while liquid nitrogen leaked from a damaged tank right there. that tank had fallen off a truck. this afternoon's mishap forced a evacuation. firefighters tell us the leak poses no threat to anybody outside the facility along sonoma boulevard. in shasta county tonight, the delta fire is still out of control. the wildfire started wednesday north of redding. flames are burning on both sides of interstate 5, and a nearly 50-mile stretch of the freeway is closed through the weekend. more than 24,000 acres or 38 square miles have burned. the fire is zero percent contain and more than 100 homes are threatened. firefighters say they are tired, but they're going to keep going. >> it's been a lrnong, long fig. we've been everywhere from the carr to the mendocino complex. it's been a long fire season in northern california this year, and we're going to do whatever we can to minimize that. >> they are working really hard. there are evacuations for some residents in shasta and trinity

counties, and some in siskiyou have been warn they'd may need to leave as well in a hurry. a community meeting is going on right now in dunsmuir. in the east bay, a trial date has now been set for the ghost ship criminal trial. jury selection is set to begin in early april of next year. today's decision comes a month after an oakland judge threw out a plea agreement that called for a relatively short prison sentences for the defendants. laura anthony has the story. >> so they're asking for it. they're going to get it. >> the lead attorney for ghost ship defendant derek al mena spare nod words in expressing his desire to move forward with a criminal trial, one that's now set for april 2nd of next year. >> we'll be going after the landlord, the slumlord. we'll be going after the fire department. we'll be going after child protective services. we'll be going after the sheriff, going after oakland police. >> almena and co-defendant max harris both face 36 counts of

involuntary manslaughter for the 2016 fire at the fruitvale warehouse. like sarah, harris's attorney told reporters much of his defense will involve diverting blame to other. . >> we want this to be the most painful trial the city of oakland have endured and we want to do it for the public. we want to do it because there has been a cover-up. >> between now and a trial date, the judge will consider two motions in the ghost ship case. the first involves serra's request to have the original plea agreement reinstated, the deal that was thrown out last month. a second motion to move the ghost ship trial out of alameda county will be heard in november. >> my client from my perspective has falsely been kind of compared with charles manson, you know, some kind of a killer. so he has been my view assassinated by the press. >> serra doesn't want the trial moved far, perhaps just to another county here in the bay

area. harris' attorneys don't necessarily want it moved at all. they believe their client might get a more sympathetic jury right here in oakland. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> thank you. at the last minute, millennium tower management met a deadline to hand over its report about a cracked window on the 36th floor that we've been talking about this week. the san francisco skyscraper next to the new salesforce transit center has been plagued with problems. it's both leaning and sinking, and now the cracked window raising questions. lyanne melendez is live near the tower with new information tonight. lyanne? >> that's right. we just obtained this letter, and it basically says that the millennium tower management wants to do a hands-on exterior examination is of that building. and in this letter it says that they want to rappel down the building some time next week to photograph the curtain wall and glass and tape up that glass from the outside to make it

safe. now we're learning a lot more about that glass window. at the close of business today, millennium tower management asked the department of building inspections for more time to determine if the cracked window was an isolated incident or due to structural stress. in the meantime, two engineers from that department examined the cracked windowpane in unit 36b yesterday. today a large scaffolding was ordered. >> fell out and fell down the 36 floors, and it wouldn't hit anybody. it would hit the scaffolding. >> it's unlikely any pieces would fall from the unit on the 36th floor because the crack is contained with a silicone sealant. >> there looked to be a problem not structurally related. >> tom miller is the attorney for the homeowners association. he revealed new information

regarding the replacement of the window. >> we were just informed that that window bonnet is now discontinued. so we have to go back, find a like kind and quality, hurricane resistant, seismic resistant. >> the manufacturer is enclosed corporation based in minnesota. we contacted the company, but they would not confirm the information. the homeowners association is now asking for a full inspection of all windows. >> we want to see whether that same installation problem with that window is systemic, meaning it may be the same problem in the other windows in that building. >> so the letter also says that tomorrow, saturday, they will use drone photography and a high-powered lens from the building across the street. and i think that is one of the salesforce buildings, to see if they can find any clues. that's happening tomorrow. i'm live in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news.

garbage everywhere you look. this is what happened to a rental on airbnb. a nice home. abc 7 reporter dion lim with a closer look at the mess left behind this multimillion-dollar house. dion? >> dan, the homeowner is actually on vacation, but may have to cut that vacation short after what happened at his $5.3 million home. now i'm not allowed to disclose which neighborhood this happened in, but i can say the home has sweeping views of the bay. >> it was horrible, horrible. the person who was renting here had defecated through the entire home and urinated all over the place. >> this is what realtor and property manager egan lim walked into just a few minutes ago and prompted him to call in private clean, a crime scene cleaning crew. >> it was something out of a horror movie. >> it was pretty bad. people from the outside walking by could smell. you had joggers stopping going wow, what's that smell. >> the $5.3 million home in one of san francisco's toniest

neighborhoods ransacked by the renter inside. >> this was a queen bed. there there was blood stains. >> to give you an idea just how bad this home was, take a look at this bucket. it's filled with about 150 needles, most of them for drug use. this in-law suite was rented for three and a half weeks for $100 a night through airbnb. lim can't even estimate how much damage was done. >> we're going file a formal complaint. >> airbnb does have a wind million host guarantee in case of damages. the company sent us this statement saying in part, in 2017, there were than 49 million trips at airbnb listings worldwide. significant property damage was reported to us only .004% of the time. something even lim agreeswith and says won't deter him from managing properties through rental sites. >> i use airbnb myself. i'm very confident using airbnb and any of the other vacation rental sites. anybody somebody to this type of vandalism.

>> the property manager and the home's owner says despite what happened, they will rent that unit again. however. that will be installing video cameras outside. in san francisco tonight, i'm dion lim, abc 7 news. >> dion, thank you. tomorrow will mark the official end to demolition of the old eastern span of the bay bridge. this is what it's looked and sounded like during previous implosion. abc 7 anchor eric thomas explains what's left to blow up. >> if you were close enough to see this tomorrow, you will have witnessed the close of a three-year-long demolition project. >> and that's it to interest old bay bridge. >> less than 24 hours away from the final implosion, and crews are still hammering away at the project to make sure it goes like clockwork. >>ette won't be very loud. the whole process takes about five seconds once the implosions begin. >> caltrans has already shut down the bike path and walking trail on the south side of the

bridge while crews install explosive charges on piers 19 and 20. the piers, buried deep in the bay mud supported the old eastern span of the bay bridge. once that span was torn down, the piers were no longer needed. caltrans destroyed the first in december of 2015, about three years and one week before this final demolition. once again, for safety, there can be no cars on the bridge during the blast. >> on saturday, between 11:00 and 1:00, we're going to slow traffic with the help of chp. so there is no traffic on the new bay bridge. >> the expertly placed charges will cause the piers to collapse in upon themselves and steps are being taken to protect the sea life nearby. >> see the bubbles in the water? they're produced by giant compressors on barges surrounding the piers. the idea is to create a curtain of bubbles around the piers when the explosion occurs and reduce the shock waive on nearby aquatic life. >> meantime, four remaining

looking over sunny san francisco at this hour. it is 60 degrees near the city. 65 across the bay in oakland. mountain view 68. 86 in mortgage hill, and 57 at half moon bay. nice view from mount tam looking down on to a little bit of the financial district and downtown san francisco. up north, it's 72 degrees at santa rosa. novato, 79. upper 80s a fairfield and conco concord. 85 at livermore. the view from emeryville. you can see the marine layer off in the distance there touching the coastline. but not advancing across the bay right now. these are our forecast features. we'll see some foggy areas along the coast overnight. heat ease as little bit this weekend. it will be much cooler by the middle of next week. we've been showing you this water vapor satellite image throughout the week now as that warmer, dryer air mass which is here now has been approaching. and that was responsible for the big warm-up we had today. and some of that warmth will hold on tomorrow. but the warmth will be weakening tomorrow and into the weekend. the forecast animation look likes this starting at 7:00

[ closing bell ] stocks were down across the board today over worries about a trade war. president trump said he's ready to impose tariffs on basically every good that's imported from china. the dow lost about 80 points. the nasdaq 20, and the s&p went down by six. encouraging news for the economy. a new report shows hiring and wage growth did better than expected. in august, the country's unemployment rate remain at 3.9%. well, it has been a big week for nike, announcing colin kaepernick as the face of the just do it campaign. the 49ers former quarterback doesn't have a team and hasn't played since 2016 when he started to take a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality against minorities. nike stock took a hit following that announcement, then enjoyed

seized while agents were serving arrest warrants at rainbow bright day care and adult care facilities. they say they exploited hundreds of workers from the filipino community, forcing hem to work shifts, withholding pay and threatening some to turn them over to immigration if they complained. xavier becerra said the case was nearly a year in the making. >> we estimate that unpaid wages and overtime total somewhere around $8.5 million. we're also charging the four defendants with human trafficking for using physical force, sexual violence, fraud, and psychological coercion with their victims. >> the suspects were arraigned in san mateo county court this afternoon. authorities expect to file more charges against them in the future. in the north bay, there is a rigorous training program where fewer than half of those who start actually graduate. >> and they don't earn a cap and gown. they earn a guide dog harness.

okay. get your tissue ready. a new feature length documentary about guide dogs for the blind literally has audiences crying with happiness. >> this is true. even hardened journalists here at abc 7 were reaching for tissues. the movie called "pick of the litter" is made by bay area filmmakers featuring bay area puppies trying to make the cut as seeing eye dogs. >> the dogs that we're considering are really the best of the best. >> guide dogs for the blind has been in the san francisco bay area for more than 75 years. but most of us only see the star students once they're fully trained. this documentary follows a litter of five puppies from birth as they learn what it takes to make it. >> can you please just be good. >> the nonprofit works with 800 dogs a year, yet only about 300 make it all the way to becoming a life-changing companion for a blind or visually impaired person. pick of the litter is the work of by area filmmakers who first had to convince guide dog ceo it

so you would know exactly where the money was coming from. >> exactly. >> i checked the information on the fake e-mail and found there is a branch of first midwest bank at the address given. here's a photo from the bank's website. i find the bank routing number is correct too. i reached out to first midwest bank and was told no transfer occurred and the client has been notified. why was this client selected? the account could have been compromised in one of any number of attacks. this is an executive with aw collision centers. he says asking for specific money transfer information was key to uncovering the scam. >> so it's very much a red flag when someone is asking you to transfer funds. even if i'm going to get paid something or reimbursed for something, they don't transfer funds to my account. they cut me a check. >> now you've been warned. now i want to thank aw collision centers for sharing.

guess when he learn mid name and we became friends. it's an unlikely friendship, but it's one that's lasted for a long, long time. >> welts has spent more than four decades in the nba. while working in the league office in the 1980s, he came up with the idea of all-star weekend. it wasn't exactly visionary at the time. it was more like job preservation. >> my biggest motivation was to keep my job. we went into larry o'brien's office, and i got pretty much like a yeah, no, we're not going to do that. okay. so i don't know what happened. stern walks into my office a week later and says commissioner says we can do it. as long as, one, you don't embarrass him on his last weekend in office, and two, it doesn't cost the nba a nickel. >> whether it was growing the nba or running the suns or warriors, welts has always had one mission. >> there are people in my job who kind of think they're the show some time, but it's about shining a brighter light and creating a bigger stage pour the players and coaches that fans

guests are football commentator terry bradshaw and actress shannon purser. finally tonight, a few thoughts about what really matters. there is a great saying that refers to priorities. the main thing is to make sure you keep the main thing the main thing. in washington these days, keeping one's eye on the ball is a challenge. one tweet by the president sends the media on a wild goose chase. but this week it's not a tweet but a bruising new book by legendary journalist bob woodward and a savagely critical anonymous op-ed piece in "the new york times." the media is obsessed with both and so is the president. but while our attention is focused on that sideshow, something else is quietly happening in washington. republicans in the senate are working steadily on the gop agenda. immigration reform, new trade regulations and agreements, major cuts in corporate and personal taxes, conservative judges in the lower courts and a significant ideological shift on the supreme court. many in the bay area support those changes.
