5:19 pm
the so-called gig economy is upon us. millions of workers in today's economy work as freelancers either for their own companies or for others. the big potential downfall of such work is that many are working without a safety net. with limited health insurance, no sick pay, or paid vacation. however, some companies, sensing an opportunity, are starting to emerge. one such service is called trupo, which offers disability insurance on a sliding scale. the more you pay, the better coverage you get. rates range from $20 to $50 a month. trupo is the brain child of sarah horowitz, she founded the new york-based free lancers union. it offers health insurance for independent contractors for years. the idea came after holding focus groups with freelancers who say the lack of any short-term disability meant they were living on the edge of uncertainty, bankruptcy and possibly moving in with family or even their parents.
5:20 pm
using trupo, freelancers can get coverage for up to half of their usual monthly income. right now options are limited. but large insurance companies like prudential have started to look at the freelance market and explore product offerings to freelancers in the future. if you're looking at this, it will take real work on your part, compare plans and pricings now and you need to keep checking in. more and more insurance companies are getting into the market and that could mean a better deal for you down the road but you wouldn't know it if you didn't keep checking. >> a little effort. onto the weather forecast. >> now your accuweather forecast with sandhya patel. >> our workweek, and back to school, off to a nice start, good evening everyone, live doppler 7 showing you the coast is pretty much covered by fog right now. we are tracking active weather south of lake tahoe, numerous thunderstorms flaring up, over 500 lightning strikes. those storms have been dumping some pretty heavy rain.
