live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> hurricane florence is slowly grinding its way towards the carolina coast tonight. and while the eye has yet to arrive, the storm is already causing major flooding. good evening. thank you for join us. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. you can see the monster storm on our doppler radar, inching closer and closer to making landfall. florence has lost a little steam throughout the day. it is now a category 1 storm, packing winds of about 90 miles an hour. >> at last check, about 160,000 customers are without their electricity tonight in north carolina. the storm surge has been a big problem, measured as high as 10 feet in one location. marci gonzalez is in wilmington, north carolina which is under a hurricane warning tonight. >> good evening. the wind and rain here have been relentless throughout the day, and there are still many hours

of this and worse still ahead here. the ferocity of florence evident even before landfall. waves pounding this pier. water breaking through dunes, inundates homes and surging down coastal streets, the beginning of what is expected to be catastrophic flooding for parts of the carolinas. with this monstrous storm stretching 500 miles across, expected to dump as much as 40 inches of rain and pummel some areas with 13-foot storm surges. >> somewhat of a gloomy feeling knowing that the coast of north carolina is going to be changed forever. >> more than a million and a half people in the hurricane's path under evacuation orders. >> if you're on the beach, the time to go is now. >> some waiting until the last second to pack up and head out. >> it's a little scary thinking, you know, we may lose some stuff. >> finding some shelters already at capacity. others ignoring the warnings and riding out the storm.

>> it's going to be windy, yes. but i don't know. i'm just not scared. >> at this point authorities are telling anyone who decided to stay behind to just shelter in place, because these conditions are not letting up, and they're only expected to intensify through the night. in wilmington, north carolina, marci gonzalez, abc 7 news. >> thank you, marci. and check out this video. the storm surge is flooding a county emergency services building in new bern, north carolina. let's get to sandhya patel. >> florence is hours from landfall. outer bands of raynhamering the north carolina coastline. ten-foot storm surge has been reported in new bern, north carolina. wind gusts between 80 to 100 miles an hour. tornado watch boxes up until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow as the hurricane interacts with land. could see some tornadoes. it is weaker, category 1. packs winds of 90 miles per hour. but it is sprawling west-northwest at 6 miles per hour.

landfall tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m., and then it weakens to a tropical storm, making that sharp right-hand turn towards the northeast as we head into the weekend. rainfall could be isolated in areas, up to 40 inches through monday. storm surge up to 11 feet. we've already seen that storm surge of ten feet. and look at this. atlantic beach, almost 13 inches of rain and counting. dan? >> okay, sandhya, thanks very much. now, medical teams air force base are ready to go. carlos salcedo shows you the life-saving techniques that these remarkable men and women are ready to perform. >> inside travis air force base, military aircraft like the c-17 are ready to transport critical care air teams at a moment's notice. >> if my phone rang right now, i would call my husband, tell him i'm getting on an airplane, and

within two hours, i'd be expected to report where i'm needed. >> four medical teams, each with a physician, nurse, and respiratory therapist all have their bags packed, ready to assist with whatever devastation hurricane florence causes. >> there is lots of people we need to remember that can't evacuate and that need that critical care. >> with a wingspan close to 170 feet, these cargo planes are like an icu in the sky. while these medical crews wait the see if they'll be dispatched, five members with the contingency response team are already on the ground in the east coast, helping coordinate aircraft like this to land. >> once that hurricane leaves from the area, they're able to fly in not just military aircraft, but even civilian aircraft. >> each crewmember is well-trained. some have responded to other natural disasters like hurricane maria. >> it's never the happiest moent we would ever be called upon, but we certainly are humbled to be asked to be able to support.

>> as hurricane florence unleashes its fury, it's now a merit of waiting to see if extra help is needed. at travis air force base, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. a team of bay area firefighters has traveled all the way across the country tonight and is in north carolina right now, ready to help. the task force has members from just about every major fire department in the east bay. >> and we'll have live coverage of the storm throughout the night on our website, abc7news.com and on our free abc 7 news app. >> also, "good morning america" will have special coverage of hurricane florence starting at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. and then stay tuned for abc 7 mornings. in the south bay, the san jose diocese is taking extraordinary action to address clergy sexual abuse. they're going to name every priest believed to have abused minors. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo is live with the details. amanda? >> ama, other actions include listening sessions and an independent investigation into the crimes and cover-up. we spoke with the san jose survivor who asks what took so

long. in the first public pledge from a bay area diocese, san jose bishop patrick mcgraw says the crimes and cover-up have fuelled a crisis. mcgraw's cover-up comes the same day pope francis met in rome with leaders of the church. her in the bay >> it's a little painful to accept, but i guess it validates what we said in the first place, which we all knew is true. >> in the early 2000, he and others testified to the years of sexual abuse by the late reverend joseph pritchard. in 2005 the archdiocese of san francisco admitted guilt. thursday's letter by bishop mcgraw read the only way we can address the failed leadership of so many in the catholic church in the united states and around the world is for the diocese of san jose to do what we know is right and just.

think that a natural gas main became overpressurized somehow. one of the explosions caused a home's chimney to fly off and hit 18-year-old leo robinson's car, killing him inside. officials say at least ten other people were hurt. >> to sum it up, basically coming in to town from a community just outside of here responding back in, it looked like armageddon. >> families were forced to evacuate and will likely be out of their homes for days because of the dangerous conditions. new at 11:00, a highly radioactive object has been found at the former hunter's point naval shipyard. the chronicle reports the small object was found next to a housing area that has been declared safe and free of radioactive contamination for more than a decade. the object was mentioned in a progress letter sent from the state health department to the homeowners association today. the people who manage the millennium tower in san francisco will find out tomorrow

whether they've done enough to appease the city of san francisco and avoid having the building yellow tagged. the city put out some strict deadlines after a window on the 36th floor cracked. the chronicle reports, though, the city is backing down. crews put up more scaffolding today to protect against the possibility of glass falling and hitting people on the ground. they also need to repair a crane, and the city wants the glass inspected in all 419 units in the building. a yellow tag means people can live in the building but there is a potential hazard. san francisco marriott workers voted overwhelmingly today to authorize a strike. the vote comes amid contract negotiations between the workers union and the company. just last week, nearly a thousand workers marched in the city. tonight's vote doesn't start a strike, but allows workers to begin a walkout at any time. tonight muni is explaining why it's been plagued with so many delays lately. the agency says a contractor performing some routine tasks damaged equipment that controls

vehicles. just do a lot of common sense stuff to make california more resilient and cleaner for everybody. >> governor brown says carbon emissions account for 50% of the state's greenhouse gases. ferries typically run on diesel, but this vessel is all electric. >> this is our first voyage. it's a hybrid electric vessel. it's operating in all electric mode right now. >> we don't change the path that we're on today, the future of humanity is at stake. >> at the global action climate summit, actor harrison ford made a passionate plea for the planet. for governor brown to reverse the effects of climate change. outside moscone, protester says not enough has been done to stop the extraction of oil in california. the governor believes reversing the effects of climate change can happen if nations work together. >> russia, china, the u.s., we all breathe the same air, and we all have to do the same cleanup.

upside which of course keeps a fire danger down around this time. a live look from san jose looking at the shark tank there where visibility is good. it's not going to be so great everywhere as low clouds are going to be found near the coast and bay overnight tonight. a little milder tomorrow afternoon. with minor temperature changes right on through the weekend. hour-by-hour we go. commute time between 5:00 and 8:00 a.m. east bay hills and right near the coast you'll be starting without gray skies and in the afternoon, we'll hang on to the low clouds right near the coast. tomorrow morning, i would call it sweater weather. it is definitely going to be cool, especially in the north bay. as you will notice, mid- to upper 40s for many other parts of the bay area. sovl definitely grab that extra layer. and then for the afternoon, i think it's going to be a nice looking day. upper 70s to low 80s. 77 degrees in san jose. 79 in livermore. 80 concord, fairfield. 70 in oakland. 65, san francisco. low to upper 70s from san rafael santa rosa.

and in half moon bay 64 degrees. if you're going the giants game tomorrow night that. >> host the rockies at at&t park. it is going to be clear initially, but then some clouds will roll in. 58 degrees. and then as the game gets under way and wraps up, about 55 degrees and breezy. so i would take a hoodie if i were you to stay warm. you can track temperatures any time you want. here is look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. morning clouds giving way to a mild afternoon. a little cooler on saturday, and then temperatures do rebound. but still below average for this time of year with only low 60s, coast. low 80s inland through tuesday. wednesday, thursday i think we'll see some minor warming or modest warming. mid-80s inland. low 60s coast. so dan and ama, i think we just have to get used to this pattern for the time being. fall will arrive in nine days and heat will come in october. it's inevitable. >> fall is here in nine days? >> yes, can you believe that? >> sandhya, thanks. spacex is planning to launch a tourist on a trip to
