>> announcer: this is abc 7 mornings. and good morning it's september 22nd. i'm kate larson in for chris nguyen this morning. we are starting with a quick look at weather with meteorologist lisa argen who is here to explain what the last few hours of summer look like. >> that's right, kate. we have a cooling trend under way, got started yesterday. you can see live doppler 7, the fog well into the east bay fog from hayward and napa. and a system to the north of us is keeping us cooler than average through tomorrow. there is the visibility in miles. half mile for you in napa. five miles in hayward. better view in the inland valleys. but we are looking at the cool temperatures to start. 52 santa rosa. 57 in hayward. then throughout the afternoon the fog clings to the covert. sixth and 70s. and the clouds keep the numbers in the lower sixth downtown. mid-80s inland. cooler for everyone but a fire danger son the way as we usher

in the end of the weekend. i'll talk about it in detail coming up. kate. >> thanks, lisa. new overnight at least 24 people are dead after an attack on a manual military parade in iran, including at least 12 members of the country's elite revolutionary guard. children and journalists are also among the dead. they said the gunman were terrorists recruited trained and armed and paid for a foreign regime. more than 50 people are also hurt. no group claimed responsibility yet for the attack. mere at home, highway patrol officers are investigating a freeway shooting in oakland. it happened just after 7:30 last night on 980 west of 580. one person was hurt by brokens glass when hess car window shattered he was taken to the hospital. officials shut down lanes for four hours to investigate. so far cvp has not announced any arrests. new this morning two high school football players were air lifted to the hospital after

suffering serious injuries on the field. it happened at two different games in the east bay. our media partners, the east bay times reports the first player suffered a head injury at heritage high school in brentwood around 8:30 last night. an hour later another player suffered a back injury at freedom high school in observingly. both lone to john muir medical center in walnut week backup we don't have updates yet this morning. now new developments in the confirmation battle for supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. senate judiciary chairman chuck guardiansly granted another day to decide on terms for the testimony of christine blasey ford. this is the tweet from the senator written as if a note to judge kavanaugh directly, acknowledges the extension then says in part, they should decide so that we can move on. i want to hear her. i hope you understand it's not my normal approach to be indecisive. . the extension follows a chris from the ford's attorney.

katie utehs has more. >> reporter: the email requesting more time from christine blasey ford's attorney calls the judiciary committee deadline, quote, aggressive and artificial, and calls the treatment of blasey ford calf letter, following a day when president trump doubled down on his support for judge brett kavanaugh. >> and i said, we have to fight for him. not worry about the other side. and by the way, women are for that more than anybody would understand. >> reporter: the statements at a rally followed the president's tweet. i have no doubt if the attack on dr. ford was as bad as she says charges would have been immediately filed with local law enforcement authorities by either her or her loving parents. i ask she bring the filings forward so we can learn date time and place. republican senator susan collins, a critical vote in the confirmation process, denounced the president's tweet. >> ipresident's tweet was completely

. and welcome wak. this is a live look from our golden gate bridge camera. i feel like you can see a little fog in the lights, not a lot of traffic. a good time to horford the bridge. the sun isn't up yet. lisa has a look for the weekend weather. but first we have a wagener for pet owners this morning. the fda regulators say that some flooe and tick medications are causing animals to have seizures, tremendousers or lose muscle control. the alert is about a class of drugs that including products sold under the brand name braskt o nexgard and simparica. they are save for most zms. no need to panic. but they will have a new label with information about the side effects. a secondhand store raising money to help fight cancer holding a sale today. celebrating the store reopening after they were flooded. the american cancer society reopened its discovery shop in

los gatos yesterday. the store son east main street and they lost all of the inventory last april when water came pouring down from the ceiling, flooding the entire building. it was a big blow for the cancer society's fund raising efforts. >> there are 48 discovery shops in the west region and raise over $21 million. and the funds we raise go towards transportation, lodging, and research. >> so the stores also serve as an important gathering place for people with cancer. they can get assistance from agencies and volunteers. in honor of the reopening the store is holding a 25% off sale. definitely a win/win there. there is a new mural on display at a san jose elementary school. abc 7 news was at the unveiling at washington elementary school yesterday. the mural brings to life the concerns of mexican american entrepreneurial mothers. seven santa clara university

students spent five months with the community members talking about how to address issues like housing illegal dumping and resources for children with special learning needs. just a beautiful mural we are looking at right now. the group says the goal of the mural is to raise awareness and help build community. now back to school give airways usually help students stock up for the new school year. but wells fargo held one with a little bit of a twist. the company gave new supplies to the teachers. abc 7 nuts reporter matt keller has that story. >> reporter: wells fargo rolled into martin luther king junior elementary school in richmond. more than 30 volunteers from the black american team member network and the west contra costa unified school district gave thrills with the stage coach backup. but the day was about the teachers and helping them with supplies. >> we need to esteem our teachers lift them up and give them what it is they need to to be able to and what does first teacher natasha jake ones need. >> dry erase makers for color

recorder hue nguyen officiates weddings, the 50-year-old also in charge of keeping the history of life events. but he himself was missing a part of his own past. >> i've been searching for my dad almost my whole lifetime. >> nguyen was born during the vietnam war. he says hess mother always toll him his father was an american gi killed in combat. >> for 50 years of my life it was a void in my heart. >> during the fall of sighingen, nguyen his sister and family members escaped making it to the u.s. nguyen worked up becoming the first vietnamese american clerk recorder. but he always thought about his father. >> i just wanted to know the man. >> nguyen submitted his dna to ancestry.com. years passed until recently he got a hit. a second cousin who started asking around her family. >> she called me to ask me if i had a son that maybe in vietnam. and of course i first didn't think so. >> roy patterson just 18 when he served in vietnam was already married at the time. he was stationed and nontrang

bay today. on shore winds allowing for that. and check out our east bay hills camera. you can see the fog beneath here. and it has made an inland push this morning and with that we have the cooler weekend, fall arrives tonight at 6:54. and gusty winds arrive tomorrow night a in the north and east bay hills. fire concerns going up as these will be off shore winds. we get the downsloping winds where we warm quickly like lat last thursday when the heat came out of know li no where. the beach forecast particle cloudy this afternoon but the fog clears from the coast pch ocean beach and half moon bay particle sunny skies the further south you get on san mateo coast. highs in livermore in the up err 80s. tomorrow cooler and then look what happens the 90s return tuesday and wednesday. tenancy and wednesday warm ertest days of the we can. taking tout peninsula looking at 77. 71 tomorrow and numbers back to

the 80s by tuesday and wednesday. so you are looking for something to do pier 48 with oktoberfest by the bay, today appear o and tomorrow slightly cooler tomorrow but even today will be just in the 60s. look for high of 65 san francisco. 73 in oakland with upper 70s in fremont. you'll enjoy the upper 80s in the inland valleys. 84 in santa rosa. we will be looking at a cooler day today. the coolest tomorrow over the weekend and fall begins. and that means the fall eek which knocks is here with the sun reyes move south of the equator. keep track of temperatures on the ach. the temperatures slid over the weekend and warm up monday. look at tuesday and wednesday, inland mid-90s with the off shore winds. high fire danger. 80s around the bay. even 70s at our beaches. it looks like it's still warm into next thursday. if you like it warm, well you know we get that this time of year but certainly high fire dangerous coming into play.

throughout the bay area. >> it is. the reason why we have low clouds and fog at this point. you can see from this vantage point the sun coming up in less than 30 minutes. beautiful from the camera. there is issues around the north and bay with the fog. 58 in san jose. 48 in morgan hill. check out santa cruz, sleepy gray and cool. at least now. we will get sun later. low 50s in santa rosa. novato at 50. and livermore at 54 degrees. as we go through the next several hours, 11:00 we have 70s in the inland east bay. 60 in oklahoma. but notice the oranges 80s in inland, yellow around the bay, upper 60s to low 70s. and the fog trying to clear from the coast, not always successful. so we will keep it cool and breezy there. the coolest day of the week arriving tomorrow. faum arrives tonight. and we'll talk about a warmer week with high fire danger coming up in a few minutes. kate. >> thanks. all eyes are on the confirmation battle for supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh.

senate judiciary chairman chuck grassley granted christine blasey ford another day to decide on terms for testifying. now, the email requesting more time from blasey ford's attorney called last night's 10:00 deadline aggressive and artificial. but, as blasey ford's testimony hangs in the balance, it's unclear if it matters. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell promised an audience of conservative activists at kavanaugh's confirmation. >> you have watched the fight. you've watched the tactics here is what i want to tell you in the very near future judge kavanaugh will be on the united states supreme court. >> obviously a lot of people upset about that comment. now we have posted the full letter from blasey ford's attorney on our website at abc 7 news.com. christine blasey ford's summer law lives in marin county and she gave her first local tv

interview to abc 7. she spoke with abc 7 news anchor kristen sze and says she stands by her atmosphere in law. >> what motivated christine to approach congresswoman eshoo this summer. >> i understand it was a hard decision. and she decided to confidentially provide the information to her congresswoman because she felt it was her civic obligation that as a member of this society that there was a background check going on. and she knows about information and analysis, and she felt that it was really important to share that information. she never intended for her name to come out. and she wanted it to be part of the investigation. >> what do you think ultimately is christine's wish and hopes for what comes out of this. >> i think she would wish and hope that women that experience sexual violence and improper

behavior will feel strong enough to confront the situations, and that as a society we'll listen better and be more compassion it in responses. >> reporter: like it or not unfortunately, due to all that has happened she is slid thrust to the forefront of the me too movement. how do you think she is carrying that burden and that responsibility? >> i think it's really hard. and i think she is finding some inner strength, maybe she didn't know she had. and i'm -- we want to provide support for her. and i know it means a lot to her when people in the larger community also offer support for her. and so i just encourage people that might be listening to know that it really makes a difference for her to feel that support. >> reporter: kristen sze, abc 7 news. so we've been very focused

on all of the developments in the kavanaugh controversy all we can. and we are keeping at it. you can get the updates right on your phone. you just need to download the abc 7 news app for all of the latest. so switching gears now, a group opposed to recreational marijuana sales in california raised their concerns in mountain view. the california coalition against recreational marijuana says some mountain view residents and businesses are outraged by the city's proposal to allow up to 5 retail pot stores. city staff say a recently submitted draft plan would set that maximum at just three stores. a vote is expected in october. >> we would like to urge the councilmembers of mountain view to reject this prem. wld like to ask every citizen in mountain view to stand up firmly against it. >> marijuana deliveries from outside vendors were okayed earlier this year but a mother toerm on retail pot sales within the city remains in effect.

an east bay polsds is teeming up with local business owners to fight back against robberies and theft. san leandro police hope to mep merchants from becoming the next victim. here is abc 7 news reporter laura anthony. >> if you are a victim of a criminal don't forget about you know staying calm. >> reporter: with a rash of brazen robberies and thefts at bay area retail stores, business owners in san leandro are working with local police to make sure they know how to keep themselves and employees safe. >> this is a national program. actually international program that we have adopted. to offer to our businesses to attempt to get them to conduct business in a safer manner. >> reporter: so far 13 business owners have undergone the froh training that comes with the cre re pro hours of classroom instructions and on-site visits by officers who offer recommends. >> keep window coverings to a minimum so there is clear visible inside and outside fortunate business to make you

authorized those things. >> turns out a hacker had gone into the family's account and used it to pay the balance on the family phones but why. >> it doesn't make sense at that point why is somebody doing that? >> the next tai they found out exactly why. >> somebody has purchased two iphone x on your account. >> turns out the hacker paid off the phones. so the family would be eligible for an upgrade. the scammers ordered two high-end iphones and charged them for the sharma's account. >> they also had them shipped all the way to texas. >> his bill shows two silver iphone xs delivered to an address in texas. verizon saw that it was a fraud and refunded him for the two iphones. however, verizon refused to return that lump sum payment the scammer took from his account to pay off the children's iphones. >> i did not authorize these transactions why would i pay for these charges. >> he wanted to put the phones back on the payment plan. instead verizon cut off service

to the children's phones. >> the biggest blow was they cancelled our service which is like you are punishing us? >> they contacted 7 on your side. we contacted verizon. and the company turned the phones back on and reversed the fraudulent payments, saying we stroif to deliver the world class experience every verizon customer expects and deserves. we didn't live up to the promise. we apologize for any inconvenience. >> that was a high-five moment. thank you, michael. thank you for taking care of us. >> the sharma's said they gave out personal information to a versusen technician who called them right before this happened. the person claims he was testing audio on their line. they now expect that led to the scam. now we check, and that call really did come from a verizon help line. however, verizon refused to say whether it caught the perpetrator. whether it was investigating, or even confirm this was a 7 on your side.
