early next weekend. late tonight the bar association called for a delay until the fbi has a chance to investigate the assault allegations. abc news reporter emily rau begins our coverage in washington, d.c. >> nine hours of testimony. there were tears and yelling and both brett kavanaugh and christine blasey ford absolutely certain of what they had to say. brett kavanaugh's first accuser, christine blasey ford took the oath and publicly told her side of the story. >> i believed he was going rape me. brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from yelling. this is what terrified me the most and has had the most lasting impact on my life. it was hard for me to breathe, and i thought that brett was accidentally going to kill me. >> reporter: republican senators deferring their allotted time to veteran sex crimes prosecutor rachel mitchell. democrats asking again and again if blasey ford was sure it was

nominated him, going on to say the senate must vote. the political divisions becoming more and more apparent as the day went on. and important to note here, the senae judiciary committee is still slated to vote on kavanaugh's confirmation tomorrow morning. on capitol hill, i'm emily rau, abc 7 news. >> kavanaugh's fate may depend on a handful of senators. susan collins of maine, lisa murkowski of alaska and jeff flake of arizona along with democrat joe manchin of west virginia. those four met less than an hour after the testimony today ended, but they remained noncommittal. >> emotions ran high during today's hearing, and supporters of both judge brett kavanaugh and dr. christine blasey ford voiced their opinions on capitol hill. abc news anchor dion lim tells us more from washington, d.c. >> this has been nothing short of an historic hearing. dr. christine blasey ford has received so much attention, not only across the country, but around the world and also with her family receiving death

threats, there has been increased security. and for the first time the public hasn't been allowed inside the room, and only a limited number of media have been allowed in the hallways. emotions were high in and out of the hearing room. outside the morning began with a small group of kavanaugh supporters at a nearby park. >> i think this whole thing is just being used by the democrats to stall the confirmation because before he was even named they said they would pull out all the stops to stop whomever trump nominated. >> meanwhile, a larger croup of women's rights advocates marched in support of dr. christine blasey ford. one demonstrator from the bay area who has been arrested four times for protesting the kavanaugh confirmation hearings believes this is a turning point for america, and is optimistic for the vote. >> i don't think the republicans have the votes to pass him. i would urge the republicans to

do the investigation with the federal bureau of investigation if they are indeed going to pursue a vote, they have to have the investigation first or they will lose all credibility with the public. >> reporter: the increased police presence was felt as those supporting blasey ford were told not to hold signs inside government buildings. >> i still think it's ridiculous we can't hold up a piece of paper with writing of our beliefs since i'm standing here with my beliefs written on my body. >> otherwise the day was boast historic and peaceful. the senate judiciary committee is still slated to vote tomorrow with a final vote happening as early as next tuesday. in washington, dion lim, abc 7 news. on the peninsula, some of blasey ford's friends, neighbors rallied to support her at palo alto city hall. people wrote words of encouragement on a giant card that will be delivered to blasey ford. meanwhile, in the east bay, nit in support of blasey ford and against a possible

confirmation of judge kavanaugh, but not everybody on campus feels that way. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard live at cal for us. cornell? >> yeah, larry, ber ber ber berr republicans say they support judge kavanaugh but were outnumbered on campus by those who do not. >> hey, hey, ho ho, kavanaugh has got to go. >> protesters marched down bancroft way shouting down a possible confirmation of judge brett kavanaugh on a day when he denied sexual assault claims by dr. christine blasey ford. >> she is so brave for coming forward. and then for kavanaugh to complain about how he has been negatively affected, like his reputation. >> we believe -- >> blasey ford. >> not only do these students believe dr. blasey ford that. >> know the stakes couldn't be higher. >> i think it's really important to take the stories and testimonies of women seriously, especially when it concerns

something as serious as supreme court nominee. >> did you believe judge kavanaugh? >> yeah, i believe judge kavanaugh 100%. >> the college of berkeley republicans couldn't support this protest march. >> there is no reason for me not to believe what she said. i don't think it was judge kavanaugh who did the assault. >> he predicts kavanaugh will win confirmation. others hope he does not, and dial more protests in the future. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> thank you, cornell. new images tonight show how people across the country were glued to the hearing today. this couple listened closely on a subway train in new york city. this man watching while he underwent chemotherapy at an atlanta hospital. and on this flight from jfk to sfo, all the tvs were tuned to the live testimony. in san francisco we talked to people who were caught up in the hearing today, but also some who were not. this is really a snapshot of politics in america in 2018. you have anger and frustration on both sides, and some expressed a feeling of oversaturation.

changes on bart the wake of recent violent attacks. riders packed a special community meeting in pittsburg tonight. abc 7 reporter kate larsen was there and explains what the transit agency is doing to improve safety. >> get in the elevator, and there is an obviously drugged up man. >> pleas from the bart riding community to do better. at a packed meeting in pittsburg about safety on the system. >> he kept pushing me, pushing me. and it was really kind of scary for me. >> you hop on the train and there is a bottle full of urine sitting right there on the seat. >> in august, bart general manager announced a safety and security action plan after multiple crimes on bart, including the murder of 18-year-old nia wilson who was stabbed to death at oak land's macarthur station in july. john cowl is charged with wilson's murder. a day after wilson's stabbing he was found and arrested. >> we do know that he had previously fair evaded on bart because we gave him a proof of payment citation.

>> on thursday night the bart board of directors voted to expand their inspection teams, adding ten new positions so nights and weekends can be covered. >> does that mean every fare evader commits a crime on bart? absolutely not. >> there was a concern from chief rojas that shows a at disproportionate amount, almost half that people caught without fare between march and august were african american. the board of directors also approved a surveillance technology ordinance at the meeting. in pittsburg, kate larsen, abc 7 news. in the north bay today, 18 people were treated after pepper spray was released inside a walgreens. sky was overhead around 4:00 p.m. at the store on springs road. environmental health crews also responded to help clean up. elon musk is in trouble with the feds and could be removed as the head of tesla. that's because he tweeted last month he secured funding to take his company, tesla, private at $420 a share. the s.e.c. filed a complaint today that says the statements

were false and misleading. if found guilty, musk faces punishment, including being barred from serving as a director of a public company. experts say it's a telling time for musk. >> what musk has done in the last two or three months has been beyond the pale for the ceo of a public company, and now the question is he going to calm down. >> investigators say they do think part of why musk chose the $420 share price was to make a marijuana joke. musk released the statement saying integrity is the most important part of my life and facts will show i never compromised us in any way. crews are working to shore up two steel beams that caused the salesforce center to shut down. abc 7 news was on fremont street when crews removed ceiling panel there's. no other cracks have been found. the next step will be to ease the pressure on the damaged beams that will allow fremont street and the transit center to reopen possibly some time next

week. time to turn our attention to the weather. a nice cool day today. >> looking ahead to weekend, sheer sandhya patel. >> it's going to get cooler as we head towards to weekend. temperatures in the low 60s a the coast, all the way to the low to mid-90s inland. it was still hot inlos angeles police department. i want to show you a stunning view of the moonrising from the east bay hills camera. it was just absolutely gorgeous, despite the fact that we had fog and high clouds around tonight. had a nice view of the moonrising there. as we take a look at live doppler 7 right now, the combination of the fog and high clouds. take a look at the wider picture, taking really a quick look at this first system, which is going go well into northern california. but it may bring us some weekend sprinkles, and then it's this system that we're watching carefully, and there is good reason. so our rain chances will be increasing as we head towards the weekend. but it's really going to be a few sprinkles at best. so 10% chance saturday and sunday. monday and tuesday is when we start to see an increase in the

probability of rain. the latest model is painting a very wet picture here on tuesday, so get ready. a live picture from our emeryville camera. visibility is good from the vantage point. temperatures right now 50, 60s. a live picture from san jose, and you will notice some clouds are around as we look towards the shark tank. much cooler tomorrow around the bay and inland. light shower can't be ruled out between saturday and sunday morning. a better chance of showers early next week. tomorrow morning you may need your wipers briefly during the commute due to spotty drizzle. certainly will be foggy around the bay area. just allow yourself extra time for the commute. mid 40s to the mid-50s. we'll need a sweater or jacket. for the afternoon, the places in the low to mid-90s inland are going to be in the low 80s tomorrow. you're really going to notice a difference. it's going to be mild. 80 in livermore. 76, san jose. right near the coast, 64 in san francisco and 61 in half moon bay. you will see lingering clouds. we're going fast forward to

saturday. your weekend will feature plenty of clouds. then as we head into saturday afternoon, you'll notice a few showers, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00, try to make their way across the north bay. i would keep the umbrella handy if i were you, but it's not a game changer. saturday evening a few showers and sunday morning a few drops. monday is when we have a system that is going to link up with possibly moisture from current hurricane rosa. if that happens monday afternoon, we'll see a few showers in the north bay. look at how wet tuesday is looking now, even a slight possibility of a thunderstorm, mix of rain and snow in the sierra. stay tuned. you can always download the accuweather app and track weather any time you want. the morning drizzle, cooler afternoon. saturday, sunday, maybe a couple of sprinkles. nothing more than that. but monday, tuesday, start looking for umbrellas, and don't forget you may need to switch out your short sleeves for long sleeves as temperatures will be well below average for this time of year. >> not ready to do that yet. >> not ready. >> it's a little early.
