater look at that with live doppler 7 tracking gordon right now. as far as our weather at home, a little different than yesterday. more sunshine, a little warmer, and the air should be a little cleaner even though we have an air quality advisory for some

around three miles, the visibility its consider creating. so far that's good. you can see it hovering over san francisco from the exploratorium camera at pier 15. mid to upper 50s. we'll start to see a separation at noon from yesterday because we'll see the sunshine quicker and we'll have lighter breezes and a little warmer weather as we head into the afternoon hours. comfortable evenings on the way with 50s at the coast, 60s around the bay, and 70s inland. seems a little congested on the roads this morning. >> oh, yeah, it sure is. everyone heading back to work and school today. southbound 680 definitely filling in in walnut creek. a lot of folks hitting the brakes around north main street, north of the 24 split. no blocking issues along that stretch, and mostly clear there for most of the east bay, but the drive times are filling in. all the way up to one hour, four minutes, westbound five 80 tracy to dublin. antioch to concord at 18, and from the north bay, that looks great, san rafael to san francisco in the green at 17 minutes. >> thanks.

happening this morning, in just about one hour at 6:30 a.m., supreme court confirmation hearings are set to begin for judge brett kavanaugh. >> the showdown over his seat on the high court has already begun, and emily rau is live in washington for us with the latest on the outrage from democrats. >> good morning, jessica and reggie. you're right. those hearings get started at 9:30 washington time, and a lot of senators are very eager to start questioning judge kavanaugh because he could have some major influence in the supreme court for decades to come. as federal judge brett kavanaugh rounds out his intense preparation for this week's hearings, senate democrats are already making their case that the white house is withholding key information about kavanaugh's record. already, some 400,000 documents have been released, but it's the 100,000 from kavanaugh's time as a close aide to president george w. bush that democrats want. senator chuck schumer tweeting

late monday, the senate was just given an additional 42,000 pages of kavanaugh documents the night before his hearing. this underscores just how absurd the process is. in response, republicans on the judiciary committee saying the team will be able to go through the latest batch in short order. >> he was very explicit in terms of what he wanted in a nominee. >> democrats are expected to grill the 53-year-old about his views on roe v. wade and whether kavanaugh would work to overturn it. and a new abc news/"washington post" poll that just came out this morning says 6 in 10 americans would like to see judge kavanaugh publicly share his opinion on abortion before he is confirmed. and as for whether or not americans support kavanaugh as the next pick, the poll said that americans are split. in washington, emily rau, abc 7 news. >> emily, thank you. >> we'll take a closer look at

that poll emmy mentioned. it finds the public evenly divided on judge kavanaugh's nomination, and i want to show you the numbers here. more than 1,000 people who participated in the poll last week say 38% of them surveyed say the senate should confirm kavanaugh. 39% say the senate should not confirm him. 23% had no opinion. and at the heart of the controversial issue is kavanaugh's ambiguous stance on abortion. 59% of people surveyed said the judge should publicly state his opinion. and 31% said he should not. 10% had no opinion. >> san jose police hope surveillance video will lead them to the driver who hit two kids on their bikes. you'll see the white honda civic come up to the intersection and you'll see the kids on the bikes. the driver hits them, backed up, and then a moment later continues driving. this happened last monday at cotyl road in south san jose. police are still looking for

that white four-door honda. witnesses say there were three people, possibly teenagers, inside. the two children were hurt, but they are expected to recover. developing this morning from plaster county where a wildfire has forced evacuations in the tahoe national forest. >> the north fire started late yesterday afternoon near imground gap. several nearby campgrounds were evacuated. traffic was very heavy due to labor day and officials were asking drivers to avoid interstate 80. 650 acres have burned so far, and officials say the fire is spreading aggressively. additional aircraft to help fight the fire will arrive today. this morning there's new controversy swirling around former 49er colin kaepernick. >> he's back in the headlines and this time for being one of the faces for nike's latest ad campaign. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is at the nike store in san francisco. amy. >> hi, good morning, jessica. the question will be will sales of nike stock take a hit.

nike stock is down in premarket trading. we will be watching when the market opens. here is the ad. it says believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything. with a picture of colin kaepernick. reaction is strong online. one man posted a video of himself burning his nike shoes. while serena williams posted her support. here is reaction from the streets of san francisco. >> beautiful. it's exactly what it stands for. i mean, sacrificing his own job to believe in something he stands for. >> colin kaepernick set off a national debate two years ago when he first kneeled during the national anthem before a football game to protest police brutality against african-americans. he has been out of work for the last your and he's suing the nfl, accusing the league of conspiring against him because of the protests. even president trump weighed in at the time. he says he's against the kneeling during the anthem. he has not tweeted this morning about this new nike ad. i'm keeping an eye on his twitter feed for you this

morning. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. a bay area man who drowned while swimming in stanislas county was not wearing a life jacket. that's according to the sheriff's department. deputies say the 26-year-old man was trying to swim across the woodward reservoir with his brothers yesterday just before noon. he started to struggle and went underwater. a dive team found his body around 5:00 last night. the sunnyvale man was on a holiday weekend camping trip with family. >> developing news on tropical storm gordon. the coast on alert. it could hit louisiana and mississippi as a category-1 hurricane today. you're watching video of the storm drenching parts of south florida yesterday. people living along the coast are not taking any chances. >> i don't want to see another hurricane like katrina at all. >> i went to sam's, bought a bunch of water and stuff for my family. other than that, letting all my

employees know to kind of prepare. because you don't know what's going to happen. >> the national hurricane center is warning of a life-threatening storm surge. up to five feet in some areas. forecasters say gordon could dump up to eight inches of rain. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let me say right now, this will not be a katrina. that's easy to say because that was probably a once in a lifetime storm, at least for new orleans. two reasons why. the storm is much weaker and also they spent billions of dollars rebuilding the levees around new orleans, and right now, gordon is just a tropical storm with 65-mile-per-hour winds. you can see all the rain in the overnight hours was mainly over water. so far, a pretty dry storm outside of what fell yesterday in florida. now, tonight through tomorrow morning, it will come possibly right ashore near gulfport. that puts new orleans on the southern edge, which is actually the weaker part of the storm. then it heads up into arkansas where that seven to ten inches of rain could cause some flooding. also in mississippi and northern louisiana where you can see the heaviest of the track of rain

will fall. back here at home, wouldn't it be nice to get rain once in a while? not that time of year for us. 61 in redwd city. 60 in menlo park. everybody else in the mid to upper 50s. hayward and fremont thib 60s. the rest of us in the mid to upper 50s. 72 in san jose, i think that's a mistake. here's a look at the san mateo bridge. on the roads today, spotty fog across the north bay. mist at the coast. ferry ride, we have lighter breezes today. no small craft advisory, and mass transit, a summer spread once again with 60s att the coast and 90 inland. san francisco, we start off in the 50s with mist near the coast. we'll see the sun break out around noon. never completely getting rid of the clouds, though, as you can see in the afternoon hours. we'll hang out in the low to mid 6s, and a quick look at the east bay valleys where temperatures will be at least in the mid to upper 80s. i want to bring alexis in because it's traffic season. >> oh, yeah. >> the tuesday after labor day,

always busy. you're not disappointed in what we see. >> no, we're definitely delivering in the traffic department today. so yeah, if you enjoy those summertime light volumes or maybe just even a long holiday weekend, sorry, back to reality today. as everyone is heading back to work and school, and those bay bridge metering lights on quite early, 5:19. we have not had any blocking issues. just a lot of folks hitting the road early. you're using fast track, you'll have a delay. if you're using the carpool lanes. those are the only ones cruising through without issues. no further delays into san francisco. we have one new issue in the tri-valley. southbound 680 before sunol boulevard, a two-car crash, sounds pretty minor. no injuries. it's off on the shoulder but we have delays approaching the scene. eastbound 84 east of 680, wi have a crash off on the shoulder. seeing some onlooker delay on the westbound side. definitely some early delays if you're traveling through the

center in pleasanton to a psychiatric facility in san leandro yesterday morning. we're told she got upset, jumped out of the ambulance. this happen on the connector ramp between interstates 580 and 680. >> the patient got out of all of the restraints, overcome. and pushed out of the way the attendant in back of the ambulance. and went and opened the locked doors of the ambulance and exited the ambulance. >> according to the chp, two cars swerved out of the way. then a third car struck her and she died at the scene. >> san francisco leaders and health advocates are pushing for governor brown to sign a bill that would allow san francisco to become the first city in the u.s. to open safe injection sites. last week, the state legislature passed the bill to create a three-year pilot program. also last week, we got a look at what a safe injection site would look like here. the site would provide supplies,

education, and resources but not drugs. the governor has until the end of month to sign the bill. >> also today, a north bay school district with a controversial name that some say references the confederacy will consider a name change. dixie school district is located in san rafael. critics of the name say dixie is a reference to the confederacy and slavery. the board has previously declined to change the name. several community members pushing for the change plan to address the school board tonight. nasa has a challenge for you. come up with new tech that used carbon dioxide to make stuff. >> yeah, nasa is dreaming big, and they're thinking about how humans can live on mars. it's a planet where the air is 95% carbon dioxide. scientists want to know how to use carbon dioxide to recover oxygen for people to breathe, cnvert solid waste into usable products, and grow food on the red planet. and that's it. no big deal, right? the new technology could also help us on earth in the midst of

mist as you get closer to the coast this morning. faster sunshine today, slightly warmer, especially inland. minor cooling the next couple days. maybe 2 to 4 degrees as the sea breeze tries to take over once again. a pretty quiet pattern through the weekend. right now, i have been watching the fog in petaluma, still the visibility at three miles per hour. good news there. let's take a look at temperatures. wide range across the south bay. we'll start with the warmest, gilroy at 94. ten degrees cooler in san jose at 84. and then 78 today in milpitas. we have about 73 in santa cruz with afternoon sunshine. 73 to about 77, that's the spread on the peninsula until you get to millbrae, about 70. while it won't be a fast breeze coming through the san bruno gap, enough to keep you cooler than everybody else. look at the lack of sunshine along the coast. 69sausalito. 81 in san rafael low to mid 80s through the north bay valleys. cloverdale and up to ukiah, low

to mid 90s.stop, and it's our warmest, low to mid 90s in the east bay valleys. my accuweather seven-day forecast will have lows in the 50s once again just about every day. temperatures will drop about 2 to 4 degrees in the bay and inland and we'll regain those friday, saturday, sunday, and monday, nothing too extreme. >> so far for traffic, we're not looking at anything too extreme, although we have much heavier volumes than of course yesterday and of course most of the summer as well. things are filling in. really one of our only nonblocking issues but it is a crash, southbound 680 before sunol boulevard. no injuries, off on the shoulder, but the backup continues to grow toward 580 if you're coming through the dublin, pleasanton area. south bay, you're looking great. the inbound side of the traffic heading toward us is starting to increase. we're starting to see a little stop and go traffic, but it's not terrible. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, 1:07. you're definitely in the red out of the central valley. southbound 680, dublin to
