at a party at yale in the early 90s. meantime, the bay area professor who has accused kavanagh of sexual assault will testify in an open hearing before the senate judiciary committee on thursday. christine blasey ford's lawyers confirmed the meeting. blasey ford will testify first and kavanagh second. they also say it's not yet determined who will question ford, senators or staff attorneys. a politician is revealing a secret that she was the victim of sexual assault. the incidents happened decades ago, but palo alto's mayor liz niss says she was inspired by christine blasey ford to come forward. you spoke with the prmayor? >> reporter: i did, eric and

mayor niss never intended to share her story, but after christine blasey ford came forward with her accusations, staying silent was not an option. >> palo alto's mayor is sharing a secret that she's only shared with her sister, that she is a survivor of a sexual assault. >> it's somewhat liberating but it's always somewhat frightening because you feel somewhat vulnerable. >> she was sexually assaulted the first time when she was a teenager getting a ride home with a friend. >> he decided to take a shortcut home, which turned into an assault, a are really unpleasant assault. >> the second happened years later when she was attacked by a co-worker at a hotel. both times she says she got away and escaped being raped. she says she didn't report the incidents to her parents or police because she was scared. mayor niss says she was inspired

burning dangerously close to a home in san ramon. now firefighters have it under control, but investigators say neighbors say they heard a boom just before the fire started. katie? >> reporter: eric, firefighters have begun letting people back on to this dead end court where the fire got dangerously close to her homes. as you can see, there are still a lot of fire trucks in the area. i want to show you the scene as we arrived around 5:00. there was a lot of smoke, neighbors tell me they heard a boom and a lot of smoke and fire shortly thereafter. this afternoon, san ramon police evacuated homes near the fire. the wind pushed the fire dangerously close to these homes. the land behind these homes is cattle grazing area part of it owned by east bay parks and part of it is private. neighbors describe what they saw

around 4:00. >> it looked like the two houses on the end were on fire, then i saw the flames all come over to the left-hand side and it was a wall of flames. >> reporter: fortunately, no homes were damaged, firefighters got everything under control in about a half an hour. a firefighter investigator en route to find out what caused this fire. now that hillside up there, there are some trails, there is access for people. but firefighters tell me this doesn't appear to be a natural cause, so of course they are looking into it. there will be a fire watch well into the evening. >> thanks, katie. also right now, firefighters in east san jose are battling a fire off quinby road and forest drive. and dozens of firefighters were called when one fire sparked a second fire. just more than 10 acres burned near highway 4 and willow pass road.

this fire got contained just before 3:00 this afternoon. and remember you can always get breaking news updates and check out the weather where you live on our abc7 mobile app, it's free to download in your mobile app store. investigators now see the arrest of a uc berkeley employee roy waller on friday. tomorrow he'll be charged with four charges of aggravated sexual assault with special circumstances. investigators were led to waller after putting gene yolg information into a website. the attacks took place between 1991 and 2006. the 49ers lost more than the game today against the san francisco chiefs. quarterback star jimmy garofalo suffered a torn acl. garofalo's knee buckled before he took a big hit there. he'll have an mri tomorrow.

garofalo signed a five-year $100 million contract over the off-season that made him the highest paid player at the time. this means he could miss the remainder of the season. it was a celebration today at san francisco's glide memorial church. the congregation celebrated the birthday of pastor williams. tomorrow, the u.s. supreme court could decide whether to take up the martin's beach lawsuit. a tech billionaire purchased 89 acres around san mateo county and closed it to the public. later he was forced to open the case by violating access to the beach without a permit.

a light need side show in east oakland netted police dozens of cars and led to two arrests. oakland police tell us more than 85 cars were towed. officers were still clearing the scene eight hours later. the high street offramp reopened just before noon. oakland police say impounding the cars is a deterrent for people coming to another side show. >> those are folks that typically a majority do not live in oakland. they're outside of oakland. so you're not going to have a way to get home and you're certainly not going to have a way to get to work tomorrow. >> two police officers were hurt in last night's arrest. they're expected to be okay. bill cosby will be back in court tomorrow for his sentencing hearings. cosby was found guilty in april

on three sexual counts of drugging and saltiassaulting an constand. lawyers will also argue whether cosby should where labelled a lifetime predator. he faces up to 30 years in prison. in the east bay, a driver escaped injury after his car caught fire. the alameda fire department tweeted this video. the car caught fire yesterday on i-80 at the powell street exit in emeryville. police say the driver smelled smoke and was able to pull over and get out of car before it burst into flames. a car ban on popular streets today allowed people to walk, skate, ride and walk today. they closed the streets the car and instead filled it with people. >> this is an amazing celebration for our community.
