overnight. shots were fired during a botched robbery near tacoma, washington. an armed suspect took four people hostage at a car dealership. he fired shots inside the dealership and at officers while barricading himself inside. the hostages managed to escape. the suspect was hit by gunfire but not seriously injured. cincinnati police are trying to figure out what happened inside a high rise. three people were killed when police say a man carrying about 200 rounds of ammunition walked into a building and opened fire. the suspect was eventually shot and killed by officers. two others were injured. the gunfire sent workers in the building running for their lives. >> everybody come running out of the bank. people in suits diving on the ground and stuff, shots fired! >> cincinnati's mayor said it could have been much worse if not for the police department's quick response.

two more states are two more states are catholic church covered up sex abuse. >> abc's brad mielke says this may be just the start. brad? >> hey, guys. in the days after that big grand jury report, pennsylvania's attorney general said he had colleagues coming up to him asking how can we do this. illinois now says it's investigating dioceses, and yesterday new york's attorney general announced she's issuing a subpoena of every catholic diocese in the state. a reporter with religion news service says you're about to see a wave of these. >> this does seem to be a particular moment, in addition to new york and illinois, we have nebraska, new mexico, florida, missouri, and sounds like new jersey as well, all launching some varying level of investigation into the diocese in their respective states.

now it's going to look different depending on w depending on the state, but they are actively trying to seek out, particularly the files that these dioceses keep. so each diocese has records of their priests and presumably as it was true in pennsylvania, records of allegations of sexual abuse against children. these are things that law enforcement often haven't seen. as you can imagine, a lot of law enforcement officials are anxious to look through them to see if they're liable for criminal r investigations. >> some like new york's say they welcome any investigation and want to help in any way possible. other dioceses, he said, have not responded. you can hear a lot more about these catholic church investigations on "start here" later this morning. check it out on apple podcast or your favorite podcasting app. diane, terrell? overseas a historic victory

>> a gutless editorial. >> reporter: in the essay, the unnamed senior official describes president trump's leadership as impetuous, petty and infective, adding the root of the problem is the president's amorality. the official claims there were early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th amendment, which would start a complex process for removing the president. the writer says there is now a quiet resistance within the administration and that many senior officials are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of the president's agenda and his worst inclinations. as the white house tries to figure out who wrote the essay, the denials from senior officials are pouring in. more than a dozen, from defense secretary james mattis to jeff sessions to the secretary of state. >> i come from a place where if you're not in a position to

execute the commander's intent, you have a singular option. it is to leave. >> reporter: throughout washington, people are now mining the essay for clues that might reveal its author. some zeroing in on the word "lodestar", noting it is a word that often appears in speeches by vice president pence. even he felt the need to say it wasn't him. >> i think it's a disgrace. and i think the "new york times" should be ashamed. and i think whoever wrote this anonymous editorial should also be ashamed as well. >> reporter: the first lady is accusing the writer of, quote, sabotaging the country. and the president says for security purposes, the "times" must turn him/her over at once. the "times" saying they won't do that. sarah sanders says if you want to know who the gutless loser is, call the opinion desk of the failing "new york times." but at least some republicans aren't surprised by the essay.
