and good morning, america. hope you had a good labor day. now it is back to school, back to work. >> yes, it is. i'm thinking of my family and friends down in the mississippi gulf coast. >> exactly. we want to get right to that robin, get right to that tropical storm that is threatening the gulf coast. take a live look at the radar. the south is bracing for gordon which is on the verge of becoming a hurricane. >> so here's what we know right now. governors in louisiana and mississippi have already declared states of emergency. school districts there and in florida have closed down for the day and several airlines are now offering travel waivs at major airports in the storm zone. let's go right to ginger who's starting us off with the latest. good morning, ginger. >> good morning. 50 to 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts were found in southeast florida when this thing moved through, and now you see it in the gulf of mexico making its way. impacts should be felt in a couple hours along the gulf coast. by tonight it will make landfall. likely as a category 1 hurricane, somewhere there near

biloxi. we want to keep that in the region most impacted because especially the heavy rain will fall east of it. you can see up to 12 inches. 75 plus-mile-per-hour wind gusts and three to five-feet of storm surge. michael? >> thank you, ginger. now to abc's steve osunsami in biloxi, mississippi, where the storm could make landfall. good morning to you, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. we are on the beach in front of the biloxy yacht club, and there are no boats here. they moved them out in advance of the storm. they've also closed schools and are offering sandbags to families who need them. for the eastern gulf coast the first major storm of the season is on the way, and his name is gordon. by the time the storm makes land fall, most likely along the mississippi coast line, it's expected to be a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of up to 75 miles an hour. already the storm rained all over their holiday weekend in south florida. on labor day more than 4 inches of rain.

all that water and the more than 50-mile-an-hour winds kept miami's gorgeous beaches empty. authorities posted rip current warnings along the beach and as always, there were risky souls ignoring them. police were urging drivers to stay off flooded roads. >> the roads are flooded. you have to drive super slow. >> you don't take any of these lightly. even though it may not be a hurricane. >> reporter: now mississippi and louisiana are declaring emergencies ahead of the storm. >> i'm encouraging everyone to be prudent, to be cautious. >> reporter: families trying to decide this morning what to do. get water or take their chances. last year mississippi was dealing with hurricane nate that brought 85-mile-an-hour winds and 30-foot waves flooding biloxi casinos. >> the storm surge completely engulfed the first floor here. >> reporter: all of these storms have particular characteristics and the one that people here are

the most concerned about is the rain. they're expecting river flooding and possibly flash flooding as well. michael. >> all right, thank you so much, steve. we'll go back to ginger and, ginger, the storm isn't just threatening the gulf coast. its effects will be felt through the midwest. >> that's what i'm most concerned about is the midland flooding from the storm. it's racing. that's a good thing for the gulf coast. fast means good when it comes to rain but will end up coming in contact with a stationary front that will keep the low, keeping the tropical moisture like a funnel, like a tunnel of tropical moisture that's going to drop into places like kansas city up to 4, even 6 inches of rain. so this is something we'll talk about from arkansas up through the midwest through the week, george. okay. thanks so much, ginger. we go to washington where the confirmation battle for president trump's supreme court nominee begins today. judge brett kavanaugh in the spotlight just weeks ahead of the midterm election. the battle could shape the court

>> reporter: blasting over 100,000 documents, and overnight, a document dump at the 11th hour. senate minority leader chuck schumer tweeting, the senate was just given an additional 42,000 pages of kavanaugh documents the night before his confirmation hearing. this underscores how absurd this process is. >> what are they trying to hide? >> reporter: they are trying to figure out what role kavanaugh might play in investigations of president trump such as the mueller probe. >> he chose the candidate who he thought would best protect him from the mueller investigation. >> reporter: but the real issue is how kavanaugh's confirmation could reshape the supreme court for decades, cementing a 5-4 conservative majority, replacing the swing vote of the retired justice antho

with a huge advantage. >> now george, it's just one poll, but if these numbers hold, this is a disaster for republicans. a 14-point advantage in terms of who people say they will vote for, a 14-point advantage for the democrats, but also more troublesome for republicans, democrats are more enthusiastic and say they are more likely to vote, and independent voters are fleeing republicans in droves. >> and just to put that number in context, when republicans won dozens of house seats in 2010, and democrats in 2006, their numbers were far lower than this. >> in every one of the swing elections, the advantage was less for the party that won. >> we have to talk about this tweet from the president. a stunning tweet in a universe of stunning tweets from the president attacking his own u justice department for prosecuting. >> they endorsed him, and the third member of congress to endorse him was jeff sessions. he is first of all wrong on the

>> it's, you know what, it's really overwhelming. in a good way. but i meaning it's -- i kind of feel like that character in that woody allen movie that wakes up one morning and he is a celebrity all of a sudden and he has no idea where it came from. it came out of nowhere. i really want to thank everybody out there, family, friends, hollywood, community and the general public for the incredible support, the amazing support and positivity that they've shown for me. it really is -- it's quite astounding and encouraging. >> really turned the story around. did you also feel that those initial reports were trying to job shame you? >> i did. you know, when i first saw the picture -- by the way they photoshopped those pictures, by the way. >> of course, the stain. >> you know i don't look that bad. but i was actually preparing for my role as fall staff in a production of henry iv set in a grocery store.

but i mean i was really devastated, but it lasted -- it was -- the period of devastation was so short because so shortly after that, the responses -- my wife and i started to read these responses from, like, literally all over the world of support, and so fortunately the shame part didn't last very long. it hurt but then it's just -- it's amazing. so -- >> you know why, geoffrey, because people just like us, you got to make ends meet. you got to do whatever you need to do for your family. is that what you were doing? >> exactly. it got to a point where i've been teaching, acting, directing for 30 plus years, but, you know, got to a point where, you know, it just -- it just didn't add up enough. you gotta do what you gotta do. i wanted a job where i could have some flexibility. try to stay in the business. i didn't advertise that i was, you know, at trader joe's, not that i was ashamed of it but i

didn't want the entertainment community to say he's not pursuing acting anymore. i felt i had to be careful about that. but -- >> how long did you work there? did people recognize you? >> i worked there 15 months before this whole thing happened and this all broke. people recognized me every day and they were very cool about it. sometimes too cool like there would be like, oh, you work here. i'm, like, yeah. oh, cool. it was no big deal. really, that's no big deal at all? >> have you been getting any calls now, acting jobs? >> you know what, not really. there have been some hints, interest and stuff. you know what, honestly, i actually -- i know this might sound weird, i wouldn't feel comfortable getting acting jobs from this event. you know what i mean? i wouldn't mind getting auditions. i don't mind if people call me in to try out for things due to what's happened, but i actually

this weekend's horrifying boat accident on the colorado river is speaking out exclusively to abc news. >> we shouldn't be alive because it was that bad. sorry. >> reporter: taylor was celebrating labor day weekend with family and friends along the california/arizona border. she says she was on one of the two boats involved in the deadly accident. >> i look up and, next i see the boat, the other boat and next thing you know i'm in the water. the current was so strong, it was moving me around and all i could think about is get air. i don't know -- i can't tell you how long i was underwater but i know that it was long enough to where i couldn't breathe anymore. i actually breathed in some water. all i told myself was, taylor, swim to the top to get some air in and i swam to the top. >> two boats hit head on at about 50 miles per hour in the river. near the topock restaurant. >> reporter: the collision saturday night claiming the life of at least one person.

yesterday but now it's in the gulf and just starting to rain in port st. joe, florida, so the panhandle starting to feel the impact. in the next couple of hours, that will intensify and not till tonight will we see landfall. so that will happen tonight overnight into early tomorrow morning. a fast-moving storm but could still see 8 to 12 inches. that will be on the high end of rain. 75 plus-mile-per-hour gusts. storm surge of three to five feet. if i tell you anything today, note this, the inland impact of rainfall and flash flooding may end up being the big story because it's going to come across the gulf, not to say that it's not impressive there and have to be watching out for it but it ends up interacting with a front and that low sticks around. the tropical moisture almost acts like a funnel and have had so many communities from iowa up through wisconsin, down into missouri that have been tortured with so much rain the last couple weeks. you add this on top and through saturday we'll talk about this storm affecting a lot of the country. robin. >> and speed really has a factor. a factor in the storm, isn't it? >> absolutely does.

nick, you went through your journey. it ended in -- you proposed, but it didn't work out. so what advice would you have for colton to do something so private in such a public way? >> well, i think to that point i think you kind of have to let that go. you have to be willing to kind of, you know, be yourself, even though it's very public. and you just -- it sounds cliche but be true to yourself and be decisive and very up front because you really want to make the right decision and, you know, try to hold back those tears a little bit and you'll be all right. [ applause ] >> so, being that you've been on two iterations of this, do you think the cameras will disappear and you'll let go and find that special woman? >> i know they do because they did for me on "bachelorette" and "bachelor in paradise." after day three or four they go away. >> i tell you right now, man. your life is changing and we'll see it and you'll be here a lot. trust me.

me, you know, whatever it may be because you play quarterback or whatever it is, you may be on the cover of wheaties, but the reality is there's nothing like life. when you think about these young kids who have cancer or are overcoming cancer or -- it's a tough experience and every room you walk into, it's different. and i think about kids like milton wright, the 19-year-old african-american kid who had cancer three different times at 8, 12 and 18 years old and i'll never forget seeing him walk out of the hospital with no more cancer. those are the days you look toward to and it's just been really, really cool to go there since my rookie year. i'm going there today so that will be cool as well. >> we love that, russell. you not only talk about it but you actually do that work that you do talk about and tuesdays for football players are tough because that's your only day off for everyone who didn't understand that. you do so many things well.

we are back. a challenge for many parents, how to get your kids to focus on schoolwork when they won't stop playing the online sensation fortnite. up to 125 million users right now. some parents turning to support groups for advice. diane macedo has the story. >> reporter: it's the new phenomenon hitting the internet. dozens of facebook support groups to help parents deal with their children's fortnite obsession as kids go back to school. >> my son plays probably several hours a day at this point and, you know, with school starting tomorrow the whole -- that whole plan is going to change because it has to. >> reporter: one group iparent 101 fortnite educates parents so they know what the game is, how it works and how they can manage

their kids' relationship with it. >> reporter: i refer to parents as digital immigrants and our kids are digital natives. i created the group to give parents a safe place to come in and talk without judgment. >> reporter: parents are sharing their fortnite concerns. one says their son thinks the game is better than going outside. another asks what to do if their child sneaks to play it in the middle of the night. >> i feel like the group i created is very important to give parents that safe place to come in and get support with very specific tips. >> reporter: experts say these facebook groups help to provide a different perspective on parenting. >> it is such a relief to connect with other parents who are struggling with the very same questions that you are and it can really free you up to focus on what to do next instead of sitting around and worrying about what you've done wrong. >> reporter: parents say that perspective helps them remember they're not alone. >> when you post something within this group, you really know that the people that are there are really interested in what the subject matter is. so that's been really helpful to just kind of be connected and

[ applause ] talk a bit more about these online support groups and what people should look for. >> well, you know, online support groups can be a great tool for parents who are parenting in isolation away from their friends and family. when you join a facebook support group, it's really good to look at it with a critical eye. who is running it? is it an expert or a parent with a shared experience? how will their message benefit you? can you provide questions? can you ask questions and what kind of feedback are you getting? is it positive or is it a forum for parents to be attacked when they share? >> you're not just an expert on this topic. you're living it with your son.

he likes his fortnite. what have you done? >> yeah, our son is one of those kids who is obsessed with fortnite and loves the game. he can play all day. during the school year, there is no screen time monday through friday. >> none? >> none. not one minute of screen time. unless it's for a school assignment but no gaming so friday after school that's important. we were worried screen time was affecting his attention span. his focus and those are concerns that parents have. >> the important thing that some parents struggle with is, if you set a rule like that you have to stick to it. >> you have to and there are other rules parents should follow. we have to know everyone he is playing with online. i know them in the real world. i've met the kids and their parents and also you want to make sure that you understand the game. my husband sort of is playing when he first got interested so we have an understanding of what he's doing and what he's spending hours on. >> the game is violent. how do you know when it's appropriate for a child? >> if you go to a lot of sites they tell you 11, 12, 13 are the ideal ages to play a game like fortnite. we were a family that chose to

let him play earlier because we felt he was ready to play that kind of game so really is up to the parent, what they think is best for their child. >> if you set limits like this you will get pushback. >> of course. no child is going to want -- wants to be told they can only play an hour. but you are the parent. you have to remember you are the boss and you have to set these rules and can try to explain why you don't want them to play all day. they're still not going to understand and be angry. the point is, stick to the rules and be consistent and it benefits your kids. >> i'll call you for some backbone tonight. let's go to ginger. >> let's get out here. these are my ladies from 'lil n -- illinois. we were just talking. it's a little hot out here, a little sticky. that is going to keep on so if you all are staying because you're here for your birthday, happy birthday by the way, that is keeping us in advisories from west
