a bay area professor is saying me too. those new accusations of sexual assault against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh are putting his nomination to the country's highest court in peril tonight. good evening. i'm eric thomas. christine ford came forward today in an interview with "the washington post." hours after that cnn published the letter she sent to diane feinstein about what she describes as an attempted sexual assault by kavanaugh decades ago. it says in part kavanaugh physically pushed me into a bedroom as i was headed for a bathroom up a short stairwell from the living room. they locked the door and played loud music precluding any successful attempt to plead for help. jeff flake and bob corker

expressed a desire to put kavanaugh's confirmation on hold while the senate hear from kavanaugh and his accuser. they're joined by numerous democrats including diane feinstein and kamala >> reporter: the jenkins family just learned their neighbor is the woman accusing supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh of sexual assault. >> so we're surprised. >> i think she for some reason felt she couldn't do it before and she is now. and i think i'm glad she did. >> ford tells "the washington post" the alleged assault happened in the early 1980s when they were high school students in suburban maryland. there was a party. she claims kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and groped her before she could escape. ford tells "the post" i thought

he might inadvertently kill me. kavanaugh says i categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation. ford is a clinical psychology professor at palo alto university. she decided to speak up publicly after her name was leaked. senator diane feinstein said in a statement i support mrs. ford's decision to share her story, and now that she has, it is in the hands of fbi fooconduct an investigation. this should happen before the senate moves forward on this nominee. >> personally i do believe her. >> reporter: stanford law professor led the recall against erin persky. >> given these allegations it's not even clear to me that judge kavanaugh can retain his seat on the d.c. circuit. so the idea of elevating him or

rushing him through in the face of these allegations is just nonsense, and it would be a slap in the face of all women. >> reporter: we try today get a comment from mrs. ford, but no one answered the door. for many people these accusations against brett kavanaugh are bringing back memories of the clarence thomas hearings. lillia? >> reporter: eric, there are similarities for sure starting with the professions of the accusers. christine blazy ford has been a psychology professor at palo alto university for six years. anita hill was also a professor. at the time of the clarence thomas hearings hill taught law. >> the parallels are really striking. >> reporter: she says to a certain degree profession matters. >> yet another professor, so a woman with a pretty high degree of credibility, not that all

women shouldn't be believed, but this is professor, right? and she's passed a lie detector test. >> reporter: of course thomas was ultimately confirmed despite hill's testimony. this time, though, in the wake of the me too movement the outcome may be different. >> and i think a lot of folks have regrets about how anita hill was treated when clarence thomas was up for confirmation. so now there's a chance to kind of make things right and to take a woman's claims seriously this time. >> reporter: the allegations against kavanaugh are more serious against thomas. hill accused thomas of sexual h harassment. ford is accusing kavanaugh of sexual assault. >> if it's just this one incident that happened when they were 15 years old, when they were kids really, people are going to take it less seriously, than if we find out actually there are other women, actually there are other incidents. >> reporter: the confirmation

to more of the towns because of flooded roads. >> and meteorologist drew tuma is tracking where florence is right now. >> and florence has now set new records for both north and south carolina for the most rainfall in a single tropical system. they were measuring in feet over the past couple of days. here's the latest on florence. it is moving quickly to the north, but the damage in the carolinas has already been done. it's moving to the north about 10 miles an hour. the winds right now about 30 miles an hour. the rainfall just in the last four days. ou outside of wilmington they have seen about 2 feet of rain. that's why we're seeing flooding issues there. and as the storm system moves off to the north new england could pick up anywhere from 2 to 3 inches as florence moves off the coast. back here at home we're tracking weather in the coming days.

>> all right, drew, thank you very much. rescue crews also saved several people from flood waters following a typhoon that's been blamed for at least 50 deaths in asia. the storm is set to weaken as it now heads over inland areas of south china. yesterday the typhoon ripped across the philippines. new information tonight about a child in an oakland hospital in a coma said to be fighting for his life. his parents are hoping for a miracle, but they say the hospital is about to pull the plug. we're not hearing from the hospital. 16 month old kingston homes is seen here in better days. he's been at the children's hospital on a breathing machine after suffering a severe brain injury from cardiac arrest at home more than a month ago. they say they can't comment on his condition because of privacy

laws, but they can feel what the family is going through. kingston's parents on friday say the doctors gave them a letter saying his breathing machine will be turned off on thursday due to irreversible brain injury. kingston's parents told us there's been no change in the boy's condition. they're looking into the legal option they have. survivors of clergy sexual abuse plan to urge california's attorney general tomorrow to launch a statewide investigation into how the roman catholic church handled allegations against priests. 12 men claim they were abused as boys at st. martins in the 1970s. current purisheners say they approve of step san jose's bishop is taking. >> naming names is crucial because you hear all these stories about people who have just been relocated from parish

good evening. i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines several key republican senators are asking for the confirmation process for a supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh to be put on hold. this comes a day after a bay area professor stepped forward with accusations she was sexually assaulted by kavanaugh decades ago. palo alto university professor christine ford says the alleged assault happened in the 1980s. the danger in the carolinas is still there. the death toll from the storm has risen to at least 16. over a thousand rescues have been conducted to save people trapped by floodwater.
