>> even some republicans on the committee are wondering if the vote should be postponed. abc's david wright reports. >> reporter: supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh's accuser is stepping forward to describe what she says he did at a high school party back in the early 1980s. christine blasey ford tells "the washington post" that kavanaugh and his prep school friend were stumbling drunk when they corralled her into a room where she says kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her and tried to cover her mouth to prevent her from screaming as the friend watched. i thought she might inadvertently kill me, ford told "the post," adding he tried to attack me and remove my clothing. ford took a polygraph test administered by a former fbi agent in early august. the results of that test reportedly concluded she was telling the truth. ford shared her story confidentially in july with dianne feinstein who forwarded it to the fbi last week. kavanaugh's opponents are calling on him to withdraw his

name from consideration. >> it's pretty much been an intergalactic freak show. >> reporter: senate republicans see it as a desperate democratic attempt to smear kavanaugh. >> this is immaterial to the confirmation process. why hasn't it been discussed among the committee members? >> there were wild accusations about kavanaugh that he's evil, he hates women, he hates children, he hates little warm puppies. >> reporter: kavanaugh has categorically denied the allegations, saying, i did not do this back in high school or at any time. the white house says it is standing with judge kavanaugh's denial. senator feinstein and senate democrats are calling for an investigation before this nomination can come to a vote. senate republicans say they have concerns about the timing of all of this but republican lindsey graham said although he shares those concerns, he'd gladly listen to what she has to say.

david wright, abc news, the white house. >> an interesting monday in washington, d.c. but we turn now to the growing devastation in the carolinas triggered, of course, by florence with the death toll reaching at least 17. >> the storm has weakened to a depression, but millions of people are being warned that the worst flooding is yet to come. a freight train derailed last night in anson county, north carolina. officials there believe heavy downpours and flooding are to blame for this. >> rescuers are in high demand plucking people to safety. some towns could get hit with another 10 inches. crews are scrambling to return power to the more than 500,000 carolinas. swift moving waters turning homes into islands. the dangerous surge prompting more evacuation orders and a

grim message from city officials. >>s ndatory evacuation, you need to do things like notify your legal next of kin because the loss of life is very, very possible. >> reporter: rivers flowing through neighborhoods, swallowing cars. more than 170 roads in north carolina impassable, including two major high waves, leaving some drivers stranded. >> we're stuck here now. >> you can't cross? >> cannot cross. >> reporter: the wrath of florence leaving behind scenes like this in new bern where a washed away boat came crashing into part of a home. 1,000 responders carrying out hundreds of rescues, but the worst of mother nature bringing out the best in human nature. good samaritans rushing to help neighbors and perfect strangers. >> why is it so important for you to help these people? >> i would hope they would do it for me. somebody needs to do it so i'm going to try. >> reporter: more than 600,000 people remain without power, including us, and utility trucks can't get to many of the towns because of flooded roads. >> our thanks to natalie brunell

for safety and cover. a veteran border patrol agent is under arrest in texas, accused of murdering four women. juan david ortiz is being held in laredo on $2.5 million bond. officials say all five women had worked as prostitutes and the first murder occurred two weeks ago. ortiz was arrested after the fifth woman escaped and found a state trooper. investigators believe he acted alone. he is the fourth border patrol agent arrested in laredo just this year alone. a defiant serena williams denying she cheated in the u.s. open final. >> she has sat down for an interview. it comes just over a week after her angry face-off with the chair umpire that included her calling him a thief. williams again said she was the victim of a double standard. >> your coach admitted that he was coaching from the sidelines. >> he said he made a motion.

florence is still making a slow crawl over the carolinas this morning after unloading more than 30 inches of rain and leaving thousands of homes under water. more than 1,000 rescuers are on the move pulling people from the flooded homes and cars. rivers are cresting. hundreds of thousand of people are in the dark and washed out roads have cut off the entire city of wilmington. this morning, we're learning more about that deadly shark attack off the coast of cape cod, massachusetts. >> a young man pulled underwater by a s the first deadly shark attack on cape cod in more than 80 years sending shock waves through this beachside town.

>> we have a report of an unknown shark bite, male party. >> reporter: 26-year-old engineering student arthur medici boogie boarding just 30 yards out when the shark took hold. >> just a giant eruption of water. >> reporter: witnesses telling abc news several off-duty lifeguards leapt into action. >> they are currently carrying the party up to the parking lot. >> reporter: first responders rushing him to the hospital but he did not survive. his heartbroken family remembering him as a happy spirit who will be deeply missed. the fatal encounter only four miles from another violent shark attack last month. the victim, 61-year-old william lytton, still recovery. we've already seen several seals along the shore. experts say that's what's drawing more sharks to the area. >> you've got predators like sharks moving in to try to get to them.

the general public needs to be incredibly vigilant. >> reporter: locals planting sea lavender in the spot where medici was pulled out of the water. painful reminder of the powerful danger lurking beneath the waves. experts warn beach goers to avoid deep water and anywhere seals are spotted. erielle reshef, abc news, cape cod. >> just an awful story. >> absolutely frightening. it was one of the last warm weekends up there in the cape cod area, so a lot of people took advantage of it, but it's a terrible situation there. >> especially for anyone there who saw it. a circus turned scary for kids in pittsburgh when a camel lost control. >> the animal started bucking during a break in the shrine circus like you see there. seven people, including six children, were hurt. one of the kids suffered a broken arm. police say handlers brought the camel back under control in about 10 seconds. investigators aren't sure what startled the animal. that is scary. >> it happened during a period when kids can take rides on the camels and, voila, that's what happened. all right. when we come back, bieber off the market and also an american?

it's often said that disasters and tragedies like the destruction that is still playing out in the carolinas brings out the heros among people. >> and this morning, we're hearing about a chef who is doing what he does best to help those in the hurricane zone. here is tom llamas. >> reporter: the award-winning chef and his team from the nonprofit world central kitchen have set up mobile kitchens in some of the hardest hit areas of north carolina. this one in wilmington. calling themselves the chefs for the carolinas. >> we're going to between both kitchens on the north of 15,000. >> reporter: so far his team has

served 65,000 meals to those hardest hit, to people in shelters and to the first responders. >> when you're wet, when you are cold, the best we can do to show fellow americans that we care is use a humble plate of food. >> reporter: andres and his team went to puerto rico in the aftermath of hurricane maria. he says the plan was to be there for a few days. his team stayed a year, serving nearly 3 million meals. >> what's in our kitchen is good and is bringing everybody together and working as one. >> the rain is really heavy. >> reporter: chef andres shows no sign of slowing down here in north carolina. >> 1,000 meals. we are taking it to -- >> five shelters. >> -- five shelters. >> reporter: once again making a promise to stay for the long haul. >> we're here for america, guys. if anybody's hungry, we're going to feed them. >> got to love the work that he's doing there. if you get to d.c., you've got to love some of his restaurants. they're awesome there. our thanks to abc's tom llamas.
