theme to this woman who says she was a victim of sexual assault, show up to testify or we will head to a vote without your voice. republicans are moving ahead with the hearing monday to consider sexual assault allegations against brett kavanaugh and have given his accuser a friday deadline to decide if she will testify. >> we're not going to cancel any hearing until the last minute. >> christine blasey ford alleges that brett kavanaugh tried to sexually assault her when the two were high school students. kavanaugh has denied the charges. >> the american people need to see dr. ford side by side with judge kavanaugh and judge for themselves. >> gop leaders in the senate say they want ford to testify. but have rejected calls from her attorneys and other democrats br attorneys and other democrats who say an fbi investigation needs to happen first. >> i'm just absolutely stunned at why we are so -- why the republicans and the president is opposed to letting the fbi do what the fbi has done for decades. >> reporter: ford has not agreed to appear. and in a letter, her lawyers say

there's fear. her family had to move from their home and that she has been the target of vicious harassment, even death threats. her lawyers also say it would be difficult for her to face interrogation by senators who appear to have made up their minds. >> if republicans attack dr. ford and this turns into anything like what we saw back in 1991, women across the country are going to rise up, make their voices heard and republicans will pay a very huge price. >> reporter: the president has the power to order an investigation, but he has declined. >> i can only say this, he is such an outstanding man. very hard for me to imagine that anything happened. >> reporter: the attention is on chairman chuck grassley now. how will they handle the sensitive nature of these allegations and the political implications of this confirmation? janai. >> zachary, thank you. and attorney jeff sessions heaped praise on president trump even after getting slammed by one of his fiercest attacks yet. during a new interview the

president said, quote, i don't have an attorney general. he criticized sessions' performance at his confirmation hearing and complained about how he's handling border security. despite the attack sessions spoke wednesday praising the president's leadership. we move to the slow recovery from hurricane florence. with rivers still rising and thousands of people unable to return home, there are growing concerns about the environmental and economic impacts of the storm. everyone from farmers to people in the market for a used car will feel the effects. this morning, a major concern in the storm zone. widespread devastation to farms and industrial sites in parts of north carolina with conditions so bad inspectors still unable to visit the hardest hit areas to test the water amid reports of toxic waste and sewage spills. >> some of the flooding is actually epic. hard to believe. >> reporter: president trump handing out hot meals and hugs getting a firsthand look at the

devastation, thanking first responders and volunteer rescuers who saved more than 4,000 people from floodwaters across the state. the water still rising in many areas this morning. the coast guard rescuing these residents of a south carolina apartment complex. more than 800 roads remain closed with nearly 200,000 homes and businesses without power. the impact on farmers, stunning with new estimates of at least 3 million chickens and more than 5,500 pigs dead. >> in moments of despair we witness the true character of the american people. so true. citizens all across our country rallied together to rescue the stranded to protect the innocent and to restore hope to families who have experienced tremendous and unbearable loss. >> reporter: damages could top $22 billion and that includes up to 40,000 cars destroyed or damaged in the storm. already just like hurricane

harvey last year, experts are warning used car buyers across the country to be aware of scams of those trying to resell flooded cars. the surging demand for replacement cars in the carolinas is now expected to fuel a spike in prices in much of the country. and experts say, if you're in the market for a used car, consider waiting about a month when the storm's impact on prices should be over. well, counselors will be on hand at a wisconsin software company where an employee suddenly opened fire on his co-workers. police say the shooter was near his cubicle when he pulled out a semiautomatic pistol and started shooting. that sent employees running for the doors shocking the normally quiet community. >> this is real strange for me because, like i told you, i'm from the netherlands and we see it on tv but then when you are next to it, it's bizarre. it's middleton. i mean it's a small town and you don't expect it here. yeah, it can happen anywhere.

>> police say within eight minutes of the first 911 call they were able to shoot and kill the gunman. four people were hurt. three seriously, so far no word on a motive. in pennsylvania, police shot and killed a man they say opened fire in the lobby of a courthouse south of pittsburgh. witnesses say the shooter walked in with his gun drawn and exchanged fire with the police officer. he had been scheduled for an assault hearing. the officer and three other people were injured. dozens of elderly people are out of their homes this morning displaced by a fast-moving fire at their housing complex in washington, d.c. flames burst from the roof. some residents say the fire alarms and sprinklers never went off. but i'll tell you who was there, marines from a nearby barracks ran to the scene helping fire crews rescue the trapped residents. four people suffered minor injuries. time now for a look at your weather for this thursday morning. severe weather is moving through the midwest right now. on radar you can see the strong storms stretching from colorado to the great lakes.

>> it's no secret that great white sharks are swimming off cape cod but these fishermen got extra close. a shark stole their fish right off the line about ten feet from their boat. they say the shark appeared to come out of nowhere. well, a manhunt is under way in washington, d.c. after the shocking murder of a jogger on the street. 35-year-old wendy martinez was stabbed while out for a run tuesday night in logan circle. she managed to stagger into a restaurant before collapsing. police say her suspected killer was seen on surveillance video. they say the attack appears to be random which has neighbors even more frightened. >> this is actually part of my safe route at night. >> i think about how scary it must have been for her, and it's scary for everyone. >> i live less than a block away and i mean she could have been me. i'm 35.

i run every day. >> that is frightening. her family says martinez got engaged just last week. a $25,000 reward is now offered in the case. well, ticketmaster is being accused of colluding with scalpers. journalists in toronto who ran an undercover investigation say ticketmaster recruits scalpers to buy millions of concert tickets and those are then resold on the company's platform called trade desk. ticketmaster reportedly collects fees both from the sale and resale and then changes their prices based on demand. in response ticketmaster said it does not own the tickets sold nor does it control pricing. another major airline is raising baggage fees. delta will now charge $30 for the first bag you check, $40 for the second bag. this brings delta in line with recent fee increases at united and jetblue. expect to see a lot more stores in the future without cashiers. amazon is reportedly planning to open 3,000 amazon go stores by 2021.

in the real world. >> reporter: dixon was found guilty of murder in the 1991 shooting death of a teenager. the system failing dixon. being convicted with no physical evidence against him and even after another man confessed to the crime. while behind bars, dixon rekindled his childhood passion for drawing often spending ten hours creating pencil landscapes of golf courses. the magazine "golf digest" featured his story and his meticulous drawings. the article caught the attention of students at georgetown university's prison reform course and the class then worked with dixon's attorney to get his conviction overturned. >> we want to get more people out. we want to take on more wrongful conviction cases. the message is our criminal justice system is deeply flawed. it makes mistakes all the time. >> reporter: after a three-month investigation by the district attorney, a judge accepted a guilty plea from the man who originally confessed to the murder, lamar scott. the district attorney says while he's glad dixon is being released for a murder he did not commit, he says dixon is still not an innocent man.

>> don't be misguided in that at all, okay. mr. dixon is innocent of the shooting and of the murder for what he was found guilty of. but mr. dixon brought the gun to the fight. >> reporter: that weapons charge wasn't dropped, but dixon already served enough time to cover the charge. >> god always -- he tests all of us. you know, god tests all of us and that you never know what the test is going to be or how long that the test is going to last. you just got to hang in there. >> reporter: 48-year-old dixon plans to continue drawing and despite all those golf courses he's drawn, he said he's never played a round of golf. >> interesting. well, dallas mavericks owner mark cuban is taking action after an investigation confirmed his organization had a long culture of sexual harassment. investigators found no evidence that cuban was aware of the most explosive allegations against the team's former president. they say cuban rarely entered
