am. the delta fire is still totally out of control tonight. quadrupling in size since last night and shutting down a 50-mile stretch of interstate 5 in denton. bleeng e good evening. i'm dan ashley. the fire is burning in shasta county north of redding. we can see the location on this map. >> as you tonight, it has charred 22,000 acres, and there is no containment. blames are burning on both sides of if i-5, and it's trapping drivers. >> the flames from the delta fire roared for the freeway. most made it through okay, but at least one trucker needed to be rescued before his big rig caught fire. >> got trapped in twooet between both sides from what our driver told us. he said he was inside his cab trying to race out of he

>> abc 7 news was in shasta county today where trucks are parked on the side of the road waiting for it to reopen. smg were sitting under a rig trying to stay cool. drivers we spoke with didn't appear ready to chance it and hit the road in the middle of a raging wildfire. >> i don't want my truck to burn. it's a big responsibility. i would rather stay here. another day or so. >> fire crews are throwing everything they can at this blaze. that includes an all-out aerial assault. firefighters say part of the challenge is the fire's erratic behavior. >> probably 300 foot flames coming off the trees. 100 foot flames coming off the brush. >> there are mandatory evacuation orders in shasta and trinity counties, and to the north the community of -- has been told to be ready to leave at a moment's notice. some people this is becoming an all too family routine. >> i mean, we just got comfortable and thought we could unpack our stuff from the other fires skbrks now here we are right back in the mess again. >> abc 7 meteorologist is here

with what crews can expect over the next 24 hours or so. sandy. >> yeah, dan. things will be really hot around there, but right now it is much cooler. 73 degrees. take a look at the humidity. it has creeped up 27%, and the winds are starting to drop off now. about 7 miles per hour for the gusts. winds will remain generally 10 miles or less out of the south-southeast. as you take a look, the heat, though, tomorrow is going to be 99 degrees. that's not going to help the firefighters. 90 through the weekend into early next week. some of the smoke from that fire may be drifting into our area tomorrow as we see those temperatures rise. air quality declining. moderate air quality for all areas friday, but do see an improvement saturday through monday. today that smoke from the delta fire was blowing to the northeast with the wind direction switching, and we'll see some of that smoke drifting into our area as we head into tomorrow. full look at the forecast coming up. >> all right, thank you. cal fire asked state lawmakers for $234 million in

additional funds today. that's because the agency has already spent more than 95% of its $443 million budget. officials want to be ready to fight more fires. it has been the worst wildfires happen after september 1st. the damage so far from this year's wildfires created enormous costs. state insurance commissioner announced more than 10,000 residential and commercial insurance claims have been failed from the carr and d dszmendocino fires. dozen of senior residents during last year's north bay wildfires. abc 7 news was the first to break the story about what happened at oakmont senior living's marani and villa capri facilities. oakmont senior living failed to protect the health and safety of residents at both facilities. dss says it had family members not stepped in to help rescue

residents, more than 20 residents would have perished in the flames. new body cam footage from the night the north bay wildfires broke out last october has been released. >> we got to get out of here. >> yeah. >> i know. >> you can see how officers made life-saving decisions. the stories right back featured on "nightline". that starts at 12:35 a.m. zbliefr in east bay it comes after education secretary betsy devos again suggested arming teachers. here's abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley with why the issue is hitting home for many right now. >> last week a 14-year-old freshman fired a gun inside balance boa high school in san francisco. last month 16-year-old was shot and killed near a high school in

fairfield. the school was put on lockdown. >> it affects every american in every community and every town in every household. >> reporter: here in oakland a panel of students, educators, and gun violence prevention groups brainstormed what to do about it. >> we have become desensitized to gun violence. it normalizes shootings in our schools. >> the kids are on lockdown because there are guns in the neighborhood. there is nothing good that comes from guns. >> it was announced that the federal government was thinking about using federal education dollars to arm teachers with guns. >> reporter: passionately opposed to arming teachers, groups like sandy hook promise offered alternatives to connect local schools to national programs. things like a phone app to anonymously submit tips about students at risk. th >> this year alone in the state of california we've trained nearly 134,000 students through our programming.

[ applause ] >> we're growing like crazy here. >> we can't prevent fires. we can't prevent earthquakes. we can prevent school shootings. >> while the political discourse will continue, what everyone here agrees on is that it's the activism of young people that's changing the dialogue. in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> the san francisco police department has found the five officers who fatally shot mario woods acted in accordance with department policy. woods was killed by police in december of 2015. his death was recorded by cell phones and sparked national outrage. the decision ends a nearly three-year investigation into the incident. the district attorney announced in may that his office would not file charges against the five officers who shot woods. here in the south bay a silicon valley tech giant is stepping up to help after a veterans memorial was vandalized two weeks ago. abc 7 news reporter amanda del casto is live with deels

tonight. amanda. >> dan, after news of the vandalism spread, the san jose community came together and raised a few hundred dollars. then google stepped in. they donated the rest of the money and much more. >> reporter: for the second time in two years vandals have defaced the sons of san jose vietnam veterans memorial along west santa clara street. the memorial foundation says this time ashes burned into the granite. >> according to the guys that were fixing it, the guys who did it this time were actually try to vandalize it and leave their mark there forever. >> reporter: more determined is the community. the san jose parks foundation quickly got involved and opened on-line donations for others outraged over the disrespect. >> within, i would say about two hours we started to receive $5 donations, $10 donations, $100, $200. >> google's contribution has been disclosed, but we're told

the search engine giant has put the campaign over the top. >> they've made it so that we can clean it up, pay the costs, and then have some in the bank for any other future maintenance. >> reporter: of course, regular maintenance is the hope. for now more buffing is needed to return the war memorial to pristine condition. the clean-up effort is personal to those behind the war memorial who continued to honor the 147 san jose residents lost their lives in the vietnam war. >> i would hope these guys would go back to get an education about u.s. history, vietnam war and what we did and why it is sa the memorial is there. >> hes the memorial foundation is considering installing cameras. live in san jose, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amanda. the man behind the wheel of this suv that plowed into an oakland church is under arrest tonight. the alameda county sheriff's office says the vehicle came back as stolen, and the driver

new at 11:00 colin kaepernick made his first public appearance since the nike ad debuted on tuesday. kaepernick was at nike headquarters in beaverton, oregon, as part of nike's just do it day. he was seen hanging out with employees there. today is the start of the nfl season, but kaepernick remains unemployed after kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality during the 2016 season. nike's decision to feature kaepernick as the face of its just do it 30th anniversary campaign has sparked criticism as well as praise. tonight the entertainment world is remembering a hollywood legend. burt reynolds died today in florida at the age of 82. fans be have visiting his star on hollywood's wake of fame leaving flowers and a wreath. tonight the famous tcl chinese theater dimmed its lights in his honor. marcy gonzalez takes a look back

>> fans leaving flowers on his star on the hollywood walk of fae. he was known as a trailblazer arns tweeting burt reynolds was one of my heroes, and sally fields saying he will be in my history and my heart for as long as i live. marcy gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> go fund me promises it will pay a homeless veteran the full $400,000 donated to him even though the couple that started the campaign are now accused of using the money themselves. last year johnny bobbit gave his last $20 to introduce a woman stranded on the side of a philadelphia highway. it really struck a nerve. she and her boyfriend started go fund me for bobbit that went viral. now bobbit is suing the couple saying he only received a fraction of the money raised, and today police raided the couple's home and towed away a bmw. uc davis researchers have developed a blood test for autism that could speed up diagnosis for children.

they discovered a group of blood markers. when tested they could detect about 70% of kids are autism. no biomarker tests for autism currently exists. for now children diagnosed based on behaviors which may not be identified until kids are at least 2. >> okay. let's turn our attention now to weekend weather forecast. >> meteorologist anhas a look a what's coming our way. >> today temperatures began to come up. we're going to see the heat peaking tomorrow. live doppler 7 right now showing you just a little bit of fog around. we don't have the widespread fog. we have dealt with that in days past. look at the temperatures. they're in the 50s to the 60s range. quite comfortable out there. as we take a look at a time lapse from our sutro towercam are a, i want to show you how fog was trying and trying and trying to progress this afternoon, and this evening over san francisco. didn't go very far. as a matter of fact, it is limited tonight, but you did notice it was a little layer of

smoke from the wildfires just above the marine inversion. that's going to continue to impact our weather as we head into tomorrow. live picture from our east bay hills camera right now. you can barely see sales force tower because we do have some fog, but it's a shallow layer less than 1,000 feet, so limited fog for your morning commute. heats up inland. warmer elsewhere tomorrow afternoon. gradual cooling begins this weekend. hour by hour 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. the fog is really just going to be patchy around in the bay for the coastline. you will start out with pretty good amount of fog, and it is going to be dense in patches for the morning commute. be careful out there. clearing expected along the north bay coastline. some fog hangs around into the evening hours right around san francisco and san mateo coast. tomorrow morning you're looking at temperatures in the 50s, 60s. clear skies inland. it's going to be rapid clearing which allows the temperatures to come up. it's going to heat up. 97 degrees at gilroy. 95 in morgan hill. summer just returns. 86 in san jose and the south bay. 82 in sunny vail on the

peninsula. 77 in san mateo. 65 in half-moon bay. fog hanging around downtown san francisco. 69 degrees. south san francisco, 71, and hazy sunshine in the north bay. temperatures in the 60s at the beaches to the 90s well above marine inversion. places like lake port 95 degrees. 94 in cloverdale. 91 in santa rosa. heading into the east bay, your temperatures are going to actually bounce back to where they should be for this time of year. it was cooler than average, even though it warmed today in many areas. 76 in oakland. 80 newark. 82 fremont. inland areas, 94 degrees in concorde. hot, hazy, walnut creek as well. you can download the accuweather app and check out the temperatures any time you want. right now i want to turn your attention to something very interesting. next thursday, september 13th, we start to see an area of low pressure approaching from the north, and leftover tropical moisture coming in from the south. if the two come together as this
