evacuations at an intense rate. >> here is a look at where it's burning in shasta county. north of redding and not far interest the shasta trinity national forest. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. abc reporter lilian kim is tracking the spread of this fire. >> the video coming from shasta county is terrifying. one woman on interstate 5 posted video of the fire which is spreading fast. they're calling it the delta fire, and the latest video we're getting from an instagram user. she was caught in the middle of the freeway when flames began burning dangerously close to i-5 which is now closed in both directions from 10 miles north of redding to an area four miles south of mt. shasta. the flames broke out this afternoon and so far the fire has exploded to as many as a thousand acres. the shasta that county fire department is conducting evacuations on both sides of the freeway. several motorists have been rescued, and there has been at least one person injured. >> oh my god, i want to go! brandon, we got to get out and

walk. we can't stay right here. look, that side just caught on fire. well cannot stay right here. >> the u.s. forest service has launched a full aircraft and ground response. just in, fire officials say it's grown to 2,000 acres. this fire comes just weeks after the carr fire, which destroyed nearly 1100 homes and killed eight people in the same area. back to you. dan and ama? >> lilian, thank you so much for that update. tonight a cruze police officer is in the hospital after getting hit by a car during a police traffic stop. sky net 7 shows us it happened at broadway and ocean street in santa cruz as one of the officers was stepping out of a black unmarked suv, an unrelated car hit that officer. police did arrest the three suspects who apparently were wanted in alameda county for an undisclosed violation. the driver who hit the officer stayed and cooperated with police. the officer's injuries are not life threatening.

spencer. he died when his single-engine plane crashed while having problems while landing. >> apparently bounced a couple of times. the pilot then elected to perform what's called a go-round, which is adding power and basically performing a takeoff. the airplane was airborne and the witnesses saw it then quickly descend into the water. >> both passengers survived the impact. spencer was flying emission for angle flight west to bring a patient and her mother to lucille packard children's hospital. in july a plane crash killed two men near lake tahoe and left one survivor that man is being released from the hospital with new challenges and brand-new outlook. eric thomas has the story from valley medical center in san jose. >> so we like to focus on what is possible, and we focus on rebuilding lives. >> he has to lean forward and he opsiti t tnsr s head the over. >> maneuvering from a wheelchair to a seat is now part of eric's life, something he's had to learn in weeks of physical

therapy. >> this journey has been quite incredible. >> he is 56. he is the only survivor of this july plane crash near lake tahoe that killed his husband, peter jackson, and their pilot. friends tell us they had just taken off from a nearby airport to take some pictures when the engine developed problems. the impact damaged his spine in two places and caused a severe head injury. >> i don't have any recollection of the -- taking off after that. and you wake up, and you're wondering who you are. >> he underwent at least eight surgeries in a tahoe hospital before being sent to valley medical center for rehab. he had trouble remembering words, putting together sentences, even doing simple math problems. physically, he couldn't move his legs. treatment meant putting him in the hands of a team of doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and mental health specialists. it wasn't always easy. >> it was like okay, here are ag you through hell. >> but every bit paid off in ways he could see and feel.

and that helped him stay positive instead of veering off to a dark place. >> i feel like today i'm in pretty good shape, and i'm ready to go. i feel like i have a second chance at life. and i almost feel like my life is just starting. >> personally, i feel like eric has far exceeded the expectations i had regarding his head injury and his ability to communicate and have insight into his current condition. >> eric is going home today, but there are months of physical therapy ahead of him. the probability is low that he'll ever walk again, but to lead the kind of life he wants to lead, there is still some hard work ahead. in san jose, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> we wish him well. a woman walking to the lafayette bart station in the early morning hours yesterday was attacked at random and almost abducted by strangers in a passing car. now one person has been arrested. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley is live from downtown lafayette with the very latest on this. leslie? >> i'm told a 19-year-old man from pittsburg, jordan wilson,

has been arrested for the attempted abduction, but two other suspects police say are still at large. they say the men approached the woman wearing masks. a woman walking here in the 3500 block of mt. diablo boulevard in the heart of lafayette was heading to an early bart train a few blocks away tuesday morning. police say a dark colored sedan pulled up alongside her at 4:25 a.m., and a suspect wearing a mask grabbed her and tried to pull her into the car. she escape and called for help as the car sped away. >> we have a citizen walking on the street who is approached by strangers and is essentially victimized. and for us, that's a crime that we can't let go unsolved. we've got to put all our resources behind it. and technology was definitely a component. >> lafayette police have an extensive network of surveillance cameras in the area, along with business and home security cameras. >> in this case, it was a camera that helped us identify the car

danger to pedestrians below. the tower is in the newly named east cut neighborhood next to the salesforce transit center. melanie woodrow is live from san francisco with the details on this story. melanie? >> that is the big question tonight. what caused this exterior panel of glass to crack on the 36th floor. building officials say they won't know for certain until they replace the window within the next week and open up the side of the building to get a better look. the leaning, sinking millennium tower has a new problem, a cracked window on the 36th floor. >> this is a window system that is designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. so this is obviously of serious concern. >> the city's department of building inspection took these photos. tom miller, the attorney for the homeowners association said the person who lives in 36b heard a loud pop in the middle of the night over the holiday weekend. it's the outside pane of glass that cracked. >> is that glass going to hold or is it going to be a falling

object? >> the department of building inspection tells abc news an inspector has been through to the site three times. that inspector determined there is no imminent risk to pedestrians below, specifically because the glass is laminated and designed to hold in place even when fractured. the city issued this correction notice, letting the building's 34g9 kn management know they have until friday to issue an report including an evaluation of the repairs needed. miller says a new window has been ordered and will be installed within the week. during the replacement they'll open up the side of the building to investigate what caused the crack. the building's manager sent this notice to residents, saying it's possible the incident is related to other issues in the building. but miller says a seismic expert and structural engineer disagrees. >> he informed us that it appeared not to be related to the performance of the building sinking or tilting. >> as for those problems, the homeowners association president says they are considering alternatives to bring the building up to the highest standard.

on friday. now where is that warmth coming from? water vapor satellite image shows a large warmer, dryer air mass developing offshore, moving generally in our direction. and as the warming starts tomorrow, it will peak in our inland areas and around the bay on friday. and there will be some warmth left over for saturday as well. another cloudy and relatively cool night. low clouds will push far inland. overnight lows generally in the mid- to upper 50s, low 50s in most of the north bay. tomorrow's highs a bit higher than today for sure. upward 80s. inland east bay up to about 80 down south. north bay 80s to santa rosa. 78, san rafael. mainly low 70s around the bay shoreline. quick look at what was tropical storm gordon, now tropical depression gordon. still a threatening storm, even as it weakens, as it's producing drenching rain across much of the southeast and the gulf coast up into the mississippi valley. excessive rainfall and flash flooding are likely through friday in parts of mississippi and arkansas off into parts of

a silicon valley startup that is shutting down leads tonight's bay area business watch. theranos shareholders received an e-mail about the closing. the palo alto-based company started in 2014 with a promise to make blood tests easier and cheaper. months ago the ceo, elizabeth holmes and a colleague were indicted on federal wire fraud charges. the couple knowingly lied about the accuracy and reliability of their products. tesla is being sued by a woman who said she had her model s in autopilot mode when she rear-ended a stopped fire truck at 60 miles an hour. she had minor injuries.

the crash happened in utah in may. the lawsuit alleges that tesla salespeople told her autopilot would ensure the car stopped on its own if something was in its path. this weekend will mark the official end to demolition of the old eastern span of the bay bridge. a pair of foundations from the original 1936 foundations will be imploded on saturday around noon. yes. a little bit of that. this is what it has look and sounded like during previous implosions. we thought caltrans had everything done last november after crews imploded a total of 18 foundations after dismantling the remnants of the old span. three foundations that were purposely left in place to be wa by y bheth by e new parks shoreline. here are renderings. for saturday's implosion, the chp will briefly stop traffic on

october, before the supreme court decides which cases they'll hear next session. and so far republicans have the votes to do it janai norman, abc news, washington. >> and back here now, new at 6:00. it's happened again. thieves targeted another bay area apple store this afternoon. this time it happened in downtown los gatos. sky 7 flew above the store on north santa cruz avenue. police tell us three men stormed into the store, ripped merchandise off the tables and dashed back out the front door. you're now looking at self-of similar crimes inside apple stores in corte madera. they have hit in burlingame and berkeley. police are working to see if the thefts are connected. well, also new at 6:00, presentation high school president and former principle mary miller has resigned after many allegations she mishandled student sexual abuse claims against staff. in a resignation letter to the board, miller says the allegations continue to be a distraction to the school and

she hopes her absence will bring some peace and i a lou the staff to focus on the success of the students. the attorney who represents former students applauds miller's resignation and says true change cannot occur until those responsible for past transgressions are held responsible. changing gender on official documents just got a lot easier in california. two new laws that went into effect this week will alu people to change their gender just by visiting the dmv starting in 2019. people can also change their birth certificate right now by going to the california courts website. before the new laws, officially changing gender required a doctor's approval and required applicants the appear in court. advocate says the difficulty was another difficulty for transgender men and women. >> and that's really important for a myriad of things. applying for a job, getting an apartment, you can imagine all the ways in which people need their identification to match the way they present externally. >> beginning in january, the law

will also allow drivers to easily change their gender on their drivers license. san francisco's mayor announced an ambitious plan today to boost clean energy technology across the city. mayor london breed unveiled the details from the upper terrace of moscone center where crews are installing a massive solar power system. when they're up and rubbing, the panels will give moscone the largest rooftop solar array in the city, producing 20% of the building's power. in marin county, bulldozers are moving some 16 million pounds of soil. but unlike most projects, they're rebuilding as much as tearing down. wayne friedman on the latest effort to keep coho salmon returning and breeding in their native habitat. >> despite its 21st century surroundings, lagunitas creek in marin county remain in more natural times, a functional ecosystem barely surviving as nature intended for steelhead trout and coho salmon.

>> the best in the state and we're talk about 200 nests, so maybe 400 fish. >> saving this habitat had been a two decade project for him at the turtle island restoration network. it is a two-year, $5 million project funded by several state agencies to recreate natural wetlands here. theoretically, it's fairly simple. in wintertime, when heavy rains come and this creek runs fast, the young fish have nowhere to seek refuge. this project provides that. >> they're only one to two inches in size. and when those big storms happen, they just get washed downstream and killed. >> steiner has been a polarizing figure in these parts. environmentalists love him. critics say he is ambitious to a fault. many the past year his plan for the county to buy san geronimo golf club and restore to it parkland for the sake of the fish has led to a local petition for a ballot initiative to stop it. >> we have 193,000 acres in marin of open space, and they

a young woman from west africa is making a splash in santa cruz. she is in training for the olympics, and is hoping to make the team from her native senegal. >> just six weeks after her arrival, he is impressing not only coaches, but also other surfers at steamer's lane. >> reporter david louie has the story from santa cruz. >> 22-year-old haju is adjusting

to the much cooler waters of the pacific. she is believed to be the only woman surfer in her native senegal in west africa, and she is here to train with the goal of making her country's olympic team in 2020. the first time surf willing be an olympic sport. french is her native wudge, but even in english she commutes her love of surfing. >> i like surfing i can catch the wave and i go. >> she connected with a special coach and competition judge rhonda harper, whose mission is to identify and train more black women to enter professional surfing. she arranged for haju to come to santa cruz for intense training. it's a tough training regimen. the coach has her out of bed at 6:00 in the morning, down here surfing all day, and then hitting the gym as well. she has made progress. next week she has her sights on going to japan to compete in a qualifying event that leads to the olympics. but the problem is money. despite fundraising, she is $1400 short. a gofundme campaign is trying to
