terrell and diane. at least ten top officials have publicly denied penning that op-ed and the president is demanding "the new york times" reveal the author. >> is it subversion? is it treason? it's a horrible thing. >> reporter: during a rally in montana thursday night president trump venting to supporters. >> for the sake of our national security, "the new york times" should publish his name at once. >> reporter: but the author of that op-ed whom "the times" calls a senior administration official is still unknown. in it the writer describes president trump as impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective saying members of the administration are protecting the country from the president. >> the anonymous editorial published in "the new york times" represents a new low in american journalism. >> reporter: and now key figures in the trump white house lining up to denounce and deny authoring it from mike pence to

cabinet members including defense secretary james mattis, treasury secretary steven mnuchin, attorney general jeff sessions and the secretary of state mike pompeo. >> it's not mine. >> reporter: even first lady melania trump accusing the writer of, quote, sabotaging the country and trump ally senator rand paul suggesting the president force his staff to take polygraph tests. but at least one republican still not surprised. >> i think the biggest issue they're going to have is figuring out who wouldn't have written a letter like that. >> reporter: well, this morning "the new york times" is reporting the white house has a list of 12 possible suspects and today in washington as staffers work to narrow down that list, president trump is not in town. he is on the campaign trail in north and south dakota. terrell and diane. >> all right, emily rau in d.c., thanks. president trump threatened to shut down the government over funding for his border wall but says that likely will not happen. at least not before november. he told fox news that

congressional leadership have agreed to address border security right after the midterm elections. we have a headline from the russia investigation. the president will not answer any questions about possible obstruction of justice. that's according to his lawyer rudy giuliani. he told associated press the topic of obstruction of justice is a no go. let's go now to the supreme court nominee brett g kavanaugh. another marathon session ended overnight after some democrats took the dramatic step of volunteering to be expelled from the senate to disclose confidential documents about kavanaugh's past. but republicans are slamming the move as a cheap stunt. overnight, brett kavanaugh had a smile on his face as he walked out of a closed door session with senators ending a grueling 14-hour day of questions. >> finally get to the point where the chairman said, judge, go home. we're going to keep arguing. >> reporter: the white house was quick to praise kavanaugh after

his third day in the hot seat saying in a statement that kavanaugh demonstrated extraordinary temperament. early on thursday's session democrats made a dramatic stand when senator cory booker appeared to flaunt senate rules by releasing confidential emails from kavanaugh's years in the george w. bush white house. one dealing with racial profiling after 9/11. >> i openly invite and accept the consequences of my team releasing that email right now. >> reporter: others democrat stood with booker. >> count me in. >> count me in too. >> reporter: those democrats face possible expulsion for breaking senate rules, but republicans claimed it was all a show because the documents had already been released. roe versus wade came into focus when democrats asked kavanaugh about an email from 2003 in which he wrote, i'm not sure that all legal scholars refer to roe as the settled law of the land at the supreme court level since court can always overrule its precedent. democrats demanded to know if that was a hint that kavanaugh will help to overrule the

landmark abortion decision. >> it was referring to the views of legal scholars and i think my comment in the email is that might be overstating the position of legal scholars. >> reporter: he also tried to clarify an answer about whether he had ever discussed special counsel robert mueller's investigation of president trump with anyone at a law firm founded by the president's personal lawyer. >> i haven't had any inappropriate conversations about that investigation with anyone. >> reporter: but senator kamala harris wasn't satisfied. >> under oath you gave no clear answer, but i will ask you again and for the last time, yes or no, have you ever been part of a conversation with lawyers at the firm of cast wittwittwittwittwit benson & torres? >> the answer is no. >> the hearing wraps up with testimony from legal experts and witnesses speaking on kavanaugh's behalf. republicans are expected to

confirm him in time for the supreme court's new term october 1st. two more states you investigating allegations that the catholic church covered up abuse accusations. the attorney general in new york is forming a task force with subpoena power. recently a report from a pennsylvania grand jury detailed decades of abuse by hundreds of priests. police in cincinnati are investigating the motive for a violent rampage at a downtown bank. three people were killed. police said the 29-year-old had enough firepower to cause a, quote, bloodbath beyond imagination. he was killed by police. investigators suggested possible mental health issues and say the gunman recently claimed media outlets stole his personal information. charges against a computer programmer in north korea accused in ray string of cyberattacks including the one on sony pictures in 2014. they say he was working for the korean government.

he's also been linked to the virus that infected computers in 150 countries and crippled part of the british health care system. british airways is investigating a customer data breach of 380,000 card payments made on the airline's website and mobile app. they all may have been compromised. the airline says the stolen data does not include passport numbers. the wildfire that surrounded cars on a highway in northern california has now burned 34 square miles. part of interstate 5 north of redding is still closed this morning. that fire was zero percent contained with more dry and windy weather on the way. tropical storm florence is expected to grow stronger and reach bermuda early next week. meanwhile parts of the midwest are bracing for heavy rain. let's take a look at your friday forecast. good morning. get the umbrella set not just f in the midwest talking 3 to 6

♪ back nowithhichesterfield c virginia. it stalled into -- ran into a stalled tractor trailer. a kansas man has been charged with second degree murder for his wife's death on a cruise ship. federal prosecutors say eric newman killed tamara lawson. they were traveling on the carnival cruise ship "elation" back in january. they said lawson died after falling two floors from her balcony on the 14th floor of the deck. investigators have not revealed any other details about the case. a row manage novelist from oregon is caught in a real-life drama. nancy crampton-brophy is facing murder charges for the shooting of her husband, he was found in a kitchen at the oregon culinary institute two days after his death, the 68-year-old's spoke at a vigil for her husband. her novels include one called

"the wrong husband." prosecutors have not discussed the motive in this case. cbs is reportedly looking to part ways with its embattled ceo and reportedly offered les moonves a $100 million exit package accused of sexual misconduct by several women but has denied any assault or retaliatory actions. the homeless good samaritan from philadelphia who says he was scammed out of $400,000 raised for him online will now get that money after all. the website gofundme is guaranteeing the money for johnny bobbitt. remember he first made news headlines when he gave his last $20 to help a woman who had ran out of gas on the highway. she and her boyfriend then set up a fund-raising account but he claims that they spent the money on trips and shopping sprees. on thursday, authorities raided the couple's home, they seized the bmw and they want to know where that money went. new york city no longer has the highest concentration of uber wealthy people in the world. it lost out to hong con which
