4:15 pm
modular housing, which will be affordable housing for the so i'm excited about making sure we have more police officers on the streets, the plaza is looking better than ever, and moving forward in identifying properties that we can use to build more affordable housing, developing relationships with the private sector to get them committed to supporting our efforts to build more housing. developing the relationships, making commission appointments, hiring new staff. i mean, it's been an eventful 75 days. >> no question, housing is on top of the mind for everyone. another one is crime, especially car break-ins. we had 30,000 cases of reported break-ins last year. and only 2% resulted in arrests. in fact, we did a story recently which people were putting signs on their cars, little notes to say please don't break into my car. what can be done? >> car break-ins this year are down, but it's still a real challenge. so you know that we've made some

gains in terms ofg changes to o laws and trying to go after committing those crimes, but that's not a solution. part of it is we have to look at making some real change and we have to make sure that there are consequences. and i think that's one of the biggest challenges. >> more enforcement? >> there has to be, especially in the hot spots, places where tourists visit, and having discussions with the chief around his operations in those areas, which is why car break-ins are down around the city, because of a lot of the work the police have been doing. >> you mentioned tourists. that leads to my next question, which is conventions have been canceling on san francisco and tourists cite the problem, cleanliness of the streets is another problem. and we've been seeing piles of garbage. even dan ashley sawacrossstreet.
4:17 pm
and people wrote in and responded. how are we tackling that? >> i will tell you, i'm driving around and walking around the streets on empyees to basically clean up our streets. part of that is the solution, but we cleaned up the tenderloin, one hour later it was a mess as if we never touched the street. we have to change behavior. we have to get people housed and into treatment. we have to address the challenges of people who struggle with addiction and mental illness, because we can do all the cleaning that we want. we can also hold residents accountable more, but we struggle with people who we're trying to help and we have difficulty with helping. >> you mentioned drug addiction and i know you've been pushing the governor to sign a bill in front of him that would allow san francisco to establish a safe injection site. in fact, you toured a model concept one in san francisco. can you talk about how that would work? >> i toured vancouver canada.
