2:00, we're turning partly cloudy with 70s in our inland valleys. and looking at another mild and comfortable night, but we still are tracking a pretty good rainmaker on the way for tuesday. details, coming up. carolyn? >> lisa, thank you. new developments this morning surrounding the fbi's investigation of supreme cout nominee brett kavanaugh. we've learned fbi agents have contacted deborah ramirez. she is the woman accusing kavanaugh of assaulting her while at yale. a lawyer for the third woman who's accused him of sexual misconduct says his client has not yet heard from the fbi. president trump weighed in briefly on the investigation. >> but the fbi, i believe, is doing a really great job. they have been all over already. >> the fbi will report its findings to the white house. the investigation is supposed to be wrapped up by friday. after the fbi investigation was announced, the senate adjourned until tomorrow. it's possible there will be a

vote on kavanaugh's nomination friday. republicans need 51 votes to confirm. if arizona senator jeff flake remains in support of kavanaugh, there will be 48 pledged republicans. senator susan collins and lisa murkowski have said they are undecided. senator mike enzi has not announced his stance. the kavanaugh hearings drew tens of thousands of protesters. among them, a bay area couple who had no plans to join in the demonstrations in the nation's capital. they were just in town to attend a family event. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has their story from albany. >> reporter: among thousands of protesters at the u.s. supreme court on friday, a bay area couple, who had no plans to visit the high court, much less demonstrate in front of it. on their trip to washington, d.c. for a family wedding. >> that feeling of feeling so

powerless and needing to do something. >> i told this committee that i wanted a hearing as soon as possible. >> reporter: but once they heard the testimony on capitol hill, bonnie and abraham elterman felt compelled to do something they'd rarely done before. >> i'd actually only protested twice in my life. and the first one was the woman's march and now it's at the supreme court. >> reporter: abraham took this picture of bonnie holding a sign on the steps of the supreme court. >> of course, it affects women the most, but it affects everybody, because it's an issue of respect and decency. >> reporter: barely 24 hours removed from their experiences at the supreme court in d.c., the eltermans wanted to keep their activism rolling by hosting a fund-raiser here at the coffee shop they own in albany. the couple decided the big dinner with albany event would be the perfect backdrop for a bake sale to raise money for bay area women against rape, with a big assist from their employees at hal's office coffee.

>> they felt like this is their way of coping, their way of feeling active and their way of staying engaged. >> reporter: after all, the elterman's found after their unplanned activism in d.c., they couldn't just sit and watch, not now, not at this time in history. >> you know, we still hold on to anita hill from so long ago and it just felt like, wow, here we are again and not a whole lot has changed. >> reporter: in albany, laura anthony, abc 7 news. in the east bay, berkeley police recovered a body at the berkeley marina. a person called police after spotting it floating near a pier. that was around 8:00 yesterday morning. it's not clear yet if that body has been identified. all lanes of highway 280 are back open in san jose after this van caught fire. it happened just before 8:30 last night at the interchange with 101. several lanes were blocked while crews moved the van off the road. no word yet on whether anyone was hurt.

as the first anniversary of the north bay wildfires approaches, remembrance events will be held throughout sonoma county. today is a celebration of heros in santa rosa. this is video of a vigil shortly after the fires broke out. today, there'll be live music, food trucks, and other activities to honor the unsung heros. the free event starts at noon at courthouse square. we have a list of other events on our website, abc7news.com. in the east bay, with a special gathering to honor mollie tibbetts, the iowa college student that was murdered over the summer. tibbetts started kindergarten in piedmont and left a lasting impression with many in her church community. here's abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard. >> reporter: those who knew mollie tibbetts brought candles to the center of corpus christi church to fill it with light, the same light shown by her bright smile. >> the question that is asked most often is, why?

>> reporter: father leo edgerly tried making sense of mollie's tragic death. he knew the tibbetts family when they were church members and mollie attended corpus christi school before moving to iowa. >> not living long enough to see her 21st birthday, but she lived long enough to know how. >> reporter: tibbetts, a $20-year-old student at the university of iowa, went missing last july. her body was found a month later. 24-year-old cristhian rivera, an undocumented immigrant, was arrested and charged with her murder. a family friend read a letter from mollie's mother, laura calderwood. >> we are honored that for a brief period of time, you got to know our mollie. >> reporter: mollie's father, rob tibbetts, attended the service, but declined to speak with us. he asked friends to be kind and generous to each other going forward. in other words, be a little like mollie.

in piedmont, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> now, the man accused of murdering tibbetts is still waiting to be arraigned. cristhian rivera has claimed memory loss prior to confronting mollie tibbetts. experts say this could set up a defense over mihis mental state. no date has been set for his next court appearances. crews are expected to start repairs at the salesforce transit center in san francisco today. the $2.2 billion transit hub remains closed because of two cracked beams. materials were scheduled to arrive yesterday. now, that transit center is expected to remain closed through next week. fremont street remains closed between mission and howard. buses are still running out of the temporary terminal down the street. in just a few hours, thousands of runners, thousands are going to join the fight against breast cancer.

they'll take part in the susan g. komen's race for the cure. we have a live look at our roof camera. the annual 5k run in san francisco starts at 8:30 this morning at embarcadero plaza. so far this year, the race has raised more than $200,000 for breast cancer research and treatment. the goal is $300,000. there'll be a breast cancer survivor tribute ceremony at 10:00. abc 7 news reporter kate larsen is emceeing today's event. well, lisa argen is here now with a preview of your accuweather forecast. >> well, it's certainly going to be a little bit nicer than yesterday. we had some spitting rain in spots, up to 0.007, pretty much done with that until a stronger system hits us next week. 61 in san francisco, so a warmer day on the way to start the week, but then we'll talk about rainfall totals and a look ahead

storage unit. burglars apparently broke into her unit in san leandro and took the ashes of her father and grandmother and family photo items. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo has more. >> reporter: she says the high cost of rent forced her from her hayward apartment last year. and while she's in between homes, robertson has put all shshe owns into public storage. friday morning, she got the call that someone cut the lock to her storage unit. one glance and robertson realized that the crooks got away with the most valuable items inside. >> my grandmother's ashes, my dad's ashes, all the antique stuff that she left for me. i was her only granddaughter that she left for me, all of that's gone. >> reporter: robertson also lost several pairs of shoes, a leather couch, and other items worth some money. material things she says can all be replaced. robertson estimates the burglars got away with more than $12,000 worth of her belongings.

and now she's just begging for the safe return of those album and the ashes. she says those responsible may have mistook a duffel bag full of albums and boxes full of ashes for things of monetary value. >> they looked more like juewely boxes. >> reporter: her grandmother's ashes were kept in a wooden box with musical notes and had the name "also robertson" engraved and her father's ashes were kept in a burgundy box. robertson is afraid these memories are gone forever. >> i just thought everything would be safe here. and i wouldn't have never brought my grandmother and my father's ashes here if i thought somebody was going to break in here and steal them. >> in san leandro, i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. elon musk will give up one of his leadership roles at tesla to settle a complaint from the

nonprofit. musk will remain ceo, but is stepping down as tesla's chairman for at least three years. tesla and musk will also pay $40 million. the s.e.c. sued musk last week, accusing him of misleading investors when he tweeted last month about buying out their stocks. sheriff's deputies arrested nearly 70 animal rights activists following a protest at a petaluma chicken farm. the farm provides poultry to amazon and whole foods. several people called 911 after protesters stormed mccoy's poultry services yesterday afternoon. deputies say some of the protesters broke into buildings and grabbed chicken. a group called direct action everywhere even live streamed what was happening on facebook. the suspects. could now face felony burglary charges. big city lights will soon be coming to one spot in the south bay. san jose has lifted a decades-old ban on electronic billboards as a way to generate

more revenue. abc 7 news reporter carlos asado shows us where all of these buildboards will be popping up. >> reporter: for more than 30 years, billboards have been banned on city-owned property across san jose. things might be looking brighter after the city council voted tuesday to lift the bans concerning commercial signage. >> we've been talking about it for years and we're looking for some ways to make some money. >> reporter: he's in favor of the electronic advertising that will pop up in downtown san jose as well as near the airport. the downtown sites could bring in $200,000 in revenue each year. >> numerous community meetings, with a lot of outreach and we decided on a small rollout. >> reporter:ed the ordinance consists of two parts. phase one allows these billboards on 17 city-owned sites like outside the convention center. phase 2

owned parcels. >> once we law it on private property, there is no legal mechanism through which we can charge revenue-sharing process on private parcels. so in essence, it makes it more competitive and more difficult for the city to get the ad revenue. >> reporter: but supporters say there will be plenty of time in between to make changes, as long as the ball is rolling. >> it's either wait two years or wait four years and i prefer to work closer to the speed of business than the speed of government. >> these new billboards won't go up right away on city-owned property. there will be a bidding process to select companies, so it will be a few months before we see these new flashy ads. in san jose, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. some south bay residents have prepared for flu season by getting free flu shots. abc 7 was in san jose as people received the vaccine downtown yesterday. health experts believe it's a good idea for everyone to get a

flu shot, especially seniors and those with pre-existing health conditions. >> they are most at risk of developing complications to flu. so we definitely advocate for our seniors to come in and get their flu shots. >> santa clara valley medical center plans on holding more free flu shot clinics on saturdays, next month, and in november. we have more information on our website, abc7news.com. last year's flu season was one of the deadliest in decades. 80,000 americans died. that according to the centers for disease control. that's the most in 40 years. during a typical season, 12,000 to 56,000 people will die from the flu. good sunday morning to you. waking up to a lot of cloud cover and mild temperatures. we'll see most of the cloud cover in the morning and it will thin out throughout the afternoon in some parts of the

bay. here's live doppler 7. and you'll notice that we are looking at extensive clouds. the deck is about 2,000 or 3,000 feet. there's a system to the north of us. and there'll be yet another system that's going to interact with this hurricane. you heard about it. it's going to be providing cloud cover and also rain, widespread rain into tuesday. so, as we look at this, it moves into the tropical pacific here, and could bring anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of rain around baja. right now it's a category 1 with winds of 85 miles an hour. and it will continue to bring some very heavy rain, potential of mud slides le s here, up to inches not out of the question. right now, numbers are pretty mild. 52 in san francisco. 58 in fremont. it's 59 in san jose. start.'re looking at that mild numbers warmer than yesterday. actually, yesterday was pretty mild, as well, in the morning. so without the clear sky and that radiational cooling, we're looking at a pretty comfortable outlook for your sunday morning.

so starting out mostly cloudy, partly cloudy in the afternoon. and then a chance of showers ate in the day, monday. monday's going to be a warm day, southerly winds out ahead of this system. and then looking for a rainy tuesday morning commute. now, things could change between now and then, but it's looking like the heavy rain comes in on tuesday. i should say, moderate rain. if you've got some leather and want to head out to san francisco for the fulsome street fair or just have some fun, we're looking at temperatures in the 60s today. a lot of cloud cover. it will thin out from time to time. we'll call it a mix of clouds and sun. but we are bringing in our storm impact scale for this next system. it's a one, and that means a light system for tuesday. light to moderate showers. winds won't be a factor, anywhere from 0.1 to 0.6 of an inch of rain. it's going to be a warm day on monday. temperatures will climb into the 80s. and look what happens by monday night. 8:00, the rain pushing into the north bay. i pause this here very early tuesday morning, 4:00 in the morning. so you'll notice that the rain

of a long commute. 60% of employees report their company hasn't done anything to alleviate their commute concerns. if you've ever had a water pipe suddenly burst in your house, you know that you just can't wait a week for a plumber. a san francisco viewer says her kitchen was flooding, but her insurance company simply could not find anyone to help. so she turned to 7 on your side's michael finney. >> the water was here, at my feet. coming from under the sink. >> reporter: elizabeth rory shows what happened when the pipes burst in her kitchen. >> when i turned the water on, yeah. the water would leak out of these pipes. i thought the house was going to just flood. >> reporter: she immediately called her insurance company, fidelity national home warranty. >> they didn't have someone that could come out today. that they would call me back. >> reporter: she says the company told her to wait a week, but this was an emergency. >> it was the biggest mess that

you ever wanted to see. it would have continued to leak. it would have destroyed the wood. >> reporter: so fidelity agreed to let her find her own plumber and it would reimburse the cost. >> i got three estimates and i thought, who can come today? >> reporter: she hired a plumber who came out right away and replaced the pipes and disposal. it cost $2,800. >> thank god it doesn't leak anymore. you can see that. >> reporter: everything worked out until she filed her claim. she says fidelity reimburse $1100, less than what she paid. >> and i thought, why, when you preauthorized me. >> reporter: this letter preauthorized her to hire her own plumber and didn't specify what she could spend, only that fidelity would reimburse a standard typical cost. elizabeth says she got a few estimates that were only a few dollars apart. but now she was out of pocket more than $1,000. >> reporter: my money that i use

confirmed dead following an earthquake and tsunami. one of the hardest-hit cities is polu where thousands of families were destroyed. hundreds were taking part in a beach festival when the tsunami hit. the quake measured 7.5 magnitude. the tsunami was as high as 20 feet in some places. and new drone video gives us a better view of the devastation in indonesia. areas remain underwater following the tsunami with debris scattered in the streets. you can also see some of the buildings that crumbled following that earthquake. now to the fbi investigation of supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. we know of at least one person that agents really want to talk to. agents have contacted deborah ramirez. se's the woman accusing kavanaugh of assaulting her while at yale. last week's hearing in washington, d.c. drew tens of thousands of people in protest,

beacon beach in encinitas, california. >> at the time, it was opening season for lobster season. there was multiple other people in the water diving. the shark was seen in the water by the bystanders. they weren't sure exactly what type of shark it was. >> reporter: one of the boy's rescuers described the terrifying scene. >> i realized that he was yelling, i got bit! help! help, help! once we threw him up on the kayak and started heading in and that's when i looked back and a shark was behind the kayak. >> reporter: lifeguards treating the boy on the beach. he was then airlifted to a nearby hospital with traumatic injuries to his upper torso. >> this patient received very rapid and quick response by the trauma team, the emergency room. >> reporter: the beach now closed for at least 48 hours. >> our number one concern was public safety. we're asking people not to go in the water. >> reporter: signs have been posted warning people to avoid the area. mark rimlard, abc news. well, a 58-hour vigil begins

in las vegas today, honoring the 58 lives lost in the festival shooting one year ago. greg zanis built one cross for each victim when the shooting happened last year. now the crosses are back on display, ahead of tomorrow's anniversary. each hour, zanis is planning to hold a vigil for one victim. a woman who was shot in the head at that concert nearly a year ago is talking about her life after that terrifying night. here's rob mcmillan from our sister station in los angeles. >> we find out what we're made of when stuff like this happens. >> reporter: christina and danny staples were there that night in las vegas. when the shots rang out, everything changed forever. >> she took a shot to the head. right in the front. the bullet fragmented >> reporter: christina was in a coma for three weeks after having brain surgery. danny's aunt terry was there,

too. >> he never left her side. he slept next to her every night at the hospital. >> reporter: eventually, she woke up. >> i don't think she spoke for quite a long time, but you could tell she was with us. >> i had to learn to eat. i had to learn to walk, i had to learn to write. >> reporter: and figure out how to speak again. danny remembers that day well. >> the speech therapist was asking her what she calls me, so what do you call this man? and she said, my boo. i said, oh, and that was the first thing i'd heard her say. >> reporter: nearly a year later, she's made incredible progress, but there's obviously still a long way to go. >> what's life like? >> pretty confusing. >> reporter: confusing, because their roles as parents have changed. >> it's hard, because chris was the rock in this house. >> i went from being a normal three-member family to a family

just trying to figure it out again. >> give mom a kiss. >> reporter: and for 2-year-old harper. >> i want down. >> it's complicated. no! let me down. >> the connection, it's not there. she wants her mommy back. so it's really hard. >> and her mommy is back, but just not the mommy she remembers. >> right. >> reporter: but they're fortunate that, for them, anyway. life goes on. they recently attended their first concert since the shooting. >> pretty overwhelming, emotion. it was an emotional night. >> reporter: christina still needs a lot of rehabilitation. >> sometimes it's hard to even remember what she looked like before the shooting. >> reporter: but this family is looking forward. >> i'm not so certain i want to go back blond. i want to stay brown like my natural color. >> reporter: one year after the nation's deadliest mass shooting, danny still can't talk about it, but looking back, they know how fortunate they really

highlight rs for you coming up tonight starting a at 5:00. until then, have a great day. good sunday morning to you. last day of september and we're going to be pretty might today with a lot of cloud cover. temperatures, though, below average. not only today, but it looks like for the week ahead. as we look at live doppler 7, you'll notice all the cloud cover, keeping us very mild in the 50s and 60s. a system to the north of us. there's another system that will replace this one. and it's going to interact with this hurricane. this is rosa with winds of about 85 miles an hour. continues on a track to the north at 12 miles an hour. it will weaken and as it weakens, it's going to bring some flooding rains to the baja peninsula here, anywhere from 3 to 6 inches, upwards of 10 inches. potential for mud slides and those two systems interact and bring us some pretty good rain here for tuesday. right now, it is 61 degrees in oakland. look how mild in san francisco. so it has been a mild start the past couple of mornings, without that clear sky.

we've been insulated overnight, some 50s over into san ramon. 58 in livermore. and we'll be looking at these numbers throughout the day today, feeling like, not bad for september, but we will look for the numbers to bump up tomorrow out ahead of the system coming in on tuesday. so 2 to 7 degrees warmer than we were yesterday. and we'll have the cloud cover throughout the morning hours for everyone. then it thins out, mainly in the east bay and south bay, but we'll call it a mix of clouds and sun. a chance of showers coming into play monday night in the north bay, and then they'll be widespread overnight, into tuesday, you get your head wet right in time, unfortunately, for the commute. so today, raiders will host the cleveland browns with temperatures around 70 degrees, from time to time we'll have a sunny sky, and then the clouds will move on in. numbers will be mild. we're going to bring in our storm impact scale for tuesday. it's a 1, exclusive to abc 7, bringing in light to moderate showers, franywhere from a tent

to two-tenths. first significant system in five and a half months. some welcome rain. look at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. we're pretty cloudy, ahead of southerly winds. we'll be warm and looking at the rain moving into sonoma and marin later on. and through the overnight hours, it continues to push through the bay area. this is 4:00. it will change between now and then, but for the most part, you'll need to know this will try to push through the bay area, right around the morning commute. 7:00, 8:00 in the east bay, in the south bay. here we are at 8:30 and some lingering showers into the south bay. but the evening commute on tuesday looks much better. we're looking at partly cloudy skies. so interesting to note for october 2nd, we're looking at about a quarter to a half-inch of rain in some spots. but we will be looking at those slick roadways and perhaps some trouble out there on tuesday. so maybe you can give yourself a little bit of extra time. highs today, underneath those partly cloudy conditions, low 60s, half moon bay, 71 for you in oakland with upper 70s in
