we'll continue to be closed until the end of next week. >> serious concerns at san francisco's new $2 billion transit center. it will be off limits for a while longer as officials now discovered a second cracked beam in that structure. sky 7 showing the traffic around the transbay terminal right now. you can see, it's busy but not terrible. as we give you the view from sky 7, you're looking at interstate 80. this is the view as you would come off of the bay bridge. that exit right there is the fremont street are exit. normally would be much more congested. maybe a lot of people heeding the advice of traffic officials and taking public transportation in the morning and in the afternoon. so we'll see how it goes. good afternoon. thanks for joining us. >> two beams are now affected. the original one discovered yesterday and a second adjacent

beam. the transit center will be closed until at least the end of next week. take a look. these pictures show the exact problem. the cracked steel beams support the east section. >> we're told there's no reason to suspect problems in any other area at this point. abc 7 reporter melanie woodrow live from outside the center with more. >> reporter: fremont street where i am standing is closed and as you said, the transit center is also closed. at least the end of next week. the damage is above where i'm standing on fremont street. the main crack approximately two feet, six inches. and another smaller crack on an adjacent beam. this is the cracked load-bearing steel beam workers discovered at 10:00 a.m. yesterday. >> the beam basically supports the roof, the bus deck, and spans the bridge over fremont

street. >> reporter: which is why they decided to close both fremont street and the transit center. >> we will not open the transit center or fremont street until we are 100% sure the issue is corrected and the building is safe. >> reporter: during their investigation last night, workers found a second crack. >> the adjacent beam to the beam in question also suffered some cracking. not to the same extent as the beam in question, but still has some cracking. >> this is what the beams looked like when they were installed in january of 2016. there was also no crack in june of 2016 when fire proofing material was installed. >> the cracks took place after june of 2016. we don't know when after june of 2016. >> reporter: meaning it's possible the cracks occurred before they were discovered yesterday. the transit center has been open to the public since august 12th. there are similar beams on first street. e the inspected ituay a sig of .

situation, but at this point in time, we have no reason to believe that the -- that this exists on first street. >> reporter: tgpa says the cracks could be a fabrication, welding installation, or design issue. the next step is to put in temporary shoring to relieve the load on these two cracked beams. live in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> melanie, this is a question that is going to be asked frequently in the days ahead. is it possible there's any relation to the millennium tower issues with that sinking building? >> reporter: larry, that is a question that makes a lot of sense because this building is next to millennium tower. tgpa is absolutely adamant that there is no connection between the leaning, sinking, and now cracked millennium tower to the

ople ain how they could possibly be so absolutely certain about that just a day and a half after the crack was discovered in these steel beams. >> all right. melanie, thank you. live in san francisco. so thus far, we know what has happened inside the transit center. we don't know the why, we don't know the how. is it the beams? is it the design? the beams were fabricated in stockton. they will under go testing. wayne freedman spent today looking into the future investigation. >> reporter: just last month to a commuting niet mare today, this is a ride no one imagined for the center. >> it's worryin ining zblrks -- >> reporter: why things work and why

causes to a basic scale. the scenario is these beams are failing due to poor handling perhaps in the welding and still no easy fix. >> they'd have to look at every weld. they've have to check it and look at the structure to see if there are any other crack there is. >> reporter: in a lab at uc berkeley, they look at tests. we know the largest transit terminal crack is two to six inches across in one worst case scenario, the buildings design might be to blame. in another, it might be a matter of the steel not being up to spec. that could be worse. >> that would be an ominous situation. it would question the whole structure. >> reporter: consider how this is not the first time recently that san francisco has suffered from mistakes in major projects. certainly we remember the corroding bolt in the eastern span of the new bay bridge. or muni laying down three miles of the wrong tracks in its central subway. while not a civil project, the

leaning millennium tower next to the new transit center. >> we should have reached the stage in development and technology where these things would be less likely to happen, but they still occur. >> reporter: in short, today's problems are likely to become a case study for the future. san francisco mayor london breed tweeted this picture of her at the transit center today. she said a thorough investigation would be done to find what caused the crack. the closure is causing problems for commuters. over fremont street just before the closure on mission. traffic was not too bad. that's probably because more people knew about the closure today than yesterday when it took everybody by surprise. let's give you a live look at traffic right now. this is a wide shot of downtown san francisco. i can see on the right-hand side is 80 again. we showed you at the top of the

program. looks like traffic is light. maybe a lot of people decided to take public transportation in the afternoon. if we get down to street level later on, you'll see what that's like with all the detours and possible blockages. let's do that right now. let's go to the traffic map. the red -- red is bad. red means very slow. the purple l -- and it's great we highlighted this. howard street is blocked off. that is blocked off because of dream force. there should be one more purple that i'm looking at, but i don't see right now. i know that fremont street underneath the transbay center is blocked off as well. green is good. red is bad. we'll just see how it all shakes out as the afternoon commute unfolds. b.a.r.t. ridership was up today as people were warned not to drive in the area because of expected gridlock. more than 213,000 people exited stations today. that's an increase of nearly 4.5% compared to last wednesday. for information about other transit options, go to abc7news.com and of course the

abc 7 news app. now to new details of another allegation of sexual misconduct against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. a woman says she observed in kavanaugh involved in aggressive behavior. >> she wants to come forward because she believes that the truth should be known and that this process is a search for the truth. >> julie swetnick says kavanaugh was present at a party in 1982 where she was the victim of a gang rape. she did not allege that kavanaugh attacked her. he denied her story in a statement through the white house saying, quote, i don't know who this is and this never happened. president trump called the new accusation ridiculous. >> it's a con game that they're playing. the democrats are playing this game that is disgraceful. it's a disgrace to the country. >> bay area professor christine blasey ford has accused kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a high school party 36 years ago. they're both set to testify

tomorrow. another woman has accused kavanaugh of exposing himself to her at a party at yale. kavanaugh says he never sexually assaulted anyone. >> lawyers for christine blasey ford have released the results of her lie detector test. she was asked if any part of her statement was false or if she made up any part of this. both answers were no. the former fbi agent who administered the exam said three separate analyses says there was no deception. before the exam, she wrote out what she said happened at the party. she says she was pushed into a bedroom and describes how kavanaugh attacked her. she says she was able to escape when his friend got on top of him and they toppled over. a transcript released today of the opening statement she will

say tomorrow. she goes into graphic detail saying, quote, brett groped me and tried to take off my clothes. he had a hard time because she was so drunk and because i was wearing a one piece bathing suit under my clothes. i believed he was going to rape me. i tried to yell for help. when i did, brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from screaming. we posted her entire statement on our website. >> this is the calendar kavanaugh's -- you can see the calendar from 1982 shows things like prom, hair cut, beach week. kavanaugh says he was not at a party the night dr. christine blasey ford was assaulted. it appears he may not have documented everything. deon lim will have lye reports here on abc 7. we'll also be streaming that hearing on our abc7news.com

settlement with uber over its data breach. under the agreement, uber will pay $148 million for violating data breach laws when it waited a year to expose the hack that exposed the data. california attorney general says the settlement will hold uber responsible to unprecedented new standards. >> for the first time in history, an a.d.'s office privacy design into its products. that means that uber must integrate privacy considerations and protections into every phase of their products development and design. >> under the settlement, california and the city of san francisco will split $26 million. lawyers for the san francisco woman who's claiming post-traumatic stress as a result of working for facebook are speaking with abc 7 news today. >> they're seeking class action status. content moderators tasked with

removing offensive content. >> reporter: here's the lawsuit filed by selena scola in superior court. she says as a result of working for facebook as a content moderator, she suffered lasting psychological trauma. her job was to sit in a cubicle and watch videos. thousands each day to try to catch and remove offensives and live streams. her attorneys tell abc 7 news some of those images were extremely graphic and facebook did not do enough to protect her and other content moderators. >> a typical day for a content moderator might include viewing thousands of violent and trauma-inducing images such as sexual assault, child abuse, animal abuse, suicide. >> scola's attorneys say

facebook has support for content moderators but not followed its own standards. the suit asked that the staffing company that put scola there m program for content moderators. we reached out to facebook and pro unlimited for a comment, no responses yet. the case will have a status hearing in november. abc 7 news. amazon is warning congress to avoid california's model as it crafts new consumer data privacy legislation. the senate commerce committee is gathering information for a bill that would govern how companies use consumer data. executives from six major companies including amazon, google, and apple testified today. the amazon official criticized california's privacy law as too broad. it says to tell beyond request. it takes effect in 2020. let's get the data on our weather. warmer inland. >> definitely inland. we have mid to upper 90s there. if you're near the coast, i

mean, it's so cool. because the fog has not left as you look at live doppler 7. we're now going to take a look at a live picture. it's a combination of fog down below from sutro tower and high clouds up above. we're under this blanket. in the city it is 60 degrees. 70 degrees in oakland. san francisco already reached the mid-70s. it was definitely warm. in half-moon bay you can feel the chill at 55 degrees. pretty view of filtered sunshine right now. low 80s santa rosa, vacaville. from our roof camera, not a strong breeze along the embarcadero. mild inland at 8:00 p.m. but it is going to be cool at 9:00 p.m. around the coast and bay and cloudier into the overnight hours. we look out towards the bay.

california may squeeze out a little sprinkle in the north bay or a light shower, but it's really going monday into tuesday when we see the potential for some wet weather here. keep in mind, this is one computer model. we have to wait w get closer. but if ts out, it could be a very wet pattern early next week. especially on tuesday. accuweather seven-day forecast. temperatures tumbling friday. you will feel the difference. we're tracking the potential for a few sprinkles saturday with a slight chance in the morning on sunday. i think the chance of showers starts to increase as we head towards early next week. you can download the accuweather app and track those temperatures and as live doppler 7 begins to become active, we can track that. well, there's already a shocking twist in the premiere of the show "a million little things." we get the scoop from two of its stars. and it's marvel day at at&t

and here are the stories making headlines at 4:30. san francisco sales force transit center will stay closed until the end of next week. yesterday workers spotted a crack in a beam. the $2 billion center just opened last month. melanie woodrow tweeted this photo of one of those cracked beams. you see it there. the beam was last inspected in january of 2016. there was also no crack when fire proofing material was applied a few months later. the senate judiciary committee has received a declaration of another

accusation. the trump administration says china is trying to stifle free speech andunish those who support the president's tough trade stance. president trump says he will sign a spending bill to avoid a looming government shutdown. the $854 billion bill in addition to keeping the government open, it funds the military. it boosts military pay, and also increases spending for human services, education, labor, and other agency. bill cosby will spend his time in prison in a brand new facility near his home. pennsylvania correction officials say he will be at sci phoenix. a new prison in the philadelphia suburbs. this information comes a day after a judge sentenced him to three to ten years for sexual d in a single cell near the infirmary. it's located about 20 miles from his gated estate. the man charged in february's deadly school shooting in florida appeared in court today.

lawyers for nicolas cruz want to interview potential hundreds of witnesses. cruz a charged with killing 17 people and wounding 17 others. his lawyers say he would plead guilty in exchange for life in prison where prosecutors are rejecting that. as dream force continues tonight in san francisco, there's a unique competition under way involving some bright college students from across the country. the goal is to help big brothers, big sisters. chris winn has the story you'll see only on abc 7 news. >> reporter: attending dream force can be overwhelming. but these area natives are taking it all in. the competition is to build a solution to a real world problem being faced by big brothers, big centers of america. the organization has seen a decline in volunteers in recent years. it's collecting as many data points we can to match you up with someone who shares those topics, talents, interests to make sure it's not just a

dogs and cats are considered family members for many in the bay area. >> here's now a look at somebody every pet owner really, really needs. and that is the veterinarian. >> reporter: how do you find a good vet and pay a fair price? here to talk about that is bay area consumer checkbook kevin brasser. look, everyone seems to love their vet. i've never heard anyone say my vet is horrible. >> and we find the same thing. we found overall veterinarians are nice people when we ask them, you know, they listen to you? do they spend enough time with you? the customers we survey, they rate vets very highly. you know, more than 90% of the time they say they're superior for things like, you know, just kind of spending time with you and caring for the animal. that's a good sign. another good sign is that most vets are really knowledgeable. these days it's often harder to get into veterinary school than it is medical school. so the training a good. they for sure are knowledgeable

people. but you do want to make sure they're using a vet that not only cares for your animal and does -- is thorough and smart and does good work, but also that they don't overcharge you. and this is the part where when we're surveying customers about veterinarians, that they get their lowest scores on our survey, that's for keeping costs down. a lot of veterinary customers are dissatisfied with the charges they're paying to take care of their pets. >> seems to be a lot of upsale when you walk into the vet's office. >> we get complaints are, they made me feel guilty about not wanting to get my dog's teeth cleaned again. or they made me feel guilty about, you know, not every pet owner is the same in terms of their tolerance for costs. some have limits. and some veterinarians kind of made them feel bad about not wanting to pay thousands of dollars for care that they couldn't afford to make. another big problem is that some vets just have really, really high fees. and most veterinary patients,

customers don't really shop around. we did shop around and found that some places charge prices that are eight, nine times higher than the next vet. for example, to neuter a 6-month-old 30 pound dog we found that in the bay area, prices ranged from $163 to -- wait for it -- $1,032. >> no. >> price differences that are five, six times higher than others. you say i want the best for my pet. well, you can still get the best and not have to pay really high prices. we found no relationship between the prices the practice charges and the quality you get. >> if you call around and ask for prices, do they give them? >> they do. it was actually pretty easy to get pricing for veterinary care so long you know what you need. you know it's a teeth cleaning, you can specify enough information to get a price for that. problem is lot of times you don't know what's wrong.

sciences is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its move into the anniversary at golden gate park. we're dipping back t t ar kooifs for a look at what it took to create the new exhibits. today the arrival of the alb alligator ten years ago. >> reporter: alligators are no fuss, no muss. there are two here packed in crates for the drive to san francisco. all they need is a fan to keep them cool. gator hauler rick cleveland keeps track of the animals by peeking into the crates. during the trip, he sleeps in the truck. >> it's like a baby. i don't leave it. no matter what it is, i don't leave it. >> reporter: now the challenge is to get the alligators out of their crates and into their new home. academy staff members can't wait to see the show. first the gators are taken out for a medical exam. but this rare albino

>> so do you want to jump on him? it's a very nerve-racking process obtaining the animal, packing it up, shipping it, and then getting it, unpacking it, checking its medical condition, and then releasing it into the exhibit. >> reporter: in addition to the albino male, there is a standard color female arriving today. the gators travel with their mouths taped closed. after they're examined, they're put back in their crates to be moved to their exhibit area, but first the handler as to take the tape off. >> let go. drop it. >> reporter: a few minutes later, the crate is lowered into the swamp tank. rick cleveland has been doing this kind of work for 20 years. but you can't be too careful. >> it can be quite tense and so

on. but today's procedure, we rehearsed itoxes and bags of sand and so on. >> reporter: finally, the gators are in the water getting used to their new home. the academy expects them to be a prime attraction. just like the alligators in the original stein heart aquarium. the old swamp tank was one of the most popular exhibits. when it was taken apart, the bronze sea horse railing was saved along with the hand painted tiles put in in 1923. but the new tank has some improvements. and now the rock island in the center has radiant heating. >> when gators feed, they tend to eat large meals and then they like to find somewhere warm to go and sleep. >> reporter: both alligators in the exhibit are american alligators bred in captivity. the white coloring is a natural mutation, but the the wild al bay -- albino babies rarely survive. >> they're removed by predators. it's like a flashing neon sign,

phase two allows them on privately owned parcels. the councilman supports adding billboards but voted against the entire proposal because of phase two. >> once we allow it on private property, there is no legal mechanism through which we can charge a revenue sharing process on private parcels. so it makes it more competitive and more difficult for the city to get the ad revenue. >> reporter: but supporters say there will be plenty of time in between to make changes as long as the ball is rolling. >> it's either weight two years or wait four years. i prefer to work closer to the speed of business than the speed of government. >> reporter: these new billboards won't go up right away on city owned property. there will be a bidding process to select companies. so it will be a few months before we see these new flashy ads. abc 7 news. zble we actually could start seeing those digital billboards across san jose as early as next
