morning. the sliger fire raced across 90 acres of land. officials ordered mandatory evacuations because flames were coming close to homes and there is concern the fire could jump the american river and burn into populated areas. cal fire called in air tankers yesterday to control the flames. the fire is now 40% contained this morning. it's 4:30. if you're just joining us, a quick update on weather and traffic. >> good morning, jessica. let's take a look at what's going on up north. the temperatures have cooled down to 73. the relative humidity not good. 35%. still have gusts around 12 miles per hour. the winds aren't going to get too out of control. they will be around 10 to 15 throughout most of the day. blowing the smoke away from us. it's the heat that's going to be an issue. mid to upper 90s through monday and then a break next week with some mid to upper 80s. back at home you can see the flags on the ferry building blowing off to the east once again. we have a sea breeze going to s athe aun tinnd 86.s in checksw

comfortable evening, a lot like last night, 60s, 70s, and a few 50s at the coast. a check of the commute.were sin couple slow spots here this morning in the trivalley. one of those westbound 580 just before you get to shaffer ranch road. a two-vehicle crash, pickup and semi involved. we had a few lanes blocked. sounds like we're down to the far right lane blocked by emergency crews and everyone involved in the collision is off on the shoulder. we did have a little bit of red as you left 680 and continued on the westbound side of 580 starting to thin out. we will keep an eye on that. also the bay bridge toll plaza okay. a little backup in the cash lanes. >> in the south bay a high school is looking for a new leader after she was accused of

mishandling sex abuse accusations. >> the president of presentation high school resigned after students say she didn't do enough to protect them. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in san jose. snaths. >> yeah, hi, jessica. there has been a lot of pressure for the president and former principal to resign. mary miller says her resignation will be effective september 14th. there was a release from her in it miller says the allegations have become a distraction for the school and also mentioned she hopes her absence will bring peace to presentation. miller came under fire last year after a letter from a former student was published in "the washington post" accusing her of mishandling allegations of sexual abuse. dozens of alleged victimses have come forward. >> she did a lot of good for presentation. there is no doubt about that. but she also threw her failure to report child abuse, she

us have understood to be the situation from day one. >> reporter: republican lindsey graham defended president trump on cnn. >> to those who believe that this man is a fool, is just the people around him that keep us safe, you don't know what you're talking about. >> reporter: that anonymous writer from the president's very own team painting a very different picture, writing, americans should know there are adults in the room. we are trying to do what's right even when donald trump won't. >> reporter: and president trump also said that "the new york times" should give up their source as a matter of national security. well the "times" is standing by their reporting this morning, putting out a statement saying, quote, we are incredibly proud to have published this piece. in washington, emily rau, abc 7 news. >> thank you. in the east bay, a 19-year-old man from pittsburgh is under arrest for the attempted abduction of a woman in downtown lafayette. police say two other suspects,

though, are still wanted. authorities say someone tried to force a victim into a dark colored sedan around 4:15 tuesday morning. she escaped and screamed for help as the card sped away. lafayette police say an extensive network of surveillance cameras in the area helped authorities catch one of the suspects, 19-year-old jordan wilson was arrested and remains in jail with bail set at $200,000. thieves have hit another apple store in the bay area and this time it happened in downtown los gatos. sky 7 flew above the store on north santa cruz avenue after three men ripped merchandise off tables and ran out the front door yesterday. and if you're counting this is the eighth such theft in a few weeks. they've happened from santa rosa to burlingame. police have released surveillance video of some of the crimes in hopes of identifying the suspects. no one has been hurt. a scare for shoppers after police chased armed suspects

into an east bay bay mall as .olice search for four suspects two of them dumped guns inside the mall. officers found and arrested three of the four people and recovered the weapons. police aren't saying why the peopaining exercise returns to alameda county. the urban shield event brings together first responders from all over the country. they practice dealing with everything from natural disasters to terrorist attacks. opponents say the training militarizes the police. this is the final year urban shield will be hosted in its current form. in march the board of supervisors voted events should focus only on natural disasters. let's take a look at neighborhood temperatures and start along the east bay shore. 60 in fremont, 61 hayward, everybody else around 56 in san leandro to 57 in alameda, and richmond. 58 right now in oakland. here's a look at the western span of the bay bridge. you can see it's dry this morning and we can see it so no

mist, no drizzle, no fog. clouds then sunshine. ferry ride, no breezes or small craft advisory and mass transit will be cool in the city but pretty comfy as you head out to our inland neighborhoods. at least close to average. 86 is comfortable considering where we could be this time of year. start off at 57 this morning and have high clouds and sunshine. here's a look at the east bay where we'll start off cloudy and 59 and then mostly cloudy and 62 at 10:00 and see sunshine this afternoon and hang out in the low 70s, a few mid 70s as you head towards fremont and our last stop will be the south bay where we have 59, mostly cloudy this morning. we'll be sunny and 73 by noon, low 80s during the afternoon hours and about -- let's see 8:00 about 69 degrees. nice temperature. have you enjoyed the evening? they've been comfortable. >> late afternoons p. >> late afternoons have been great, yeah. those have been just perfect.

107 in palm springs, nearly 100 in fresno. we've got upper 70s for san diego and los angeles. an isolated thunderstorm possible in yosemite. 86 there. we've got 58 in eureka with more cloud cover and 79 in tahoe where it will be hazy once again not only today but tomorrow. got my fingers crossed we'll get cleaner air by sunday into next week when temperatures fall below average. it will feel like fall by wednesday. >> a live desk update. >> from "abc 7 mornings." >> at the live desk we are tracking a story that at least four people have died in the 6.7 magnitude earthquake in japan. look at these images from japanese television stations showing some of the damage. the quake happened in the local government says more than 30 people are feared buried in the landslides. nearly 30 million are without electricity. this is the latest natural

disaster in the country in the last few months on the typhoon floods. registered to vote through the dmv, the department says the technicians may have botched 23,000 voter registrations submitted through the motor voter law. the dmv revealed the letter to the secretary of state. customers vote by mail, language and political party selections were impacted. affected voters are going to get a letter so they can correct that information. california's motor voter law allows residents to automatically register to vote took effect in april. sinking, leaning, and now cracking, city inspectors and independent experts are assessing what caused a window on the 36nd floor of millennium tower to crack over the weekend. >> there's no imminent danger to pedestrianster melanie woodrow has the details. >> reporter: the tower has a new problem, a cracked window on the

36th floor. >> this is a window system that is designed to withstand hurricane-force winds, so this is, obviously, a serious concern. >> reporter: the city's department of building inspection took these photos. tom miller, the attorney for the homeowners association, says the person who lives in 36b heard a loud pop during the middle of the night over the holiday weekend and says it's the outside pane of glass that cracked. >> is that glass going to hold or be a falling object? >> reporter: the department of building inspection tells abc 7 news an inspector has been to the site three times. that inspector determined there was no imminent risk to pedestrians below specifically because the glass islameny nated and designed to hold in place even when fractured. the city issued this correction notice letting the building's management know they have until friday to issue a report including an evaluation of the repairs needed. miller says a new window has been ordered and will be installed within a week. during the replacement, he says they'll open up the side of the building to investigate what

caused the crack. the building's manager sent this notice to residents saying it's possible the incident is related to other issues in the building, but miller says a seismic expert and structural engineer disagrees. >> he informed us that it appeared not to be related to the performance of the building sinking or tilting. >> reporter: as for those problems, the homeowners association president says they are considering alternatives to bring the building up to the highest standard. >> he says it's now up to the legal process to determine who is responsible for implementing and paying for those fixes. in san francisco, melanie in woodrow, abc 7 news. >> there's been so many problems with that. >> i know. >> let's move on. going to be a nice day? you said it's going to be sunny for folks. >> outside of the coast, a lot of sunshine on the way. temperatures starting to peak inland. as you head out tomorrow enjoy 56 in walnut creek, increasing clouds right now. that warmth peaking tomorrow

means it gets cooler starting saturday and all the way to temperatures well below average for next week. a fall flavor to that forecast. a look at the cloud cover and you can see it's going to pull back to the coast a little bit faster today. there will be a few lingering clouds but not as many as we had yesterday during the lunch hour over the bay. you can see the white just blanketing the coast as we head into the afternoon hours. all right. as far as temperatures, let's see that southern spread once again in the south bay. 75p in milpitas, 80 cupertino and san jose to 93 in gilroy. 73 in santa cruz. head up to the peninsula upper 70s, 69 in millbrae. temperatures around 60 degrees at the coast today. 65 in downtown san francisco. up through the north bay we have petaluma, vallejo and san r. everodel pretty much i0s with 7 oakland, 80 orenda and mid to upper 80s as you go into the east bay valleys. tonight's temperatures in the low to upper 50s, antioch could be the exception at about 61

degrees. my accuweather seven-day forecast, look at those mid-90s inland tomorrow, low 80s around the bay and mid 60s at the coast. that comes without a spare the air moniker. what a difference. alexis. >> good morning. taking a look at the roads. off to a typical start here and yes, we do have some slight delays getting out of the central valley, so westbound 580, tracy into dublin, already in the yellow coming in at about 40 minutes. westbound 4, antioch to concord, okay. that's in the green at 14. and southbound 101 san rafael to san francisco, normally one of our latest commutes to fill in, so that is also still in the green at 15 minutes. bay bridge commute, live look at our south beach camera traffic into san francisco looking fine. we do have a head's up if you plan on using the bay bridge on saturday. caltrains plans to stop traffic so a pair of foundations from the eastern span can be imploded.

all right. that is what it looked like and sounded like during previous implosions and three foundation are being left in place to be used as supports for new planned parks and walkways and these are renderings of what they could look like. saturday's implosion will happen about noon and the pedestrian and bike path are closed so crews can prepare for the work. i know this is going to be strange but i really like watching an implosion video. >> i don't think you're alone. it's kind of cool, right. >> it is kind of cool. >> only not cool if you're trying to cross the bay bridge. if you have somewhere to be on saturday. >> true. >> head's up. plan for that. usually they do rolling closures of about 30 minutes for that. you could be stuck about that long. >> okay. sleep in and relax. >> exactly. >> thanks. the justice department says it will investigate whether social media sites are stifling free speech. >> the announcement came as facebook's sheryl sandberg and twitter's jack dorsey appeared before congress and here's more.

seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. hurricane florence, a category 3, out over the ocean right now. i put a couple of the different model plots to show you what's going to happen over the next week. it could hit from south carolina all the way up to massachusetts. >> thank you. happening today, an oakland high school student will be sworn in as the only student member of the california board of education. 17-year-old hemma is a senior at life academy. governor brown appointed her to take over the position back in march. she'll represent the state's 6.2 million public schoolchildren. san francisco mayor london breed is lnc a tech across the city. she unveiled the initiative from the upper terrace of moscone center where crews are installing a massive solar powered system. it will be capable of producing. breed wants all buildings constructed starting in 2030 to be powered with electricity from renewable sources and wants them

at a safari park in europe is going viral. that is a lion jumping into an open air car after spotting the park's owner in the front seat and proceeds to greet the tourists with cuddles and licks. by the way, just a few weeks lion injured a woman, so these tourists were -- i guess some of them were understandably nervous. others are taking photos and petting the lion. the park is famous for allowing visitors to get up close to animals. >> that's a little too close. >> why is there an open air vehicle at a safari park in the first place? those two things -- >> i don't know why people are petting it. i would be far away from the car. i would have took off running. >> it's a no for me. >> coming up next at 5:00 a.m., how the chp is making freeways in the east bay safer. the test officers ran this morning. >> the supreme court nominee faces another round of questions today after a tense showdown with senator kamala
