begins our coverage in washington, d.c. >> nine hours of testimony. there were tears and yelling and both brett kavanaugh and christine blasey ford absolutely certain of what they had to say. brett kavanaugh's first accuser, christine blasey ford took the oath and publicly told her side of the story. >> i believed he was going rape me. brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from yelling. this is what terrified me the most and has had the most lasting impact on my life. it was hard for me to breathe, and i thought that brett was accidentally going to kill me. >> reporter: republican senators deferring their allotted time to veteran sex crimes prosecutor rachel mitchell. democrats asking again and again if blasey ford was sure it was kavanaugh who attacked her. >> what you are telling us is this could not be a case of mistaken identity. >> absolutely. no. >> what degree of certainty do you believe brett kavanaugh

assault you'd? >> 100%. >> reporter: but kavanaugh also certain. >> i'm not questioning that dr. ford may have been sexually assaulted by some person in some place at some time. but i have never done this to her or to anyone. >> at times tearful, kavanaugh then visibly angry. >> this whole two-week effort has been a calculated and orchestrated political hit. this is a circus. >> some senators unleashing their own frustration. >> this is the most unethical sham since i've been in politics. >> president trump tweeting shortly after the hearings wrapped up judge kavanaugh showed america exactly why i nominated him, going on to say the senate must vote. the political divisions becoming more and more apparent as the day went on. and important to note here, the senae judiciary committee is still slated to vote on

kavanaugh's confirmation tomorrow morning. on capitol hill, i'm emily rau, abc 7 news. >> kavanaugh's fate may depend on a handful of senators. susan collins of maine, lisa murkowski of alaska and jeff flake of arizona along with democrat joe manchin of west virginia. those four met less than an hour after the testimony today ended, but they remained noncommittal. >> emotions ran high during today's hearing, and supporters of both judge brett kavanaugh and dr. christine blasey ford voiced their opinions on capitol hill. abc news anchor dion lim tells us more from washington, d.c. >> this has been nothing short of an historic hearing. dr. christine blasey ford has received so much attention, not only across the country, but around the world and also with her family receiving death threats, there has been increased security. and for the first time the public hasn't been allowed inside the room, and only a limited number of media have been allowed in the hallways. h.

outside the morning began with a small group of kavanaugh supporters at a nearby park. >> i think this whole thing is just being used by the democrats to stall the confirmation because before he was even named they said they would pull out all the stops to stop whomever trump nominated. >> meanwhile, a larger croup o women's rights advocates marched in support of dr. christine blasey ford. one demonstrator from the bay area who has been arrested four times for protesting the kavanaugh confirmation hearings believes this is a turning point for america, and is optimistic for the vote. >> i don't think the republicans have the votes to pass him. i would urge the republicans to do the investigation with the federal bureau of investigation if they are indeed going to pursue a vote, they have to have the investigation first or they will lose all credibility with

the public. >> reporter: tincreased police presence was felt as those supporting blasey ford were told not to hold signs inside government buildings. >> i still think it's ridiculous we can't hold up a piece of paper with writing of our beliefs since i'm standing here with my beliefs written on my body. >> otherwise the day was boast historic and peaceful. the senate judiciary committee is still slated to vote tomorrow with a final vote happening as early as next tuesday. in washington, dion lim, abc 7 news. on the peninsula, some of blasey ford's friends, neighbors rallied to support her at palo alto city hall. people wrote words of encouragement on a giant card that will be delivered to blasey ford. meanwhile, in the east bay, students at uc berkeley rallied tonight in support of blasey ford and against a possible confirmation of judge kavanaugh, but not everybody on campus feels that way. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard live at cal for us. cornell? >> yeah, larry, b b b b b b

republicans say they support judge kavanaugh but were outnumbered on campus by those who do not. >> hey, hey, ho ho, kavanaugh has got to go. >> protesters marched down bancroft way shouting down a possible confirmation of judge brett kavanaugh on a day when he denied sexual assault claims by dr. christine blasey ford. >> she is so brave for coming forward. and then for kavanaugh to complain about how he has been negatively affected, like his reputation. >> we believe -- >> blasey ford. >> not only do these students believe dr. blasey ford that. >> know the stakes couldn't be higher. >> i think it's really important to take the stories and testimonies of women seriously, especially when it concerns something as serious as supreme court nominee. >> did you believe judge kavanaugh? >> yeah, i believe judge kavanaugh 100%. >> the college of berkeley republicans couldn't support this protest march. >> there is no reason for me not

to believe what she said. i don't think it was judge kavanaugh who did the assault. >> he predicts kavanaugh will win confirmation. others hope he does not, and dial more protests in the future. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> thank you, cornell. new images tonight show how people across the country were glued to the hearing today. this couple listened closely on a subway train in new york city. this man watching while he underwent chemotherapy at an atlanta hospital. and on this flight from jfk to sfo, all the tvs were tuned to the live testimony. in san francisco we talked to people who were caught up in the hearing today, but also some who were not. this is really a snapshot of politics in america in 2018. you have anger and frustration on both sides, and some expressed a feeling of oversaturation. >> there has been, you know, a nastiness brewing for a long time. >> there is two people saying completely different things. >> this whole mess is just upsetting. >> i think a lot of people lose.

>> whose the loser here? >> america. >> it's sad to see the most powerful nation in the world behaving like utter children. >> for many americans, political leanings shaped their opinions of today's hearing. christine pilosi joined she is a former prosecutor and finds christine blasey ford believable. >> she told a painful truth and spoke it in a detailed way. >> former california republican party chairman tom delchiaro shared his opinions at 6:00. >> the problem with today is we've got people not trusting the process, and that becomes a pox for the democrats unfortunately because they held this story as opposed, and it fuels the kavanaugh side and creates greater division.
