throughout the morning. sit really nasty out there. we have been check anything with emily throughout the morning. emily, how are things now? >> reporter: good morning. the eye of hurricane florence has officially made landfall bringing with it intense gusts of wind here in north carolina, in wilmington. gusts up to 105 miles per hour. florence is moving less than 10 miles per hour inland. but the wind coming with it, ten times as fast. >> once these winds start blowing, if at that tropical storm rate, it will be virtually impossible for the rescuers to get in to rescue you. >> reporter: they are now blasting an area hundreds of miles wide, ripping off this gas station canopy in topsail beach. the storm surge is rushing in. in new bern, people wading

through waist-deep water. >> right now i'm currently sitting in my truck watching the water rise, coming towards me. >> reporter: in wilmington, rain coming down sideways in sheets. families who chose to stay and ride it out now bracing for the worst. >> we have large pine trees in the backyard and they are bending the. the winds are howling away. i can hear it inside the house >> reporter: shelters overflowing. at least 300,000 people are without power in this area. more than 100 are waiting for rescue in new bern. this storm is just getting started. thank you. obviously they need help from states across the u.s. crews from the bay area are ready to do that in the aftermath of florence. others are on stand by to leave at a moment's notice.

amy hollyfield is live in menlo park with that part of the story. amy >> reporter: firefighters here in menlo park. hearsay picture of the team. part of the team is in hawaii helping with hurricane efforts there. now they have been dispatched to north carolina to respond to florence. they aren't the only ones springing into action? they have four medical teams on stand-by. they have bags packed and ready to go to north carolina whenever they get the call. >> the hardest part is leaving our family at a moment's notice. >> reporter: oakland's task force is already in the east coast. they shared pictures of their travels.

and abused several boys under the age of 14. the sheriff's department is asking anyone who knew him to contact them. a male teacher apparently walked into a girls bathroom. it happened at the oakland military institute. an 11-year-old student told us she and her friend were chatting away, each using a stall last thursday when they heard someone come in and recognized his distinctive red boots. >> i made eye contact with him through the cracks of the stall. >> do you think there's any way he didn't know you guys were in there. >> well, he did because he seen our backpacks on the floor. >> the student said instead of turning around and walking out, he proceeded to urinate in the stall next to theirs. the school said in conversations omi's attorney we have come to understand the teacher's actions do not constitute a crime.

however, his actions are extremely serious and we are committed to fully investigating this matter. >> san francisco marriott overwhelming vote to any moment authorize a walkout. this is video from last week when nearly 1,000 workers marched in the city. the issue, contract negotiations between the workers union and the company. as for last night's vote to strike, 98.6% of workers approved it. that doesn't mean it will start a strike, but it means they can walk out at any time caught on camera. a fight between a small security guard and a group of people at a tribute for an actor. let's talk about tornados. they're possible in this area you see in red. 640,000 people under that threat. just about the entire state of north carolina and south carolina, nearly 5 million

welcome back. and a live look at wilmington, north carolina. heavy rain still coming down. really strong wind as hurricane florence continues to move inland. i want to show new from wilmington, the eye of the wall starting to move in early this morning. the winds so intense.

the rain even blowing sideways. i also want to show new new video into our live desk. marina in new bern, north carolina. you can see the blue boat there on the side. a lot of those boats really just bobbing up and down in those heavy waves that are battering the marina right now. a lot of the docks submerged. this is what it looked like in jacksonville, north carolina a few hours ago. victor okendo tweetingweetingweg his location. we will be more on florence throughout the newscast. a chaotic scene at a shopping mall parking lot in southern california. a crowd of hundreds of people roughing up two mall security guards. video shows damage on the guard's vehicle, including a crashed windshield. the side show in west covina wednesday night was in honor of "fast & furious" actor paul walker on what would have been

his 45th birthday. he died in a car crash in 2013. police hope to identify the suspects in the video. kidnapping survivor elizabeth smart is asking officials to reconsider a decision to release the woman who helped kidnap her. the now 30-year-old spoke in salt lake city yesterday. she was shocked to hear watch da barzee will get out next week. bar he zee was sbarzee release indeed 2024 but they miscalculated her time served. >> i do believe she is a threat. she is a woman who had six children and yet could co-conspire to kidnap a 14-year-old girl and not only sit next to her while being raped but encourage her husband to continue to rape me. so do i believe she is dangerous?

today. good morning. it's friday, september 14th. thanks for joining us. a whole lot going on this morning o. all morning long we have been watching florence. mike nicco tracking it for us. live doppler dialed up. it is starting to move south. it came ashore a couple of hours ago. look what it has done since then. it slowed down over carolina beach, moving south. it is about to head towards, say, myrtle beach. very big storm. for us we have a gorgeous sunrise. yesterday i kept telling you to look up. this morning you might want to look up againonce again. notice by noon, still in the 50s at the coast. rest of us, mid-to upper 60s. barely in the 70s at 4:00. jacket weather this evening. 57 at the coast. 66 inland. here's alexis. all right. good morning, mike. one new issue on the richmond

side of the san rafael bridge. you're seeing the backup here. four to five-car collision before the toll plaza. it sounds like they are all off on the shoulder. hard to believe that looking at this. i'm working on double-checking to see if that's true. definitely expect delays on the approach. another bridge basically in the same area for westbound 92 past the toll plaza for the san mateo. you're averaging 14 miles per hour. that is off on the right shoulder. the backup continues to grow toward the 880 area. hurricane florence batters the coast with relentless rain and powerful wind gusts. a live picture fromvil jacksonville, north carolina. >> how does it look now, derrick? >> reporter: yeah, the wind has calmed down a little bit. we did just get a little bit of a gust. there's still some rain. but that has slowed down as

well. as i say that, we get a gust. you can see the flag flapping violently. we are stand anything front of a hotel so i have some cover from the wind. but that shows you the extent of these sustained winds. the national weather service saying it is about 60-mile-per-hour sustained winds this morning. we have video from overnight showing you the conditions. heavy wind and rain in the jacksonville area, an hour kind of north of wrightsville beach where the eyewall was hitting this morning. the real big story is the the water with this, the flooding. in new bern, north carolina, we have video of that. extensive flooding. storm surge really hit them hard overnight. there are reports of 150 people in kneeled of water rescue in that area. reports of people stuck on rooftops. thankfully, though, no one has

died in that. there are no reports of any injuries. certainly a dire situation for people, who for whatever reason were not able to evacuate or chose not to evacuate. that will be the big story as the storm stays over this carolina coast the next couple of days. the rain and the flooding is the big concern. that is why officials were warning people, urging them to evacuate before this came in. not because of the wind but really because of the rain and the potential for that devastating life-threatening flooding. that is the latest here from jacksonville, north carolina. back to you guys in san francisco. derrick, you mentioned the people in need of rescue in new bern. have there been any rescues in your immediate area? and are emergency crews able to mobilize? >> reporter: so in this immediate area, we have not seen nearly as bad of flooding. new bern is about a 45-minute to an hour drive north from where

priests and name names. it is something clergy abusette. matt >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. the san jose diocese says they will name every priest they believe abused children. >> for me it's a little surreal because it's taken, however you want to look at it. you know, 15 to 20 years for this to come out even though back then the church admitted guilt. why weren't they exploring it back then? >> reporter: that's john. one of the 12 men molested in the 1970s by the late joseph pritchard. patrick mcgraw said the only way we can address the failed leadership of so many in the catholic church in the united states and around the world is for the diocese of san jose to do what we know is right and just. along with naming names and statuses of those accused of

abuse, there will be three listening sessions, an internal investigation by a former fbi executive. you can find the dates and times of the listening sessions on our website, abc7news.com. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. facial recognition technology will not be coming to any bart stations in the near future. the board of directors unanimously approved new transparency guidelines for surveillance technology. the new ordinance requires bart as a public debate and gets board approval before buying new surveillance equipment or even seeking money for it. passage came just a day after it was revealed that some bart officials installed a license plate reader in 2016 and shared the data with law enforcement database i.c.e. could access. the police chief says when he found out about that he ordered that it be taken down. >> we uninstalled the one reared that we had. and no longer sent any

information. and somebody called and said, hey, make sure you delete all our information. >> still, we don't know whether i.c.e. accessed the tin foes. police are bracing for more protests outside the moscone center for day three of the global climate action summit. protests snarled trfbg traffic around the center yesterday. environmental activists say the summit is just for show. one protester was arrested after with what looked like a scuffle in the crowd. thousands of delegates licensed as governor brown blasted the trump administration. >> when trump says in fact, we like more methane going into the air, that is highly destructive. very highly destructive. i think he will be remembered, on the path he is now, i don't know, liar, criminal, fool. pick your choice. >> the governor says the summit

cities near tennessee and then accelerates way. the aftermath devastating. billions of dollars in damage. a lot of hog farms in eastern north carolina. 49, santa clara, allen rock. everyone else in the low to mid-50s. low to mid-50s until the north bay. let's take a look at the gorgeous sunrise from mount tam. it will be breezy on the bay starting noon through 9:00 and cool if you're head outing and taking mass transit. small craft advisory on the bay. all the areas in yellow will be a little dicey for a small craft. it is friday afternoon, so people want to get out and enjoy the comfortable conditions. how about on the roads getting to work? ? we started off quiet. starting to have a few issues. so i want to get to a few of those. westbound 580, richmond side of

the san rafael bridge, not looking great. we had a five-car crash just past the toll plaza. they said initially i want was off on the shoulder. to me it looks like we had to have something blocked to have this backup. chp confirmed left lane blocked. definitely causing a delay on the approach. we can flip over to traffic maps. i'll show you what that looks like. a 15 to 20-minute delay. there you go. if you are coming into the point richmond area, definitely plan on delays. if you want to head south, use the bay bridge instead. you have your own set of delays too. metering lights on at 5:22. a two-vehicle collision reported just before the metering lights. i believe that was a closed lane. it doesn't look like that is a blocking issue. next traffic update in just about 10 minutes. thanks, alexis. a controversial 19th century statue has been removed. city crews loaded the early days sculpture this morning and

hauled it away. it showed a native american man at the feet of a conquering spanish cowboy and a catholic missionary. some people called it racist and demeaning. on wednesday, the city board of appeals voted to remove it. we continue to watch live images from hurricane florence and the stunning video. it's hard not to think about what we would do in a natural disaster in an earthquake here. one app is getting a lot of attention. it could be crucial in an emergency. we'll show it to you next. of course it's terrible in the southeast u.s. but here in the bay area, it couldn't be a more stunning sunris

a live look now at jacksonville, north carolina. as you can see, plenty of rain through much of the weekend. >> the category 1 storm made landfall two and a half hours ago at wrightsville peach. heavy rains and powerful winds, the threat of catastrophic flooding. early this morning, ginger zee was live in wilmington, north carolina as the eyewall started to move onto land. >> reporter: the wind is not the only issue. i'm seeing streets here. we are on a very high part of wilmington. streets are filled with water. i am seeing signs flying across the street. boards are ripping up from the end of this. we are in the heart of the storm. the eyewall is always the most violent part. we are feeling it and seeing it. after we get into the eye, there is still going to be hours long
