>> i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. president trump weighed in on the accusations facing kavanaugh a while ago. >> i want him to go in at the absolute highest level, and i think to do that you have to go through this. if it takes a little delay, it will take a little delay. >> that delay will be at least until next week. as late as this afternoon the senate judiciary committee announced a public hearing will take place next monday at 10:00 a.m. >> kavanaugh and palo alto professor christine blasey ford are expected to testify. right now it is not clear if they will be in the same room at the same time. >> "abc 7 news" reporter melanie woodrow is in the newsroom with the latest details kavanaughkavanaug kavanaugh -- ford's accusations. >> "washington post" investigative reporter and uc berkley graduate emma rau said she began speaking with her before the nomination.

>> she was terrified about going public. she didn't want to speak on the record. >> this is a high school photo in 1983, a approximately a year after she says kavanaugh physically and sexually assaulted her at a party when both were teenagers. after kavanaugh's nomination she sent a letter through eshoo's office to senator fine tine stein. as reports about the letter surfaced last week, brown says she had a change of heart about her anonymity. >> she felt like people knew her name and somebody would likely out her. >> she also says ford disclosed the alleged attack to therapists in 2012 and 2013. >> in a time of me too, this is imperative, every single woman should be behind her 100%. >> reporter: karen fleshman is an activist who was arrested three times during kavanaugh's

confirmation hearings. fleshman says she paid a $35 fine each time. >> totally worth it. i would do it again in a heartbeat. >> reporter: she believes kavanaugh should withdraw his nomination. >> we cannot have this man on our supreme court. >> reporter: kavanaugh has said he categorically and unequivocally denies the allegation. president trump praised kavanaugh today as one of the finest people he has ever known and also said he supports going through a full process to hear everybody out. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, "abc 7 news." >> melanie, thank you. christine blasey ford has deep roots in the palo alto area. as far as her accomplishments academically. >> lesley brinkley is at stanford university with more on her background. >> reporter: she is a professor at palo alto university where she teaches ph.d. students in psychology. the school confirmed she is not in class this week and would only say blasey ford is a highly-regarded professor. none of her students or co-workers wanted to comment.

she lives in the south palo alto neighborhood. her social media accounts have all been taken down, but according to an ar kied linkedin page, she got her ph.d. in educational psychology 20 years ago at usc and in 2009 she got a masters in epidemiology and biostatistics here at stanford. >> obviously she is a well-studied, serious person had has been through a lot of academic training. >> reporter: lanny chan is a fellow at stand forward's hoover institute and professor at stanford law school. he also served at mitt romney's policy advisor in his 2012 presidential run. >> you come to this with a republican background. what do you think of the idea this is a democratic employ? >> first of all, the accusations are serious regardless whether they come from a democrat, republican or independent. this is sort of the classic political bombshell that has completely thrown this process off in a way that i think effects not just the likelihood of judge kavanaugh's confirmation, but also has deep

implications for the politics of the midterm elections. >> reporter: he said both sides need to air their take on things publicly. >> it is impossible to divorce what we're seeing today with the kavanaugh nomination from the broader context of the me too movement. >> reporter: at stanford university, i'm lesley brinkley, "abc 7 news." christine ford's attorney spoke with abc news anchor george stephanopoulos today. he asked the question many republicans have been wondering as well. >> why didn't your client come forward earlier? >> most victims with sexual assault and sexual violence never come forward. she came forward when she believed that it was her civic duty to alert her -- her representative and then senator feinstein about her serious concerns, but she first came forward when the then-nominee's name was on a short list. she came forward then because she was very concerned and she had information about serious misconduct that he engaged in

when he was in high school that she thought had a significant bearing on his character. >> ford sent a letter to senator dianne feinstein in july. at the time she asked for confidentiality which is why feinstein did not share the letter with colleagues. >> for many people the accusations against brett kavanaugh are bringing back memories of the confirmation hearing of clarence thomas in 1991. anita hill accused him of workplace harassment. he was ultimately confirmed despite hill's testimony in the senate. >> this is christine blasey ford's high school yearbook picture. if you want to learn more about her background and what brought her to the area, we have it on our website. >> and download the app for her accusations against kavanaugh. we will have complete coverage of the scheduled hearing

starting next monday at 7:00 a.m. our time. you can expect more to happen. enable our news app's push alerts to get breaking updates on your mobile device. a uc berkley professor decided to retire rather than serve a three-year suspension over sexual harassment accusations. the daily cal reports the decision was made through e-mail to a college dean. he was initially suspended three years without pay starting august 13th. he is accused of harassing a graduate student between 2012 and 2014. now to the three students hit by cars across the bay area this morning, including one that left a middle coolschool studen critical condition. more on the one factor all crashes had in common. >> reporter: a ten-year-old from edna hill middle school was truck at this crosswalk not far from the school. >> she was breathing, she was unresponsive. got her medical treatment and obviously they air lifted her to uk davis medical center. >> reporter: police in brentwood said the person in the car was

driving eastbound and their vision may have been obscured by the sun. >> this time of year that's obviously a problem, a concern. >> as a parent telling your child to make sure that you look both ways, that you -- that you get the attention of the driver before you cross the street. >> reporter: similar accidents occurred in antioch. the first accident happened at 7:15 this morning, a 10th grader at antioch high school was dropped off by a parent when she was hit in the crosswalk by a toyota four runner. the driver did not stop and ran off. >> the individual driver sped off but there were witnesses including the parent of the young lady that was the victim. >> reporter: police were able to identify the car and are now looking for the driver. less than an hour later, two cousins were hit in the same crosswalk. this time the driver stopped to help. police say the driver was blinded by the sun. all three students were injured, taken to the hospital and released.

e-mails were sent out to parents asking them to talk to their children about the proper safety measures to take when crossing the street. meanwhile, the school added staff at the crosswalks today. anyone with information on the whereabouts of the hit-and-run driver are being told to call antioch police. li an melendez, "abc 7 news." a family with a six month old son on life support has been given more time before doctors disconnect his breathing machines. "abc 7 news" first brought you their story saturday night as little kingston holmes' parents were making one last plea to keep their son alive at children's hospital oakland. "abc 7 news" reporter carlos saucedo is live at the hospital where families rallied in support. >> reporter: while the family was able to get more time to explore its options, this after the hospital decided to reverse its decision to end life support. >> keep baby kingston alive! >> reporter: a vocal crowd

rallied outside benioff children's hospital in oakland to keep six-month-old kingston holmes on life support. >> my son, he still hasrain function. he is not clinically brain dead. >> reporter: the parents have been praying for a miracle. their baby has been on a ventilator since suffering a severe brain injury due to cardiac arrest at their home six weeks ago. they say they've seen signs of life. >> he is moving. he's wiggling his toes, his feet as well as his hands. >> reporter: but on friday, kingston's parents were given this letter informing them that his life support would be discontinued by 1:00 p.m. today due to irreversible brain injury. they say doctors made the decision without consulting them. >> we wasn't inviting to no meetings, to go -- to have anything to do with the decisionmaking of my son. i don't think that's fair at all. >> reporter: due to patient privacy laws, the hospital cannot specifically comment on kingston's case, but they did send us a statement. it partly reads, quote, every

effort is made to allow the family to grieve while still recognizing that certain patients are unfortunately sent to us in such grave condition that they will not benefit from additional care. they say the parents were notified about the pending decision for weeks but have now decided to give them more time to weigh their options. >> just waiting on kingston to prove him wrong. >> reporter: and i've just learned that kingston is no longer at this hospital. he's been transferred to stanford children's hospital as the family hopes for progress. in oakland, carlos saucedo, "abc 7 news." . much more ahead on "abc 7 news" at 6:00. a tent village in the south bay is standing again tonight for now. next, what officials are doing to find a long-term solution for people living there. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma. a comfortably cool start to the week today but i am tracking warmer weather on the horizon. the numbers in the accuweather forecast ahead. >> thanks, drew. spacex is about to make an

new at 6:00 p.m., sky 7 shows you the scene of a fire that burned dangerously close to businesses in castro valley. it started about an hour ago and charred the side of the gally. its bordered by castro valley boulevard. you see that from sky map 7. a close call but it appears the fire caused no major damage.

also in south bay, negotiations are under way to see if a novel tent village for the homeless can find a permanent home. advocates in san jose quietly created hope village a week ago on an unused parking lot near hedding street and ruff drive south of the airport. the villages seven residents were evicted this morning from the parking lot. "abc 7 news" reporter david louie is live at a temporary new location down the street. right, david? >> reporter: county supervisors have been so impressed by lou clean and orderly hope village is that they see this as a model for people who are priced out of the rental market. supervisors would like to find a permanent place for all of these tents. homeless advocates were convinced they had to do something bold to get attention, setting up a tent village in a state-owned parking lot did just that. after a week, they were told to leave and they got permission to set up for one week outside of seiu union offices a few yards away. >> this is so symbolic of what happens to people that are

living in the street. they get told they have to move and then they move to someplace and then they're told they have to move again and they have to keep moving around. >> reporter: supervisor and cindy chavez are trying to rent an unused parcel from the city of san jose. they're impressed with how clean ard orderly hope village is. >> kudos to them if they can step forward and force the issue a little bit and say, look, we showed you how to organize it, now give us a site to stick around for a little bit. >> if you get a large group of people in the area and we say as a city, you know, this is something we will allow you to be on and somebody brings in a space heater and accidentally starts a fire and there's a tragedy, what is the city's responsibility to the individuals? >> reporter: the county wanted san jose to agree to a new location within 24 hours, but city leaders say discussions take two weeks. they have a previous rent for permanent housing but critics say it takes years. charles nelson knows about homeless sweeps. >> we don't want them near us. they don't want them near us.

they have a concept they'll break in, rob and steal their stuff. no, we just want somewhere to go. we want to be treated like a human being. >> reporter: the san jose mayor's office says they will work with the county to evaluate some potential sites, but they also will consider other options including tiny homes and also motel conversions. live in san jose, david louie, "abc 7 news." >> david, thank you. free cable car rides are costing san francisco money. the report released today find highlights from a year-long investigation. 100 undercover city workers tried to board without paying. nearly a quarter of a time conductors didn't collect fares or look for proof of payment and all almost of the rides conductors missed a passenger when they checked fares costing the city nearly $20 a rider. despite the inconsistencies in payment, city officials say it is an improvement. officials in oakland rolled out a new plan designed to bolster culture in the city.

mayor libby schaff says the cultural development plan will examine the role of art and creativity in the city and best ways to support it. one of the first moves will be adding an artist in resident to advise the city government. >> and in this moment oakland is looking to employ the talent of its artists and to draw on that incredible cultural legacy we have as a city. >> the plan, dubbed "belonging in oakland" is the first cultural blueprint for the city in 30 years. it will include grants to support art-based projects throughout the city. let's turn to the weather forecast, of course around here and a busy weekend of watching hurricane florence in the carolinas. >> let's check in with meteorologist drew tuma. >> for us it is about the braez keeping temperatures well below normal for this time of the year. tomorrow a similar wind, but by wednesday and thursday time frame that wind will bring about warmer air. so if you are craving some

warmth you will like what we have on wednesday and thursday. right now showing you tactive scan, coming up quiet tonight. it is a gorgeous one outside. this live look frur our exploratorium camera atop pier 15 showing you crisp conditions. it was ative story we were dealing with a few weeks ago. look at the satellite image early august. you remember, we were tracking the wildfires across the state. what you are seeing from satellite, all of that haze and smoke across california, we were dealing with bad air quality. fast forward to today, washington happens. clear as could be out there. the satellite image from today showing great air quality, and really the next 24 hours air quality will be on the good side no matter where you live in the bay area. winds right now, it is breezy in san francisco. 32, that current gust in the city. we're at 16 in san jose. 13, that current wind in concord. that wind, once again, keeping the temperatures below average for this time of the year. we are only at 60 in san francisco. 63, that current temperature across the bay in oakland.

68 in san jose. right now concord checking in with a temperature pretty comfortable right now at 73 degrees. overnight tonight, here is the call from accuweather. we will see the clouds first build right along the coast. then after midnight they will spill in and around the bay shoreline. mid to low 50s for most of us. the only exception, the north bay. we have been dealing with this for several mornings, you will drop into the 40s. it will be a crisp start tomorrow morning. on tuesday, we have the cloud cover early on for a lot of us. that cloud cover retreats to the coast midday. it is a breezy day once again. we expect the winds gusting anywhere from 10 to hour by the afternoon. still below average for september standards. highs for tomorrow, similar to where we ended up today. 73 in san jose. about 74 in santa rosa after a morning starting out in the 40s. 78 in concord, and 76 the high in livermore.

future tracker temperatures get you into wednesday, and this is when the wind will bring in warmer air. you look at this inland especially, approaching 90 degrees, even around the bay shoreline. we are in the 70s and 80s, even warmer air moves in on thursday. thursday we're calling it mild to hot across the region. hot because inland we are going well into the 90s again for concord, antioch, and livermore. around the bay shoreline we expect 70s and 80s with temperatures above average to finish out the week. here is the accuweather forecast. it is cool and breezy on tuesday and temperatures rebound on wednesday. it is warmer around here by thursday. it is warm to hot across the region. it will feel warmer since it has been so cool for the month of september. fall officially begins on saturday, and temperatures will respond appropriately going back to average by sunday into monday. >> good. thanks, drew. >> sure. >> thank you. uploading classroom is in the san francisco bay tonight ahead of the unique journey back

the pacific from hawaii to san francisco. they caught fish along the way to fill out their meals and managed to sleep on board when the seas were calm, which wasn't always the case. >> we've had some rough weather. in fact, coming into california was almost the roughest weather i have sailed in, where i just thought, is there an end to this one. there were about 35-knot winds coming from the north as our last 12-hour approach into land, and we took -- certainly took some hard hits. >> the traditional polynesian craft will be on the hyde street pier for two more days, then sausalito, half moon bay and monterey. the crew plans to return to hawaii in december. >> that's beautiful. >> isn't it? >> yeah. all right. researchers think they figured out one reason california's great white sharks head to a spot known as white shark cafe. >> apparently, as you might not be too surprised to hear, the answer is food. according to sf gate, researchers withstand forward and monterey bay aquarium traveled to the bay area between

live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." crumbled roads and flooded neighborhoods left in the wake of florence. the storm has subsided but the death toll is rising and several more days of flooding are expected. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. at least 32 people in the carolinas have died in the

aftermath of what is now tropical depression florence. >> abc news reporter marcy gonzalez is following the latest developments live from wilmington, north carolina. marcy. >> reporter: yeah, dan and kristen, the rain has finally stopped falling but it is a tough situation here. hundreds of thousands of people are still without power. food, bottled water and fuel are hard to come by and so many are dealing with this dangerous ongoing flooding crisis. creeks and rivers still rising, inundating entire communities. rescue teams here from across the country out again today, pulling people from submerged cars and flooded homes. this photo journalist from abc affiliate wsb spepg in to help, rescuing this stranded driver. >> like it just pulled me in and i couldn't stop it. i had my foot on the brake, but it wouldn't stop. >> reporter: these dogs trapped in the flooding among the hundreds of pets rescued so far. >> come on, puppy. >> the crisis in north carolina

continues. for many parts of north carolina, the danger is still immediate. >> reporter: in community after community, including here in wilmington, long lines for the essentials. >> really. >> we don't have no ice, no lights, no nothing. >> reporter: thousands of homes in the carolinas now damaged or destroyed and the death toll in florence's aftermath still climbing. among the victims, three-month-old cade gill, killed when a tree crashed into his family's living room, and one-year-old caiden lee welsh, his mother losing her grip on him after her car was swept away. >> this mama has suffered tragically when she lost a child. these were dangerous times. >> reporter: and dangers like that are exactly why officials keep urging people here to stay off the roads. at least 1200 roadways are now closed in north carolina alone, and the flooding in some places expected to keep getting worse. we're live in wilmington, north

carolina, marcy gonzalez, "abc 7 news." >> all right, marcy. >> the pictures coming out of there are stunning. thanks very much. still having an impact. let's check in with meteorologist drew tuma to see what is left of florence and what is happening now. >> yeah, kristen and dan, as florence moves away from the carolinas, new threats emerge, especially in the mid atlantic and new england as flooding could be the big concern over the next hours. florence showing you the rain has arrived across portions of pennsylvania and new york. it is no longer a wind threat. it is now a rain threat. it is for that fact -- look at this, we have flood watches and warning stretching up and down the east coast. flood warning mean flooding is happening. that is across the carolinas. flash flood watches mean that it could happen, and that's what they have across the mid atlantic and new england for good reason. look at the additional rainfall we could see over the next 48 hours. some spots across pennsylvania, new jersey and new york could see anywhere from two to potentially five inches of rain

in a short amount of time. dan, kristen. >> okay. drew, thank you. a deputy is dead and another is injured in a shooting this afternoon in sacramento county. the sheriff's department there says 27-year-old deputy mark sasiak was shot in the upper body and sadly later died. the other deputy was shot in the arm and is expected to survive. gunfire first broke out at a pep boy's auto repair shop and ended in a nearby parking lot. the suspect and a bystander were shot. their conditions are unknown tonight. new at 6:00, oakland police releasing body camera video showing a deadly police involved shooting. it happened in june 2015. officers discovered 30-year-old demoria hogg unconscious in a car. video shows them trying to wake him up over an hour. then officer nicole rhodes goes up to the car with her gun drawn. officers break the window.

she yells, put your hands up before firing two shots. she claimed hogg reached for a gun on the roads was clear rhodes was cleared in 2015. >> tom arnold is accusing mark bar net of attacking him at a party last night. reporter rob hayes has the story. >> reporter: the emmys may be tonight but the drama was yesterday. >> this is a guy worth hundreds of millions of dollars, mark burnett, who tried to murder me. >> reporter: that's tom arnold, and the mark burnett he is talking about is this mark burnett, the mega-producer who brought us "shark tank"." >> we got a deal. >> reporter: "survivor" and donald trump's former reality show "the apprentice." >> you're fired. go. >> reporter: that's the show arnold is upset about.

he is the host of a cable tv show that premieres tuesday. in the show arnold searches for tapes that prove he used racial slurs on the set. burnett has those tapes. >> he could show america right now. he is hurting america. >> reporter: now arnold says burnett hurt him, the two men coming across each other at the evening before the emmys in central city. >> i think he thinks he's going to scare me and he latches on to me. i haven't gotten to the top of the stairs of the party and he goes -- and he started to choke me out. a social media spectacle, arnold tweeting burnett attacked him. burnett's wife, tweeting this out.

pressure is mounting tonight on the governor to veto a bill that would give b.a.r.t more control over housing projects on land it owns at 20 stations around the bay area. "abc 7 news" reporter laura anthony has the story now from dublin. >> there's the right way to do things and then there's the b.a.r.t way of doing things. >> reporter: local leaders from alameda and contra costa counties gathered at the dublin b.a.r.t station to send a loud, last-ditch message to governor jerry brown. >> governor brown, ab 2923 is a bill that you should not sign. >> reporter: assembly bill 2923 would give b.a.r.t greater control of its own land, 250 acres system wide, potentially expediting the

system's goal of building 20,000 new housing units by 2040. >> the problem is it is just too expensive. >> reporter: b.a.r.t director nick is a strong supporter of ab 2923. he says 35% of the housing some 7,000 units would be offered below market rate. >> what this bill would allow b.a.r.t. to do is just to do it quicker and more effectively, to respond to the enormous need in the region. >> for me, this is mission drift. b.a.r.t should be focusing its time and energy on running a great transit system. >> i believe that local people who live here are the ones that should decide what our local community looks like, not somebody in sacramento or not somebody on a b.a.r.t board. >> reporter: in walnut creek, a mixed use transit village is already under construction, perhaps a model for other b.a.r.t stations where asphalt parking lots could become largely obsolete.
