hurricane florence has officially made landfall. it is causing power outages, flooding and destruction in north carolina. emily rau is in wilmington, north carolina. we'll talk to her in a little bit. >> she was being blown around. it's been crazy this morning. good morning on this friday, september 14th. natasha is off. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from the accuweather forecast. meteorologist mike nicco tracking our forecast. it is tough to see the reporters out there in such heavy winds. >> been there, done that. it is almost torturous in a way. just hours upon hours of hours of just getting battered and battered with rain and wind. and then it is so noisy because of the rain and the wind. it is just like having music play at a high level for hours upon hours.

it is really a stressful situation for those who are trying to live through it right now. wilmington, that's where the eye is. it gets calmer on the eyewall. on either side, that's where the greatest chaos is. let's talk about what's going on here at home. highway 37 over to 29, a little bit of fog to deal with this morning. that will be around the better part of the morning commute. temperatures in the mid-40s to mid-50s. cooler this morning. 59 to 69 at noon. breezy 59 at the coast to a breezy 71 to 72 inland. 50s and 60s this evening. hey alexis. good morning, mike. the fog you mentioned on state route 37 prompted a dense fog advisory around sears point, 121. slow down and drive if you're traveling those areas today. no metering lights yet if you are using fast track here this morning. it looks like the carpool lanes have just opened up.

help out and respond to hurricane florence. they aren't the only ones in the bay area willing and ready to help. travis air force base, a medical team is place on stand-by to go. they have their bags packed and are ready for the call. >> there's lots of people, we have to remember, that can't evacuate and that need that critical care in any different situation. so that's a skill set that we are able to provide if needed to come in and get these people to safety that may not be able to do that for themselves. >> reporter: an oakland task force is already there. this team took pictures as they are headed to north carolina. they are staging at a regional airport, ready to move in. they have 16 people with boats, rescue swimmers, and a medical specialist with them. they are made up of different agencies, including oakland

fire, alameda, pleasanton, santa rosa. the entire bay area pitching in, doing what it can to help with hurricane florence. live in menlo park, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. here's a live look from cape hatteras right now where you do not want to be. it is an unsheltered island in the atlantic. we will continue to watch this and have a live report in a few minutes. the waves are huge. san mateo deputies say there will be more victims of a babysitter accused of molesting children. >> he worked as a rideshare driver and babysitter on a child care website. he babysat for several families and abused several boys under the age of 14. the sheriff's department is asking anyone who knew gutierrez to contact them.

>> san francisco workers could strike at any moment after an overwhelming vote to authorize a walkout. this is last week when nearly 1,000 marched in the city. as for last night's vote to strike, 98.6% approved it. this does not start a strike, but it means they can walk out at the present time. you may have seen or heard a large police presence in the south bay. officers responded to a home burglary call in san jose. five people tried to run after the victim came home and the victim actually caught one suspect. officers arrested three others. all of them juveniles. no word what happened to the fifth suspect. in the east bay, a male teacher apparently walked into a girls bathroom. it happened at the oakland military institute. this is 11-year-old -- excuse me.

an 11-year-old student told us she and her friend were chatting away, each using a stall last thursday when they heard someone come in and recognized his distinctive red boots. >> i made eye contact with him through the cracks of the stall. >> do you think there's any way he didn't know you guys were in there. >> well, he did because he seen our backpacks on the floor. >> the student said he urine aeutd in the stall next to theirs. the school said in conversations omi's attorney we have come to understand the teacher's actions do not constitute a crime. however, his actions are extremely serious and we are committed to fully investigating this matter. back to breaking news. within the last half hour, hurricane florence officially made landfall. it caused power outages and flooding last night. this is expected to be quite the long weekend for many people in

the southeast. abc news reporter emily rau is live. the conditions are seemingly getting worse. >> reporter: good morning again, jessica and reggie. yes, exactly right. the eye of the storm has officially made landfall less than 10 miles from where we are right now. we are certainly feeling the effects of last reported wind gusts in wilmington, north carolina. we are 105 miles per hour. florence is moving less than 10 miles per hour inland. but the wind coming with it, 10 times as fast. >> once these winds start blowing at that tropical storm rate, it will be virtually impossible for the rescuers to get in to rescue you. >> reporter: the tropical storm force winds blasting an area hundreds of miles wide, ripping off this gas station canopy in topsail beach, north carolina. as first responders pull back,

the storm surge is rushing in. in new bern, people wading through waist-deep water. >> right now i'm currently sit anything my truck, watching the water rise coming towards me. >> reporter: and in wilmington, the rain coming down sideways in sheets. families who chose to stay and ride it out, now bracing for the worst. >> the winds are just howling away. i can hear it from inside the house >> reporter: reports of structural damage already ramping up. shelters overflowing. and this wind is just incredible. it continues to rise this morning. 400,000 people that we know of are without power as this storm rages on. reggie and jessica. >> emily, can you tell us what it's been like prior to the eye hitting and now? this looks worse than we just saw you a half hour ago.

creek, and continue sliding to the south possibly over boiling spring lakes. here's a look at what's going on. we have well north of that, the best chance of tornados. a very micro scale. this is until 5:00. it affects 640,000. that's where most of the flooding has been so far because of the storm surge backing up the sounds and the rivers and keeping them from flowing out to the ocean. in fact, they have been flowing the other way inland. that's why we are seeing 40, 50 miles inland flooding. it's not going to move much. the flooding could go back to nearly the tennessee border, appalachians. 20, 30, 40 inches of rain still. storm urge, up to 11 feet. coast, sounds, rivers, inland flooding. damaging winds and possibly tornados right now. up until 2:00, barely moves.

wilmington, town careen, boiling springs lakes. carolina beach it is considerably calmer. 10 to 15 to the west and we're having gusts up to 90 to 100 miles per hour. we have tornados possible north of there. you can see very strong bands moving through other parts of north carolina. as this tracks south towards myrtle beach and south carolina the next 24 to 48 hours, that's where we will get the flooding from the rain. as mike said, hurricane florence made landfall near wrightsville beach about an hour ago at a category 1. >> you hear category 1 and you think it is not that bad. but it is. winds clocked at 101. it goes back to 1958. ted is live this morning >> reporter: reggie, good morning. you're right. category 1 doesn't sound like all that much. i guarantee you, we are now in

the dark and have been without power for hours, it is enough to certainly get your attention. this rain running sideways. they estimate another 12 hours of rain could come. this tree has been disintegrating before our eyes. as the sun has come up. we have heard roof matematemate one of the most fascinating things, look, we have been watching the storm across the atlantic for a long, long time. now the eye of the storm is maybe two miles from where we are right now in downtown wilmington. we missed the eye. it took that southern turn just about -- right after it made landfall. so we will miss the eye here in downtown wilmington. we are getting the strongest of that rain because it is right there on the eyewall.

you can see the wind pick up. it is the worst we have seen the last three or four days. the problem here for coastal north carolina and well inland is they have hourgs more of this and then days of a flooding threat. certainly a lot more concern than just what is going on on this street today. keep your fingers crossed for friends in north carolina. it's going to be a long one. >> we used to work together in houston. last year hufrricane harvey dumped 13 inches. that will get the rain that lasts for days, that houston got.
