live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." and it was a loud explosion and the glass was like flying everywhere. >> new at 11:00, a man shot on a bay area freeway is telling his story and says the dog with him may have made the ultimate sacrifice to save his life. good evening. i'm eric thomas. dion is off tonight. chp is asking for wipt necessaries to come forward to solve the crime. the shooting happened in oakland on interstate 980 near the 580 interchange last night. "abc 7 news" reporter is live outside the vet hospital in san leandro where the dog's future is in doubt. carlos. >> reporter: yes, eric. a heartbreaking story. a man and dog were shot at, both injured. the man is now out of the hospital but the dog remains here at this emergency vet hospital and things are not looking good.

>> just some bullet fragments in my neck here. in the back of the neck. the front of the neck, i would be dead. >> reporter: the wounds are still fresh for david frfrfr he was driving around 7:30 friday night when multiple bullets struck his rental car. in the passenger seed, four-year-old leila who he was dog sitting. >> standings next to me, the bullets entering from the side. she probably took them before they got to me. >> reporter: leila, a service dog, was shot twice. the shepherd hound mix is still recovering but is feared paralysed. >> she can't feel pain in her legs. she can't move her tail. >> reporter: leila's dog owner is pleading for witnesses to come forward. >> i have ptsd and she's my emotional service dog, and i can't be alone. >> reporter: on top of the emotional anguish, the financial costs are adding up. >> it is breaking my heart and

video you see b.a.r.t passengers evacuate the civic center station as it filled with smoke. >> a bunch of smoke. >> there's a lot of smoke in this. i'm trying to make sure everybody is off the train. >> reporter: san francisco fire responded shortly after 5:00 to find people scurrying up the stairs to market street. >> they left strollers, bicycles, personal property. we found a teddy bear that they're trying to get back to its owner. >> reporter: this is the scene once the smoke cleared. >> i think it could have been anything. it could have been fire. i see some -- some like writing on there. so it could be, i don't know, oomolye fire.ffiti rated. >> reporter: the culprit one of the ceramic insulators that supports the electrified third rail. >> it was more of a flash. the insulatord. oleai noise and lot of light and smoke, but it is brief and nothing was actually burning. >> reporter: b.a.r.t engineers are working the replace the

insulator. as you can see the sign says generic east bay and that's because the passengers will be facing a bus bridge where they're doing track maintenance in west oakland, so several delays this weekend. after the smoke dissipated, the track was checked and service resumed. no one was injured. in san francisco, katie utehs, "abc 7 news." this is just one more thing b.a.r.t riders need to deal with this weekend. several stations are closed for tack repairs. this is the fourth and final weekend of the interruptions. no trains run between west oakland and 19th street or between west oakland and lake mayor right. free buses will take passengers between west oakla none for merritt. the only way to cross the bridge is use the bus bridge from the 19th > ifhe et bay, a berkley store owner i srecover from a shooting yesterday. abc news was at the sacramento market in south berkley. a store clerk says the owner was caught in the cross fire when a

suspect opened fire on another man that walked into the business. the owner was hit twice in the torso but will survive. the suspect has not been arrested. supreme nominee brk and the woman accusing him of assault are expected to testify before the committee on thursday. two sources close to the talks confirm the tentative deal with abc news. this afternoon christine blasey ford, a bay area professor, agreed to testify. the date was ironed out afterward between her lawyers and the committee. some details are still in the work. it is expected negotiations will continue tomorrowhings like the order of t autbo appea. these new developments cap what's been a wild week of negotiations. well-being, want her to be safe and supported. >> reporter: that candlelight vigil will be held sunday night from 8:00 to 9:00 near the intersection of the el camino real and embarcadero road. yesterday, her sister-in-law, a bay area architect, gave her first local television interview to "abc 7 news" anchor kristen sze. sandra ford mendler wants her to understand who kavanaugh's accuser is. she says christine or krissy as the family calls her was not motivated by politics to come forward. >> i understand it was a really hard decision and she decided to confidentially provide the information to her congresswoman because she felt it was her civic obligation, that as a member of this society that there was a background check going on and she knows about information and analysis and she felt that it was really important to share that

information. she never intended for her name to come out and she wanted it to be part of the investigation. >> you can watch the full interview with christine blasey ford's sister-in-law on abc7news.com. in the south bay they're preparing for a vigil tomorrow night for -- the vigil that cornell mentioned. volunteers gathered in campbell at the snake and butterfly chocolate factory to make posters for the event. it is supposed to start at 8:00 p.m. and will take place at el camino and embarcadero road in palo alto. a san francisco woman is behind putting an ad in "the new york times" in support of christine blasey ford. the ad will be similar to one 27 years ago in support of anita hill. >> we follow in her footsteps. we ask male allies to do the same, to step up and have the courage to get behind those 1600 courageous women, to get behind anita hill and now to get behind drf. >> in 1991, "new york times" ad

developing news out of southern california, a fast-moving wildfire has burned 3,000 acres near castiac and forced evacuations. the fire is in a remote area and is 10% contained. castiac is north of santa clarita off i-5 not far from six flags magic mountain. ew110, a santa rosa . family is relieved after a judge yesterday ruled a five-year-old gir will be allowed to take her cannabis-based medication at school for treatment of a rare form of epilepsy. brooke adams can continue attending public school and

bring her medicine. the decision overrules the school district's stance that allowing brooke on campus violated state and federal laws that banned that type of drug on school grounds. adams mother says the medicine is effective and administered by a nurse by mouth. >> within three to four minutes it stops. before that we would have been calling 911 for a prolonged seizure, 15 minutes, an hour or longer. so this way they can go on with their school day. >> the school district says it is pleased with the decision since it provides them guidance on the issue of cannabis-based medication on campus. the diocese of san jose held its first of three listening sessions in response investigation into clergy section abuse. "abc 7 news" was at our lady of the rosary hill in palo alto for today's session. we were not allowed inside but the diocese said in a statement to abc 7 the talks with parishioners and victims served as a good beginning for healing within the church. two more listening sessions will take place next month on

october 2nd at most holy trinity parish in san jose and october 17th at santa teresa parish, also in san jose. an honor went up today in memory of a fallen hayward police sergeant. a portion of state route 4 was named for scott lunger who was killed three years ago during a traffic stop. you see his father there on the left. the sign is between laurel road in oakley and balfour road in brentwood. he lived in brentwood. the man accused of killing him was captured and is now facing charges. he was a 15-year veteran of the force. he was 48 years old. some young sailors were recognized today for rescuing a stranded kayaker in the water off richmond. the commander of coast guard second ton san francisco presented members of the sea scout program with awards. back in july the kids were on their summer cruise when they heard a coast guard broadcast about the missing kayaker. the sea scout lookout spotted the kayaker in the water near the richmond san rafael bridge. it was surreal. it was late at night and we saw

him off the bow. i was below deck. the skipper called me up, we dropped the stale, came around for him and got him on board. the coast guard commander says the scouts saved the man's life. he had been drifting in the 60-degree water for almost six hours. it was a special night for some young patients at kaiser hospital in oakland. "abc 7 news" was there as many of them got ready for an evening of music and dancing. tonight was kaiser permanente's annual pediatric prom night and brought together children unable to attend their own school promise because of chronic illnesses. >> as they're battling their illness he they don't feel comfortable or safe going to their own prom, which we all know is a pivotal experience in a child's life. this is our opportunity to celebrate our kids, to let them know that their illness does not define them. >> 300 volunteers made the evening possible. gowns and tuxedos were donated, all to make a memorable night even more special. i think i heard drew tuma

overnight hours, pretty much where we should be for this time of year. the 12-hour day planner on your sunday, it will feature the blend of sun and clouds early on. the sun is up here shortly before 7:00 in the morning. we will see a lot of sunshine away from the coast. by 4:00 you will notice a breeze kicking up once again, about 10 to 20 miles per hour. that will keep temperatures pretty much a degree or two from their average this time of year in the 70s and 80s. starting in the south bay tomorrow, a comfortable 78 for san jose under sunny skies. 77 for santa clara. a little warmer in morgan hill, a high of 87 degrees. along the peninsula tomorrow, 74 for mountain view. about 70 for redwood city. cooler and breezier alo uer 50s pacifica and half moon bay. cooler in the city tomorrow, about 63. daly city with a high of 58. into the north bay we go. a lot of sunshine. 80 in napa. about 79 in petaluma. cooler along the water. sausalito only 68. into the east bay tomorrow,

upper 60s to 70s. 69 in oakland. 77 in fremont. inland tomorrow, we are sitting in the 80s. so pretty much where we should be for september numbers. 87 in brentwood, 86 san ramon, 85 the high in livermore. if you are headed to the coliseum tomorrow, it will be a nice guy for a ball game. first pitch temperature around 66 degrees. a lot of sunshine throughout the day. by 4:00, temperatures warming up near 70 so enjoy if you are heading to the coliseum. something we are watching heading into sunday night into early monday morning, it looks like the winds will become a bit more active in the north bay. that creates a fire weather watch. areas shaded in orange, essentially the hills of the north bay, anywhere above 1,000 feet, will see the north winds likely gusting close to 35 miles per hour. that will also drag in dryer air. so under those conditions fires could easily start and spread. here is the accuweather seven day forecast. it is bright and breezy on your

oregon duck riding on a motorcycle. jalen red on reverse gets it into the end zone. they go to review and say his foot hit the pylon, therefore out of bounds. he is at the one. a few plays later oregon on third and goal and it is a bad snap. this really turned things around in favor of the cardinals. recovered and he goes 80 yards to the house for a score. a possible 31-7 oregon lead is now a 24-14 stanford deficit. just like that, after a three-and-out bryce love gets involved. finds his way to the end zone. 22 of his 89 yards here on this play. it is a three-point game after three. they got the ball back. fourth and one from oregon's 30, but where is bryce love? cameron scarlett stop, and it is the duck's ball. oregon goes down the other way, and they score a short touchdown, one-yard plunge. oregon is up ten with 4:30 to go. but the game is not over. stand forward responds in just over a minute.

a quick drive castillo and the lead is back down to three. one more first down and oregon seals the deal. instead, an extra effort and the ball comes lose. they go for extra yardage but the fumble recover and jett toner for stanford sends it to over time. 31 all. stanford gets them first in over time. the third touchdown pass for costello. this is a good one. parkinson uses all 6'7" of that frame to give stanford the lead. herbert, the quarterback of oregon, missed more passes in overtime than all game. fourth and goal picked off in the end zone and stanford somehow wins 38-31 in o.t. >> what kind poise was displayed by your team? >> first of all, none in the first half. we didn't do our job remembvery in the first half. all i told them at halftime is don't be surprised in the middle of the fourth quarter if it is a tight game if we do our jobs and play well. our running back is special.

live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." good evening. i'm eric thomas. dion lim is off tonight. in the headline, supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh and the woman accusing him of sexual assault are expected to testify before the senate judiciary committee on thursday. two sources close to the talks today confirmed a tentative deal with "abc 7 news." the date was ironed out after negotiations between christine blasey ford's lawyers and the committee. b.a.r.t passengers evacuated the b.a.r.t station in san francisco in a hurry after it smild with smoke. the transit district says a ceramic insulator on the third rail failed, causing a sharp bang, a bright flash and lots of smoke. nobody was hurt.

the station reopened about an hour later. chp is asking for witnesses to come forward after a man and service dog under his care were injured in a shooting on an oakland freeway friday night. the dog is still in the veterinarian hospital recovering. david freitag says the veterinarian bills for his four-year-old leila are adding up and he is asking for financial help. it was a sea of yellow and red after the school remembered a golf champion killed earlier in the week. abc news reporter with what we know about the man accused of stabbing her to death. >> reporter: celia barquin arozamena remembered in a moment of silence. >> as a moment of silence as we remember celia barquin arozamena. >> reporter: a video tribute to the 2018 cyclone female athlete of the year. >> i'm very proud of being a cyclone. it makes me really happy. >> reporter: iowa state's marching band spelled out her initials on the field.

she was a rising star. she won a major college golf championship just this year. >> it was huge, because like i always wanted to win a tournament for iowa state? her life tragically cut short. the iowa state college student was golfing by herself in ames, iowa monday morning after her golf bag was found unattended investigators then found her body in a nearby pond. she was stabbed several times. >> i don't think you can put a timeline on how long it will take for this community, this institution and our athletics program to ever overcome this. >> reporter: police eventually arrested 22-year-old colin richards. >> richards had several fresh scratches on his face consistent with a fight and he was attempting to conceal a laceration on his left hand. >> reporter: richards, according to court documents, had recently told one person he had, quote, an urge to rape and kill a

woman. celia barquin arozamena's hometown in spain held a vigil to remember the champion athlete. i'm joe torres, abc news, new york. fema will provide nearly $4 million to rebuild a fire station burned down in last october's tubbs fire in north bay. the funding and insurance payment of about $5 million will insure that santa rosa can replace the fire station. originally fema only committed $1 million in funding, far short of what would have been needed. a group of north bay elected officials including santa rosa's mayor lobbied d.c. lawmakers for the funding. governor brown signed two wildlife bills friday including one that will allow utility companies like pg&e to rely on rate payers to cover the multi-billion dollar cost of last year's wildfires. in exchange, pg&e will allow regulators to go through its books. the state's public utilities commission will determine how much the utility can pay without diminishing its ability to provide electricity. another bill the governor signed will establish a statewide

protocol for emergency alerts in all 58 of the state's counties. in the east bay today families protested outside wells fargo and jp morgan chase banks. it was one of many protests across the bay area. "abc 7 news" was in oakland at the wells fargo on lake shore avenue. protesters raised several issues including that wells fargo finances two for-profit prison corporations. those companies operate some immigration detention centers. protesters say customers can take action with their money. >> people that bank with wells fargo aren't doing anything intentionally wrong but it is easy to move your money into a credit union or another bank. >> wells fargo released a statement about the protest saying in part, we do not as a corporation take positions on public policy issues that do not directly affect our company's ability to serve customers and support team members. the company suggested protesters raise their concerns with government officials. a warning for parents. the amount of kids and teens

vaping in marin county has more than double in the past two years. county health officials are addressing a new state survey. it tracked vaping among 7th, 9th and 11th graders between 2016 and 2018. the largest increase in vaping was among 11th graders, from 11% to 28%. officials say these numbers reflect a national trend. marin's board of supervisors is considering following other counties and banning the sale of vaping products. the residents of springs of napa retirement community found a way to enjoy some of the warm weather out there. they spend the afternoon building what is believed to be the longest banana split in napa history. it came out to be 56 feet long. 95 people including residents, staff members, firefighters from the local fire station and community members helped eat that banana split. as far as the retirement home knows, it is the longest banana split to be built in city history and there were no

a pleasanton woman named renee found her long-lost brother with the help of a dna test. "abc 7 news" reporter adrian bankard has their story. >> reporter: an unexpected reunion thousands of miles in the making. they were both born in south korea, both found abandoned a mile apart from each other as young children, then adopted to separate families in the u.s. justin, too young to know that something or someone was missing. >> i felt alone in life a lot, and was just kind of questioning -- questioning things, questioning my identity. >> reporter: now in their late 30s, they found out they live just 600 miles from each other. the dna test 23 and me led them to this moment. >> i knew about him all this time. i just never thought i would ever meet him. so this is really amazing. we came from the same parents, which is blowing my mind because i've never known anybody related
