>> it took eight years and more than $2 billion to build. but after only a few weeks in operation, the salesforce trt cents closed tonight because of a cracked steel beam creating a huge mess for commuters. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. it was first discovered around 10:00 this morning on the third level bus deck. foys from a "san francisco chronicle" photographer show a worker doing and ispection in the area. the term nat was not closes and evacuated around 4:30 in the afternoon. bus service being moved to the old temporary transbay terminal at main and folsom streets only a few blocks away from where the salesforce transit center is locked. team coverage for you on this breaking story tonight. cornell bernard has the impact on the commute. kate larsson begins with how the crack was first discovered. kate? >> reporter: larry beil, that's right. inspectors are here right now. at least through tomorrow trying

to assess this cracked steel beam. you can see these metal barriers. public works set them up in the past few hours. besides the security guards, you can see the transit center is completely empty which certainly makes it feel like this is the beginning of a long investigation and potential repair. >> i need everyone to clear back outside the structure, please. >> reporter: transbay joint powers authority empty. the transit center monday evening after workers discovered a crack in an american mb made steel beam. commuters trying to catch the bus were floored to learn the new $2 billion transit center has a defect. >> the millennium tower, now this, i'm sure there has to be some issues going on with the construction people. >> it's closed. >> the beam is cracked. the behavior of the beam is unpredictable. that's why our engineers want us to close that area. >> reporter: executive director of tgpa says the cracked beam is in the ceiling of the third

level bus deck near fremont beneath the rooftop park. this photo shows a worker inspecting the area in question. he says the crack was discovered around 10:00 tuesday morning while workers why were installing ceiling panels. >>'s very disappointing for us and it's very disappoint we have to inconvenience the public. >> it is a major deal. look at this down here. >> reporter: the cracked beams affected areas far outside the center. these muni workers had to dee energize bus lines in the area so contract kers can can safely work inside the building shown here by drone view 7. the large area of soma the transit center the impacts. >> they have track over the place. they need to fix it if the building is in trouble. >> reporter: he believes and probably hopes the beam is an isolated problem. he says it will take inspect issues at least a few days to

determine the cause and severity of the problem. live at the salesforce transit center, kate larsson. >> right now there's only one street closure. fremont street shut down between mission and howard. for those people coming down from fremont street, they got caught in a huge traffic jam. cars coming off the bay bridge and buses tried to navigate the closure. here's how it will impact other transit options tomorrow. b.a.r.t. is running longer trains. if you use casual carpool, your drop-off locations could be affected. for those coming into san francisco obviously you're going to want to allow extra time. bus service is moved back to the temporary terminal. sky map 7 will show us where that is. it spans an entire city block between peel and main streets. cornell bernard has who are more on challenges commuters will be facing.

behind you had the right idea. thank you. >> the salesforce transit center opened to great fanfare august 12th. there were three days of events where huge crowds showed up and stayed for hours. just a month after the opening, problems started to show up a couple of weeks ago. the walkway in the public park that sits four stories bob street level started crumbling. chunks broke apart. workers have been patch package the holes. another wrinkle to the story is is the legal dispute between the owners of millennium tower and the transit authority. the tower is sinking and the owners blamed the nearby salesforce transit center. a judge ruled transbay power must pick up some of the millennium's legal bills. today the executive director said he didn't think the cracked beam will anything to do with the sinking tower. the transit center's closure will likely cause major headaches for the morning commute. we have you covered at 4:30

last july. an air canada report released today said it was hard for the pilots to distinguish the right runway because of bad lighting and construction at st. fo. the ntsb released findings today, among them pilot fatigue. in a statement sfo said they've already started making some changes. today a second woman accusing supreme court nominee bret cabanaugh of sexual assault said she will talk to the fbi. deborah ramirez told "the new yorker" kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party. her lawyer says she will also talk with lawmakers but first has to tell her story to the fbi. >> if we can get a meaningful investigation by the fbi, there are all sorts of ways that our client would be willing to provide information to the senate. >> the first woman who publicly accuse kavanaugh of assault is bay area professor christine blasey ford. she will testify before a committee on thursday. emily raw has more what to

prison. a judge sentenced is bill cosby to three to ten years for drugging and sexually assaulting a former temple university employee. a north bay woman who also accused cosby of assault testified at the trial. abc7 news reporter carolyn tyler got her reaction to today's sentencing. >> mr. cosby, any comments sir? bill cosby said to be legally blind led away in handcuffs sentenced to spend at least three years in prison. >> it's just, ah, it's all the ridicule and the horrible things said about us. it's just -- it's all worth it. >> reporter: that's janice baker kinney, the north bay woman testified during the trial and says she was a 24-year-old bartender at harrah's in reno when cosby invited her to a party. >> i was sexually assaulted by
