continues to batter the carolinas this morning. the storm turned deadly yesterday claiming the lives of at least 7 people. abc news reporter natalie bruneaule is live in wilmington with the latest. >> reporter: here in downtown wilmington, the heaviest winds and rain subsided but in other parts of the carolinas torrential downpours happening now. the biggest concern is catastrophic flooding as it pushes inland. more than a day of relentless rain. hurricane florence soaking the carolinas. bringing with her an unstoppable torrent of water. in knew rn north carolina, a 10-foot storm surge watch as the reporter interrupts the live stream to save a dog from the flooding. homes overrun fromting rescues into the night. >> people all night have been in attics and roofs asking for help. >> reporter: at this home in gt

firefighters helping flooded communities in north carolina. the team left oakland monday night including members from the east bay and santa rosa. members of the 129th rescue wing unit of the national guard took off from the base in mountain view to help with the emergency relief efforts after tropical storm florence. the guardsman and helicopter they prepared add doefr air force base to ready to depart finance. this is a satellite loop over north carolina offer the sun began to set. our meteorologists has month on what the residents expect. frances. it's not over. because the storm is so slow moving it's going to inundate the carolinas with rain. here is live doppler 7. you can see the radar satellite looping over the last six hours. barely moving. still continuing to dump so much rain in the carolinas. 50-mile-per-hour. and it's tracking very slowly at 2-mile-per-hour.

chet's family and some injured firefighters. no comment from them. the report does thought state whether the 747 came in too low on its own or whether let in by a spotter plane. either way, it reinforces the danger of fighting fires by air in california in seasons like this. from sonoma county, wayne freedom, abc 7 news. happening today in the east bay, animal who have been left homeless after fires in lake county will be up for adoption. 2,000 pets will be at the 8th annual bay area pet fair. the lake county shelter is bringing all of their adoptable pets. they have been inundated with homeless pets after the fires in the area. the event runs from 10 to 5 today and tomorrow at the lambed county fair grounds. a young people bear burned during the carr fire in shafta county is back in the filed it this morning. the state department of fish and wildlife released the bare yesterday. the department provided the photos. a krou working to fix damaged utility poles spotted the bear a month ago liking burned paws.

sacramento area. and also winds have been pretty gusty out there. in concord up to 25-mile-per-hour. fairfield gusting up to 21 as well as san francisco. so that breeze will bring us some cooler temperatures today. and you can see of the low clouds over frist right now as we look from the exploratorium but we see clear skies out there as well pl temperatures are mostly in the 50s. san francisco 54. oakland 57. san jose 5 a but morgan hill is cool at 49 degrees right now and half moon bay 57. check out the beautiful shot as we look from walnut creek with the scattered high clouds right now passing through parts of the inland east bay area. santa roosz is 53. as well as napa. novato 52 degrees. and upper 50s in concord, fairfield at 57 degrees. this time as we look from one of the other inland area camera shots we see some of the scattered low clouds this morning. it's going to be breezier and cooler compared to yesterday.

and temperatures will be below average into next week. and also winds will pick up this afternoon to about 10 to 25 li 20-mile-per-hour. in some north bay areas we could see gusts up to 30-mile-per-hour. sand rafael might get 22-mile-per-hour winds this evening. so the stronger sea breeze and on shore flow will help temperatures come done a bit compared to yesterday. especially for inland areas. at the coast it's still breezy. in the 60s for the most part. san francisco 64. oakland 68. and san jose 73. but the breeze pushes the clouds away so plenty of sunshine this afternoon. look for santa rosa to hit 77. antioch 76. inland milder compared to yesterday. and the coastal clean uptoday today, grab a jacket because the sea breeze will keep you in the low 60s along the beaches. bodega bay, 60. half moon bay, 62. chilly waters as well.

and upper 60s to near 70 and at the coast the sea breeze keeps you in the low 60s. sun sets at 7:17. a clear evening tonight. but we have more cool temperatures ahead i'll show that you coming up. chris. >> thanks. developing news, flooding the biggest concern this weekend as florence continuing to pummel the carolina coast with strong winds and heavy rain. nearly 1 million people remain without power this morning. the storm turned deadly yesterday claiming the lives of at least 7 people, including a mother and her 8-month-old baby when a massive tree fell on their home in wilmington, north carolina. >> the firefighters were out here in the height of the storm working this rescue basically. and very, very difficult. >> this is woks. if it sits on top of us it will be days before the storm is over but reverysee and months. >> hundreds of people needed to be rescued. florence is expected to be downgraded to a tropical depression by tonight. but the torrential rain shows no

signs of letting up soon. one bay area non-profit is rallying to gather supplies to help thome those displaced in the carolinas carolina. leslie brinkley has the story. >> this is what's ready to ship. >> med shares reg reamingle director walked through the warehouse filled with surplus medical supplies donated by medical providers. >> we have gunnarys, tables. >> along about the personal products here from the public. >> right now our partners have about 34 partners on the ground in the carolinas monitoring the situation as well as some other national partners. and so they're putting together the needs list. >> reporter: volunteers from chevron starting boxing up n 95 masks and gloves likely to top the list of needs. along with things like diapers, shampoo and tooth brushes. >> my mom lives in north carolina and is there now with a lot of flooding. it's home for me. but, yeah, definitely more

people are calling in to want to help us out the. >> reporter: with florence expected to linger and trigger flooding for days to come, med share is on stand by as to how they will get the supplies in the hurricane zone. >> it's a matter of trying to fly it, truck it? >> any means we can. and sometimes, yeah, folks have -- we have been able to put things on air cargo. folks donated private jets, corporate jets in the past even here in san francisco last year someone donated the yacht and put supplies on. >> local medical teams are mobilizing and will carry flies with them on flights as luggage. leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. and if you want to help med share says to gather supplies and collect donations this weekend. you can bring them to med share starting monday morning at 8:30 in san leandro. apple is lending a hand. ceo tim cook tweeted the company is donating $1 million to the red cross to help those impacted by hurricane florence. once again, the american red cross is organizing some of the relief efforts. you can make a $10 donation by

texting the word florence to 90999. the bay area's latest state of the art medical facilit is a step closer to opening. look. a ribbon cutting ceremony took place thursday evening for the morris highman critical care pavilion at washington hospital in fremont. the new intensive and critical care units have 48 beds compared to the current capacity of 28. the emergency room is 224,000 square pete, four times the size of the current facility. even the way it was constructed is state of the art. >> it moves from side to side three feet in every direction. and it also can move up and down, which is kind of hard to imagine. but that's what it is billed at doing. the same seismic system put into the apple campus. >> the project came in on time and on budget as well. there is no set opening date yet.

but officials hope to move patients in by the middle of next month. a well-known surfer who was severely injured in santa cruz is making remarkable progress. broien hart became paralyzed in an accident two months ago. abc 7 news reporter david louie has the inspiring update in a story only on abc 7. >> reporter: it's nothing short of miraculous, the 53-year-old brian hart is out of bed, off a respirator and able to use his chin to control a special chair. nine weeks ago he was paralyzed below the neck after he crashed into rocks at steamer lane in santa cruz while suffering. his 15-year-old son on the left who administered cpr and revived him. >> i came back. i was given a choice. and i came back because i heard my son calling me. and i just couldn't leave my son and wife. and that's all i remember that day. >> adaptive technology is allowing brian to use his chin and royce to operate his
