oquendo. >> reporter: new questions about security at our nation's airports after a student pilot allegedly hopped a barbed wire fence and boarded this american airlines plane in the middle of the night. 22-year-old nishal sankat faces several charges, including criminal attempt to steal an airplane. >> within two minutes, we stopped this guy getting in the air. >> reporter: authorities say sankat drove to the curb outside the airport around 1:30 a.m., left the car running and soon after was on the empty airbus 321 undergoing maintenance. two technicians tackled him, tried holding him to the ground but he broke free and took off on the tarmac. after checking for explosives but finding none, police towing the suspect's car away. >> oh, my god. is he okay? >> reporter: just last month, a baggage handler stole this passenger airliner, taking off and performing dangerous stunts

kavanaugh's accuser wants the nominee to testify before she does. >> attorneys for professor christine blasey ford are open to a hearing next week but not monday, and sources say they also raise the possibility of subpoenas for other witnesses, including the other person ford says was in the room during the alleged assault. at a rally in las vegas last night, president trump said kavanaugh was one of the finest people you'd ever know and he asked why didn't somebody call the fbi 36 years ago? abc's kenneth moton has more on the showdown. >> you're unlawfully demonstrating. >> reporter: protests and arrests on capitol hill thursday, demonstrations against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. >> we believe dr. blasey. >> reporter: and in support of his accuser christine blasey ford, who is now willing to tell the senate kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school in the '80s. blasey ford's attorney writing in an e-mail to the senate judiciary committee, she wishes to testify, provided we can agree on terms that are fair and which ensure her safety. the california professor and her

janai and kendis? >> kenneth, our thanks to you. congress has just over a week to avoid a government shutdown. president trump is demanding more money for his border wall. he called the spending bill ridiculous in a tweet and asked, where's the money for border security? during last night's rally, the president complained again that democrats were getting in the way but he stopped short of threatening to shut down the government. and stocks opened this morning at an all-time high. the dow and s&p 500 both said records. tech, banks and health care accounted for much of the run and a growing u.s. economy is expected to keep the rally going despite the tariff battles with china and others, asian markets are also higher this morning on the good news. former trump attorney michael cohen has acknowledged that he is providing critical information in the russia investigation. >> he tweeted about his cooperation last night after abc news reported that he spent hours talking to robert mueller's team. here is abc's brad mielke. >> hey, guys. you might remember michael cohen's plea deal did not actually require him to

cooperate with investigators, and yet sources tell abc news he has been talking a lot, including to special counsel robert mueller. it was george stephanopoulos who broke this story, so i called him up and asked him. >> we didn't even know that robert mueller was talking to him. now we know that he was apparently very interested. cohen has spent multiple hours over multiple sessions talking to mueller's team about all aspects of president trump's relationship with russia. that means a lot. that means possible collusion between the trump campaign, associates of the trump campaign and the russians. that means president trump's financial and business dealings with russia. remember, it was michael cohen who was trying to work with president trump to build that trump tower in moscow, and that's a red line the president said that mueller shouldn't cross, looking at business dealings. and finally we also know that he's been asked about whether there were -- had been any discussions between him and the president's team or the

president about a possible pardon. that gets into obstruction of justice. so this is significant. it's several hours of cooperation. multiple sessions. and it doesn't appear to be over. >> now, george went on to list all the people who have been cooperating and said at this point if you're involved in this investigation and prosecutors haven't been talking to you, maybe you should be nervous. we will have much more on this abc news exclusive later this morning on "start here." check it out on apple podcasts or your favorite podcasting app. kendis, janai? >> it does look like a lot of people are talking, indeed. brad, thank you. officials say it will be at least a week before even the major interstates are completely re-opened through the carolinas. this is a week after hurricane florence made landfall. the runoff is pushing many rivers still over their banks. abc's marcus moore reports. >> reporter: the water is rising across new areas of the carolinas. officials going door-to-door near florence, south carolina. >> this area is going to be prone to flooding and it's highly advised you leave.

>> reporter: using boats to get people to dry land near myrtle beach. this man watching the water rise again. >> there is nothing you can do. just pray to the man above. >> reporter: he says he and many of his neighbors don't have flood insurance and he's not alone. federal flood insurance is a cost many cannot bear. across the state, just 3% of properties have it. firefighters from out of state helping clean up local first responders' homes. many have been away since the storm hit. fire ants and venomous snakes in the water, our team taking samples after officials told us the water could also be toxic. and because the conditions here are changing so quickly, the highway patrol has warned drivers their gps could lead them directly into floodwaters, so they're urging motorists to stay off the roadways. marcus moore, abc news, north carolina. intense flash flooding is also a problem in mexico, forcing thousands of families from their homes in the mexican state of sinaloa.

many homes, businesses and streets are under water thanks to heavy pounding rains brought on by a tropical depression. it's not over yet. the forecast is calling for up to another 10 inches over the next few days. one year after hurricane maria thundered ashore, puerto rico is still struggling to recover from the devastation left behind. religious and government leaders marked the day, noting the estimated $100 billion in damage and paying tribute to the nearly 3,000 people who died. tens of thousands still have no adequate shelter or reliable electrical power, but abc's lynda lopez says there are signs of recovery. >> reporter: so this is the bridge that had been completely destroyed and completely washed away by hurricane maria, and a year ago we saw people string a rope across this water just so they could access the town. and now, one year later after hurricane maria, this bridge is completely rebuilt and completely back in use. >> so some good news there.

and bolivia one of the poorest countries in south america hopes it will revolutionize its economy by becoming the saudi arabia of lithium. the flats provide the base material used to create everything from this art to local five-star hotels where everything is made of salt. the walls, the floors, even the furniture. providing a livelihood for some of the locals. each day these brothers, moises and eric, hop in their truck and navigate the barren landscape to work on this slice of salar, their work site. they're known as salt miners, chopping, sawing and stacking each block of salt for sale. each brick sells for about 50 cents. it won't make them wealthy but it's enough to support their young families.

just an hour away, still out in the salar, another entity is making money from the land, the government. this is bolivia's secretive pilot lithium plant. 155 square miles have been set aside to house its expanding facilities. like many national treasures, its vast length protected by the military. and this is what's so closely guarded, lithium carbonate. it's like white gold that the plant exports for about $25,000 a ton to countries like the u.s., russia and japan. in 2018, this factory is expected to process 200 tons of lithium, but that number will explode to 15,000 tons once a larger neighboring plant is finished next year. that's an increase of 750%.

president trump has identified the remains of two u.s. soldiers killed during the korean war turned over by north korea. they include the army master sergeant charles mcdaniel. he was a medic from vernon, indiana. and 19-year-old william jones, an army private first-class from nash county, north carolina. the remains were among 55 transfer cases arriving in hawaii for what's called an honorary carry ceremony. a terrifying morning at a rite aid facility outside of baltimore ended with a woman killing three of her co-workers. police in aberdeen, maryland, say she shot a total of six people before killing herself. investigators don't have a motive. witnesses say it was sparked by an argument. deputies say the alleged shooter was a temporary worker at the facility. witnesses say she just started firing. >> it's really scary when it's brought to your doorstep like that. this is usually a very calm area. >> i can't even fear -- i was just so scared. >> thursday's shooting came the

day after a gunman in wisconsin shot four co-workers before being killed by police. three of those victims are still in the hospital. the flooding emergency in the carolinas isn't over and may even grow worse. hurricane florence made landfall a week ago but rivers are still flooding. hundreds of roads are still blocked off, including interstate 40 and parts of interstate 95. it will be at least a week before those major highways do get to re-open. only 3% of the homeowners in north carolina have federal flooding insurance. the nfl's carolina panthers are donating $1.5 million to flood relief and so is michael jordan donating as well. speaking of jordan, the team he owns, the nba's charlotte hornets are also donating millions to flood relief. this is the scene in wallace, north carolina, where jordan's father grew up. look at the difference between wallace now and last spring. jordan himself grew up in nearby wilmington, which is now an island. nearly all roads in and out of that area are shut by flooding.

meanwhile, severe storms are rolling through the plains and midwest. a tornado reportedly touched down briefly in middlefield township. some buildings and utility poles were damaged. extreme weather stretches across the canadian border from montana to new york, with a line of severe storms coming up from wichita to meet at minneapolis. that cold front will bring severe storms from pittsburgh to northern vermont this evening. so the dogs of war were on display in south america and they're absolutely adorable. >> nine golden retriever puppies were part of a military parade in chile. they are the youngest and newest members of the country's canine training unit. the temperature was only in the mid-60s so that's why you see the puppies kept warm in the special heated carriers. the adult dogs also in the parade wearing some little booties that are adorable. >> so do they, like, kill you with kindness? >> with snuggles. >> is that what they do?

>> reporter: new questions about security at our nation's airports after a student pilot allegedly hopped a barbed wire fence and boarded this american airlines plane in the middle of the night. 22-year-old nishal sankat faces several charges, including criminal attempt to steal an airplane. >> within two minutes, we stopped this guy getting in the air. >> reporter: authorities say sankat drove to the curb outside the airport around 1:30 a.m., left the car running and soon after was on the empty airbus 321 undergoing maintenance. two technicians tackled him, tried holding him to the ground but he broke free and took off on the tarmac. after checking for explosives but finding none, police towing the suspect's car away. >> oh, my god. is he okay? >> reporter: just last month, a baggage handler stole this passenger airliner, taking off and performing dangerous stunts and loops before crashing.
