track to be the worst fire season in california history. and officials say the delta fire burning now was in their words human caused. but they haven't said whether they believe it was started intentionally. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> nearly 50 miles of interstate 5 remain closed, and caltrans is saying the earliest that stretch might open is sunday. there are concerns about not only the flames, but debris that has burned and could fall on the roadway. when abc 7 news was in shasta county yesterday we saw a long line of trucking along the side of the road. everybody was just waiting. interstate 5 is a major west coast artery link in california thoranand attle. spencer christian. let's take a look at current weather conditions in the area of the fire. we have hot conditions, dry conditions and gusty conditions. and right now, as a matter of fact, it's 91 degrees near the fire, even hotter, obviously, right at the base of the fire. but in the reporting stations, nearby, 91 degrees, relative humidity dangerously low, only

week. sweeping changes of tesla were announced. abc 7 news reporter david louie with the latest details live in san jose at a tesla charging station. david? >> reporter: larry, indeed, seven executives at tesla has been named either to new positions or they've been promoted to new positions this coming after elon musk had discussions with the board of directors. now, he's lost about 48 people during the course of the year in top management positions, so he has been known to spend long hours at the factory, even sleeping there at night in fremont. however, musk has a new problem of his own me wa caught smoking pot during an interview. the latest management changes might take some pressure off elon musk and might help ramp up vehicle production. but the video of him smoking a mixture of marijuana and tobacco could create an image problem that won't go away. r when his company is facing a recorded sec investigation and is having difficulty meeting production targets, not a great look for an executive.

>> reporter: it stems from this tweet saying he was preparing to take tesla private. later acknowledging it wasn't happening. the loss of two key executives this week caused his stock to fall today. >> investors are losing patience with the circus that's going on. still one of the most valuable car companies on the planet. >> reporter: some are joking musk should smoke more marijuana which is legal in california if only to relax and let his new management team do their jobs. he has complained about stress, and working non-stop. but he may have run afoul of the tesla code of conduct which says employees should not work under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. >> if the board determines that he was, you know, functioning in his employment role at the time, and in violation of that, they will serve him and the organization well to hold him to the same standards they hold other employees to. >> tesla owners say musk is setting a bad example, especially for kids. >> he must have a responsibility

burning at a facility that processes scrap metal. they've done a very good job at quickly putting out the flames there. we saw a couple of minutes ago when we were during the commercial break some flames still burning. but it looks like they've got it under control. and the smoke is a little bit of a concern, but outside of that, they've done a very good job in dealing with this and no word on any possible injuries. the four days of confirmation hearings for supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh came to an end today. lawmakers heard testimony from character witnesses, both for and against the kavanaugh nomination. john dean claimed he would be the most presidential power friendly supreme court justice in the modern age. >> he would have the congress immunize sitting presidents from civil and criminal liability. under judge kavanaugh's recommendation if a president shot somebody in cold blood on fifth avenue, that president could in the be prosecuted while in office. >> ted olson, the former

solicitor general under president george w. bush that he's well qualified to sit on the supreme court, calling him thoughtful, gracious, open minded and possessing a great legal mind. our guest here today has unique insight into brett kavanaugh. he's a bay area lawyer and a member of the supreme court bar, vernon, you went to yale law school the same year as kavanaugh. >> yes, that's right. >> you've had three years to get good insight into him as a friend, a person, a scholar. let's start with the friend part person. give us an idea. >> brett's great. as everyone has testified, no one has anything really bad to say about brett personally. and i consider him to be a friend. he's warm, he's engaged, he's funny. he's really quick with a wit, and he's very present. he's really a -- he's a person of really good character. he's the kind of person, you know, you'd be happy to call a friend. >> what about him as a scholar,

ted olson says he has a great legal mind. did you see that at school? >> well, it's funny because brett didn't -- brett is a brilliant jurist, whether you agree or disagree with his approach to the law. he didn't really distinguish himself as the smartest, you know, person, in part because he was pretty quiet, he listened more than he talked. there were a lot of really smart people in that class who talked more than they listened. he didn't come across that way. but i think he's probably -- yeah. >> well, watching him in the hearings this week, was that the guy you knew? did anything surprise you? >> yes, the kind of twinkle in his eye, the very thorough way that he knows the law, the very mo th methodical way he works his way through questions, i did, i was a little surprised at the kind of reserved nature of some of the responses that they withheld some information and whatnot. i could almost see he wasn't that comfortable with that. it may have been something that

he had to do. that was uncharacteristic. >> the least comfortable parts were the exchanges with senator kamala harris whom you also know. she grilled him on abortion, on presidential powers, the mueller investigation conversations. what did you make of that exchange? >> well, it was so unique. i worked with kamala for many years, she's a friend, i respect her greatly. she was at her best in that hearing. she was on fire. you see why she was so great in the courtroom. and these issues are so important. and brett is a different kind of judge, and it's going to be a different day if he rises to the supreme court. he's an originalist. so for all these concerns that kamala is raising i share those concerns because he's going to take a different approach to the constitution with regard to those issues. >> all right. so then based on those concerns, do you ultimately senators should vote to confirm kavanaugh based on his qualifications or should they not, based on his qualifications and, perhaps, political

pacifica and south san francisco. the state attorney general says they force their employees to work and live in just awful conditions, and under the threat of deportation. abc 7 news anchor dion lim made disturbing discoveries inside a $5 million san francisco home rented out through airbnb. the house was trashed. she'll have a look coming up. a trial date has now been set for the ghost ship criminal trial. jury selection is set to begin early april. this comes just a month after an oakland judge threw out a plea agreement for the two defendants. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is live at the alameda county superior courthouse in oakland. laura? >> reporter: hi, kristen, this was a brief hearing in which both defendants withdrew their no contest pleas and reentered pleas of not to all charges. the judge said this trial date is, quote, set in stone

oakland and the county of alameda have ever endured. >> between now and the trial date the judge will consider two motions in the ghost ship case. the first involves the request to have the original plea agreement reinstated. the deal that was thrown out last month. a second motion to move the ghost ship trial out of alameda county will be heard in november. >> my client, from my perspective, has falsely been kind of compared with charles manson, you know, some kind of a killer. so he has been, my view, assassinated by the press. >> reporter: now, sarah doesn't think this trial has to move forward, just somewhere out of alameda county, perhaps to another county here in the bay area. harris's attorneys don't necessarily want it moved. they're saying they thinkir client might actually get a more sympathetic jury right here in oakland. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura the trial date is set,

"the new york times" said the white house has a list of 12 suspects. former trump campaign adviser george papadopoulos has been sentenced to 14 days in prison for lying to the fbi. prosecutors sought the sentence of up to six months while defense lawyers asked for pro base. his case was the first to detail a member of the trump campaign having knowledge of russian

too many of us think we can beat the train and t drivers do not survive the bet. today south bay agencies were out enforcing the rules around vta light rail. they issued at least 16 citations and 25 warnings. here's abc 7 news reporter matt keller. >> reporter: getting a ticket to start your day can be a bummer. but it's safety month and these deputies are making sure drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are aware of the laws around vta tracks. >> it's really an education exercise for us today. many people think they can just beat a train and oftentimes as we've seen in the bay area, if

you're going to try to beat a train, oftentmes the train wins. >> reporter: sheriffs deputies told me they're looking for speeding drivers and red light runners for today's special enforcement operation. cars must also stop at the line. pedestrians also have rules to follow. they're supposed to be 15 feet away from the crossing arms when a train is coming through. and jaywalking around tracks can be especially dangerous. del mar high school sits at the corner of southwest expressway and stoke street in san jose. >> we're reminding the kids here going to school or those just walking in the neighborhood to really focus, pay attention, remove those distractions like texting, wearing their ear buds. >> reporter: sadly this intersection has seen tragedies, two people in two separate accidents were hit and killed by a vta train in 2014, including a 14-year-old girl. >> any fatality is an impact to the family and of course to our vta staff. we're just encouraging folks through our rail safety month

side of the bridge while crews install explosive charges on piers 19 and 20. the piers buried deep in the bay mud supported the eastern span. once that span was torn down the piers were no longer needed. the first ones were destroyed in september 2015. once again, for safety, there can be no cars on the bridge during the blast. >> on saturday, between 11:00 and 1:00, we're going to slow traffic with the help of chp so there's no traffic on the new bay bridge. >> the expertly placed charges will cause the piers to collapse in upon themselves and steps are being taken to protect the sea life nearby. >> see those bubbles in the water? they're produced by giant compressors on barges surrounding these piers. the idea is to generate a curtain of bubbles around the piers when the explosion occurs and reduce the shock wave on nearby aquatic life. meantime, four remaining piers
