as the one-week investigation gets under way, another yale classmate is raising a red flag and reportedly taking his concerns to the fbi. abc's emily rau has the new details from d.c. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and maggie. president trump is now supportive of this fbi investigation that he ordered with the conditions that it be limited in scope and done by friday. the fbi investigation into accusations against brett kavanaugh is officially under way while lawyers for christine blasey ford say so far, agents have not spoken to her. the fbi has talked with kavanaugh's second accuser, deborah ramirez, a yale classmate who claims kavanaugh exposed himself at a dorm party. a source tells abc news ramirez provided investigators with a list of witnesses. on "60 minutes," democrat chris coons and republican jeff flake who forced the investigation

agreeing -- >> if judge kavanaugh is shown to have lied to the committee, nomination is over? >> yes. i would think so. >> as you're sitting there listening to dr. ford, what are you hearing? what are you thinking? >> i'm hearing a very smart, anguished person who did not want to be testifying in front of us, and meanwhile my phone is just blowing up. it was stunning, the number of people i heard from during the hearing. >> and they were saying what? >> you have known me a very long time, and i was raped as a child and i have never told anyone before right now, and i'm sharing it with you. >> reporter: the investigators do not plan to interview kavanaugh's classmates who contradict his testimony about his drinking. >> now isn't that relevant given that there clearly was drinking going on? at least it's alleged at the party? >> no. i think you're trying to portray him as a stumbling, bumbling drunk, gang rapist. >> reporter: overnight, a former

college friend writing this letter in "the new york times" saying, quote, in denying the possibility that he ever blacked out from drinking and in downplaying the degree and frequency of his drinking, brett has not told the truth. also not being questioned, julie swetnick who claims in a sworn statement she witnessed a drunk kavanaugh mistreat women at parties in high school. kavanaugh strongly denies all allegations. and senator dianne feinstein is now asking the fbi for the exact directions that president trump provided. the white house said over the weekend the president is not micromanaging the investigation. kendis, maggie? >> certainly paying attention to it no doubt. emily rau from d.c. for us. in the meantime, the former fbi director james comey calls the one-week time limit imposed on this investigation idiotic. >> but a "new york times" op-ed comey says, quote, the fbi is up

for this. it's not as hard as the republicans hope it will be. >> and we spoke with a former fbi special agent. steve gomez, and we asked him how the fbi can pull off this investigation with the time constraint and such a divisive climate. >> they can definitely do this investigation in a week because the fbi is going to allocate every agent, analyst and professional staff member to this investigation. it's going to be the highest priority investigation during this week-long period. so as far as resources, they have them, but then it's a matter of making sure that all the witnesses are available for these interviews to ensure that they are able to get as many leads covered as possible and they should be able to do it, but you just don't know what is going to come up during these interviews that could create additional investigation. >> interesting indeed. experts say it's likely the fbi has not talked to professor ford yet because they already have her testimony from last week and because of the time limit they face. and breaking overnight, u.s. negotiators have finalizing a

new trade agreement with canada. it's meant to replace nafta, so the deal also includes mexico. it offers american farmers greater access to the canadian dairy market and gives canada some new protection if president trump imposes tariffs on cars and auto parts imported into the u.s. canadian prime minister justin trudeau called it a good day for canada after the deal was finalized overnight. it should be signed into effect by the end of next month. we have just learned the death toll from that devastating tsunami in indonesia has now topped 1,200 people. new images are coming in as rescue teams try to reach the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: this morning, an island in ruins, home after home along the coast in central indonesia flattened. new video shows fishermen running for their lives as tsunami waves come ashore after

a powerful earthquake. this woman rushed to safety after being trapped inside a restaurant. authorities fear the death toll could drastically rise as they search the debris. most of the rescue and recovery efforts focusing on the city of palu. an untold number remain trapped underneath collapsed buildings. abc's james longman making his way to the hardist hit areas. >> we're in tokyo on the way to jakarta and indonesia, and they have been struck by that 7.5 magnitude earthquake causing a massive tsunami. possibly 20 feet of water hitting the island there. the devastation looks horrific. >> reporter: amid the devastation, this one story of heroism emerging. this 21-year-old air traffic controller stayed inside the control tower of the airport as the earthquake struck, ensuring one last flight could fake off safely. authorities say his decision cost him australia life, but possibly saved hundreds. the indonesian president

surveying the area, handing out rations and telling survivors heavy equipment is on the way. coastal towns remain cut off by downed bridges and communication lines. at least 17,000 people are now homeless, and experts say a tsunami warning system could have saved lives, and it was supposed to be built after the 2004 tsunami, but the project has been delayed by bureaucracy. it's time now for a look at your weather this monday morning. tropical storm rosa is bringing heavy rain and strong winds to mexico's baja peninsula and to the southwestern u.s. the storm's outer bands dumped heavy rain in arizona making driving conditions there treacherous. flash flood warnings and watches have been issued in five states. authorities are also concerned about mudslides in areas burned by recent wildfires. checking today's high temperatures of 86 in phoenix, 80 stretching autoway to -- all the way to d.c., but still cold

we're back with new video showing the dramatic rescue after a jet came down into shallow water in the south pacific near an airport in micronesia. navy sailors raced to the air new guinea flight on friday and searching the plane. 1 of the 47 passengers is missing though the airline says the person did make it off the

plane safely. four others remain hospitalized. police in allentown, pennsylvania believe a deadly car explosion may have been intentional. saturday's blast in the downtown area left three people dead. autopsies today will determine their identities. investigators believe the person who caused the explosion was among the victims. witnesses say the blast shook the whole neighborhood. >> we heard an explosion go off. first we were, like, maybe somebody set fireworks off or -- we came out and we looked past the 7-eleven we could see a billow of smoke. >> police are calling the explosion an isolated incident and insist there is no threat to the community. facebook could be slapped with a major fine because of its latest data breach. that fine from european regulators that could climb to more than $1.6 billion. facebook is found to have violated europe's new privacy laws. the data breach that was announced late last week compromised the accounts of more than 50 million users. california governor jerry

parking lots like the one i'm obsolete. we have video from alameda and contra costa county leaders. they said local government should be making decisions about what communities look like, not the state. but their push fell short. the governor signed the bill last night. it gives bart more control over housing projects on its land around its stations. now, bart has a goal of building 20,000 housing units by 2040. bart released a statement saying, with the passage of ab2923, lawmakers are sending a message to all local policymakers about the urgent need to build housing now. at bart, we could not agree more. this bill limits a city's ability to interfere with how bart zones its properties. so expect to see changes
