correspondent, mary bruce, is tracking it all. she is there on capitol hill. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the clock the ticking on this one-week fbi investigation, but this morning, there are new questions about the scope of this review and what it could all mean for kavanaugh's nomination and we're now learning new details about how this all came about, that rare bipartisan deal that sparked this investigation. this tough confrontation between a protester and republican senator jeff flake set the wheels in motion for that surprise deal. >> why not wait for the investigation? >> reporter: the protester begging him to hold out for an fbi investigation into judge kavanaugh. >> what are you doing, sir? >> they wre clearly passionate and determined that i hear them. >> reporter: his close friend, democratic senator chris coons, offered a potential solution. >> i had wish we would take a >>orte listened intely, and when the democrat finished speaking, flake stood up, motioning for coons to

follow him out of the room. >> we literally squeezed into a phone booth, and we can barely fit in, talking to another senator and there is this whole committee outside. >> reporter: almost two hours later, flake announced the dramatic move demanding a delay so the fbi can investigate, suggesting that he wouldn't support kavanaugh unless they did. this morning, that investigation is now under way, but weighing heavily on the outcome, whether kavanaugh misled the committee and if that would kill his nomination. >> oh, yes, i would think so. >> reporter: after resisting it for weeks, president trump is now embracing the investigation. >> they have free rein. they'll be doing things we never even thought of, and hopefully at the conclusion, everything will be fine. >> reporter: but democrats worry the white house is limiting the scope of the investigation. >> we are hearing reports that they are somehow trying to limit this. i'm very concerned about this because the white house should not be allowed to micromanage an fbi investigation. >> reporter: the white house is pushing back.

now this morning, rachel mitchell, the republican prosecutor hired to lead the republican questioning during this hearing, she has reportedly written a memo outlining why she says brett kavanaugh could not have charges brought against him. reportedly writing, a he said/she said case is hard to prove but this case is even weaker than that. democrats of course are arguing that this is a job interview, not a trial. >> absolutely. all right, mary, thank you. >> and the fbi given that one week to investigate the allegations of sexual misconduct against kavanaugh. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has all the latest on what this probe will entail and who the fbi will be interviewing. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: amy, good morning. there is not much time. only five days to complete the background investigation of judge kavanaugh. with democrats already raising questions about whether it's too narrow in scope. under pressure and time restraints, the fbi on sunday interviewed one of judge kavanaugh's accusers. deborah ramirez spoke with fbi

agents for a couple of hours, telling her graphic story, claiming a drunken kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party at yale university. a source with knowledge of ramirez's interview with the fbi tells abc news that she provided agents with a list of witnesses who might be able to corroborate her story. two of her classmates who claim kavanaugh drank to the point of staggering tell abc news they have not yet been contacted by the fbi. >> senator, isn't testimony about judge kavanaugh's drinking in college if you are interviewing deborah ramirez, isn't that relevant? >> he's had six fbi background checks, he's been on the political stage for 26 years. he's not a stumbling, bumbling drunk. >> reporter: kavanaugh who denies all allegations of sexual assault also says he was never an out of control drunk. >> i did not drink beer to the point of blacking out. >> reporter: the fbi's background investigation is also focusing on christine blasey ford who sparked the controversy. she said kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while his high

school classmate, mark judge, looked on. >> brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from yelling. >> reporter: judge said he has no recollection of the alleged encounter. dr. ford named at least six people who she believes were present at the party. this morning, it's unclear if the fbi has contacted these or other potential witnesses and what avenues they will be pursuing to corroborate dr. ford's allegations. one possible lead could be kavanaugh's own calendars and this reference to a july 1982 date, a gathering kavanaugh listed along with a number of people ford claims were present on the night of the assault. but sources say the white house directed the fbi to focus specifically on allegations made by ford and ramirez. it's unclear if the bureau would need permission from the president to follow up on new witnesses and evidence gathered. dr. ford's attorney says she has not been contacted by the fbi, and the third accuser, julie swetnick, also says she has not been called. also this morning,

another yale classmate is telling "the new york times" kavanaugh was someone who drank excessively, sometimes becoming belligerent and aggressive in the process. the fbi again is in the middle of a white house controversy with questions about how much leeway the white house will give it to investigate. george? >> okay, pierre, thanks. let's bring in dan abrams and brad garrett. brad, let me begin with you. james comey saying the fbi can do this in a week, we can handle this, is he right? >> we can handle some of it in a week. the problem, george, is if you are going to look at somebody who has a drinking problem potentially, and you want to look at his character and you want to look at individuals that he actually associated with in high school and college, i think it's unrealistic you can do that in a week. >> it's not clear that they're looking at the drinking problem or whether he told the truth about it. >> right. the fundamental questi nows, what exactly are they investigating? are they investigating dr. ford's allegations and trying to assess, did that happen or not? >> that's easy. >> that's relatively easy, right?

a limited number of witnesses, a limited number of questions. but are they investigating whether he lied in front of the senate? that's a separate question because then you get into all the various details about exactly what he said about his own drinking, about his yearbook, et cetera, and then you've got a much wider potential group of people you have got to talk to. >> go ahead. >> you could do that because when you do a background investigation, you look at honesty, temperament, and those things -- >> normal background investigations. >> i realize that, george, but the point being is, there is a big argument that the fbi would not be able to go beyond sort of this interviewing people and i don't think that's accurate. >> what do they do -- for example, we now have this professor in "the new york times," chad ludington, who says he was a classmate of brett kavanaugh's who says he is not telling the truth about drinking. says he is going to give that to the fbi. what are they going to do with

it? >> they are going to interview him because that goes to honesty. if this assault occurred, did he black out? if he blacked out, he may not remember the assault occurred. >> and what we know they are going to do is put this together in what they call these 302s, these reports of interviews. the question is then what happens to that? who gets it? is it revealed to the public? >> this is not a criminal investigation, the same way that the proceeding was not a criminal proceeding. that means that they can't subpoena witnesses. they can't force people to answer their questions. they are not necessarily going to draw conclusions. with that said, when they hand over these 302s -- and brad knows this very well -- they can certainly still leave open the questions that they haven't been able to answer. they can still give this over and make it clear that there are certain things that they still need to move forward with, that they are not getting enough of, and that's going to be very telling. it's not going to just be, oh, here are the interviews we did,

and here's what they said and they're just going to recite everything that was said to them. that's not the way it works. >> what would you say if the fbi did not interview people like professor ludington saying, wait, that's outside the scope of what we have even though information is being volunteered? >> it's telling me they're going to stick to a script and stop after a week, but george, i'm not convinced that they'll stop after a week. i think they might ask for more time because let's face it, when you open up this can, a lot of other people come out and they may want to talk about it. >> they may ask. i'm not sure they're going to exactly get it. >> and the white house has control over that. >> of course they do. this is a background investigation. this is not, as dan pointed out, this is not a criminal investigation. >> thank you very much. amy? more news out of washington. in fact, breaking news from overnight. u.s., canada and mexico striking a last-minute deal on nafta, coming up with a replacement just before a midnight deadline. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has all the details now in washington. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning, amy.

an 11th hour deal 14 months in the making here. president trump had called nafta the worst deal ever. he's now tweeting, calling this deal wonderful and historic saying, quote, it is a great deal for all three countries. it solves the many deficiencies and mistakes in nafta. it greatly opens markets to our farmers and manufacturers, reduce trade barriers to the u.s. and will bring all three great nations closer together in competition with the rest of the world. the administration also says that this will boost manufacturing in the u.s., lead to higher wages, especially in the auto manufacturing sector, this being a president who we know likes to brand things. the deal also has a new name. it will be called the united state/mexico/canada agreement. it's not a done deal. it needs congress to sign off. >> all right, cecilia vega in washington, thank you. robin? >> all right, amy. now overseas to the race to find survivors of that massive disaster in indonesia. a huge 7.5 earthquake causing a

tsunami that ravaged several major cities friday evening. more than 800 dead, and the toll is expected to rise. abc's james longman is on the ground there and has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, robin. aid is being flown to devastated island from jakarta. this morning, a desperate search under way for survivors after a massive wall of water surging hundreds of miles an hour roared ashore, ripping through a large island in indonesia three days ago, triggered by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. hundreds attending a beach festival when this tsunami crashed into the area, waves reaching as high as 20 feet. in cell phone video, people are scrambling for their lives as the wave moves in. a man yelling and warning people as the tsunami begins to strike.

but many more feared dead after the tsunami hit, dragging people out to sea. from the air, the sheer scale of destruction is clear. home after home, life after life destroyed. officials saying more than 800 killed. many more bodies may be buried in the wreckage. at the earthquake's epicenter, areas still cut off, over a quarter of a million people were living there. bridges, roads, communication towers ripped apart. the death toll expected to rise after many areas have been checked. the streets lined with makeshift morgues. thousands living in the streets after more than 200 aftershocks have shaken the area. indonesia's president touring the island in palu. amid the devastation, heroism. this 15-year-old girl pulled from the rubble, and an air traffic controller staying behind to help the last plane out of palu before the tsunami hit. costing him his life, but likely

this morning, the beach behind me is closed. that teenager is in the hospital. >> we have a shark attack. >> reporter: watch beachgoers race to save a 13-year-old's life. four men desperately drag the teenager ashore inside of a kayak. >> very bad. the kayak was full of blood. >> reporter: the teen had been diving for lobsters when an 11-foot shark attacked. >> he was yelling, i got bit. help. help, help. >> reporter: the shark striking the teen's upper body. >> luckily we got him out of the water because once we threw hip him on the kayak and started heading in, that's when i looked back and the shark was behind the kayak. >> reporter: the teen was air lifted to a nearby hospital with traumatic injuries. >> we imagine it could be a great white shark, but we don't know for sure. there are a lot of shark species out there that could do this, but very few. >> reporter: with that in mind, shark experts want the public to stay alert. >> one of the things that we're seeing, not only in california, but on the east coast, and the sharks are

story, and i quote, fake news. >> cristiano ronaldo. >> reporter: he is one of the most famous soccer players in the world, worth $400 million, for his moves on the field and fronting brands like nike. underwear companies and tech giants. but this morning, cristiano ronaldo is speaking out after being accused of sexual assault. >> no, no, no, no, no. what they said today, fake -- fake news. >> reporter: in a new complaint filed in nevada, 34-year-old kathryn mayorga seen in pictures with the soccer superstar, says ronaldo assaulted her in 2009. she claims that after meeting her in the palms hotel, the megastar invited her and a group of people to his penthouse suite to enjoy the view of the strip. she said he invited her to the hot tub and while she was changing, he pulled her to a bedroom and assaulted her.

she said she screamed no three times and that the alleged encounter left her with severe emotional and bodily injuries. according to the complaint, she said that before she left, ronaldo apologized stating that s he was sorry. he was usually a gentleman. she said she went to the hospital and report thad assault to police, but her lawyer at the time encouraged her to sign a nondisclosure agreement and settle the case for $375,000, telling a german newsmagazine that she signed out, quote, of fear for herself and her family. she now wants that nda thrown out and has filed a civil complaint seeking over $200,000 in compensation. >> this new attorney that she has retained has a totally different take on the nondisclosure agreement and they claim that she has an absolute right now to speak out against the rape. >> reporter: back in 2005, in a different case, ronaldo was arrested and questioned on suspicion of rape. he denied all claims and those

cancer while it is clamped between mammogram plates. this improves on comfort, ladies. because it's so localized, we can remove the cancer with better margins, dropping the incision by 70%, and because it leaves more breast tissue behind, the cosmetic outcome is great. this is what happens. this little reflector is placed into the tumor. even if you do chemotherapy first, it remains inert until you can remove it and also interrogate the specimen to improve on margins. it's great technology. >> it is. that is.
