at columbus parkway, just getting reports of a motorcycle down. it sounds like this crash is fully contained to the shoulder, and i'm not seeing much backup approaching that, but emergency crews are not there yet. i'll keep a close eye on that one. we could have lanes taken away once they arrive. slow past that into vallejo and beyond at 24 miles per hour. and check out walnut creek, this commute has really filled in on southbound 680. nothing blocking, just everyone heading back to work and school after the long holiday weekend. next traffic update at around 6:10. >> developing news in south bay. police searching for the person who hit two kids on bikes and then took off. >> the scary incident in south san jose caught on surveillance video. an abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at san jose police headquarters for us. hi, matt. >> good morning, jessica and reggie. three people were in that car. witnesses say they looked like teenagers. neighbors say that's no excuse for them to take off after hitting two young kids on their bikes. take a look at the video of the

hit-and-run. this was on monday, august 27th, in the afternoon. you can see a 13-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl on their bikes approaching the crosswalk in south san jose. a white four-door honda civic rolls through the stop sign and hits the two kids. they go down. the driver reverses, makes a left turn, and takes off. a neighbor says her gardener witnessed the crash. >> i heard him. he said stop, stop! he was saying, trying to make them stop, so you know, but the boys did not stop. they just back up and make a quick left turn. >> now, the family of the young boy say he has a broken wrist, sprained fingers and bumps and bruises. nay say the girl suffered a concussion. both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. police say three people were inside that car, and of course, police are looking for them. reporting live here in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. a recent lee released pennsylvania grand jury report on widespread sex abuse by

catholic priests revealed a bay area case. according to our media partner the mercury news, the abuse allegedly happened 18 years ago at the st. alucious retreat in los gatos. it involves reverend ben addict vanter putin. he was part of a traditionalist priest society at the time. around the year 2000, he was accused of molesting a teenage girl and trying to abuse another girl. the society quickly send vander putin to its headquarters in europe and reported him to the vatican. vander putin did not respond to attempts to reach him. >> developing news in plaster county where a 650-acre fire is burning in the tahoe national forest. officials say the north fire is spreading aggressively and evacuations are in place around immigrant gap, which is about 30 miles west of truckee. it's recommended you don't travel on interstate 80 in that area if you can avoid it. here's a live picture of the fire from bald mountain in

eldorado county. the fire was reported late yesterday afternoon and surprised people enjoying the area's campgrounds. >> they were screaming, abd get out. i started freaking out. i said let's go back. our baby's there. >> additional aircraft to help fight the fire will arrive today. >> friends are mourning a former bay area man who was killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan over the weekend. >> the man moved to union city from afghanistan to escape the taliban in 2015. the letter pleading for asylum in the u.s. they issued him a death penalty for refusing to join the taliban. he had to hide his family as a result. friends say after his immigration hearing was postponed, he moved back to afghanistan last year to be with his wife and four children who were in danger. >> it was a suicide mission for him. >> i told him he shouldn't go back because i knew that he was receiving a lot of threats. >> he died after the helicopter he was in crashed and caught fire shortly after taking off

from an afghan military base. friends say they do not believe reports that the crash was they fear a bomb was planted in the helicopter. they say he would still be alive if the rest of his family had been granted asylum to come to the u.s. >> the ceo of usa gymnastics is resigning effective immediately. the board of directors released cary perry's formal announcement an hour ago. she took over last year after the previous ceo resigned in light of the larry nassar sexual abuse case. former olympians and current national team members have criticized perry for not communicating efforts to make the sport safer. the board released a statement saying it's been making the recommended changed. they include amending the organization's bylaws and the appointment of an entirely new board of directors. the board says usa gymnastics has been focused on athlete safety and wellbeing and insuring that programs and protocols are in place to prevent all forms of abuse.

>> police paid at least 75 arres ancisco marriott yesterd. local workers from union 2 staged the progress. they're upset in the lack of progress over contract talks. they deal expired august 15th. local 2 represents employees at seven san francisco marriott-owned hotels. we reached out to marriott and have not yet heard back. >> a palo alto man who was recently released from prison in nepal is looking forward to a fresh start back here in the bay area. >> wolf price founded the organization, within the four walls, which educates and shelters young women and girls. the 31-year-old filmmaker was working on a documentary. his humanitarian work got cut short in april when police arrested him on marijuana polic were planted. his mom flew to kathmandu and spent six weeks working to get her son released. they returned to the u.s. sunday

we're back at 6:15. an iraq war veteran on a mission to bring awareness to veteran suicides just finished her 4,000-mile bike journey that went from virginia to right here in the bay area. sarah lee enlisted in the army when she was 17. she served for eight years including a 14-month deployment to iraq. she lost friends to suicide and was contemplating taking her own life. but then, she saw a bike for sale, and she said she chose life over death by purchasing it. she embarked on this coast to coast journey last year in virginia. >> the generosity and kindness i experienced on this mind-blowing. and we're not as divided as we think we are.

here's a look at the cloud cover. watch as we head to noon. still a few clouds along the east bay shoreline. for the most part, a lot of sunshine and then quickly after that, yeah, just total full-on sunshine along the bay except for that finger of fog roll across the golden gate during the afternoon hours. the coast, yeah, you'll be sockednshine, but that's about . widespread in the south bay. 78 in milpitas. 84 at san jose. 94 in gilroy. much narrower on the peninsula. 70, millbrae. 77 in redwood city and palo alto. 61 to 63 along the east -- should say along the coast, and 66 in downtown san francisco. mainly low to mid 80s through the north bay. farther north, you'll start to get 90s. a lot of comfort along the east bay shoreline with 73 to 78 your spread. as we move to the east bay valleys, possibly air conditioning weather, low to mid 90s. a couple degrees cooler for wednesday and thursday as the sea breeze ramps up once again. when it backs off, temperatures will fall back to average levels friday through the weekend. have a good one. here's alexis.

start asking questions of judge kavanaugh because he could have a major impact in the supreme court for decades to come. as federal judge brett kavanaugh rounds out his intense preparation for this week's hearings, senate democrats are already making their case that the white house is withholding key information about kavanaugh's record. already, some 400,000 documents have been released, but it's the 100,000 from kavanaugh's time as a close aide to president george w. bush that democrats want. senator chuck schumer tweeting late monday, the senate was just given an additional 42,000 pages of kavanaugh documents the night before his hearing. this underscores just how absurd the process is. in response, republicans on the judiciary committee saying the team will be able to go through the latest batch in short order. >> he was very explicit in terms of what he wanted in a supreme court nominee. >> democrats are expected to

responding to the kavanaugh hearings. she's the top democrat on the senate judiciary committee. here's what he had to say about 30 minutes ago. >> this entire process has cast a cloud over judge kavanaugh's nomination. democrats strongly object to moving forward when so much of his record remains secret. >> senator feinstein ended with saying that democrats are going to the kavanaugh hearings under protest. >> and now to developing news in plaster county this morning. a wildfire is forcing evacuations in the tahoe national forest. the north fire started late yesterday afternoon near immigrant gap. several nearby campgrounds have been evacuated, and traffic was very heavy due to labor day. at last check, the fire has burned about one square mile, but officials say it is still spreading. additional aircraft to help fight the flames are expected to arrive today. there this morning, new controversy surrounding former 49er colin kaepernick.

he's back in the headlines. this time for being one of the faces for nike's latest ad campaign. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at the nike store in san francisco. good morning, amy. >> hi, good morning, reggie. i'm checking nike's stock right now, and it is down since the market just opened a few minutes ago. that's the first financial reaction we have seen to this ad campaign. let me show you the ad. a big picture of colin kaepernick and across it, it says "believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything." there has been plenty of reaction online. one man posted himself on social media showing himself burning his nike shoes. serena williams made a post saying she was proud of the ad. we checked in with a professor at san francisco state who says she thinks this will boost nike's image. >> it's, you know, a continuation of a really strong history of athlete activism that nike is now inserting itself

into. >> remember, colin kaepernick was the first to kneel during the national anthem at a football game. that was two years ago. he was protesting police brutality against african-americans. he's been out of a job in the nfl for more than a year. he is suing the nfl because of it. this ad with nike is a multi-year deal for him. this marks nike's 30th anniversary of its just do it campaign. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. a bay area man who drowned while swimming in stanislas county was not wearing a life jacket. that is according to the sheriff's department. deputies say the 26-year-old man was trying to swim across the woodward reservoir with his brothers yesterday just before noon. he then started to struggle and went underwater. a dive team found his body about 5:00 last night. the sunnyvale man was on a holiday weekend camping trip

with family. >> developing news. the gulf coast on high alert this morning as tropical storm gordon barrels toward land. it passed by south florida yesterday. and it could become a category-1 hurricane today. this morning, there is a state of emergency in louisiana and mississippi. schools are closed in parts of three states. and people living along the gulf coast aren't taking any chances. >> i don't want to see another hurricane like katrina, at all. >> i went to sam's, bought a bunch of water and stuff for my family. and other than that, just kind of letting all my employees know to kind of prepare because you don't know what's going to happen. >> the national hurricane center is warning of a life-threatening storm surge up to five feet in some areas. forecasters say gordon could dump up to eight inches of rain. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's dig deeper into gordon. you see that's good news. it gives it less time to develop over that warm ocean water. nearly 90 degrees, the water

temperature where it is right now. notice that the radar returns are not wrapping around. you do not see a strong eye at all. so it's going to hit, yes. it looks like gulfport, biloxi, straight on during the darkness of the evening and overnight hours. new orleans will be on the south side of this, which means you'll get a little less in the way of rainfall and storm surge. then it heads up into the arklamiss and up to northwest arkansas where it could cause flooding because there's potential where you see the magenta of 7 to 10 inches of rain, especially in arkansas as the storm slows there. back here, a little mist near the coast. that's about it. mainly cloudy elsewhere with mid to upper 50s not only in the east bay valleys but pretty much everywhere except for hayward and mountain view at 61, and los gatos at 64 degrees. if you're out and about, quick look at your commute planner. there's spotty fog in the north bay, otherwise, lighter breezes and temperatures in the 60serpre th lt much b presng

n'it? summer unofficially over, i would say it's officially over as far as your commute is concerned. zooming into a couple slow areas on our traffic maps. we have known about a car fire for a while in the pittsburg area. westbound highway 4 got cnfirmation from chp that a lane is blocked due to the situation. the far right lane, lane number five, is blocked for emergency crews. it sounds like the actual vehicle that caught fire is off on the shoulder, but you're extra heavy getting out of antioch and stop and go through the bay point area, over to concord as well. this is an earlier problem. this has cleared on the nimitz, but southbound 880 before mowry, we had a disabled charter bus blocking one of the middle lanes. they were able to get it clear today the shoulder. residual delays, 11 miles per hour and 21 miles per hour. bay bridge commute, definitely busier, too. we'll look at that next. >> thank you. are you in the market for a new iphone? why waiting a couple weeks could save you money.

rolls through the stop sign and hits the two kids. they go down. the driver reverses, makes a left turn and takes off. the family of the young boy says he has a broken wrist, sprained fingers and bumps and bruise. they say the girl suffered a concussion. both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. police say three people were inside the car. witnesses say they looked like teenagers. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. san francisco leaders and health advocates are pushing for governor brown to sign a bill that would allow san francisco to become the first city in the u.s. to open safe injection sites. last week, the state legislature passed the bill to create a three-year pilot program. also last week, we got a look at what a safe injection site would look like. the site would supply -- provide supplies, i should say, education as well as resources, but it would not supply any drugs. the governor has uil the end ofhe month to sign the bill. >> also today, a north bay school district with a controversial name that some say references the confederacy will consider a name change.

dixie school district is located in san rafael. critics of the name say dixie is a reference to the confederacy and slavery. the board has previously declined to change the name. several community members pushing for that change plan to address the school board tonight. >> new overnight, someone vandalized bill cosby's hollywood walk of fame star. you can see the words "serial rapist" over his na police say it happened some time last night. in april, cosby was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in his home in 2004. dozens of women have also acc e accused him of sexual misconduct. his star was vandalized again about four years ago. now your morning money report. if you're thinking about buying a new iphone, wait a second. >> apple is expected to introduce new additions of the phone later this month. after the new models are revealed, analysts say apple will put current models on sale the last week of september. and while you should wait to buy a new iphone. if you are thinking of selling
