♪ live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." there's now a standoff in the brett kavanaugh sexual assault hearing. this as president trump for the very first time is possibly hinting the supreme court nomination could be in jeopardy. thanks for joining us. i'm kristein sze. the accuser, christine blasey ford, says her life has been turned upside down and the palo alto professor doesn't want to appear before the senate committee until the fbi conducts and completes an investigation. abc news reporter elana zach is live in d.c. with the latest. >> reporter: hi there, kristen. during the clearance thomas nomination, president bush had asked the fbi to do a complete

background check and investigation into the claims made by then anita hill who is accusing clarence thomas of sexual assault or of sexual harassment at the time, but president trump at this moment says that he is still not willing to do the same. president trump says he is still skeptical of the accusation against judge brett kavanaugh. >> i can only say this. he's such an outstanding man. very hard for me to imagine that anything happened. >> reporter: but for the first time he seemed to suggest kavanaugh's nomination could be in jeopardy. >> if she shows up and makes a credible showing, that will be very interesting, and we'll have to make a decision. >> reporter: dr. christine blasey ford argues as a stumbling drunk teen in the 1980s kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a party while bother hh school studes. kavanah strony die the allegation. the chairman of the senate judiciary committee chuck grassley scheduled a hearing for next week, but on tuesday night blasey ford's attorney sent him a letter writing while dr. ford's life was being turned

upside down you and your staff scheduled a public hearing for her to testify at the same table as judge kavanaugh to relive this harrowing incident. an fbi investigation should be the first step in addressing allegations. while senators may be looking back at history for how to proceed with these allegations, anita hill suggests they take their time. >> my advice is to push the pause button on this hearing, get the information together. >> reporter: now, what happens if she chooses not to testify? well, i spoke with senator grassley's staff. they told me at this point the senator is not willing to say what next steps he intends to take, but he says that the invitation remains open, and he's encouraging everyone, republicans and democrats, not to insult or threaten dr. blasey ford but to be respectful of the process. reporting live from washington, lana zach, abc 7 news. >> lana, thank you. we're sending push alerts on the latest updates on the kavanaugh

accusation and confirmation. get them on the phone by downloading the abc 7 news app and you can also customize which alerts you want to see. breaking news out of wisconsin. there are reports of an active shooter near madison and five people have been shot. the shooting took place at a software company in middleton. middleton has a population of under 20,000 and is just west of madison. that's the state capital. police are urging people who live in the immediate area to stay inside and shelter in place. one injury is non-life-threatening. it's not clear the condition of the other four people. we will stay on top of the story and bring you updates as soon as we have more information. and new this morning, the man accused of murdering mollie tibbetts pled guilty. christian rivera waived his wife after pleading guilty of first-degree murder. this is video of the suspect in court just a little while ago.

t tibbetts went missing after going for a run in her hometown in iowa. the woman accused of kidnapping elizabeth smart from her home in 2002 has been released from prison. 72-year-old wanda barzee was freed after serving 15 years because utah authorities miscalculated amount of time she should serve. she will now be under federal supervision for five years. smart says bardsee remains a danger since she encouraged her husband to rape a teen. a pilot program is coming to minutia san jose international airport to beef up security and keep passengers safer, this after the airport was breached by stowaways and trespassers the past few years. abc 7 news reporter matt keller joins us live from the airport with more. matt? >> reporter: kristen, one thing that has happened as has nothing to do with technology is they raised the fences here around the perimeter to 11 feet. they did that after several security breeches, but now a new program using high tech to try to keep san jose's airports safe. you think airport are

fortresses. try getting past security without your i.d. and boarding pass and during one stretch a year ago security breeches were not uncommon at mineta san jose international airport. five in about a year, including in april 2014, when a 15-year-old boy climb into the wheel well of a plane that then flew to a had a, and in april 2015 a woman hopped a fence and ended up in a secure cargo area. flash forward more than three years and the tsa selected san jose along with miami international airport to test new perimeter intrusion detection and deterrence technologies. >> tsa will come out and do a full study of our perimeter and determine how can they use technology to continue to reinforce our perimeter here? >> reporter: san jose's airport is getting up to $4 million for the program. some of the security technology being tested included video cameras, analytic software, laser, fence and ground sensors to monitor large areas for potential intruders and infrared sensors. san jose congresswoman sew

lofgren says by bolstering the technology deployed to keep our airport perimeter safe we're taking steps to ensure safety of businesses and travelers and helping to have minutia as the gateway in silicon valley. >> with the study and implementation here in miami, then they can take the best practices and then deploy them at other u.s. airports. >> rporter: airport efficient expect installation of the equipment to start by the end of the yore and the study to be completed by next summer. reporting hive in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you so much. developing news in san francisco where police are investigating a deadly shooting in the outer sunset neighborhood. it happened in the area of 46th avenue and marauga street just before 9:00. police found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. the victim was transported to the high school where he died. so far no arrest have been made. if someone you know is calling or texting you about a lot of first responders at sfo, tell them don't be too alarmed

because happenng now there's a full-scale emergency exercise taking place there at the airport, and it runs until noon. this is video from last year's simulation. this year's annual exercise will simulate a crash landing in the bay. several agencies are taking part including the san francisco fire department, police department and several mutual aid units from around the bay area. students and parents in the oakland unified school district are celebrating some good news. the state is putting up money so that students don't have to worry as much about getting to and from school. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live hat west lake middle school with more on this boost to transit. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning, kristen. this is temporary good news. it's a bailout. this is not a long-term solution, but all of the people gathered here at a press conference just a few moments ago were very relieved and grateful to be making this announcement. the group of lawmakers, the educators, the mayor was here, all here to announce that ac transit will be able to continue

to take kids to school in oakland through the 2019-2020 school year. it was looking like they would have to end the service. oakland's schools announce it had couldn't keep a 20-year long agreement with ac transit because of funding issues, but state senator nancy skinner managed to find $1 million to keep the buses rolling. some call her the budget wizard. >> every student deserves safe and reliable transportation to get to school, and, unfortunately, the state and funding of our schools does not provide adequate funding, and we have many school districts that do not provide bus service. some do. some do, but some do not. >> reporter: the mayor was here and said she was exbeing teamly grateful for this money, especially because this money keeps buses running to her alma mater, skyline high school. ac transit takes kids to three schools up in the oakland hills that are off of the buses' usual

president trump renewed his attacks today on jeff sessions saying, quote, i don't have an attorney general. the president told hill.tv that he's quote so sad over jeff sessions. mr. trump has repeatedly denouncing the alabama senator from recusing himself from the russia investigation saying he didn't need to do so but justice department guidelines recommend he should because of his contacts with russian officials during the 2016 campaign. two brand-new polls out this morning are showing us where the race for governor and the race for u.s. senate stand just 48 days before election day. so let's start with the race for governor here. democrat gavin newsom against republican john cox. the new poll shows if the election were held today, newsom would beat cox handley 52% to 40% and democrat verse democrat diane fine stein against dedeleone, if the election were today feinstein would get 44%

with pg&e in the sierras. and i'm an arborist since the onset of the drought, more than 129 million trees have died in california. pg&e prunes and removes over a million trees every year to ensure that hazardous trees can't impact power lines. and since the onset of the drought we've doubled our efforts. i grew up in the forests out in this area and honestly it's heartbreaking to see all these trees dying. what guides me is ensuring that the public is going to be safer and that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future.

we have breaking news right now from half moon bay. students at kuna intermediate school have been sent home. you can see on this map on church street, the sante matteo county sheriff's office telling us it's investigating an incident on campus. that is all they will say for now. people are being asked to stay out of the area. students have been sent home at kuna intermediate school. we'll update the story on the abc 7 news app.

>> all right, hi, everybody. we know that the president is spending part of his day in north carolina visiting people impacted by hurricane florence and its aftermath. abc's marcy gonzalez is live in wilmington with the latest on his visit and the ongoing crisis. marcy? >> reporter: hey there, mike. yeah. the president is here getting a firsthand look at what so many people here have been dealing with for days. he's witt itting with survivors and handing out meals, and he's promising the federal government and resources will be here to help 100%. president trump in north carolina visiting some of the communities hit hardest by florence and the devastating flooding that's followed. >> some of the flooding is actually epic, hard to believe. >> reporter: more than a dozen rivers still at record flooding levels, inundating communities, stranding people in homes and vehicles. the death toll still climbing. two women in police custody restrained inside this transport

lives will be back to normal, if you will in months, while the rest of them may take yearsance, so the american red cross is organizing a relief effort for those people affected by florence. can you make a $10 donation by texting the word florence to 9099. all it takes is $10. thousands of people do that. think of all the money we could raise to help those folks. all right. let's talk about what's going on back here at home. got an issue. a little bit of an offshore breeze. a northerly wind developing overnight, especially over the north bay mountains. that's where starting at 11:00 tonight through 5:00 tomorrow afternoon a higher fire danger thanks to the northerly winds and also the low humidity, and hopefully that will be it for now. you can see we had one in the central valley. not sure what happened to it. it was supposed to start at 7:00 and go through 5:00. i'll have to double check that one. as far as back here at home, let's take a look at winds. 6:00 this evening, fastest along the coast and that's also bring you so much sunshine today. look what happens by 2:00 in the morning. yeah, can you just see the winds

develop 20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts during the overnight. going to be noisy for some of us in the north bay. maybe not the most ideal sleeping weather. waking up in the morning, still blowing hard and as they go through the day they will start to relax and so will the fire danger. the north bay is seeing the biggest difference in temperature, anywhere from 4 to 9 degrees warmer than 24 hours putting your temperatures in the mid-60s to 70. a lot of low to mid-60s in the bay and 70s into the east bay where we've seen the sun the longest. look from the golden gate bridge, and look at that flag on the right, barely move. that's what helping the warming trend today. we'll be average to above average all seven days of my forecast with the warmth of maybe monday and tuesday it reaches the coast. the latest models are starting to show a little bit of an offshore flow. you can see the high pressure building in, and you can see the way it's taking away the cloud cover. take a look at temperatures. mid to upper 70s for the south bay and then we've got 80 to 88 degrees. 71 in milbury and mid to upper

70s for most of the peninsula. mid-60s along the coast this afternoon to 70 in downtown san francisco. low to mid-80s through most of the north bay and the farther north you go you get up to 88 in cloverdale. mid-70s. 73 to 76 all along the east bay shore, and as you move inland not quite. air conditioning weather yet. mid to tupper 80s and you're the first to see the 90s tomorrow. magic number is 7 to khalidify the wild card playoff spot for the a's. 65 at most of us will drop into the low to upper 50s during the overnight hours. a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. look at the 90s sprinkled throughout the mid-80s and mid-90s. even low 80s around the bay, but notice the coast right now. we're keeping it in the 60s. keep an eye on monday and tuesday. if it does get warm at the coast, those will be the two days. >> all right. folks will head out to the
