but we do want to start with hurricane florence. it is a growing threat right now, and we want to show you the satellite video showing it from space. >> it is already a major hurricane heading straight for the carolinas and take a look at this. hurricane hunters tracking this massive storm and that's a look at the center of it. >> so here's what we know right now. florence is a category 4 hurricane with top sustained winds of 140 miles per hour. governors in maryland, virginia, north carolina, and south carolina have declared states of emergency. more than a million people are under evacuation orders. and 1600 national guard troops are on standby in the affected ar >> those mass evacuations are already under way. and our team is spread out across the storm zone. latest on the storm's path. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, michael. i'll be headed into the storm zone but have to show you this. it is still more than 900 miles to the south and east of the coast. it is moving west-northwest. it has max sustained winds of 140 miles per hour. if it makes landfall as a category 4 hurricane on this current track, it could make
7:03 am
history being the farthest north category 4 to make landfall, that cone of uncertainty is really squeezing together meaning that the area that we're watching for landfall is even smaller. remember, effects can be much broader than that. and that's why we see hurricane watches from charleston, through myrtle beach, jacksonville, north carolina and where my partner is, i'll talk about surge and talking about rainfall inland. but rob marciano, right there. i'll be heads there. but folks there are thinking about heading out for a good reason. >> they certainly are and with our confidence now growing, ginger, with the forecast coming to this area there was a noticeable uptick in anxiety yesterday. you can't blame these folks for that. they were out scrambling to fill gas tanks, to fill sandbags, and clear the shelves of anything they may need to survive pre and post the storm.out. one woman, a brand-new business owner had to move her heavy brand-new equipment out into

higher ground. of course, there are countless numbers of boats and harbors and marinas around here that will be tossed around like toys when florence comes through, so folks were lining up to get their boats out and to safe and higher ground. here on the beach in wrightsville, we are looking at the potential for a hazel-like storm, a record which had a storm surge of 15-plus feet. i'm maybe four or five feet above sea level. these dunes may be another eight or nine feet so you do the math. they're going to be threatened beyond on the other side are the homes that were not here 50, 60 years ago. they are protected by this dune if this dune is breached they will be flooded. beyond that is greenville sound. and the cape fear river so this place is surrounded by water and, you know, scenes like this up and down the carolina coastline, the tidewater, low country and certainly virginia beach, these are areas that face the same sort of scenario with water on both sides. and you're looking at a million people right now. it may be more with mandatory evacuations in place. michael, back over to you. >> thank you so much, rob. and, you know, a lot of friends
7:05 am
down there in the middle of that right in that storm's path. hopefully everyone gets out and evacuates safely. >> we do hope that, and talking about those evacuations, mandatory ones under way in north carolina's outer banks. that's where our gio benitez is this morning. and, gio, thank goodness it seems like people are taking these warnings seriously. >> reporter: yeah, robin. they really are. there are 245,000 people in this evacuation zone and i want to show you why these people, why officials want these people to get out right now. let's take our drone camera up in the air. you can see this is only one of two bridges getting in and out of the outer banks. so if you get stuck on one of these bridges during that storm, and you get that dangerous storm surge, that's a very bad situation. i want to show you some video from other parts of north carolina, because we're already seeing huge lines of cars evacuating in this state. traffic going back miles. over in south carolina we've seen a caravan of ambulances working to transport hospital patients to safety.te the

dire that the state is actually reversing traffic on a number of major highways to make it easier for people to get out. here in the outer banks i have to tell you i've been here during a much weaker hurricane. this place floods very easily, and that's why people are looking at the storm and saying, wait a minute. you have got to get out because this is a much stronger storm, robin. >> it is prone to flooding. so what about air and train travel, gio? >> reporter: well, robin, if you're traveling by air any time in the next few days, in this area, call those airlines, get on the phone with them. some of them are already offering those travel waivers. american airlines is one of those. and trains, a lot of regional trains have already been canceled in this area. in fact, amtrak has now modified service south of washington, d.c., robin. >> all to keep in mind, thanks very much. michael? >> all right. thank you, robin. south carolina's bracing for

evacuations along the state's entire coastline. nearly 200 miles and steve osunsami is in charleston this morning and, steve, charleston is a city that is no stranger to flooding. >> reporter: that's right, michael. they call it the low country for a reason. it's low, flat and next to the ocean and only takes a couple inches of rain all at once for this city to flood. i want to show you something. we are at the corner right now of east bay and water street and i want to you take a look at what this looked like a year ago during hurricane irma. the water was battering this city. water street was certainly underwater. cars were floating. and that and more is what they're afraid of with this storm. that's why there's such a desperate effort to evacuate people from this city starting at noon today. interstate 26 from here to columbia will be reversed in one direction. they are very, very, very urgently encouraging people to leave and not stay because of the threat of flooding here. michael? >> all right, thank you so much, steve. george? >> okay, michael, thank you.
7:08 am
let's bring in the governor of south carolina, henry mcmaster. governor, thank you for joining us this morning. as we have seen, florence is picking up speed and size right now. are you ready? >> we started preparing days ago, we've been watching for a long time. we're working around the clock and we have an evacuation order for most of our coast in effect. all the coastal counties. and we're closing schools when necessary to get the schoolchildren off the streets and at home. don't want carpools and all that. we're going to have about a million people coming from the coast up to highways, up the evacuation routes coming through columbia and the center of the state in order to get away from the hurricane, so we're ready. >> which cities and which areas are you most worried about right now? >> well, it starts this entire coast. we're still within what they call the cone of uncertainty and almost all the way down to ne t georgia.
7:09 am
it looks more likely it will be farther north than that. but our whole coast is under evacuation order. and we're getting the people out of there. we started with the hospitals and nursing homes yesterday. we've got all the logistics wo the only question is how hard is this going to be? right now we are prepared for the worst. we're hoping for the best. but it's a lot harder to stand up and get ready than it is to stand down. so we're up and ready for whatever comes our way. >> i know you turned around the highways, as well. people will only be able to go out. are you confident everyone will be able to get out? >> yes, if they follow the evacuation routes and use those highways. we have four big highways leading from the coast as of noon today they will all be going all lanes will be open only in one direction. that is away from the coast. we don't want to gamble with a single south carolina life. we want to be sure everybody is safe.is might be inconvenient f some people, but we can worry
7:10 am
about the inconvenience later. but right now we're worried about lives and property. >> you had such terrible flooding from hurricane irma last year. what's your biggest fear right now? >> well, that's one of them because this as you mentioned -- this hurricane is big and strong and it's bigger -- looks like it's bigger than hurricane hugo which we had back in 1989. this is the most ferocious one since then. but all predictions are when it gets to the coast it's going to be moving slow so it'll be dumping rain on us and north carolina. >> when these hurricanes come, there are always people who just want to hunker down. what's your message to them? >> that's not safe. i'd rather be safe than sorry. right now we're expecting a big hit of wind, rain and a high tidal surge. it may be ten feet above ground level in some places. and we want the people to get out and get safe. >> and we are thinking of all the people of south carolina. governor, thanks very much. >> thanks, sir. >> you know, the warnings are
7:11 am
out there now. people have to listen. >> that's what it is. are they going to listen? hopefully they will. so let's to back to ginger for a look at what makes this storm so unique and potentially so dangerous. ginger? >> a lot of times when we see storms along the east coast they come up this way and the worst of the storm that right front quadrant is in the ocean. this one is coming perpendicular to the shore and, therefore, you'll see storm surge up to 12 feet along some of the really most vulnerable coast. so this is some of the predictions. three to five feet up to the state of virginia. five to eight there and look at that 6 to 12 anywhere from wilmington up through some of those beaches. but it's not just that. i feel like i'm going to go there tomorrow. landfall happens late thursday night through early friday morning. and i'm going to be there through at least monday. because of this. the storm doesn't move. this could end up having potentially more than two feet of rain. robin and george? >> incredible. all right, ginger, thank you. to washington now and our exclusive interview with donald trump jr. he is speaking out about the anonymous administration
