bill cosby has been unmasked and we have seen the real man as he's headed off to prison. >> he can't run no more. you know, the boogeymans going >> mr. h been denied his right to a fair trial. >> bill cosby sentenced three to ten years in prison. the 81-year-old is already behind bars tonight in pennsylvania. good afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. >> i'm kristen sze. comedian bill cosby has begun serving a prison sentence today after being convicted of sexual assault. it involved one woman. temple university administrator, andrea constan. dozens of others accused him, including a north bay woman. >> carolyn tyler spoke with her and joins us with reaction. >> janice baker kenny is a former abc 7 employee. she is on vacation today decompressing. our phone call today, she was emotional, describing the overwhelming joy and sense of e

over. >> mr. cosby, any comment, sir? >> it's a dramatic fall from grace for a man once known cosb be legally blind, led away in handcuffs. sentenced to spend at least three years in prison. >> it's just -- it's over. all the ridicule and the horrible things said about us, it's all worth it. >> that's janice baker kinney the north bay woman who testified during the trial. she says she was a 24-year-old bartender at harrah's in reno when cosby invited her to a party. >> i was sexually assaulted by him in may of 1982. >> her testimony helped bolster the claims of the key accuser, andrea constand which led to today's sentencing. in all, dozens of women came forward to publicly accuse the famous comedian. baker kinney believes they were

at the forefrot of the me too movement. and in our phone conversation today, she sarcastically thanked the man now classified as a sexually violent predator. >> i thank him for his arrogance and his ego because it made a group of women really pissed off. >> that outrage began with their attorney gloria allred called a long journey to justice. >> this is a very important day, judgment day has come. >> cosby's attorneys say they will appeal. >> they persecuted jesus and look what happened. not saying that cosby is jesus. we know what they've done to black men for centuries. >> bill cosby will have to register with state police in pennsylvania and attend sex offender counseling. in the newsroom, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. before the sentencing today, prosecutors released a five-page victim impact statement that andrea constand submitted to the

court. here's how she described her life after the sexual assault. bill cosby took my beautiful healthy young spirit and crushed it. he robbed me of my health and vitality, my open nature and my trust in myself and others. as for how her life has changed since the guilty verdict, constand wrote, instead of looking back, i'm looking forward to looking forward. i want to get to the place where the person i was meant to be gets a second chance. we posted the entire statement and camille cosby's statement in support of her husband at abc7news.com. a b.a.r.t. director is proposing adding civilian safety ambassadors to ride the trains. he's going to pitch the idea at thursday's board meeting where additional b.a.r.t. officers will be requested. katie yu tis live with more on the potential new safety effort. katie? >> reporter: larry, here in west oakland, safety ambassadors were in the parking lot during the

shopping season so they don't get items stolenment imagine a similar used but on the trains. they wouldn't be b.a.r.t. officers but there to prevent crime. it's similar to a program that was in place in 1997 for the munis. >> the most important message, we're losing riders on evenings and weekends. that will affect b.a.r.t.'s bottom line. in trains and on stations, it's taking a toll on ridership. to help, b.a.r.t. district 9 director is proposing hiring civilian safety ambassadors to ride the trains. >> our interest is really in getting a safety presence, a visible presence on the trains, in the stations, deescalating conflict situations, people that need help to get that help. >> some riders are skeptical. >> i don't need joe schmoe acting like he's a police officer emboldened to do something a police officer does. that's how people get hurt.

>> but i think that we absolutely can do it. it's been a huge, quiet success at muni. that this program has existed since im center. paid civilians monitor the elevators to keep people from relieving themselves within them. >> that's excellent. i think that anything that is offered for security should be used. >> there's also a proposal to add more officers. some feel, despite high-profile incidents, b.a.r.t. is mostly safe day-to-day. >> i don't know that having more officers is going to solve anything. a lot of people take the train. >> reporter: larry and kristen, this idea is really the beginning stages. they're going to ask b.a.r.t. staff at thursday's meeting to come up with a proposal that the board members can then consider. so katie, b.a.r.t. is

feeling financial pressure with adding more inspectors to cash fare evaders. how much would this new program cost? >> reporter: again, it's early on. but estimates, based on what it cost for mun toy have program, muni has 17 full-timeo plan to roll it out at double the amount of people and scale up to three times the amount. we're talking about 3 million lds. katie utehs. the case of an abducted boy. the boy was found safe in dublin after a statewide amber alert was issued. they arrested the boy's father and the 17-year-old half brother. police accuse the father of abducting the boy yesterday in modesto during a home invasion-style break in. during which pepper spray was used. they could hear the boy screaming for his father as the

bay to 97 in vacaville. talk about a huge spread. we're talking 40-degree difference. we're seeing the micro climates. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast. >> see you in a few minutes. homeless advocates are making a last effort to turn a vacant county building into housing. >> the santa clara board of supervisors took up the issue on the future of the san jose city hall annex. next to the administration complex. >> reporter carlos saucedo live in san jose with more on the building's future. carlos? >> reporter: behind me is the building in question. it's in danger of being torn down because officials say it's a dangerous building that's in bad shape. but homeless advocates see a different purpose to it now. the old san jose city hall annex has sat vacant for years. enough so that the rundown structure is on the path of demolition. >> the annex simply is not a

build thag can be reused for any purpose, including to be used as housing for homeless. because of its dire condition, santa clara county is planning to demolish the structure to create temporary parking. but homeless advocates are pleading their case before the board of supervisors to save the building. >> we brought it to the county and they didn't think it was a good idea. >> gordon city construction would like to gut the interior of the annex to convert it to residential units. but the county says rehab will be costly. >> most that of stuff has been fabricated. in two weeks, i could have that building clean and two months we could have it gutted. >> he says costs to repurpose the building would be minimal with the use of private funds. when all said and done, county officials estimate the cost over $50 million. >> we owe it to the people we serve to provide a first-rate building that meets all ordinance, all code requirements. not a building like the one that we have. >> reporter: and the county

tonight, there's going to be a lot of festivities surrounding dream force. there's going to be a lot of traffic. good luck. we're live in san francisco, i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> thank you, chris. you set me up for the next story. it's anything but a dream for drivers around the moscone center. it's shut down between third and fourth. there are lots of people walking around adding to the congestion. it's expected to last through friday. there will be parking officers trying to keep things moving. the co-founders of instagram are resigning and they will leave the company in a few weeks. ceo kevin shis trom issued a statement saying the two are leaving the company to explore our curiosity and creativity. there's been reportedly a rift with mark zuckerberg. facebook bought instagram for a billion dollars in 2012. today the facebook ceo, mark zuckerberg called the two, extraordinary product leaders, adding that he's looking forward

to seeing what they build next. facebook is facing a lawsuit from content moderators who say they're suffering from ptsd. they're responsible for reviewing and reviewing a range of offensive images and videos. the lawsuit claims they're suffering from psychological trauma. they're bombarded with videos, images and live stream of child sexual abuse, bestiality, beheading, suicide and murder. the suit alleges, facebook does not allow the workplace safety guidelines the company helped create. abc 7 news reached out to facebook for a comment. twitter announced a new policy to address what it labels as dehumanizing speech. according to the san francisco-based company, the policy will, quote, prohibit content that dehumanizes others based on their membership in an identifiable group, even when the material doesn't include a direct target. the policy takes effect october 9th. let's turn to the weather

today marks the 6th annual voter registration day in the united states. the san francisco department of the elections held pop-up registration events all around the city today. including this one at city college. staffers and volunteers answered questions, helped people find out if they were registered and signed up those wanting to vote in november's general election. >> i think it's important to

the full senate vote could happen any time after that. larry? >> emily, we know kavanaugh and one of the accusers will testify on thursday. do we know anything about the order of things or any of the logistics involved? >> we're start to go look a little bit more into it and get more details. we know kavanaugh and blasey ford will never be in the same room at the same time. it will be one and then the next. blasey ford will testify first and as you mentioned, it will be a female prosecutor who will be questioning her, a sex crimes prosecutor will be asking her those questions on thursday. and also an interesting tidbit, these proceedings set to happen on thursday will be in a different confirmation hearing room than all of the other ones that we've seen lately. a much smaller room and they'll control outbursts or protests as these people testify. larry? >> emily rau, thank you.

breaking news out of san francisco. the new salesforce transit center is shut down because crews discovered a fissure in one of the steel beams in the ceiling. that crack is on the third level bus deck on the eastern side of the salesforce transit center near fremont street. out of an abundance of caution, the joint powers authority temporarily closed down the transit center as they work to repair that issue. all operators will temporarily provide bus service out of the nearby temporary transbay

visitors in the last decade and encourage a new generation of scientists. vi roof cat ten yearsey start. the new california academy science building has been a giant science experiment, covered with a living roof, a huge expanse of real plants growing almost as nature intended. the original idea came from groundbreaking architect rein zoe by an u. >> he spent time walking around golden gate park, looking at the surrounding topography of san francisco and he came back downstairs after spending about an hour on the roof of the old building. he had this very iconic, now, line drawing. it was a green felt tip pen sketch of a rolling roof line. >> that sketch launched plans for what may be the most complicated living roof ever built. curved steel beams were installed to create a rolling

hillside effect, like the hills of san francisco. >> had to come up using specific types of models, ways to be able to look at the steel and then throw it through vending machines that get the right proportions. >> the building has two giant domes, each 90 feet in diameter. this is the skeleton inside the planetarium dome. this is the start of the rainforest dome. the contractor hired a roller coaster company to create the curving ramp inside. the roof is made of seven different layers providing everything from insulation to drainage. it's designed to absorb 98% of the rainwater that hits it. >> that's important because normally when rainwater hits a roof, it acts as a conduit carrying pollutants into the ocean or into the bay. we're capturing the rainwater and the plants are using it. reducing that runoff. >> each section was tested to make sure it's waterproof. while all that was going on,

this is a live view above the old temporary transbay center, which has been suddenly reopened again. you can see there are going to be long lines of people and buses pulled up to that area. they were up until a few minutes ago. it was fenced off to the public. >> why did they send the buses there and all the people go in there? it's because at the salesforce transit center, pretty new, they have that fissure there that larry was talking about on the third level bus deck on the eastern side of that center near fremont street. you can see it right there. that is the roof you're looking at. out of just an abundance of caution there, the transbay joint powers authority will temporarily close that transit center as they work to repair that issue. that steel beam found way crack, a fissure all operators meantime will provide bus service out of the nearby temporary transbay terminal. the old one at howard and main streets. >> in a statement, the transbay authority says, quote, the safety o
